So.
After 3 and a half years of keeping spiders today I grabbed one of them with my hand in order to confirm if it’s a male or female.
Tumblr media
It’s a Lasiodora klugi and I’m not stupid enough to do this with my bare hands as their urticating hairs are one of the worst out there.
Still - were I to fuck up I could hurt the spidewr or the spider could hurt me - it’s still not fully grown but those fangs are not something I want in my hand.
Still - I succeeded on my 4th attempt - failing first 3 mostly from being spooked by the spider jerking away from my hand.
Results?
That little triangle seen between two yellow spots behind it’s hind legs are a clear indicator that this is a male.
Weirdly enough I didn’t see it when I was holding the spider - it only became clearly visible on the photo. Still - I had a good hunch already.
First - I failed to find spermatheca on this spider’s molts before. Second - before taking photo I checked manually - by pressing the abdomen with a swab to see if it “opens” around there and found nothing either.
So yeah. I got myself a male of a species that few years ago was thought to had all it’s males die out in captivity in Europe (basically nobody was breeding them between 2014 and 2019 and males don’t live for very long).
Might be his fathers genes then - he’s 3 years old and still not mature. A slow growing male is probably what allowed someone to get an eggsac back then.
PS.
Yes - I still have that hand.

A list of enclosures I have made in no particular order plus what is kept in them:
bioactive leopard gecko terrarium
Tumblr media Tumblr media
live plants: curly spider plant, snake plant, various airplants, jade plant, donkey tail succulent, sunrise succulent, string of buttons succulent, unknown plant
clean up crew: springtails and orange powder isopods
houses: tonchu (clown g cross with raptor morph leopard gecko)
notes: tonchu refuses to eat mealworms loves silkworms and dubia roachs, he also has wax worms as a treat. hes very picky about eating and often wants to explore out of his enclosure. his favorite activities include having me hold the food bowl for him, climbing his background and stalking.
betta fish tank (incomplete)
Tumblr media
live plants: anubias barteri, elodea densa, java moss, moss ball
will house: longfinned betta fish and either a apple snail or nerite snail (havent decided but they will both deal with the algae)
changes: first im going to be changing out the filter for a sponge filter because im not happy with the high flow and the space it takes up for a 25l tank. im going to be adding another hide on the ground and ordering some floating plants called salvinia cucullata to block the light. ive also ordering some limestone to increase the ph levels. overall still learning as this is my first time with aquariums.
isopod terrarium
Tumblr media Tumblr media
no live plants but they do have a fake succulent
houses: armadillidium klugi 'montenegro' AKA clown isopods (they also have some springtails in there to prevent mold)
notes: the clowns love sweet potato
jumping spider terrarium
Tumblr media Tumblr media
live plants: broom moss, jewel orchid, spanish moss airplant, ivy leaved toadflax (newest addition)
cleanup crew: springtails, dwarf white isopods
houses: unfortunately my regal jumping spider pumpkin has died from unknown causes
notes: when alive pumpkin loved taking down moths, also the isopods love the ivy leaved toadflax so im hoping they dont eat it all
future plans: unfortunately I am banned from owning anymore pets currently but my future plans are eventually owning a crested gecko, tokay gecko, day gecko, chinese cave gecko, red-eyed crocodile skink, monitor lizard, millipede, velvet spider and many more isopods species such as rubber ducky

They are so active! I love how passive they are to light and being held, my others are all over the place and can’t stay still. I bought some new species as soon as these guys got settled into their new home. What can I say, I got a problem for isopods... you can even see one of the juvenile clowns in the first picture!!

My Lasiodora klugi molted overnight.
About damn time as the last molt was... In May 2021... Well... That’s a long time, eh?
Anyway. I’ve had this spider for well over 2 years now and I guess it’s time to check if it’s a she or a he.
Well. If the spider takes this long between molts my bet would be on female as males mature more rapidly.
Also - this is the 10th molt in my care and the spider is still not that big.
Weird - I’ve heard they grow fast and reach great size quickly. might have something to do with it not being that eager to eat after previous molt.
She refused food for a few times between May and now. I’d say half of the time between molts the spider was on a hunger strike.
Well. I’ll give her a week to harden her new exoskeleton and then provide some fat roaches.
