Where do the years go? The first is the hobby of a bored teenager replaying childhood games while seeking comfort. The second is spent finding new friends who share the same interests. The third wants to grow, but from a clean slate. The fourth wonders if the risk was worth it. The fifth struggles with life choices, seeking comfort from what is now a long-term project. The sixth is spent mourning the loss of a parent. The seventh begins to pick up the pieces, and the eighth begins to flourish. The ninth marks the beginning of a new stability and the tenth... I realize I'm no longer young enough to pretzel my body in my chair without consequences.

There's not much new to say about what On Borrowed Time means to me that I didn't already say in the 9th anniversary piece, but I continue to be grateful about what this silly little fanfiction has brought to me over the years. To readers old and new, I'm excited to continue this journey with you! Let's just hope it doesn't take another 10 years, haha

relationship... thing. let's get into it.

jack + kodali — starts out contentious but then they become friends and eventually they start dating. listener/yapper dynamic fr. they're cute.

jack + steven — they hit it off immediately, instant friends. jack really wants to make music but he's shit at writing lyrics, he's only good at playing the guitar. steven writes poetry/songs as his main hobby, and is good at a few other instruments. so they had that to bond over. also they're secret siblings lol. via wanky panky. we won't get into it.

kodali + steven — they became friends a couple months prior to the start of the story. textbook best friends. kodali likes to get up to mischief and steven just sort of follows along happily, and thankfully is usually able to get her out of trouble. misfits who only have each other (prior to jack joining the group). kodali is also something of a guard dog, for jack too honestly but mostly for steven.

kodali + katie — twin sisters. used to be besties as kids but their relationship got strained for a multitude of reasons over the years, the primary reason being favoritism. as of the start of the story they are no longer on speaking terms, having recently gotten into a major fight which got physical. they do eventually make amends.

katie + sawyer — dating obviously. have been for about 4 years. no one is happy about it since tom was said to have killed her mother, mari. and also katie is extremely beloved and popular and sawyer is the most hated person in the town. but they have a healthy relationship. ish. sawyer worships the ground she walks on and is very protective, it borders on obsessive. katie is also really reliant on him for security, she has a lot of anxiety/ptsd rooted from the attack she suffered that night as a kid, having him there all the time makes her feel better. it's a liiiittle codependent. after juliet dies things get worse. I won't go into it any more LOL it's a lot.

katie + jade — childhood best friends. he's had a crush on her since forever but that's always been one-sided. he also worships the ground she walks on but he sees himself as her equal so it's not giving the same vibe as sawyer. the power couple who isn't a couple. they're both very popular but neither one of them have many close friends other than each other. very barbie and ken coded LOL.

sawyer + steven — childhood best friends, now estranged. they were neighbors growing up and were close up until they were around 7ish. they had a big falling out after sawyer's little sister was murdered. prior to that, sawyer had a little crush on steven. around the start of the story they have a few run-ins, for a couple different reasons. they inevitably have to speak again, as they both know more than anyone else when it comes to the murders.

sawyer + jade — cousins via tom and wilson. mutually cannot stand each other and never have. as kids they used to beat each other up, although sawyer was always bigger and he always won. jade was lowkey really scared of him. after sawyer's little sister died the tables turned and jade became something of a bully to sawyer. katie has always tried to mediate it and usually she's successful, especially after she and sawyer started dating. except recently, about a month prior to the story. they really got into it. but I won't go into why.
