Why Rei called Shōto the family Hero?
I’ve realized many take Rei’s declaration as a sign that Rei is a bad mother, viewing it as Rei forcing a label on Shōto.
I’ve kind of already discussed it in my Todoroki FAQ, in reply to an ask but since someone else asked about this I thought to make a post about it.
Premise: the Todoroki family plotline is often drenched in ‘traditional Japanese family values and cultural factors’ which might not exist or not make sense in other cultures with different sets of beliefs and values. I’m not Japanese myself so, even though I researched on them, I’m clearly not an expert and not the best person to discuss them, which is why I encourage everyone who feels confuse or wants to know more to research by themselves for more explanations.
So, those are Rei’s words.
Todoroki Rei ‘Watashi-tachi yori yoppodo tsurai hazu no ko ga urande tōzen no watashi o futatabi okāsan to yondekureta. U.A. kōkō de o tomodachi o tsukutte watashi-tachi o tsunagitomete kureta. Shōto ga Todoroki-ke (read: uchi) no HERO ni natte kureta no yo.’ Todoroki Rei “A child who should have suffered much more than us called me ‘mother’ again, even though it was only natural that he would resent me. He made friends at U.A. High School and kept us together/saved us/kept us connected. Shoto became the Hero of the Todoroki family (read: of our family).” [Chap. 302]
To contextualize Rei’s words, they’re in response to Enji’s question if she’s really Rei, after hearing her tell him ‘he’s not the only one who’s responsible but that even if his heart his brother they will help him to stand again because he has no choice but to fight Dabi’.
Todoroki Rei ‘Sekinin wa anata dake no mono janai. Kokoro ga kudakete mo watashitachi ga tata semasu. Anata wa dabi to tatakau shika nai no.’ 轟冷「責任はあなただけのものじゃない。 Todoroki Rei “The responsibility is not yours alone. Even if your heart is broken, we will help you stand. You have no choice but to fight Dabi.” [Chap. 302]
In short, Rei’s words are an explanation on how she could find the strength to stand in front of him, take part of the responsibility for the situation and firmly state what he has to do, how this time he won’t be able to escape facing his son, that they’ll make him stand, when before she used to either agree with him or beg him to change his mind, unable to face him as equal.
Rei is saying it’s thanks to Shōto she could go back to the Todoroki family, face him and tell him all that.
What did Shōto exactly do?
For a little more context, in the past, due to Enji’s abuse Rei’s mental sanity declined and, in a paranoia episode, she mistook Shōto for Enji and threw to him boiling water. She cried, apologized and tried to cool down Shōto’s burn once she realized her mistake, but it was done and couldn’t be undone.
Todoroki Rei ‘Ā Shōto!! Gomen nasai Shōto! Ā nante koto o aā nante koto o!’ Todoroki Rei “Oh Shōto!! I’m so sorry Shōto! Oh, what have I done, oh, what have I done!” [Chap. 249]
Enji had her hospitalized afterward, her conditions worsening even more as she learnt of Tōya’s death while she was hospitalized. Also, from when she was hospitalized, Shōto didn’t visit her, according to Shōto because he felt guilty for what happened (and, likely, didn’t want to make her worse) [Chap. 44],
according to Fuyumi because Rei wasn’t up to see him [Chap. 250],
according to me because Horikoshi retconned the whole story way too often and forgot his own plotline to the point chap. 302 had to be OFFICIALLY re-retconned for the volume version because fans protested for the retcon in the magazine version.
Whatever, let’s put complains aside and let’s focus back on the whole thing.
After U.A. sport festival though, Shōto decided to visit Rei in order to save her because he blamed himself for his mother’s conditions. We don’t know what they said to each other, all we have is a summary given by Shōto.
Todoroki Shōto ‘(Haha wa naite ayamari, odoroku hodo assari to waratte yurushite kureta. Ore ga nani ni mo torawarezu ni tsuki susumu koto ga shiawase deari sukui ni naru to itte kureta.)’ Todoroki Shōto “(My mother cried and apologized, and surprisingly, she laughed and forgave me. She said that it would be her happiness and salvation if I were to continue moving forward without being tied down by anything.)” [Chap. 53]
From Shōto’s words is clear to figure he didn’t expect to be forgiven. From the words Rei says in chap. 302 is clear though, SHE was the one who didn’t expect to be forgiven and didn’t quite understand Shōto never held her accountable for his own scar (Shōto always blamed Enji for it) and never stopped to call her mother.
