So I'm trying to teach myself crochet from a book, and I'm like...you have SIX main stitches, not including "do I skip a stitch when I connect to the prev row? Do I put 2 stitches into the same stitch of the prev row?" (AKA "how to decrease or increase your stitches.")
Knitting has TWO. (3 if you include cast ons, which you ONLY use at the beginning.) And they're precise opposites (mirror images) of each other.
(Knitting increases are "make 2 stitches in prev row's stitch," [knit-front-back], "insert needle into yarn between stitches" [make 1], or "wrap yarn between stitches" [yarn over], and decreases are "insert needle into TWO stitches." So I guess those can count too.)
Knitting:
Knit (hold yarn behind, insert needle bottom-to-top, bring yarn to front between needles, pull through loop)
Purl (hold yarn in front, insert needle top-to-bottom, bring yarn to back between needles, pull through loop)
Crocheting:
Chain: wrap yarn, pull through 1 loop
Slip: pick up stitch, wrap yarn, pull through 2 loops
Single: pick up stitch, wrap yarn, pull through 1 loop, (wrap yarn, pull through 2 loops) x1
Half Double: wrap yarn, pick up stitch, pull through 1 loop, wrap yarn, pull through *3* loops
Double: wrap yarn, pick up stitch, (wrap yarn, pull through 2 loops) x2
Triple/Treble: wrap yarn 2 times, pick up stitch, (wrap yarn, pull through 2 loops) x3
Chain stitch - like a yarn over for knitting - doesn't connect to the previous row and therefore makes a little hole. Very useful for lacy designs! Slip, single, half double, double, and triple make progressively taller stitches.
I mean, I guess crochet's stitches are chain vs single, and then variations (expansions) of single, the way that knitting is knit vs purl, and then variations of those.
But still. Grumble grumble grumble, why is it so hard, mutter mutter mutter.
And, like literally ALL OF LIFE, the farther you dig into a subject, the more tiny subsidivisions and specializations people have made. Surface-level is easy. Expert level is CRAZY.

If you have no idea what fiber art to start with - as in, you aren't sure what you'll like, and don't have much of a clue - you should honestly start with a mixture of whatever piques your interest. Knitting needles and crochet hooks, at the least, are often very cheap per set brand-new, or you can look at secondhand stores if you want them cheaper (other fiber arts tools like looms may be more pricey, depending on what you want). If you can, look for classes such as a crafts class - a library might have something akin to this, some will have craft spaces with a variety of little crafters things.
There's sometimes this idea floating around that you are only permitted to do one craft at once - this isn't true. You are a multifaceted, complex person. It only makes sense, then, that your art is the same. Fiber art is an expression of one's humanity in its rawest form, no matter what you pick up. This goes for all art beyond the fiber arts, too! Art is an expression of your humanity. Let it express that šŸ’›

The only real difference is that crochet can't be done by a machine, which is why you should NEVER, EVER buy crocheted items from fast fashion brands. They aren't paying their workers well enough at all for them to be selling shit like that for 4$
this discourse between whether knitting or crochet is better/faster/etc. is BULLSHIT. Which is easier bc of counting more or less is BULLSHIT.
The only differences that truly matter are: Crochet hurts my carpal tunnel and Knitting hurts my arthritis and that's how I choose per project.

