Album Review: Oteil Burbridge - Lovely View of Heaven
After spending eight years killing Robert Hunter/Jerry Garcia ballads on stage with Dead & Company, bassist Oteil Burbridge took some of those songs into the studio and murdered them.
Lovely View of Heaven finds Burbridge transforming such numbers as “Stella Blue,” “Believe it or Not,” “Mission in the Rain,” “Days Between,” “Stella Blue,” “China Doll” and “Standing on the Moon” - whose lyrics provide the album title - into MOR, adult-contemporary dreck.
How?
First, he slathers them in atmospheric production and strings. Then, he over-dramatizes the vocal delivery and adds cheesy ad-libs to the fades. In doing so, Burbridge robs the songs of the subtle suggestions of woe that made the Grateful Dead - and sometimes Dead & Company - versions so compelling.
The presence of guitarist Steve Kimock, multi-instrumentalist Jason Crosby and Burbridge’s late brother and former Tedeschi Trucks bandmate, Kofi, who plays flute on one of two versions of “High Time,” can’t save these goopy arrangements.

Oteil Burbridge Summons Water in the Desert
With obligations to the Allman Brothers Band and Dead & Company plus reunion dates with Col. Bruce Hampton & the Aquarium Rescue Unit, guest spots on albums, a variety of collaborative performances and a newborn, it’s not surprising that the next solo album by bassist extraordinaire Oteil Burbridge took awhile.
The recently released Water in the Desert began 10 years ago when Oteil started the writing process. Produced by David Ryan Harris (who also sings on the album), Burbridge is joined by his brother Kofi Burbridge on keyboards, Dave Yoke on guitar, Lil’ John Roberts and Sean ORourke on drums, Miguel Atwood Ferguson on strings and Alfreda Gerald and Mark Rivers on vocals.
With the songs incorporating elements of R&B, Jazz, Gospel, Funk, Blues and Rock, the album reflects his listening background and inspirations.
In the press release announcing the album Burbridge said, “They are all songs about love in some way,” he said, “finding out how to love yourself, hoping that another loved one will love you just as you are, believing in someone when they find it hard to believe in themselves, love gone wrong, or finally finding the “perfect fit.” I feel like every problem we have on earth in some way comes back to the lack of love. That’s really what this record is about.”
Burbridge hits the road for a week of dates in support of the “Water in the Desert.” Oteil & Friends includes Melvin Seals, Eric Krasno, John Kadlecik, Jay Lane, Weedie Braimah, and Alfreda Gerald. Seals will not be performing on the Nov. 6 date.
With a barely a moment to catch his breath, he reunites with the members of Dead & Company for that band’s fall tour. [Read More]

RIP Kofi Burbridge

If you dare to leave the house tonight, be it for some country blues jams.
Wynonna & The Big Noise, Rialto Square Theatre
We previewed Wynonna & The Big Noise’s set at City Winery in September:
“Wynonna Judd is still touring strong off of her self-titled debut album with her band The Big Noise, led by her husband/drummer/producer Cactus Moser and featuring Jason Isbell, Susan Tedeschi, and Derek Trucks. Because it’s two years old, expect to hear a few of those songs peppered with Judds classics.”
MØ, Vic Theatre
Danish singer-songwriter and producer MØ finally released her long-awaited second studio album late last year, Forever Neverland. Well, it was anticipated by her fans, but the album failed to assuage the fears of those who heard her vanilla collaborations with Major Lazer and their members. It’s not that EDM rules the album--the Foster The People-addled “Blur” offers more bro tropes than even the Diplo or What So Not features. It’s more that the album’s pop songs are middling, not even salvageable by Charli XCX or Empress Of. Still, she gives a great live show, and she should play plenty of No Mythologies to Follow and, if you’re lucky, a song or two from the early singles that made her catch your attention in the first place.
Atlanta singer-songwriter and producer ABRA opens.
Tedeschi Trucks Band, Chicago Theatre
Tedeschi Trucks Band, who played last Friday and Saturday, return for the next couple nights to complete their annual residency at Chicago Theatre. They’re releasing a new record, Signs, next month. Instrumentally, the record is definitely a band showcase, as on the horn-laden funk of “Walk Through This Life”, blues guitar jam “Still Your Mind”, and uptempo country bop “Hard Case”. But the songwriting and lyricism and soul of the record is really thanks to Susan Tedeschi. She sings about overcoming on “I’m Gonna Be There?” and offers an inspiring ode to life on “Strengthen What Remains”. “Shame” is a gripping, gospel-influenced lament of our current state of political affairs. And “The Ending”, perhaps the record’s best song, was written in tribute to many of the band’s friends who passed away during the recording of Signs, including Butch Trucks, Gregg Allman, Leon Russell, and B.B. King. But it’s Colonel Bruce Hampton to whose final moments Tedeschi pays tribute, all over acoustic blues picking. It’s a moving end to an emotional album, of which the band should play at least a few songs tonight.
Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Thalia Hall
Who would have thought that Black Crowes singer could front a blues rock band that both achieves fame and acclaim and subverts the rock radio cheesiness of his primary outlet? The Chris Robinson Brotherhood, formed 8 years ago when the Crowes were on hiatus, has released six studio albums, most recently 2017′s Barefoot in the Head, and a handful of singles and live albums. Tonight, they begin a new batch of tour dates and should play from all around their discography and some covers. They also play tomorrow night at Thalia Hall.