It would probably be good for the both of them to sit down and talk more about the whole thing, but they’re likely not going to do it as they’re trying to move forward.
Anyway Shōto’s visit and the fact he forgave her are apparently what allows Rei to finally start recovering after 10 YEARS spent in a hospital.
We see it in chap. 187 where, in explanation on why she’s looking good, Rei tells to Natsuo it’s because Shōto is writing her letters.
Yes, she’s completely skipping the fact that Natsuo and Fuyumi had been supporting her as well, but probably the idea is that what kept her in hospital wasn’t just Enji’s abuse but her sense of guilt toward what she did to Shōto and what happened to Tōya.
In this sense, all she truly needed to heal (since Tōya was believed to be dead) was for Shōto to forgive her, hence all the support Fuyumi and Natsuo gave her just couldn’t psychologically compare to Shōto forgiving her (I would say Tōya turning out to be alive also helped get her out of the hospital).
Still, yes, it’s not really fair toward her other two kids who also supported her the best they could, but it psychologically fits and it’s likely the truth for Rei. Without Shōto forgiving her she probably thinks she likely would still be hospitalized as Fuyumi and Natsuo’s support wouldn’t have been enough (and her doctors failed big time as they should have helped Rei to overcome this even without Shōto forgiving her).
So okay, Rei is very, very grateful to Shōto and her words are meant to explain how grateful she is, but why to use such words? Why to call him a Hero, the Todoroki family Hero?
As the answer is, for me, more Doylistic in nature than Watsonian, I’ll tackle it as such.
Horikoshi just had Dabi reveals he’s Todoroki Tōya.
Tōya’s plan to damage Enji is, considering the country he lives in, beautiful.
This is because revealing Enji’s FIRSTBORN is a criminal has socially big implications for Enji and, by default, for the Todoroki family.
To have a criminal in the family is a BIG DEAL in Japan, it’s something I’ve discussed more than once but it can destroy the family, who usually tends to reject and try to disconnect as much as they can from the criminal member, often going as far as far as changing name, being forced to leave work and residence to avoid the social stigma that will basically allow everyone who knows the truth to ostracize at best, abuse at worst them. Their blood is tainted, impure, because they share it with a Villain. This doesn’t regard just the parents who raised Tōya in the wrong way but all his siblings, even Shōto who had no hand in his upbringing. Tōya, or better Dabi as they insist on calling him as such, is the Todoroki family’s villain.
They don’t exactly voice it, but the message is the same and it’s something that doesn’t even need to be voiced because Japanese readers would just know it.
This is the hell Natsuo talks about...

...the hell Tōya dragged his family in.
Horikoshi didn’t want to show it, he only vaguely hinted at it, and wanted the story to end up in a hopeful, positive setting, but things wouldn’t be normally so pretty.
Shōto would be kicked out of school and forbidden from becoming a Hero, Natsuo’s girlfriend would dump him, Fuyumi not only would lose her job but wouldn’t find another and everyone would turn their backs to them. Their house would be vandalized and they would be ostracized at best. Also, forget, the nice and supportive doctor who encourages Enji, he would have nothing of the sort, not because he abused his family, but because one of his family members became a Villain, and this is assumed to taint their whole blood.
To counter this, Horikoshi presents Shōto as sitting on the other side of the spectrum.
If Tōya is the Todoroki family’s Villain, Shōto has to be the Todoroki family’s Hero.
We see it also in how Horikoshi changes things in the presentation of Todorokis’ past.
Chap. 39 showed Shōto watching as his mother got hit, Chap. 302 shows him trying to defend her (in a scene that’s sadly not particularly good to the point the anime didn’t know how to animate it well) while Fuyumi and Natsuo instead curl on the ground, scared and Tōya is nowhere to be seen (possibly because in the magazine version Horikoshi planned for him to go on Sekoto Peak while Enji was beating Rei, and burn himself on the mountain, which would explain why, during Dabi’s dance, Tōya didn’t out his father as a wife beater as he never managed to witness such thing, and then Horikoshi had to retcon such plan when it turned out he had already stated in his story that Rei was hospitalized when Tōya burned and so Tōya’s whereabouts became simply unknown).
Why now Horikoshi decided to show Shōto stand up for his mother when he didn’t do it first?
