Sorry to bother you but how was Love In Hate Nation? I’m really interested in the show but I can’t see it so I’m desperate to hear about it from anyone

not a bother at all!!! i’m so sorry i didn’t see this until now!!

disclaimer, i’m not a big joe iconis fan for a couple of reasons, though i did like his work on smash. but the words “lesbian” and “musical” together tend to set off kill bill sirens in my head so i begrudgingly decided to drive myself and @revengeparty to jersey and see if this man could, in fact, not completely butcher a story about lesbians.

to my pleasant surprise, i REALLY enjoyed lihn. there were definitely some cringe moments where you could tell it was written by a cis, straight, white man, but for an attempt at tackling some pretty nuanced issues taking place in a tumultuous time period, he did a bang up job of it. the songs were bops (the three failed escape attempts of sheila nail? ICONIC. the other one? RELATABLE. oh well? PURE. and so on), the book was strong if imperfect, and the performances blew me away. it was also just really fucking funny sometimes. think “but i’m a cheerleader,” but make it a musical set in the 60s.

also, i don’t want to spoil it, but the ending made me tear up a little; it wasn’t a “ride off into the sunset” happy ending, necessarily, it was…realistic yet uplifting and that’s what i like to see.

gwen and i both agreed if it wasn’t closing the next day and if two river weren’t so far, we would’ve gone back to see it again. i’m definitely hoping it continues to be developed and i get to see more of it in the future. i’m a fan.

[What’s your favorite line Kitty has?] “What that bitch say?”

[How’d Ya-Ya end up in Nation?] Sydney (Ya-Ya): It’s a very long story, but to put it lightly, reckless, wild behavior.

[What traits do you share with Kitty? What traits does Kitty have that you would like to have?] They both love a quick, quippy joke, but Emerson’s got nothing on her in terms of the beating of one’s face.

[I heard your sister was Kitty in the Penn State production. Did she give you any advice?] It’s true! She taught me Kitty’s full heart first and foremost. And continues to instruct me on how to walk like you’re always posing.

Tatiana Wechsler (Judith Ramone), November 27

[Is there any kind of scenery/props only actors are supposed to see (not the audience)?] In Act 2, a lot of the girls don’t get a break to go offstage, so water is stored in Secret Places on the stage to let them get a drink.

[What are the cigarettes you use on stage?] E-cigarettes with water vapor; they have batteries and need to be charged.

[What’s the fastest quick change in the show?] Ryan has a lot of the fastest changes, since he has to switch between Buzz, Doc Shock, and Francis.

[Is it a lot harder to move around the stage / learn blocking with an eyepatch on?] YES. Tatiana practiced with an eyepatch as early as she could, and the current eyepatch lets her see more than the rehearsal eyepatch, but it still takes a lot of getting used to.

[I know a character has a uke, does the actor actually play it?] Yes, Amina Faye (Susannah) actually does play the ukulele.

[What is your favorite thing about your character Judith Ramone?] She’s a survivor. It comes out in nasty ways sometimes, but she is always fighting to survive.

[Favorite line you get to say as Judith?] No spoilers, but it starts with “get your little white ass…”

[Do you think you will be releasing an official soundtrack / recording of the show for us foreign fans?] That would be great! We don’t know.

[What is your favorite cut moment from the show that is also a secret handshake?] {Tatiana and Lena, in costume as Judith and Dorothy, do a handshake that involves slapping hands, slapping their chests, moving their feet, and tapping elbows, while singing “‘cuz we’re badass, ‘cuz we’re badass!”}

[Any funny on-stage mishaps or line flubs you wanna share?] Beds going away, blood everywhere, mics falling off… just lots of things.

[I saw the show during previews, has there been any big changes to the show since previews?] Staging has changed, some lines got cut, things were rearranged, but nothing big has changed.

[What do you think happens to Judith after the show?] She deals with all her trauma and becomes a therapist. If you were to see her, she’d be very chill and relaxed and would be like, “oh, you would have never believed what I was like as a teen!”

[What’s the hardest part of Judith’s character to bring to life?] No spoilers, but it’s the scene with Miss Asp, because that’s when you get to see why she is the way she is, and that’s hard to think about the whole time.

[Judith and Ya-Ya seem to be decently good friends, do you think there’s some backstory there?] Tatiana thinks Judith had a younger sister and Ya-Ya reminds her of that sister; Sydney chimes in to say that Judith and Ya-Ya are Absolutely Best Friends even if Tatiana denies it.

[When did your verse from Life in Hate Nation get cut? I heard it during Guggenheim but not the show.] With new musicals, things have to get cut, and things get cut for the sake of flow and time… and Tatiana doesn’t miss the verse.

[Best and worst qualities of Judith?] She’s a survivor, and she’s a fighter, but she’s mean and rude.
