The true chaos
Crack theory/headcanon/Somewhat of an au(?)/insane rambling/character analysis

Ok so I WILL do a crackshit theory about how Sonic is actually just the positive manifestation of chaos and this the same being
First one to say "so this is just the Kirby lore" will be sent to the guillotine /j
This is barely a theory, I'll basically be 10% making actual points and 90% just saying stuff because it sounds narratively cool
Obligatory "English isn't my first language don't give me shit if something is written poorly"
OK SO CHAOS AND SONIC PARALLELS

Letting Sonic speak for himself for a moment, the game itself brings to life the parallels this is not something I'm pulling out of my ass
They're both one in the same as the song says, forces of chaos (literally) that do what they think is right, the only difference is that Chaos' heart is tinted with pain, and as the song itself says, evil, while Sonic is devoid of it, and in a way, pure
Also line from the song that always stuck up to me:
"I'm not gonna think this way nor will I count on others"
Which is such an odd thing for Sonic to say, right? Why wouldn't he count on others? In the game the other characters are who gathered the chaos emeralds and the people cheering him up is what got him to transform into super sonic
Except that's wrong, because what Sonic's doing there is appealing to his feelings, because he understands Chaos' reasoning
That first part, "I'm not gonna think this way", because he can't say he gets how he feels. Again, he's devoid of that pain that's been tormenting Chaos for thousands of years by this point. He's not delusional, he know there's no way he can say with a straight face that he gets it.
What he does understand is that narrow-mindness, because he's like that too.
Just like the game itself says, both are using the same power, just one the negative energy of the emeralds and the other the positive
Two sides of the same coin
What's the difference between the two then? That Chaos has closed himself out from the world and let himself be consumed by pain, while Sonic has... His heart opened.
The entire Song is Sonic trying to appeal to Chaos to "Open his heart". Because he knows that trapping him back on the master emerald would only make it all worse, because such a free spirit like he knows that the worst thing you can do to another is removing that freedom to them, and because what got Chaos to be so corrupted is exactly being trapped- not only in a physical sense, but in a phycological way
He trapped himself. And while on the boss battle the only thing that happened was Sonic beating the shit out of him until he got it, the song tells another story
To make first point short: Open your heart itself makes parallels from the two and directly says they're in a way one in the same, both set on their ways, and Sonic gets Chaos to a point, and that's why he can't let him have his way, because he's trapped, and he needs to be set free from that hatred to be able to make a decision. And once he is, his decision is to stop the destruction leave peacefully
For a so claimed "God of destruction", destruction isn't his natural way if being, it got imposed to him; chaos is neither a good or a bad force of nature, it just is. And for a being literally named by it, he seemed to only embody the negative parts of it...
So where is the positive part of chaos?
On Sonic.
Sonic is Chaos. Sonic is the good of Chaos, the good that got banished from him the day the echidnas got too greedy with power
Ever thought how curious is that SA1 was the first game were Sonic has green eyes? Green as in the same color of Chaos' eyes? Green as in "they're both blue and green they have almost the same color palette"? Or green as in the color of the master emerald, mainly notorious for its connections to Chaos?
Also outside of the things Open your heart already implies, there's so more parrales between the two...
I mean, being of water vs guy infamous for not going well with water can't get more obvious than that
Sonic is, as a character, meant to be the representation of freedom, that's where the comparison to wind comes from... And what's more free than chaos? No direction, doing whenever you want as you wish, isn't that what Sonic is? He's notorious for never calling himself a hero, one of his more iconic phrases "what you see is what you get, just a guy who loves adventure"
Sonic is chaos (the concept) on the way that he's freedom, doing as he pleases, liberating, never changing his ways
Chaos (the character) is chaos (the concept) on the way that he's directionless, he's destructive, and never changing his ways
Sonic is Chaos (the character), because they represent the same concept on different ways
Sonic already has a villain to present the danger of order (Dr. Eggman, aka: mr control freak), so Chaos presents the dangers of chaos. "Do as you please" and "Keep your convictions straight" sounds good on paper until those convictions leeds you to hurt people and doing whenever you want leads you to causing pain and suffering.
