The Unseen Cost of Beauty: How Cosmetic Packaging Impacts Climate
Tumblr media
In the beauty and personal care industry, much attention is given to products' allure—their ingredients, benefits, and presentation. Yet, hidden behind the glossy packaging and sleek designs lies an inconvenient truth: the environmental cost of cosmetic packaging. While we enjoy these products in our daily routines, their packaging contributes to a mounting global issue—climate change.
The Packaging Problem
Each year, the cosmetics industry produces over 120 billion units of packaging, much of which is single-use plastic and non-recyclable. From tiny serum bottles to large shampoo containers, the accumulation of waste is staggering. Most of these products are housed in complex, multi-layered packaging that is often difficult to recycle, leading them to pile up in landfills or pollute our oceans. Plastic waste from cosmetics packaging is a significant contributor to environmental degradation, but the impact goes far beyond waste alone. The entire life cycle of packaging—from the extraction of raw materials, manufacturing processes, transportation, to the eventual disposal—leaves a heavy carbon footprint. Each of these stages consumes energy and emits greenhouse gases, accelerating global warming.
Carbon Footprint of Cosmetics
The beauty industry’s carbon footprint is often overlooked. A significant portion comes not just from the product but from its packaging. Materials like plastic, aluminum, and glass have different impacts, but all require energy-intensive manufacturing. Plastic, derived from fossil fuels, is one of the worst offenders, as it releases CO2 during production and contributes to pollution after disposal. Unfortunately, even eco-conscious packaging solutions sometimes have hidden environmental costs. Biodegradable packaging may require specific conditions to decompose properly, and the recycling process for materials like glass or aluminum still consumes energy.
Moving Towards Sustainable Packaging Solutions
Thankfully, the beauty industry has started to wake up to this issue, and there is growing momentum toward more sustainable practices. Here are some key strategies making a difference:
Refillable Systems: One innovative approach that’s gaining traction is the use of refillable packaging. Brands like Lush and Kjaer Weis offer products in refillable containers, reducing the demand for single-use packaging. Consumers can return or refill their existing containers, helping to close the loop on packaging waste.
Biodegradable and Compostable Materials: More companies are turning to biodegradable alternatives like cornstarch-based plastics, mushroom-derived packaging, or paper-based solutions. These materials are eco friendly containers that break down more easily, reducing the amount of long-lasting waste in the environment.
Recycling Initiatives: Many beauty brands are adopting recycling programs that encourage consumers to return their empty containers. These programs ensure that packaging materials are disposed of properly and repurposed, preventing them from ending up in landfills or oceans.
Minimalist and Lightweight Packaging: A growing trend toward minimalist packaging is another sustainable strategy. By stripping down to the essentials, companies reduce the need for excessive materials, which in turn lowers their carbon footprint. Lightweight packaging also requires less fuel to transport, making distribution more eco-friendly.
Innovations in Packaging Design: Advances in technology are driving the development of sustainable design solutions, such as waterless products (e.g., shampoo bars), which reduce packaging needs altogether, or single-material packaging that simplifies recycling.
At TLCforyou, we are committed to sustainable beauty, and we invite you to join us in our journey towards reducing environmental impact. Our products are packaged in eco-friendly areca palm-plant based packaging and reusable glass bottles and jars that are planet friendly packaging materials. With our no-plastic policy, we strive to protect our planet from the damaging effects of plastic waste. We encourage you to reuse our packaging and make mindful choices that support a cleaner, greener future for all. Let’s work together to care for your skin and our Earth, one conscious decision at a time.

Eco-Friendly Beauty Swaps: Sustainable Alternatives to Popular Makeup Products
Tumblr media
Most of our favorite beauty products have a hidden cost (which we'll soon get into). But don’t worry! Making small, eco-friendly beauty swaps can be just as glamorous, without compromising the planet.
A Little Beauty "Something" You Should Know
The beauty industry generates over 120 billion units of packaging each year. Most of it isn't recyclable. And then there’s the actual makeup itself, filled with synthetic chemicals, microplastics, and ingredients that don't do our skin and environment any good.
Don't attack me yet, I'm not saying you shouldn't put on some lipstick or powder. What I'm really trying to say is; how can we look good while doing good? It all starts with swapping out a few key items.
1. Foundation
One of the biggest culprits in the beauty world is foundation bottles. They’re often made of plastic or come in unrecyclable glass.
Eco Swap: Try a refillable foundation. Many brands now offer foundations in reusable containers. Brands like Kjaer Weis and Elate Cosmetics are paving the way by offering eco-friendly packaging and natural, skin-loving formulas.
