Yosuke: I was expecting physical gol- oh this is delicious. 

Masachika: Why are you snitching food, where are your manners?! 

Rintarou: That’s fine, that’s fine ☆ Eat your fill! 

Kiichi: Haha, with the gold statue and all these golden potatoes, everyone’s financial luck this year is bound to be high! ! 

Yuma: I didn’t know that! In that case, I’ll eat lots.

A gunshot rang out.

Shigure: Ah—

Touji & Takaomi: !!

—— Pointed toward the ceiling, the gun’s muzzle went off in a spray of petals and colorful paint.

Male Student A: Hahaha! Oh man! I’m totally covered in pink!

Male Student B: With green and yellow petals on top! Hakka-senpai, this is great!

“We want more!” “Give us an even more exciting show!”

Paralyzed by the nightlife’s wild thrall, the students were charged up with a bizarre fervor. Some had even begun to dance, covered head-to-toe in paint.

Touji: Wha… Settle down, all of you…! Stop pushing me…!

Takaomi: They’re totally out of their minds. Out of the goddamn way…!

Taking advantage of the chaos, the masked man roughly shook himself free from Shigure’s arms and took off running.

Shigure: We musn’t let him get away. Shishimaru-kun, Harimiya-kun—!

Takaomi: Like I said, quit giving me orders!

Touji: We’ve managed to chase him this far. I shall see the moment the Heavens strike him down with my own eyes!

Touji: SECRET ART! SUPER LONG-DISTANCE SHOE CATAPULT—! (NAME CREDIT: NITO-KUN) (he literally says the parentheses here im dead)

Takaomi: HUH!?

Masked Man: —!

As he took Touji’s shoe right to the back of the head, the man’s fleeing footsteps faltered.

— Not a single eye in the room failed to notice that very moment.

Takaomi: Making us run around for no reason… You’d better remember to compensate us with a Live Ticket.

Shigure: I shall make sure of it. I swear on the Family’s name.

Touji: Accept your fate! You may hide your face with that mask, but you cannot hide your sins!

The three of them had him surrounded.

There was nowhere left for the masked man to run.

Shigure: I shall reveal your true identity.

Masked Man: ……

Shigure faced the man and took a step toward him — and just then.

As the quiet snap of the man’s fingers rang out, the floor beneath the three of them suddenly disappeared.

They fell deeper and deeper into the pitch darkness.

Shigure: —— We will now begin our report on the “Illegal Dream World Organized by an Unknown Perpetrator”.

Mikage: Begiiin.

Hakka-san cast a cold gaze at me.

It seemed that my kindhearted attempt to lighten the suffocating atmosphere surrounding our three teachers wasn’t well-received. Bummer.

Shigure: Allow me to begin with a brief summary. If you log into the Yume System around 3:00 a.m., it is possible to enter this dream by inputting a specific operation code.

Saruwatari: Mhm, mhm. And?

Shigure:  Around the same time that students began summer vacation, an add-on for special app designed by Shinonome Gakuen that allows one to easily turn their smartphone into a Yume Mask began circulating.

Shigure: The ease of login combined with the students’ extended period of free time resulted in an explosive number of users joining the app craze.

Shigure: As we entered September and even up until present, the number of students logging in to this dream continues to increase.

Saruwatari: That’s wonderful!

Shigure: Eh…?

Saruwatari: I can see without a doubt that the developer is a brilliant person overflowing with curiosity, humor and entrepreneurial spirit! I can feel their passion.

Inoh: Should the acting chairman really be saying that...?

Saruwatari: Haha, sorry. I just couldn’t help getting worked up as I listened to that report.

Saruwatari: Certainly, it is a clear violation of the system’s fraud detection, but there’s something beautiful about it. Possessing such deep knowledge of the Yume System and using that knowledge so precisely, you can feel the attention to every evil detail, no?

Inoh: The work of someone familiar with the Yume System…

As he took a small jab from an elbow with a thwump, Kiritani-sensei furrowed his brow and looked carefully at the notebook laptop on his lap.

Kiritani: I’m analyzing the source code right now, but it’s encrypted so many times over you’d think they’re hiding the secrets to someone’s murder in there. What a pain in the ass.

Inoh: Don’t talk like that in front of your students. Always saying such things, it’s because you live such a lazy and undisciplined lifestyle that the culprit is looking down on us—

Turning toward Kiritani-sensei as he zoned out of Inoh’s scolding, I raised a finger and gave it a little wave.

Noticing the motion, Sensei sighed and let his gaze trail out the window.

Shigure: —Allow me to continue.

Shigure: The building’s exterior bears resemblance to the casinos in Las Vegas. Inside, there are various amusement areas on each floor.

Shigure: Just like a mobile game, players are given a common currency of play coins, and just by logging in every night, they can receive enough coins to keep playing throughout the entire night.

Shigure: And those who collect a large number of coins are granted access to the exclusive luxury VIP room on the top floor, where they can play even higher-stakes games.

Inoh: So it’s a system that makes you believe your worth is based on how much coin you possess.

Kiritani: Making people feel inferior even inside dreams, huh. Kids these days sure don’t have anything better to do.

