Hello tumblr!! I’m not dead, surprise! I’ve been busy with uni, and my mental health took a swift nosedive at the start of term. I’m still struggling to be honest, but I had no uni work for this weekend so I had time for indulgent newsies fanart so yippee!! I was also avoiding tumblr to prevent both bbc ghosts and ofmd season 2 spoilers, but I’m caught up on both now and am going slightly insane about both. Hopefully I’ll be a little more active from now on, but I’m still having to be gentle with myself.

john proctor is the villain + liability by lorde

thinking about in john proctor is the villain when mr smith comes back and talks to beth and when she asks what happened with the school board, he says “well there wasn’t a lot of proof”
not ‘she had no proof because nothing happened’ but ‘there wasn’t a lot of proof’…
he’s so confident that no one would believe shelby that he doesn’t even worry about saying things like that that could implicate him

I just saw John Proctor is the Villain and I'm thinking so much about the scene of Shelby and Raelynn at the gas station.
How it is the only scene in the play that doesn't take place in the classroom. The two of them have a scene together earlier, but its different this time. In this moment it's just them, away from Carter's influence, away from Lee, away from everyone and everything else that is going on. Yes they talk about all those other things, but in that scene all that matters is them and that they are people and they are friends and a lot of terrible things happened to them but they are going to be together as they work through it all.
Nothing is okay and it might not get better for a really long time but for now they will laugh about it together. Because right now it's just them.

im sorry youve had a rough week : (
what do you think is the best newsies cast you've seen/what is your favourite cast ?
i literally had all of this typed out and then the app refreshed. AUGH.
ANYWAYYY i feel like the uk cast is HANDS DOWN the best cast i’ve ever seen. what michael, ryan, and bronté did for jack, david, and katherine really revitalized the show- they added sooo much character depth just with their mannerisms. for instance, michael and bronté understood Jatherine in a way that made people get it, and their chemistry was off the charts. michael’s position as a black man made all of his character choices for jack so much more meaningful- like the way the delancey’s rough him up, or the ‘girls like you don’t fall for guys like me’ scene- and outside of his physical appearance, michael made jack feel more like a dreamer. bronté changed the game for katherine’s assurance of herself and really became part of the group in a way that i haven’t seen before. ryan’s portrayal of david made him feel more like a scared teenage boy on the outskirts of the norm and less like the proverbial Mom Friend archetype. josh barnett played racetrack as strong and angry and gritty, a great leader with too much on his shoulders, making it impossible to see him as just comedy relief. matthew duckett’s crutchie took away the notion that crutchie is just the ‘sunshine happy everything’s gonna be okay!’ character- he made him older, made him feel more grounded, more dire. clarice julianda and lillie-pearl wildman took spot conlon, typically portrayed as a hypermasculine angry man, and gave her more depth and more importance even with just a few lines because of their positions as women of color, yes, but more importantly they made her feel SO community-minded, and that’s necessary for the brooklyn newsies.
this cast was revolutionary and i really think people moved on from it wayyyy too fast. dare i say uksies is better than livesies will ever be
anywhosies— thank you so much for the ask!!

I'm fired up about this again so y'all fuckers are gonna hear about this more.
I've noticed a huge problem in the Newsies fandom that's been called out many times by people but that no one has cared about when it's happened. So I'm going to do it again.
Don't just make content about the straight white boys. I see you all ignoring Romeo and Finch and Smalls when they've all been played by actors of colour. Make content for them! I want to hear about the newsies of colour. And talk about Medda! She is a black woman with her own theatre in 1899 and you guys just causually "forget" about her. Historically a LOT of the Newsies were POC and immigrants.
And the rampant sexism, oh my god. GUYS. Every. Single. Fic. I have read. Has been about the boys. Medda is constantly demoted to the Sassy Black Woman stereotype, which is sexist, not even to beginning to talk about the racism. Hannah is basically non-existent and only exists as an assistant. Katherine is usually demoted to a stupid love interest, same with Sarah. They are all so much more than that!
And the fetishization of Crutchie, oh my god. Disabled people are not your "uwu soft bois!!1!1" That is ableist and not to mention gross.
TL;DR: Newsies fandom, your racism, sexism, and ableism is showing, and it is ugly. Write about the Newsies of colour. Write about the women. Don't fetishize Crutchie.
