.havign lots of thoughts about how npcs are portrayed learning about the nature of their universe in works
#.most of the feelings were thrown onto evan since like. i dunno feels like a lot of the works like that write the npcs as fi the npcs-#.are actually people from outside the game transported into the game and have points of refrence about this whole thing and react how ''rea#.people'' would react to learning that they were inside a video game#.when really the npcs would prolly react closer to just going yea okay. since that's their world. they have no other world. that's their#.universe. and now they ave a little bit more info about their own universe#.yea they could have an existencial crisis if they knew what it means but also like#.''ooooh that means that i'm not real'' uhm. yea they are. they still are. that world is real from their perspective and continues to be#.real even after the learn about this#.from OUR perspective they aren't! but from theirs? yea! they are!#.also it9 s not like they would instantly know everything about how video games work even if they had no prior knwledge of that#.why would they try to change the fact that they're made out of lines of code#.that's like being mad and wanting to change the fact that they're made out of atoms#.except in their case it's ones and zeros in a computer#.PLUS!!!!!!!!! IN SOME CASES!!!!!!!!!! MAYBE THEY DONT EVEN KNOW WHAT VIDEO GAMES OR COMPUTERS ARE!!!!!!!!!!#.IT ALL DEPENDS ON WHAT SORT OF WORLD THE VIDEO GAME PORTRAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!#.IF THE WORLD HAS COMPUTERS IN THERE THEN THEY KNOW A LITTLE BIT MORE!#.IF THE WORLD IS MEDIVAL THEY WOULDN'T FUCKING KNOW SHIT!#.once again pointing at evan and how we threw bunch of our feelings about this onto her#.since like he grew up in a world post combine invasion and like. technoglogy isn't really the best#.like barely anyone has any access to it other than the combine and all that jazz#.so she doesn't know what video games are. maybe has heard of what computers are#.she learned about being in a video game but to him that's the same as learning how our solar system travels through the galaxy and physics#.it's just another little detail about the world thta may explain some things. or maybe it doesn't#.when facing with her code she sees it as her dna. yea she's reading it but she deson't understand a thing in it#.maybe some fragments maybe not#.just like how everyday people wouldn't know how to interpert dna if they already haven't studied about that subject#.and when him getting corrupted. she doesn't know what happened. he just knows that something did. but she can't do anything about it#.and instead just learn how to navigate the world with more difficulties#.like how one would with a pernament injury

oughh your screenshots make me want to play star citizen so bad
star citizen is a lot of fun and it's an actual game now and not just a tech demo and theyre ramping up to release 4.0 with the new pyro system. but it is still very much a buggy mess at times, but not as much as your average AAA game. there is currently a sale going on for the cutter starter pack, which isnt less than the usual price of 50$ but its maybe the best starter ship of them all at the price of the cheap starters. dont ever buy anything else besides your starter with real money you can get all ships pretty fast in-game
also be adviced that the game needs a good pc to run comfortably. not an insane pc, just a good one

I have a question related to the cider verse. There was only something about why Alec never told his siblings that he was dating Magnus. Does Magnus tell someone? Ragnor, Raphael, or Catarina. Also, when they were getting married, they were only discussing whether Alec wanted to invite his siblings. There is nothing about Magnus wanting to have anyone close to him during his wedding.
so Jem is going to be able to share his memories of the ceremony eventually when they all meet up and this is a nephilim ceremony. like they're married, they are bound, they are eternally tied together but they haven't completed the ritual/warlock/consort aspect of their marriage and relationship yet
most rituals like that require time to nurture magic inside your consort or the ritual you're using and this was a quick problem solve.
this was an elopement and magnus offered for alecs siblings to be there because they aren't going be allowed to be at the warlock ceremony and magnus knows that alec's not going to want to deal with another nephilim ceremony just to include his siblings
they're in the middle of a budding war, they don't have time for a beautiful ceremony with downworlders and shadowhunters alike. alecs siblings would never have been invited if cat and ragnor were attending because magnus wouldn't have trusted them with the knwledge that ragnor is so close to him.
and cat and ragnor dn't care about this ceremony. they care about the ceremony that they'll be actively involved in and can share the joy and magic of it with magnus and thats mre important to him too
like if alec can't trust them to tell them he's in a relationship, magnus isn't going to risk sharing his closest friends and the ties he shares with them that could be used against him and them
magnus never intended to invite them. he doesn't care because they'll be at the most important ceremony possible for warlocks when he has time to do that with alec and also their safety is paramount.
raphael imo is not nearly as important a witness as cat and ragnor to magnus and no way is magnus having either of those come near a silent brther (even if it is jem) when the tensions are this high. there is a risk other silent brthers could track jem (as slim as it is) and jem knws better too.
what they're doing isn't illegal, but magus isn't about to implicate anyone important to him and the clave would target warlock witnesses over nephilim
i hpe that makes sense?
and sorry my 'o' key is iffy and i tend to save my editing spons for writing