Remember the whole instinct that marks Heroes because it pushes their body to act without them realizing? Here Horikoshi revealed Shōto had it too, that his body moved to protect his mother when he was a child (and, by the way, in chap. 301 he had Tōya snap and attack Shōto because Tōya has to be opposite to Shōto). This is Shōto’s heroic childhood story that shows he had Hero spirit from the start.
Having Rei verbally saying that Shōto is the family’s Hero is Horikoshi’s way to remember to his readers how much of a Hero Shōto is, especially after Shōto was basically defeated as Tōya had proved himself to be stronger in their previous match.
Horikoshi’s need to put Shōto on the spotlight as Hero is also why he doesn’t think Rei should acknowledge also Fuyumi and Natsuo’s efforts to help her.
Shōto is the one Todoroki who truly matter, Fuyumi and Natsuo are characters created to facilitate Enji’s atonement arc (yeah, Natsuo too, long story that has no place here), where Rei was created to give Shōto a sad backstory. That’s why we’ve Rei being used to carry on further Shōto’s endgame as a Hero without worrying about her other kids.
It’s a ‘flaw’ in Horikoshi’s writing which we’ll also see later on, when Enji thinks he has to worry about the future of the kids and the images Horikoshi shows us are of the future of… Shōto and class A. Because they’re the characters that matter.
Fuyumi and Natsuo?
We won’t even get to know what will be of them in chap 430 (which however feels compelled to show us Enji is still getting support from Hawks and his sidekicks) or 431, they got a rushed ending in chap. 426 and that’s it.
To conclude, there’s also another important thing about why Horikoshi had Rei define Shōto in such a specific way.
In Japan enduring in silence is a form of heroism.
‘Gaman’ (我慢) is a Japanese term of Zen Buddhist origin which means “enduring the seemingly unbearable with patience and dignity”. The term is generally translated as “perseverance”, “patience”, or “tolerance”. A related term, ‘gaman-tsuyoi’ (我慢強い), a compound with ‘tsuyoi’ (強い “strong”), means “suffering the unbearable” or having a high capacity for a kind of stoic endurance.
Gaman is variously described as a “virtue”, an “ethos”, a “trait”, etc. It means to do one’s best in distressed times and to maintain self-control and discipline.
Gaman tends to be misperceived by the non-Japanese as introverted behavior or as a lack of assertiveness or initiative, but for Japanese people is a demonstration of strength in the face of difficulty or suffering. Gaman is, in Japanese society, closely related to complying with conformity and silent heroism, which seems to be hidden pride for compensation for sacrifice and being satisfied to pay reciprocal service in advance or to being seen themselves as victims by folks. Showing ‘gaman’ is seen as a sign of maturity and strength. Keeping private affairs, problems and complaints silent demonstrates strength and politeness as others have seemingly larger problems as well. If a person with ‘gaman’ received help from someone else, they would be compliant, not ask for any additional help, and voice no concerns.
If a person fails to have/show ‘gaman’, the result could be a sudden manifestation of aggression.
This form of heroism is a form of heroism that Horikoshi was trying to propose RATHER HARD in his last 10 volumes of the story (it’s visible prior to them too but not so much as it is in those last volumes).
Gone is the ‘a true hero saves not only their lives, but also their hearts...’ [Chap. 92] or ‘ultimates heroes, ones who save by winning and win by saving.’ [Chap 120].
Now we have ‘if you define “Hero” as someone the people look up and count on then the Heroes really did vanish that day even if some where still prepared to stand up and fight. But if you define a “Hero” as someone willing to suffer in silence then… who’s there for them when they’re in pain?’
A Hero is someone who suffers in silence (and if what @codenamesazanka suggested is meant to be true, ‘a villain is someone who doesn’t suffer in silence’).
We’ll see this idea of ‘suffering in silence=hero’ in many scenes but, especially in the hospital arc in which Shōji, who covers his scarred face with a mask so no one will feel uneasy around him, insists the discriminated Heteromorph just shouldn’t rage against society. Rage is only okay if you rage on the behalf of someone else, not yourself.
Back to Shōto, he fits with the image of the Hero who suffered in silence as presented in chap. 302 because, according to it, he suffered more than anyone else yet harbored no negative feelings, forgave Rei and helped her… and, in that same chapter, he also offered his hand to Enji, whose heart is broken or so he said.
The story placed big emphasis on how holding someone’s hand would mean offering support and salvation so basically this is a nod on how Shōto is also saving his father after he saved Rei.
