There were so many books on so many shelves, I knew I could live to be old without coming to the end of them. The sound of the pages turning was the sound of magic. The dry liquid feel of paper under fingertips was what magic felt like.

2024 Book Recs - 5-6
5 - Crooked House by Agatha Christie
There's been some time since I’ve read an Agatha Christie novel and picked a good one this time. It’s a classic murder mystery with the victim being the old patriarch of a very rich family, and the suspects being everyone from his family, and the character who ends up in the role of detective is Charles who intends the marry one of the granddaughters of the murdered patriarch, and I do think this was a really good choice, because though I do like Poirot and Miss Marple I sometimes think that some of her finest writing appears on novels with the person who falls on the role of detective is closer to the crime like with And then there were none, and in this case is not just about solving the crime, but Charles figuring out who of his soon to be relatives is a killer and in general what he is marrying into, and all the family baggage that comes with the woman he is in love.
I had many theories about who the killer was and I was delightfully wrong in all my suspicions, it’s one of those stories with a lot of clues and elements that doesn’t seem to make sense until suddenly everything makes sense at the end, I think this is a novel that might be fun to reread one day.
Recommended for: People that like murder mysteries, stories about rich families with dark secrets and weird family dynamics. Fans of Knives Out and We have always lived on the castle
6 - Kissing the Witch: Old Tales in New Skins by Emma Donoghue
This book has a series of fairy tale retellings often with sapphic elements, and even in the stories that are not about lesbian love there is a great focus on female relationships and how women affect each other as friends, mentors or enemies. The author’s prose is beautiful, often feeling like poetry at some points but without disturbing the flow of the narratives. It has this element of one story pulling the other with the narrator of a story being a side character on the previous one (like the maid from The Goose Girl being the wicked stepmother in Snow White), what gives some sense of how the lives of the women depicted in the stories are intertwined in each other.
Recommended for: people that like fairy tale retellings, stories about queer women (both in the gay meaning and the odd and peculiar meaning), fans of This is how you loose the time war

What happened next, you ask? Never you mind. There are some tales not for telling, whether because they are too long, too precious, too laughable, too painful, too easy to need telling or too hard to explain. After all, after years and travels, my secrets are all I have left to chew on in the night. That is the story you asked for. I leave it in your mouth.

On the whole I am inclined to think that a witch should not kiss. Perhaps it is the not being kissed that makes her a witch; perhaps the source of her power is the breath of loneliness around her. She who takes a kiss can also die of it, can wake into something unimaginable, having turned herself into some new species.
