The third round of the Mixed Doubles sector of the US Open continued with eighth seeds Aldila Sutjiadi/Rohan Bopanna, who previously stunned Katerina Siniakova/John Peers 0-6, 7-6(7), [10-7] in the second round after making adjustments to steadily turn it around in the second set, took on fourth seeds Barbora Krejcikova/Matthew Ebden, who defeated wild cards Iva Jovic/Kaylan Bigun 6-2, 6-3 in the previous round. Interestingly, R. Bopanna/M. Ebden were also previously eliminated in the Men's Doubles sector, which could become another intriguing part to add to the pairs' dynamics, which balance was needed to stand out in this match.
Right at the first game, a perfect volley poach from M. Ebden created his and B. Krejcikova's break point, which ended up being converted due to Dila's double fault (2-0) as the eighth seeds might have had a shaky start. Somehow, even though M. Ebden's +1 failed volley forced the deciding point before they held their serves to 3-0. Dila then might have started the game with a double fault, but they survived a deciding point where a successful serve+1, with a working backhand finish to hold his serves to 3-1.
Subsequently, R. Bopanna's swift backhand return paved the way as they led by 2 points before M. Ebden's double fault forced a deciding point 3 points later, where a forehand-to-forehand exchange, which ended in the latter's forehand error, secured the break-back to 3-2. The eighth seeds then continued by levelling the play with a service game hold to 3-3, and both pairs continued most of the play with their net exchanges, which also played a significant role in their balance. Somehow, the electronic line-calling error interrupted the play as the fire alarm in the building housing the team running the call causing them to evacuate, but Dila/R. Bopanna held their serves to 5-5 upon returning after their 2-point lead.
Afterward, R. Bopanna's perfect poach at the net minimized the gap by one point in the first set, but B. Krejcikova/M. Ebden held their serves to 6-5. As R. Bopanna smashed it to 6-6, the tie-breaker became inevitable, where the eighth seeds got the mini-break due to a serve+1 error from B. Krejcikova's forehand side to 3-1. The former pair consolidated their lead to 4-1, and still ended up taking the first set 7-6(4) to set themselves ahead in this match.

US Open XD R2: Aldila Sutjiadi/Rohan Bopanna [8] def. Katerina Siniakova/John Peers 0-6, 7-6(5), [10-7] Match Stats
📸 Eurosport LV
K. Siniakova/J. Peers' dominance aged well once Dila/R. Bopanna dialed in, but the latter started turning it around thanks to the adjustments they made on their pace. This way, even though the unseeded pair scored 40 shot winners, which was 17 more than Dila/R. Bopanna, the former committed 16 unforced errors, 5 more than the eighth seed as they got steadily outhit toward the end of the match credits to the latter's point construction.
Interestingly, K. Siniakova/J. Peers had stronger first serves thanks to their first serve dominance, while this match became return-heavy in some critical moments. Despite only landing 58% of their first serves, they overwhelmingly won 85% of their first serve points, 14% more than Dila/R. Bopanna. Somehow, the former's second serve problems in the tie-breaker allowed the eighth seeds to step in, attacking back as they absorbed the rhythm and inject more pace in their follow-up shots.
In tomorrow's quarterfinals, Dila/R. Bopanna will face fourth seeds Barbora Krejcikova/Matthew Ebden, who previously defeated a talented pairing in Iva Jovic/Kaylan Bigun 6-2, 6-3 in a straightforward manner, as it also highlighted a contrast in experience. As the eighth seeds' second-round victory denied a B. Krejcikova v. K. Siniakova showdown, and instead, it brought R. Bopanna v. M. Ebden showdown as regular Tour doubles partners, this could be intriguing to see how their dynamics can be approached in this match, especially on their point construction in this field. It might not be easy, but who knows!