So yes, Horikoshi basically used Chap 300/301/302 to establish how, in answer to Tōya being the Todoroki family’s Villain, Shōto is the Todoroki family’s Hero. It’s preparation for the fight between the two as well as Horikoshi’s way to carry on his messages.
As Rei is a vessel, a mean for Horikoshi to pass on his ideas, we can speculate that, on the Watsonian side, Rei is labeling Shōto as the family Hero, in part for the same reasons as Horikoshi, because, as she herself said, Shōto suffered and yet forgave and helped the family to come back together.
Where many western fans just believe Rei should divorce from Enji, it’s worth to remember in Japan there’s a strong stigma against divorce, which is not easy to obtain, and the tendency to blame women for it even if the fault is of the man, the repercussions falling on the whole family kids included (women in Japan are currently fighting against this and things are slowly improving).
As said before the Todorokis represent a traditional Japanese family, hence Shōto also saves the family by allowing Rei to be capable to stand with Enji again. By recomposing the family.
In the end Rei is not trying to put a label on Shōto, to force a role on him, she’s just calling things as she sees them, Shōto did something heroic that saved the Todoroki family and, in the story, he will continue to do heroic things and save the family as it will befall on him to deal with Dabi, “the Todoroki family’s sin” and he’ll be the one who’ll save the day at the end.
She also can’t think she’s doing something wrong because SHŌTO ALWAYS WANTED TO BE A HERO, so acknowledging him as such can be also viewed as her acknowledging his efforts and how they work, how they’re fit of a Hero.
There’s more I could say, part of it is cultural, part of it is tied to the Shōnen manga tendency to push adult roles on teens without really questioning it too much, actually often using it to underline how great those teens actually are, but I think this alone can give you an idea of how Horikoshi didn’t mean at all for Rei to look a bad mother when he had her say so, he just aimed at raising Shōto up.
At least, this is my opinion on the whole topic. As usual people can think differently from me as I’m not Horikoshi and I don’t own the truth.

New Year’s Special Video /
Please note that English lines are just my translation.
Maomao “Jinshi-sama, Happī nyū iyā. Kotoshimo yoroshiku onegai-shimasu.”
Maomao “Master Jinshi, Happy New Year. I look forward to working with you again this year.”
(Yoroshiku): well, in good way + お願いします(おねがいします/Onegai-shimasu): I would like to ask you for…
This is a typical Japanese phrase used in addition to New Year’s greetings.
“Happy New Year” is 「あけましておめでとう(ございます)/Ake-mashite omedeto(gozai-masu)」 in Japanese, just for your information.
Jinshi “O, Ou… Kusuriya, Happī nyū iyā. …Omae-kara hanashi-kakete-kuru-nante, warui mono-demo kutta-noka!? Nomi-sugite-naika?”
Jinshi “Oh, yeah… Happy New Year, Apothecary… I can’t believe it’s you who’s talking to me… Did you eat something bad? Or are you drinking too much?”
Maomao (Koitsuwa shin-nen-soso shitsureina…) “Shin-nen-no aisatsuwa kichinto shita-hoga iito, Suiren-sama-karamo iware-mashita-node. Soreni-shitemo, kono-yona kimononi, osechi-to-iu tokubetsuna tabemono… Oshogatsuno mukae-katawa, chiikini-yotte kotonaruno-desune.”
Maomao (How rude of him so early in the New Year…) “Lady Suiren told me that I should give a proper New Year’s greeting. But still, wearing a kimono like this, and eating special foods called “Osechi”… The way we celebrate the New Year differs from region to region.”
Osechi-ryori): Special dishes eaten during New Year’s in Japan
Oshogatsu): New Year’s days (In Japan, it depends but Jan.1 – 3 are called Oshogatsu and almost all companies and schools are on New Year holidays.)
Jinshi “Aa. Kokyuno mina-nimo, ironna mononi furete-hoshikute-na. Soda, mo-hitotsu, shogatsu-rashii koto’o yara-naika? Kono itade hane’o uchi-au, hagoita-to-iu asobi rashii.”
Jinshi “Yeah. I want everyone in the rear palace to have the opportunity to touch and interact with all kinds of things. Oh, how about we do one more thing that’s fitting for the New Year? It’s a game called “Hagoita,” where we hit shuttlecocks with this board.”
Hagoita): One of the old girls’ games. The winner writes something on the cheek of the loser.