Maybe I did this to myself but it does irk me when people see me knitting and they ask who itā€™s for and I say itā€™s for me and the immediate reaction is ā€œyou should sell itā€ yeahā€¦ let me spend at least a weekā€™s worth of my free time making an item I like, want, and would wear just to sell it on etsy, making at most a Ā£2 profit on materials and not being compensated for my time whatsoever šŸ‘šŸ»
#i say maybe i did this to myself because historically i have gifted most of the items i have knitted#because the venn diagram of things i like to knit vs things i like to wear is actually 2 circles that donā€™t touch#i looove making hats. i HATE wearing hats#also i love making baby clothes but i donā€™t have a baby and iā€™m not going to have a baby#however lately iā€™ve gotten really into knitting socks and i really like to wear knit socks. itā€™s like the most affordable way for me to get#quality wool socks. and iā€™m going to be watching my shows anyway. the time will pass anyways#but it feels like people are deliberately making me feel weird for wanting to make stuff for myself and not profit off my hobby#and like iā€™ve made 3 pairs of socks to gift already because ā€˜tis the season or whatever. and iā€™ve started another pair for a friend whose#birthday is in january#genuinely itā€™s very weird to hear ā€˜you should sell itā€™ or ā€˜oh i want one!!ā€™ about an item iā€™m making for myself. after 18 years of gifting#or donating basically everything iā€™ve ever knitted. like iā€™ve gifted 2 double bed size crochet blankets#everyone iā€™ve known whoā€™s had a baby has gotten a cardigan or a blanket or hats or all of the above#i spent october making poppies for the church. iā€™ve never even stepped foot in my village church mind you. my neighbour asked me to help#do you know what i own? that iā€™ve knitted? a pair of mittens and a pair of socks.#you want some socks from me? alright. thatā€™s anywhere between Ā£6 and Ā£10 for the yarn and thatā€™s optimistic#iā€™m currently making myself a pair with hand-dyed yarn that cost me Ā£18 including delivery#the needles i use cost me more than Ā£10. timeā€¦ letā€™s call it 24 hours per sock#i donā€™t know anyone with 18 years experience who makes minimum wage so letā€™s call it an even 600 for my time. tbh#DO YOU SEE how this isnā€™t a viable side hussle??? i physically cannot charge what my socks are worth#if i like you and youā€™re willing to wait; socks are free or cost whatever the yarn costs#if i donā€™t like or know you venmo me Ā£620. and youā€™re still going to have to wait.#just pisses me OFF when people suggest i make an etsy page and they say it like theyā€™re doing me a favour or giving me great financial#advice. like youā€™ve seen me sitting here all evening and iā€™m barely done with the cuff.. do you actually think selling these for Ā£20 maximum#is going to help me out. iā€™m not selling them. theyā€™re FOR me. iā€™m making them because i want them#also when my friendā€™s family was saying this to me and i was like ā€˜well the yarn cost a fiverā€™ and they got quiet and i was thinking yeahā€¦#a fiver is the maximum you cheapskates would pay isnā€™t it. a fiver is cheap sock yarn bought on sale. or yarn that probably isnā€™t actually#good for socks. like donā€™t presume to give me financial advice when youā€™re this out of touch with the market please#next person who asks when iā€™m going to start selling socks is getting this whole rant in entirety tbh i donā€™t care anymore#personal#edited to add that i didnā€™t even get into etsy fees or whether i would even be noticed among the mountain of dropshippers LOL

Crocheting this skirt took me months fr. think about 40 hours in total. I donā€™t think Iā€™m the fastest crocheter but Iā€™m okay with that. Im trying to no longer feel the need to be quick when I do everything even though its pressured onto to me because of societes need for constant productivity. BUT ANYWAYSSS.
you can buy it here :) https://www.etsy.com/listing/1450984712/lace-crochet-maxi-skirt-in-natural-white
I lfooking love it mi. Sheā€™s super pretty. I used 100% pima cotton yarn in the colour natural white. I canā€™t remember the thickness of the yarn but I used a 2,5mm hook. Been tryna push this on my website I made imma post the process of me making that on here at some point I worked really hard on it. I fuck with the vision im tryna create with my crochet shit it gets me really excited. Im at Parsons right now and I feel like the more I get sucked into school the more I forget about what gets me really excites which is why it took me so long to make this skirt. I wanna start selling my shit and getting my name and brand out there in the creative world cause thereā€™s.so much shit I wanna do like I got so many ideas fr. I wanna be a furniture designer eventually. For now. But yh. Any tips on how to start selling ya shit. I find pushing it on social media like instagram and tiktok really annoying cause I feel like the atmosphere is really competitive almost like a operate workspace but on a digital setting. Trine pasta algorithms n shit. I just wanna find real people who fuck with what I do and value things that I value you know. But yh I put it up on Etsy and thinking bout putting it up on depop. On the website I created a bidding system cause I thought that would be a really great way to establish the interest on a piece, considering id only be selling one of kind items and not creating anything more than once. I just really see it as a form of art you know and not some mini fast fashion business where I just make as many things as quickly as possible and try sell em all. But yurrrrrrrrr