These brands allow you to purchase refills, minimizing waste. Not only are these organic ingredients better on your skin, but you’ll also cut down on single-use plastic packaging....a win-win!
2. Lipsticks
Lipsticks are another beauty staple that frequently comes in non-recyclable tubes. The good news? Sustainable alternatives exist that deliver just as much pigment and hydration.
Eco Swap: Go for biodegradable or refillable lipstick tubes. Brands like Axiology make lipsticks using all-natural ingredients and biodegradable packaging. RMS Beauty also offers lipsticks in glass and aluminum packaging, both of which are much easier to recycle than traditional plastic.
3. Mascara
Mascara is a makeup must-have, but traditional mascara tubes and wands contribute significantly to waste. Most mascara tubes aren't recyclable due to the mix of plastic and metal components.
Eco Swap: Opt for a zero-waste or refillable mascara. Companies like Trestique and Izzy Zero Waste Beauty offer mascaras with refillable components, cutting down on plastic waste. The packaging is sleek, chic, and eco-friendly, proving that sustainability can still be stylish.
4. Makeup Brushes
Ever thought about what your makeup brushes are made of? Well, many brushes are crafted from the “same ole” synthetic, non-biodegradable materials.
Eco Swap: Look for makeup brushes made from sustainable materials like bamboo and recycled aluminum. EcoTools and Bamboo Naturals offer high-quality, eco-friendly brushes that work just as well as conventional ones. Plus, bamboo is a renewable resource, making it an excellent choice for sustainability.
5. Cleansing Wipes
Makeup removal wipes can be quite convenient, but they’re often non-biodegradable and full of chemicals that aren’t great for your skin or the planet.
Eco Swap: Instead of single-use wipes, try reusable cotton rounds or cloths. Brands like LastObject and Marley’s Monsters offer washable, reusable cotton pads that can be used over and over again. They’re gentle on your skin and reduce the amount of waste generated by your beauty routine.
6. Eyeshadow Palettes
Eyeshadow palettes are often made with plastic, magnets, and mirrors, making them nearly impossible to recycle. An alternative?
Eco Swap: Opt for palettes made with recyclable or compostable materials. Aether Beauty is one brand leading the way, offering gorgeous eyeshadow palettes in zero-waste packaging. The best part? Their formulas are cruelty-free, vegan, and filled with ethically sourced ingredients.
7. Powder Products
Powders like blush, bronzer, and setting powders are another area where waste adds up, especially when packaged in bulky plastic compacts.
Eco Swap: Look for brands that offer refillable powder products. Tata Harper and Alima Pure offer beautiful options with refillable packaging, ensuring you can keep your favorite shades while cutting back on waste.
Why It Matters
You might be thinking, “Do these small swaps really make a difference?” Yes, they do! Every step toward sustainability, no matter how small, contributes to a bigger change. By choosing products that are kind to the environment, you’re voting with your wallet for a future that’s not just beautiful, but also sustainable.
With all that Said
Switching to eco-friendly beauty alternatives doesn’t mean sacrificing quality or style. In fact, many sustainable beauty brands offer high-performing products with the added bonus of being kind to the environment. By making thoughtful swaps, you can still enjoy your beauty routine while helping reduce waste and protect the planet.
So the next time you’re shopping for makeup, ask yourself: can this be reused, refilled, or recycled? Let’s prove that beauty and sustainability can go hand in hand and look fabulous while doing it!
Signing out, kad

Do you have a good lip color recommendation?
