Song Review: Trey Anastasio Band feat. Derek Trucks - “Set Your Soul Free” (Live, 2019)

When Derek Trucks plugged in, the Trey Anastasio Band was temporarily - though not officially - transformed into the Anastasio Trucks Band.

This occurred on a collaborative version of “Set Your Soul Free” that took place at the 2019 Lockn’ festival in Virginia and found Trucks seamlessly sliding himself into TAB’s tapestry.

It’s a funky, nothing-matters-but-this-right-here-right-now song, an idea that survives the half-decade delay in its arrival on professional video as Anastasio and his bandmates sing:

Burn it down, burn it down/set your soul free/we’re all here together/in a spirit family/everybody’s dancing/everyone can see/burn it down, burn it down/set your soul free

Stupid though the words may be, the wordless conversion between Trucks and Anastasio’s axes is sublime. And the Band proves that even stupid songs can be presented in ways that sound pretty damn smart.

Song Review: Tedeschi Trucks Band - “Mr. Charlie” (Live, Oct. 8, 2024)

If Pigpen was alive today, it seems likely he’d have sat in with Tedeschi Trucks Band by now.

But the truth is, TTB does Pig’s “Mr. Charlie” tremendous justice on their own, trenching out a bluesy Grateful Dead groove as Susan Tedeschi delivers the vocals with a passion that’d make the one-time Ron McKernan proud.

Performed Oct. 8 in New York state sans horn section with the TTB choir providing emphatic answers to Tedeschi’s chorus, “Mr. Charlie” struts across the stage. Derek Trucks fires of a gnarly, no-slide guitar solo only to have Tedeschi give a grimy response of her own after belting out an intervening verse.

Grateful Dead covers can be a dime a dozen at this stage. But Tedeschi Trucks’ “Mr. Charlie” is more like a dozen silver dollars.

Guitarist Derek Trucks is born in Jacksonville, Florida. After forming The Derek Trucks Band, he serves in The Allman Brothers Band from 1999-2014 alongside his uncle, drummer Butch Trucks.