Maomao (Ge. Ko-iu asobiwa tokui-dewa nain-dayonaa. Tekitoni riyu’o tsukete kotowaruka.)
Maomao (Ugh. I’m not good at this kind of play. I’ll just make up an excuse and decline.)
Maomao “Watashi-nanka-dewa aiteni naranai-kato. Basen-samato yararetewa ikaga desuka?”
Maomao “I don’t think I’m a match for you. How about you take on Master Basen?”
Jinshi “Ii-noka? Moshi omaega kattara, hobini… Hore, kono sake’o yaro.”
Jinshi “Are you sure? If you win, as a reward… here, I’ll give you this drink.”
Maomao “Fu, fufufufu, hahahahaha! Jinshi-sama, donna kekkani nattemo uramikko-nashi desu-karane! Iza jinjoni! Shobu desu!”
Maomao “…Huff, heh heh heh, hahahahahaha! Master Jinshi, no matter what the outcome, no hard feelings, right? Now, let’s have a fair fight!”
Iza jinjoni shobu): stock phrase when starting a serious match in old samurai battles
Maomao “Guuu……Maketa……Watashino sakeeee…”
Maomao “Grrr… I lost… My booze…”
Jinshi “Fuffuffu……Aaa…Ugoite sukoshi tsukareta-naaa, …Saa, kyukei-demo toruto suruka… Kusuriya, omaemo tsukiauka? Hore.”
Jinshi “Hehehe, ah, I’m a bit tired from all the moving around. I think I’ll take a break. Apothecary, do you want to join me? Come on.”
Maomao “Haaa…! Sasuga Jinshi-sama! Itsumo hontoni suteki-desu! Risono joshi!”
Maomao “Ahh…! As expected of Master Jinshi! You’re always so wonderful! You’re the ideal boss!”
Riso): ideal
Joshi): boss
Jinshi “Haa, …Genkinna yatsume.”
Jinshi “Hmmm… what a calculating person.”
現金な(げんきんな/Genkinna): calculating, mercenary, self-serving (It’s not a compliment, but not such a bad word. It’s a word used lightly to describe someone who suddenly becomes motivated as soon as they learn of the reward.)
Following picture shows a typical Japanese New Year's day. We eat special foods like Osechi and Ozoni. Ozoni is a soup with "mochi"(rice cake), and what goes into soup varies considerably depending on the region and each family.

Happy New Year, everyone! Season 2 finally starts on 10 Jan., so let's have fun together!

Oh, what kind of vibes does using uchi give, then? Also, isn’t it typically used as like… Our household, or something silimar? Is there a you pronoun specific to hiroshima-ben?
uchi is used to mean household/family/in-group in standard japanese, yes! it literally means 'inside', but in that use typically its used in combination with no (possessive) and can be translated best as 'our.' for example, uchi no ko is 'our/my household's child.' in one piece it's also frequently used to refer to crewmates- uchi no senchou for 'our captain', uchi no sogeki for 'our sniper,' etc. i misread hibari's first lines of dialogue at first because i wasn't expecting the dialect and initially assumed she was using uchi to refer to herself and helmeppo collectively, to give you an example.
i'm pretty sure in dialectal use as a first-person pronoun it is still mostly used by women, so it does feel feminine, and maybe a little slangy or provincial (since that's the vibe often assigned to the western dialects generally)? because i haven't seen it used this way often it's kind of difficult for me to say.

The Chanoyu Hyaku-shu [茶湯百首], Part IV: Poem 79.

“Dawn [is the time] when, within the sukiya, the andon [should be used]; but at night-gatherings and the like, the tankei is placed out.”

Once again, referring to ideas that have already been touched on in the previous posts, Jōō is reinforcing the tradition that a tomoshibi sequestered within a zashiki-andon should be used as the principal source of artificial illumination in the sukiya [數奇屋]¹ at chakai held early in the morning².

But at night, the tomoshibi should be placed on a tankei, so that its unobstructed light will be able to flood the whole room with its warming glow.

Aside from the fact that Jōō uses the word asa [朝] (morning), rather than akatsuki [曉] (dawn), in his (original) version of this poem³, there are no other differences between what is found in any of the collections, reflecting the uniformity of the understanding of this teaching -- that the zaseki-andon should be used at dawn, and the tankei at night.
_________________________
¹While the Kyūshū manuscript spells sukiya phonetically (as sukiya [すきや]*), the other versions (except for Katagiri Sadamasa’s) use the Korean kanji-form sukiya [數奇屋].
