you cannot tell me they are not the perfect word for a kitty cat. they came up to us and introduced themselves, so we decided to call them by the name they call themselves, and in mandarin, we call them ""little māo"" because they are our little meow meows!! they are our babies!! also chinese is Ancient. our writing system goes back like 4000 years!! and we are still using it! i admit we probably weren't calling them �� for all these 4000 years but respect your elders! /lh

its a very well known word for cat, and also brought the world nyan cat (its a pun on the japanese word for meow (nyan) and neko, giving us "nyanko").

It is known that the linguistic sign is arbitrary, but if I could argue for a word (apart from onomatopoeias) that sounds like its meant to mean what it does, that's 'neko'

❝ Mmm well you’ll find it hard to destroy a kitchen when everyone who works there already knows YOU’RE NOT ALLOWED IN, not without supervision. ❞ And because of that there were plenty of teases about Sven being something akin to A CHILD when it came to not being allowed even late night snacks but it’s not like it wasn’t true. Sven was A COMPLETE DISASTER when it came to anything culinary.

Akira did love him though which is why he’d still haul Sven in for a kiss heedless of any morning breath that either of them may have to endure.

Swedes go: kiss-kiss-kiss or kss-kss-kss I think this might be because our pet name for (any) cat is “kissekatt”  Meanwhile you english speakers go “pussycat” to any random cat and then go “pspspsp”