Semi-niche fiber craft discourse take here but I had to get it out of my brain because it was driving me insane.
ā€œMachines can knit but itā€™s impossible for a machine to crochetā€ is NOT TRUE. OBVIOUSLY.
The sentiment behind it is ā€œwe donā€™t have mass production crochet machines like we have mass production knitting machines.ā€ This is the true part.
However, people (mostly crocheters searching for some level of oneupsmanship over knitters for some reason) take that as ā€œcrochet has some magical property that makes it impossible for machines to doā€ when that is just obviously on the face of it blatantly not fucking true because literally why and how would it possibly be true.
If a machine can do the precise six axis movements required to assemble a car, why would that machine be incapable of the comparatively simple movements required to crochet? Thereā€™s no magical property that makes crochet anathema to automation. The only reason we donā€™t have mass production crochet machines isnā€™t because machines CANā€™T crochet, but because they donā€™t crochet EFFICIENTLY at an industrial scale at the moment because of the difference between the construction of knit stitches vs crochet stitches.
Thereā€™s no superiority there. People who uncritically repeat ā€œmachines canā€™t crochetā€ despite having every tool available to investigate that claim, including their own eyes on their craft and knowledge of the capabilities of robots, and the ability to literally GOOGLE ā€œROBOT CROCHETINGā€ and see videos of it right in front of their eyes, frustrate me to no end.
If you see a claim that is really absolutist, but upon some level of thought seems odd, please fact check it before you thoughtlessly repeat it for the sake of winning internet clout in niche rivalries that no one cares about except me.
And for the record, as someone who does both, knitting and crochet are equivalent. They have different strong suits, and if you can learn one you can learn the other. Neither of them is that difficult, neither of them is particularly special, neither of them should be a point of putting down people who prefer the other. If youā€™re a knitter who wants to make plushies consider picking up some crochet. If youā€™re a crocheter who wants to make smooth fabrics that drape well, consider picking up some knitting.
You donā€™t get to flex about your fiber craft unless youā€™re doing bobbin lacemaking, in which case god bless, that is witchcraft, and you are beyond all of us mere mortals.

Crochet abs knit girlies. As a crocheted I really wanna learn how to knit j just feel like thereā€™s so much more you can do with knitting and itā€™s just a different area a different fieldddd. Is it worth it? Like is knitting harder or easier than crochet and how long wld it say it takes to learn if you know how to crochet. Also does knitting take longer to do as Iā€™ve heard it takes a lot longer?

You know you into yarn when you have headcanons about what spindles characters would particularly like, what they prefer to do with the yarn, what type of wheel spinner they are, and who has 17 projects going on at once (Anakin) vs whoā€™s gonna focus almost entirely on one project as they go through thought spindle spinning a fine yarn, plying and washing enough of it for a blanket, immediately sticking it on the loom, and weaving a particularly intricate pattern (Obi-Wan) vs whoā€™s the ā€˜I add the knots of silk and locks so that I can live in the moment and let chunks come out when they need toā€™ (as if I even have to say it, itā€™s Qui-Gon)-
ANYWAYS. I actually love yarn and think that yarn craft should be more in fics but thatā€™s sorta like how lots of chefs and bakers make a lot of foodie fics like itā€™s nice but. Everyone eats. Not enough people care about Scottish spindles. Obi-Wan has 7 Scottish spindles and like 8 Turkish ones so he can make a blanketā€™s worth of yarn in a single go without having to unwind them and ply right away. Qui-Gon likes supported spindles and a traditional wheel. Anakin designs and makes his own electric spinners, electric yarn counters, and electric cone winders. And then he knits Padme shawls. Qui-Gon crochets blankets and keeps leaving them in the creche or outside random apartments in the temple. Obi-Wan weaves. Anakin spent 5 hours learning how to dye fiber in Padmeā€™s favorite colours, made an electric wool carder to make batts of them, spent a solid 15 hours spinning enough for a massive shawl in lace weight yarn for his wife, knit her one, and then went back to his ADHD project hopping.
I have ideas!!!!!!

just saw a pinterest comment that suggested learning how to crochet instead of learning how to knit because it's easier and i can't keep silent anymore i have to confess that i wrote my cass learns how to knit fic because i need people to love knitting in the same way that i need people to love cass. the crochet vs knitting metaphor argument exists because i've had that conversation (minus the metaphor and also it was jokingly silly with my friends) with me arguing the side of knitting and as much as i love projecting onto characters stephanie brown would never in her life be against crochet. she would adore crochet. i don't actually dislike crochet its good for things that knitting will never be able to do like baskets and is so much better for stuffed animals and i think it's better for things like bralettes and bags but knitting is so good for clothing it's stretchy and more flowy. crochet is so good for items that need to hold a little more structure but in my opinion knitting makes more comfortable clothing and crochet got so popular in the last couple of years but knitting did not and knitting is not more difficult!! knitting is fun and good and i love her!!!