Okay so there's obviously more to this than "just capitalism" but, I think that the impact on the arts of the popular descent from capitalism to fascism is being overlooked in this discussion.
See, we're not yet to the point of literally burning books in piles in the streets so as to eradicate any trace of the knwledge within from the historical record.
But,in the US especially, we ARE already in the "banning and destruction of art and knowledge" phase.
This cooling effect where popular art becomes more conservative is the civilian response to the state's violence WRT book banning etc over the last decade. Just look at the armed state enforcers claring the shelves off school libraries in Florida for an example.
Thus it becomes imperative to publication houses to only publish propagandistically pure art. Things that won't get banned by the fash.
So that they can continue profiting in spite of said fash.
And where publishers go authors are forced to follow unless they want to starve. And so, here we are.
This is noticeable not just in the realm of Strong Female Characters, but in many genres and archetypes. Where for example have all the elderly mentors gone?
There used to be story roles for people in their 80s and up, as advisors and carers and bastions of old knowledge. But Gandalf and Obi-Wan are younger every year. When was the last time you saw a crone, whether evil or good, played by a woman over 60? When was the last time you saw a crone period? Aunt May is in her 40s now.
But an elderly person espousing perfectly normal opinions from 15 years ago is a political threat. Not only for their opinions, but for validating the older people IRL as potential sources of knowledge too. And thus publishers, studios, etc have a financial interest in not allowing those characters.
This is a constant refrain in effectively all popular art. Books, TV, film, music. And in all genres thereof. Horror movies have become sterilized and staid in lockstep with YA novels and top 40 music.
Captialism and fascism destroy all art at every level, including the earliest stages of production and distribution.
The Epic of Gilgamesh has sparked me into thinking about women in literature and storytelling, and how in some ways we are unusually misogynistic in the way we tell stories compared to...most of history
I've been reading the Foster translation of the epic, and it's striking how...not-antagonistic the text is toward women.
For one thing, a significant portion of the characters with important roles are female. Gilgamesh and Enkidu are obviously the important ones, and Utnapishtim to a degree, but we also have Inanna, Ninsun, Shamhat, Siduri, Utnapishtim's wife, and even Aruru, who gets credit here for being the supreme creator being.
I was surprised as well by how neutral the text is in portraying them. Shamhat, the 'harlot' ("sex worker" doesn't work here, because there are some spiritual/religious connotations here as well i think?), is...just a character. She isn't demonized, we aren't supposed to despise her. Siduri is just a weird lady running a tavern at the end of the world all alone. Ninsun, Gilgamesh's mother, is a source of wisdom and authority.
There are repeated occasions throughout the story where other characters seek out female characters because of their power and/or wisdom (e.g. Gilgamesh going to Ninsun for help interpreting his dreams, the gods summoning Aruru to create someone to oppose Gilgamesh). They're also actually allowed to speak in the story.
I remember being surprised by it when I read the Iliad that we actually got to hear Briseis speak, just as I was by how much talking women do in Shakespeare.
I think I expected less because the storytelling produced by the present day world around me set the bar so low.
In the Original and Prequel trilogies of Star Wars, there are, like, at most six female characters with speaking roles that I can remember (Leia, Padme, Mon Mothma, Zam Wessell, Beru Lars, and the decoy queen in The Phantom Menace whose name I can't remember). You probably don't even remember some of these, because they were not important at all. It's like if Dexter Jettster happened to be female.
That's just the thing, though, isn't it? Dexter Jettster is male. Chewbacca is male. Obi-Wan Kenobi, Mace Windu, Yoda and Qui-Gon Jinn are male. Sebulba, the pod-racer that explodes in Episode 1, is male, Jen Porkins is male, Greedo is male, Poggle the Lesser is male, Boss Nass is male, Salacious Crumb is male, Captain Panaka is male, even the droids are at least coded as male. There is no reason for it.
I don't know quite enough about Marvel to compare, and honestly haven't bothered with Marvel in a few years, but only one of the original Avengers is female, as well as only one of the original Guardians of the Galaxy, both were defined by their relationships to major male characters, and both died. The focus on the male characters is overwhelming.
We're used to stories that barely have any female characters in them. The Lord of the Rings has what, three? four? women? Stories that actually have similar proportions of men and women receive backlash, as Scott Lynch did when Red Seas under Red Skies had "too many" women (it was still predominantly male!) Even books that are praised as "feminist" or appear to be focused on women neglect the actual presence of women. I only read the first two Throne of Glass novels, but I can only remember two female characters in it apart from the main character, and iirc both of them die. (It's not a 'feminist' series at all, but I digress.)
We're actually backsliding in some respects, if you ask me—in visual media, traditionally "unattractive" women are disappearing. Weird women are disappearing. "Strong Female Character" has become just another trope as restrictive as any of the other roles "allowed" for women. We see people looking backward at characters like Edna Mode as unusually human and well-represented when I'm not convinced that they were at the time.
And now the Epic of Gilgamesh seems unusually woman-focused and not-misogynistic. I wonder how we got here...