Sekishū’s version has sukiya [數寄屋], using the “Japanese” form of the word† that began to appear after the middle of the seventeenth century (at the time when the Japanese, under the influence of Kanamori Sōwa’s [金森宗和; 1584 ~ 1657] highly speculative histories‡ of chanoyu in Japan, were actively trying to distance chanoyu from its Korean roots). ___________ *Possibly implying a certain ambiguity over the proper kanji to use -- Sansai’s version of this poem was committed to paper a decade or two before Sekishū’s version, which suggests that Kanamori Sōwa’s writings were already beginning to have their desired effect.
†Unlike suki [數奇, 수기], the Korean word (which, in this kind of context, means something like “rely on the odd [numbers]”), suki [數寄] has no meaning apart from this use as the name of a kind of tea room.
With respect to the original (i.e., Korean) meaning, it is noteworthy that Rikyū explained the word suki in this way:
suki ⋅ ni jikun [數奇 ⋅ 二字訓]
‘su’ no ji kazu atsumuru naran mada sadashi sekiji ha shibashi to tsuzuku nari
‘ki’ no ji sugururui tori katakata ayashimu
“An explanation of the two characters su [数] and ki [奇]: “The character su [数] means not just to gather together a number of things, but that this should be done in accordance with the classical teachings; in ancient times, things were always done like this.
“And with respect to the character ki [奇], it means that each person should directly investigate these matters in minute detail for himself.”
Rikyū then continues:
hi-mi-i-na-ko kore wo go-ki to iu
fu-yo-mu-ya-to kore wo sen-fu to iu
nakaba wo chōzuru yotte suki to iu
“1, 3, 5, 7, 9, are the later (“derived”) odd numbers, while 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 are the earlier (“original”) even numbers, so to speak.
“Carefully paying attention to both of these is what is meant by suki, so it is said.”
His words have been interpreted (by the daimyō Uesugi Kenshin [上杉謙信; 1530 ~ 1578], in his commentary on the Chanoyu san-byak’ka jō [茶湯三百箇條] -- where Rikyū’s kaki-ire [書入] is found at the beginning of the second scroll of Jōō’s teachings) in this way:
chanoyu tsukamatsuru-toki, sho-dōgu no oki-awase tori-awase naraí no gotoku nose-ai mōsu- beku sōrō-koto dai ichi nari, sari-nagara sono hito-bito no kiryō ni yotte oki-awase tori-awase tsukamatsuru-beku sōrō, kono ki-no-ji no kokoro wo motte kufū no ue ni te toku to gatten itashi, sūki tsukamatsuru koto kan-yō nari , u-kaku tsukamatsuru koto ta-ryū tsutae naki no chanoyu naru-beku nao mata hon-i ni somuki omoshirokarazu sōrō nari
“When doing chanoyu the most important thing with regard to the way in which the utensils are arranged, and combined [with the others], is that this should be done in accordance with the way you were taught. Nevertheless, each person, in accordance with his own abilities, should endeavor to select and place the utensils in the way that seems best [to him]. The true meaning of this ki [奇] must be incorporated into everything one does: this is of the utmost importance when practicing suki. The things that the people who follow other paths [that is, other schools or traditions] teach represent a deviant form of chanoyu which, when compared with the original conception [the way advocated by Jōō and Rikyū], is wholly lacking in interest.”
‡Kanamori Sōwa’s “histories” of chanoyu were nothing more than government propaganda, produced by deliberately conflating the yotsu-gashira-shiki [四つ頭式], and the tō-cha shiki [鬪茶式], together with the ordinary drinking of tea (that was prepared at the o-chanoyu-dana [御茶湯棚] by a servant dressed as a monk, and then conveyed to the residential apartments by a second servant dressed in the house’s livery) -- all of which were historically earlier uses of matcha in Japan (in every case of which the tea was served as usucha) -- with chanoyu (which practice ultimately supplanted the first two -- though matcha, as usucha, remained the principal drinking tea for ordinary occasions among the upper classes until the use of steeped tea was introduced, from Korea, around the middle of the seventeenth century).

Sōwa was charged with “Japanizing” chanoyu, as the first step in the bakufu’s process of declaring that chanoyu (as a now-established purely, and authentically, Japanese traditional practice of great antiquity), of an appropriate level of formality appropriate to the rank of the government envoy they were entertaining (this is where the modern school’s ranked system of temae originated), must be included in the formal reception of every such official received (at least in an official capacity) by the daimyō and wealthy merchants.