Song Review(s): Tedeschi Trucks Band - “Soul Sweet Song” and “Playing with My Emotions” (Live, May 31, 2024)
There was a moment during “Playing with My Emotions” when the Tedeschi Trucks Band rhythm section faded, the choir rose and the group locked in to a powerful onstage arrangement disguised as improvisation.
It was testament to the intricate tightness this 12-piece machine had developed over the years and a highlight of an otherwise-mediocre song from TTB’s 2022 series of I am the Moon LPs.
It followed “Soul Sweet Song” in the livestream sampler from Tedeschi Trucks’ May 31 gig in California. This number, a tribute to late TTB keyboardist and co-founder Kofi Burbridge, is among IATM’s highlights, a combination of moving lyrics and serious integration of the full band that captures an array of emotion and wraps it in a warm, musical embrace.
The sound system seemed to still be waking up as the band performed “Soul Sweet Song,” thus muting its impact. It is nevertheless an always-welcome addition to TTB’s setlists.

The answer is yes they do. Each performance, most especially one's like these from a special two-night gig at the Fox Oakland, deserves special attention.
This song is especially excellent for the on-stage subliminal synergy between, Kofi Burbridge & Tim Lefevre! We especially want to feature tracks with UNC alum, Kofi Burbridge, who died too young and as evidenced here in his prime. Let me get by has energy, swagger, and verve. Watch the young T.T.B. spirit, upfront swaying, and singing along with Susan Tedeschi and you have your answer why TTB deserves another weekend Durham Cool music up close article.

Reflecting On The 2019 Deaths In Music
As 2019 heads towards the sunset, I wanted to take a moment to reflect upon the numerous losses that music faced this past year. Though PiercingMetal has long posted extended memorials in our “In Memoriam” Features, it’s almost impossible to speak about them all. Instead, I’m using this comprehensive rundown that was culled from other online research sources so we can say “Hail and Farewell” a…

Tedeschi Trucks Bands Kofi Burbridge Dead at 57 – Ultimate Classic Rock
Kofi Burbridge, a multi-instrumentalist who played keyboards and flute for the Tedeschi Trucks Band, died on Friday. The group confirmed the news via Facebook.
Burbridge, who was 57, underwent emergency heart surgery two years ago. The Tedeschi Trucks Band announced last month that he wouldn’t be joining them on their current tour, after complications arose.
“Today we have lost one of the most beautiful people on the planet: My brother Kofi Burbridge has made his transition. He put up a hard fight,” said percussionist Yonrico Scott, who was a member of the Derek Trucks Band and other projects alongside Burbidge. “My heart goes out to the Burbridge family. Also to the DTB and TTB family. … My love is with you. Brother Kofi has touched so many souls, through his spirit and music.”
Born in New York City, Burbridge and his bassist brother Oteil pursued musical ambitions, learning multiple instruments and genres. They were first bandmates in Knee-Deep then the Aquarium Rescue Unit in 1994, after Oteil credited his younger brother with finding perfect pitch at the age of seven. The younger Burbridge and Scott later shared projects together before all three became founding members of the Tedeschi Trucks Band in 2010; Oteil left two years later.
“Oteil and I actually explored a series of instruments,” Kofi Burbridge said of his early days, in a 2016 talk with NYS Music. “We got lucky because we had a set of parents who saw that we were interested. Like any responsible pair, they made us get our work done first and then we could play. It showed them though that we were really passionate about getting into music, so they invested in lessons and things like that. We had the benefit of my dad’s extensive record collection as well. … We had this treasure waiting for us, not knowing it was treasure waiting for us.”
Kofi appeared on the first four Tedeschi Trucks Band studio albums, and a pair of live projects. “I’ve never had this much creative freedom with any band,” Burbridge added. “It’s the most I’ve been able to open up in any band situation, especially in one like this with so many people.”
Watch Kofi Burbridge Jamming in 2012
Things took a turn more recently, when the group said Burbridge left the road “to undergo a follow-up procedure. The doctors feel good about his recent progress and we’re hoping he’ll be out of the hospital soon, but he’ll need some time for recovery. … We appreciate everyone’s best wishes for Kofi and we’re all looking forward to his healthy recovery and return to the stage where he belongs.”
No cause or location of death was confirmed. The Tedeschi Trucks Band’s new album Signs was released on Friday, as well – and Burbridge played a key role.
“Kofi is full force,” Trucks told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution last April, while Signs was being recorded. “It reminds me of Lord of the Rings when Gandalf goes down and comes back as the white wizard: He’s got a few extra layers of magic! His musicianship has always been amazing, but listening back to the studio [tracks] the last few days, he crossed over there for a minute!”