Saruwatari: The dangerous point where dreams meet reality.

Shigure: This danger-filled dream has been hence nicknamed the “27club” (ninakurabu).

Shigure: Unfortunately, we failed to apprehend the suspicious figure last night, but the student council intends to continue its investigation to our fullest ability.

Mikage: Yes we dooo.

Saruwatari: We’re counting on you. If you make any progress in the investigation, however small, please tell me right away.

Watching Strawberry Night Saga ep 1 and not really impressed with the writing so far. Call it bias maybe (for me preferring the 2010′s TV Movie version) but I felt that the episode wasn’t written that well.

I mean, looking at the summary, I thought that the new series would be set before the original Strawberry Night case and featuring a younger Himekawa team (and maybe having the team encounter the SN case during the finale). But it looks now that Saga was a total remake with Team Hime being made younger and encountering the SN case. While I expect that the episode won’t be a direct copy of the TV Movie plot, I’m not impressed at how the 1st episode was focusing too much on the mundane details rather than the main plot that was the Team investigating the Strawberry Night case. Like if you watch the TV Movie and compare it to this 1st episode, you can tell how much the writing of the TV Movie was done better compared to Saga’s 1st ep.

The characters so far also don’t seem so impressive, Nikaido’s Himekawa was much too soft to faint over Gantetsu’s taunts on her past compared to Takeuchi’s Reiko, and she wasn’t as focused as Takeuchi’s Reiko at wondering why certain details about the investigation seems fishy and won’t give up until she finds the truth, even if she ended up churning out odd theories. And while yes, Hime’s past trauma was still haunting her... at least Takeuchi’s Hime don’t really let the others know of her weakness and you as viewer can only see it when she’s alone and thought she was being followed, or her aversion towards going into secluded areas. Or else, her Hime gave out the aura of a strong woman. But I didn’t see that so far in Nikaido’s Hime.

Saga’s Ioka’s level of annoyance was much more aggravating than Namase’s Ioka, who was quite likeable even when he’s still annoying, always asking for Reiko to marry him and trying to get chummy with the team even when he wasn’t invited. And at least Namase’s Ioka was portrayed as a decent detective instead of just as Hime’s stalker (like the reason he managed to find the place where Kitami led Hime to, was more because he did worry about Hime’s safety so he followed them just in case. And it’s cos he heard the gunshots was why he called for backup). Kame’s Kikuchi was lame so far, he seemed more like a rookie detective himself rather than a capable officer... but then who could really match up to Nishijima-sama’s Kikuchi? Kinda hope his character gets written better after this.

And as much as I love Eguchi Yosuke, his Gantetsu was not that intimidating as was Takeda Tetsuya’s Gantetsu. Like when Takeda’s Gantetsu first appears on screen you can already tell that he means business. You can really tell from his aura why he was given the nickname of Gantetsu or Iron Gun, like it’s no joking matter. Takeda’s Gantetsu also was much more shadier and darker. Saga’s Gantetsu, rather than being a nemesis to Hime as well as a major obstacle, he ended up actually helping Kikuta? And nicer? HUH? At least Takeda’s Gantetsu was fiercely opposing Hime because he’s aware of how dangerous Hime was as an officer due to her past and her over-reliance of her instincts. That’s why he’d stop at nothing (even if he had to resort to dirty tricks) to solve the case before Hime does (and get her off First Investigations).

Even Saga’s Otsuka was not as impressive as the TV Movie’s Otsuka. Like at least Kiritani’s Otsuka actually shows that he was trying to be as good as Hime at investigating cases (not just because she got her high rank while still at young age, even when she wasn’t on a career track), so that he could be proud to admit that he's Himekawa’s Number 1 apprentice/prodigy and he really do respect Hime as his superior officer. And his relationship with Takeuchi’s Hime was convincing enough that you can feel genuine sorrow from Hime when she found out that he was killed. You can also tell how much the whole team loved Otsuka and being devastated by his death. Am not even gonna talk about the rest of the team like Tamo-chan etc. Or even Imaizumi or the other higher-up officers. And in the original SN drama, there are other female police officers aside from Hime? Saga so far made it seem that Hime’s the ONLY female officers working at the precinct, which was odd really. And while yes, there is quite a bit of sexism in the workforce but it felt too forced in Saga that it was out of place.

Well, considering that Saga’s 1st ep was shorter by 30 minutes compared to SN 2010′s TV Movie, you might argue that that’s one reason why the episode was a bit forced. But really, the reason was more to the episode dragging the melodrama parts a bit too much rather than the main case. I mean, the TV Movie was not THAT much faster-paced compared to Saga’s first ep, but they got to the trail of the SN case WAY quicker than Saga, where the actual investigation was dealt as if it was just a side plot rather than the main. Like the other team members besides Kikuta and Otsuka actually DO get involved in the investigations and they’re not just there as decorations!

Well, it was just the first episode so far, so really hoping that the rest of Saga won’t be written so weak. Like you might wanna attribute it to the casts being less capable, but in the end, they still depend on the writing for their character’s personalities as well as the direction that the production team takes for their characters.