i don't wear a ton of lipstick tbh, depends on your skin tone and what you like. generally i like warm/peachy nudes and cool/berry rosy tones, i'm not a red lipstick gal
the tinted balms by ilia are really nice, i have the shade lullaby and it's a very pretty cool rosy toned my lips but better colour. i have the tower 28 gloss in pistachio and it's a really flattering neutral nude, not sticky at all. i also have the dior lip glow which is fine i guess but i never wear it
otherwise i've pretty much been using exclusively la bouche rouge because i'm trying to reduce waste by using makeup with refillable packaging, plus the cases are made with leftover hermes leather which is cunt. the formulas are good but honestly not amazing, the kjaer weis ones might be better but i've never tried. i have rosewood which is a nice nude, i use it the most but it's a little too pink for my liking. i got le nude veronika as well which is warmer and really pale and kind of makes me look like a cadaver but it's kind of grown on me, i've mixed the two and it looks nice. i also got le rose tuileries which is a deep cranberry colour, it's a beautiful shade for winter but i overestimated how much i would wear it, it makes me feel like i'm doing too much lol. it's so hard ordering online because their photos are all photoshopped but their instagram and ssense tend to have more accurate representations, i'm interested in getting le nude brun matte and le rose saint germaine next

I love doing a smokey eye – especially when it’s not just basic black. Playing with various tones of brown is one of my favorite things to do for nearly all skin tones – from the most fair, to deep, dark complexions, and all shades in between. To recreate the above look I did on Annaliese, for yourself, you’ll need:Two brown shadows (i chose Transcend from Kjaer Weis as my base shade, and Wisdom, also from Kjaer Weis, as my deeper shade – and when layered, the two created the deepest part around the crease and lash lines)A black eyeliner pencil (I chose Hypnotist from W3LL People)A creamy brown shimmery eye crayon (I chose Age of Consent from Ilia Beauty)A creamy highlighter for the inner corners (I like Ilia Beauty ‘Cosmic Dancer‘) Begin by outlining the shape you’ll want with the lightest of your two brown shades. On all face shapes – no matter your eye shape – the most flattering overall shadow look is one that angles slightly upwards at the outer edge of the eye. This is why so many youtube video makeup tutorials show a short piece of tape being applied to the outer edge, so that no shadow (or liner) falls/is drawn below it. Shadow or liner that has a downward sloping outer edge tends to drag the face down.Once you’ve pressed (notice I specify to PRESS your shadow into your skin. Do not sweep or fan your color on. The correct placement of the pigment is what sets apart a messy shadowed eye from a beautifully done smokey eye, and for the latter, you’ll need to be precise about how much and where you put it!) your light brown shadow into the approximate shape that is most flattering to your face (experiment! You can always use cotton swabs to wipe away what doesn’t look good), you can begin pressing your deeper brown shadow in a sideways V form, starting along the outer corner of the eye, and along the crease (if your eye has a crease, of course). Take a good fluffy eyeshadow brush and blend, blend, blend, so that the two become seamless, and the edges are diffused into your naked skin.Take your sharpened black liner and gently dot along the top lash line, smudging along the way with a skinny smudge brush, or cotton swab. Experiment with your eye shape – does a bit of black liner smudged along the bottom lash line look good? Then do it!Finish the look by adding your highlights: Using the creamy, shimmery brown shadow crayon, drag it along the top of the lash line, just behind the lashes, staying close to the lash line. This will serve to highlight the area behind your lashes, drawing attention to them.Take your creamy pale highlighter (choose a deeper shade if your skin tone is darker than Annaliese), and press it into the inner corner of your eyes for a little added flare.Curl and coat your lashes with a few swipes of black mascara… et voila! BEAUTY!

doing a smokey eye – especially when it’s not just basic black. Playing with various tones of brown is one of my favorite things to do for nearly all skin tones – from the most fair, to deep, dark complexions, and all shades in between.
To recreate the above look I did on Annaliese, for yourself, you’ll need:
Two brown shadows (i chose Transcend from Kjaer Weis as my base shade, and Wisdom, also from Kjaer Weis, as my deeper shade – and when layered, the two created the deepest part around the crease and lash lines)
A black eyeliner pencil (I chose Hypnotist from W3LL People)
A creamy brown shimmery eye crayon (I chose Age of Consent from Ilia Beauty)
A creamy highlighter for the inner corners (I like Ilia Beauty ‘Cosmic Dancer‘)
Begin by outlining the shape you’ll want with the lightest of your two brown shades. Shadow or liner that has a downward sloping outer edge tends to drag the face down.
Once you’ve pressed  (notice I specify to PRESS your shadow into your skin. Take a good fluffy eyeshadow brush and blend, blend, blend, so that the two become seamless, and the edges are diffused into your naked skin.
Take your sharpened black liner and gently dot along the top lash line, smudging along the way with a skinny smudge brush, or cotton swab.  Experiment with your eye shape – does a bit of black liner smudged along the bottom lash line look good? Then do it!
Finish the look by adding your highlights: Using the creamy, shimmery brown shadow crayon, drag it along the top of the lash line, just behind the lashes, staying close to the lash line. This will serve to highlight the area behind your lashes, drawing attention to them.
Take your creamy pale highlighter (choose a deeper shade if your skin tone is darker than Annaliese), and press it into the inner corner of your eyes for a little added flare.
Curl and coat your lashes with a few swipes of black mascara… et voila! BEAUTY! xx
