all I’m saying is if you knock on the door of your rich, well-dressed male neighbours in their mid-late fifties and hear one shout to the other “are you in the bath again?” and you think they’re just friends
that’s a you problem

Obsessed with the scene in glass onion where blanc says "There is nothing I can do except, maybe offer you some courage and a remainder of why your sister walked away in the first place" AND THATS WHAT HE LITERALLY DOES. COURAGE AND A REMAINDER OF WHY.

I feel like Glass Onion is also a commentary on how ridiculous some “mysteries” are, especially in spaces in like true crime. In real life, most “mysteries” usually have pretty simple answers. It’s the cheating spouse. It’s a jealous business partner. It’s the person who owes the victim a lot of money. Most people aren’t Machiavellian masterminds. We’ve all gotten used to the Agatha Christie-style of mysteries: it’s all intricate plots and the least expected answer. In reality, it’s hard to set up all those pieces. I was somewhat expecting the murderer in Glass Onion to be the murderer but I fell into the trap that Blanc and others do: I expected the answer to be more complicated than what it was. And that’s the genius of the film.

I’ve been thinking about the Brand sister’s names. Cassandra and Helen. Both tragic Greek heroines. Cassandra saw the future but no one believed her, and was killed. Helen’s choices led to the Trojan War and its destruction.

god i love glass onion so much and everything about it. major spoilers ahead.
like let's talk about the characters. i love that they're all pieces of shit. interesting, well-written, clear pieces of shit. they are even called shitheads. and like. the "disruptors" are all clearly painted as self-serving rich bitches (haha get it?) who only care about money and their public image and are willing to stab (or shoot) people in the back for it, but even some of the side characters are morally gray.
whiskey, for example? no, she isn't as alt-right as duke nor isshe as misogynistic, but she still went along with it in his streams and helped duke. and the reason she was dating him in the first place was for her own money and public image. sure, not as bad as duke or the others, but she's not entirely pure.
even peg is still self-serving. she did agree with helen, and she tried to reel in birdie's ignorance, but even that was just her doing her job. she literally begged miles not to make birdie release the statement because she was worried about her own image. now, clearly she's not nearly as bad as any of the others, but how much of that is because she's morally superior and how much of it is because of her position? if she were a celebrity billionaire like the rest of them instead of an assistant, would she act the same?
the only characters that aren't focused on money and public image are the ones who aren't public figures. especially helen- benoit is world-famous, but helen is just a third-grade teacher who wants to avenge her twin sister. the lesson here is of course, power and fame corrupt. every character that gains fame and money are obsessed with keeping it, by any means necessary.
and to show this so thoroughly that it seeps into every detail of the movie, that i could spend hours writing about? goddamn that's a fantastic movie. it's a glass onion- you can see its core, but around it are a lot of layers that are harder to pick out. i could watch this movie fifteen times and still not get all the nuance, and that is what makes a good movie great in my opinion.
#the way i just wrote a full-ass essay on this movie lol#if i beefed up the intro and made it more formal my ap lang english teacher would be so proud#anyway i just needed to get this out cause i've been foaming at the mouth about this movie for the past three hours#now i can finally sleep#dragonn talks#dragonn writes#glass onion#glass onion spoilers#knives out 2 spoilers#queue

Ok so I'm sure someone will have already talked about this, but one thing I really loved about Glass Onion was the names, and two names in particular: Cassandra/Andi and Helen. See below the cut as there are spoilers
Now Cassandra and Helen are both figures in the Iliad, and I find it really interesting how in some ways, each of these sisters has links to their homeric namesakes.
First we have Andi or Cassandra. The figure in the Iliad was a woman who was gifted the power of prophecy and cursed so that said prophecies would never be believed. Andi, in the narrative suffers a similar treatment. In the trial she tells the truth, she speaks truly about the founding of the Alpha. And she is not believed. And also when she is discussing the fuel source with Miles, she makes the prediction that "it will all go up in smoke." Miles, being bull-headed, doesn't believe her. And yet it comes to pass through her sister setting the Glass Onion alight using that very same fuel source.
And speaking of her sister, Helen within the Iliad is a very interesting figure. However in this case I'm actually using evidence from its successor, the Odyssey. Within the Odyssey, there is a scene wherein Menelaus recounts how Helen used her powers of imitation to draw the Greek men, who were hidden in the Trojan horse, to come out and reveal themselves by mimicking the voices of their wives. Helen, within the film, does something similar. She poses as her sister to draw out her sister's murderer. Unlike Homeric Helen, she is of course far more successful in her endeavours but I think this parallel of imitating people to uncover something/someone is very cool.
But anyway, it was just a little detail that I thought was quite neat, and of course it could just be me reaching a little but I thought it was interesting. Thank you for entertaining my little rant about my favourite little niche and how it relates to a fantastic movie.

kind of wish they would have been a little bit more explicit about the guy being benoit blanc's romantic partner because. if it had been a woman i think people would have assumed it was his wife but because its a man i think a lot of folks either dont assume or think of the sherlock & watson housemate situation. there are some other hints to benoit being gay in the rest of the movie but its more "blink and you miss it", like with emerald being wlw in nope.
#also person in my notes its not just you i swear fkgngkkf theres many people ive seen not sure about this#anyway im glad rian johnson cleared it up ahead of time#knives out 2 spoilers#glass onion spoilers#knives out 2#knives out glass onion#glass onion