The purpose of this rule was not only to effect the bakufu’s control, but also to force the daimyō and merchants to spend money on tea utensils (those that were to be used for the most formal services being ruinously expensive) -- money that would then no longer be available to those aspiring to rebellion against the Tokugawa government.
Nevertheless, it is important for the modern reader to understand, however, that only chanoyu included the service of koicha, and the dichotomy of koicha and usucha; and that is what identifies it as unique, and what contrasts chanoyu with all of the other uses of matcha that were practiced in Japan from the late Heian period until the fifteenth century.
²As has been mentioned before, because sunrise would be expected to occur during the naka-dachi, the artificial light will only be used during the shoza. And even then, since (in Jōō’s day) this kind of gathering would not begin until after dawn had broken*, the natural light coming in through the windows will be increasing, moment by moment, over the course of the shoza, so that the artificial illumination should be kept to the minimum, and focused near to the floor. ___________ *Again, this is a little different from the way things are usually done today. But since the time when the sei-ka-sui [井華水] (“the water that is the ‘flower of the well’”) could be drawn was limited to the 15 or 20 minutes when the dawn was actually breaking, the guests would have to be careful to time their arrival so that they would not interfere with this very important task. The idea was that the water had to be drawn and carried to the mizuya before any activity that might stir up dust could occur.
Since the intracity plots in places like Sakai and Kyōto were exceptionally small (and largely occupied by the residential building, business offices, and storehouse, with the roji being little more than a path that lead around to the back of the property where the chashitsu was erected between the well and the toilet facilities), the koshi-kake was always in close proximity to the well -- hence the desire, on the part of the guests, to postpone their arrival until after the host had drawn the water and carried it back to the preparation area. (And again, we must be careful not to impose our contemporary idea of roji design -- which originated in the Edo period -- on the facilities available to the chajin of Jōō’s and Rikyū’s time.)
³This change in wording was discussed at some length in the previous post. Akatsuki [曉] seems to have been substituted for asa [朝] by Hosokawa Sansai, since this is the kanji that is found in all of the versions that can ultimately trace their source back to his collection (which, along with his other treatises on chanoyu, was written down during the last decade of his life -- Sansai died during the winter of 1645-1646).
The specificity of this word reflects the way that the early-morning chakai had come to be staged during the first half-century of the Edo period, the period to which the modern interpretation of the dawn gathering -- the akatsuki-no-chaji [曉の茶事] -- traces its root.

[Hebiichigo] Potentilla hebiichigo
蛇[Hebi] : Snake
苺[Ichigo] : Strawberry
It produces red berries in the summer. They are not poisonous, but have no taste and not much texture.
The following is one of the well-known folktales about snakes.

Snake wife (Although it is called Snake, it is mostly a spirit of water, in other words, more like Dragon woman than Serpent.) When a man was grieving over the loss of his wife, a beautiful woman came from somewhere, they became spouses, and eventually she became pregnant. When it came time to give birth, his wife made sure, "Never look inside" and entered the delivery room. Her husband was so worried that he sneaked a peek inside and found a terrifying serpent coiled itself around a baby. The man was too surprised, but secretly went back and kept quiet. Seven days later, the woman came out with an adorable baby boy in her arms, and after wailing, "Now that my true form is known, I can't live here anymore" she put the child down and said, "Let him lick this when he cries" and hollowed out her left eyeball and left. The child licked the ball and grew up, but as the days went by, the eyeball gradually became smaller and smaller, and finally disappeared. The father carried the child on his back and went to visit her in a swamp deep in the mountains. Then the serpent appeared, this time hollowing out her right eyeball and handing it to him, requesting him "Hang a bell by the swamp to announce 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.," and disappeared into the swamp. After that, the father dedicated a bell to a temple near the swamp and asked that it be rung at those times. When the child grew up, knew his early life and went to pick up his mother to the swamp, this time she appeared in the form of a blind human. He carried her back home on his back and took his filial duty. [Nippon mukashi-banashi meii](Glossary of folktales of Japan) edited by NHK and supervised by 柳田 国男[Yanagita Kunio]. This is the version of Iwate Prefecture, and many other versions do not have the last paragraph. There are also cruel versions. And, there is a word in this text that is changed to read differently than it did when this was written.