Because thinking of it, Chaos had good intentions- he was protecting the chao from the echidna tribe that were hurting them for selfish reasons- he was protecting them, but after that? After that it was simply rage for the sake of rage- he flooded a city full of people that weren't even born when the incident happened and have nothing to do with it- people DIED, yet he wasn't changing his ways- his convictions never changed, and since he still thought the Chao were endangered he did what he did last time: protect
Those are, in paper, the same principles as Sonic on Sonic and the black night: do what you think is right, no matter if that will make some see you as the villain... Except what Chaos did is CLEARLY different and wrong
Because, as much as they're both selfish (selfish as in "most Decisions they make are purely based on what they want"), Sonic is coming from love and Chaos from hatred. On paper maybe Sonic could be seen as selfish (example: leaves station square as soon as Chaos is defeated because the rebuilding is no longer his problem) yet his heart is always on the right place. And maybe he just does whenever he wants, but what he wants is what's good for the people, so his selfishness turns him into a selfless being. Chaos is "doing whenever he wants" from a misguided place: he thinks he's doing what's the best for the Chao, just like Sonic does what's best for the people, when in reality the Chao don't even need him to do allat. Even if he's running by instinct, he's not achieving what he's trying to get, and his selfishness is just that- selfish, even if it came from a selfless core
Sonic's motto is basically to help the world only when it can no longer help itself, while Chaos "helps" it when the help is not only no longer needed, but actively just making it all difficult to the ones he's trying to protect, THAT'S were they differ
That's why, while both "selfish", one his presented as clearly right and the other clearly wrong. Because Sonic knows what he's doing, while Chaos is too blinded to see the truth. But once he gets some sense to him and sees that the chao are ok he does the exact same thing as Sonic: he simply leaves. Doesn't stay to try to fix what he did, because he knows that at this point the world can help itself, and he won't do the same mistake he did of trying to help at a point where is no longer needed
Sonic got him to open his heart (I'm so sorry for bringing it up so much I just love the song-)
Ok, so we got to how Sonic and Chaos are the same in a thematic way. Cool. That's nice
Now here's why Sonic and Chaos are literally the same person
Now this part I don't have as solid as an argument so take is as more lf a fun AU thing
Early jp classic Sonic was very much treated like a fairy-tale character. A mystical creature that would appear and disappeared when the adventure is over, and even in more modern games he's sort of like that (come on guys he's literally summoned from the sky in SatBk how more obvious can it get...?)
He's, in most game characterizations, a flat character. He doesn't grow because he doesn't NEED to grow. He seems to be inmune to corruption (Examples: In unleashed he's unaffected by dark gaia's influence outside of becoming more furry. On frontiers he smiles through the pain to the point Sage questions him what the hell he's doing) He's unable to be corrupted, as he's usually not the one to learn something from the story, rather the one delivering the lesson to another character (ak: Sonic 2 him indirectly giving confidence to Tails by just being there. Sonic and the secret rings he being what brought Sara our of her toxic relationship. The one SatBK monolog everyone already knows)
Sonic is a lot of things, a lot of them bad: impatient, a bit of a brat, annoying, but on top of everything he's pure. Sonic is incapable of evil. And thus him not changing his ways ever is GOOD
Chaos IS corruption, as in that's what defines the his character and character arc- because he's, unlike Sonic, NOT a flat character, in fact he's the one that receives the lesson by Sonic in Sa1
He's also treated as this mystical being, except that instead of being a fairly-tale it's a prophecy of a disaster. Chaos is not only capable of evil, but rather he IS evil itself for a good part of the story, and thus him not changing his ways is BAD, even if it goes under the same core premise as Sonic's motto of freedom- a decision made from blinded pain is not a decision made in your full freedom after all
That evil is not inherent to him; once again, it was imposed- forced onto him. And when he got purified... What is his role on the next time he happens to appear in the story, when he's given the freedom of actually choosing without being tied down by the chains of old wounds? To only make himself known when the master emerald is in danger (said in Sonic battle and the sonic forces comic prequel)
On other words, he only helps when the world can't help itself
He literally turned into Sonic the moment his heart was devoid of evil
Sonic was not only reaching out to Chaos, he was reaching out to himself- a part of him he never got to terms with, as "hate" is not something he's capable of, not in this form. He not only helped Chaos, but he also processed that hate- a hate that he never got to experience, but it's indirectly "his"
... Except it's not his and never was his
Because of course, realistically, IF this theory/headcanon was right, Sonic would see himself and Chaos as different beings. Because who cares of what was before? Yeah, what IF he came from the guy? He's no longer that person, and be will not get tied by boring concepts as the strings of the past
This is a kind of Solaris Mephiles-iblis situation, except while Mephiles is obsessed with being "one in the same" and "complete" again, Sonic will give the autonomy to Chaos to decide to be his own being. Sonic is Sonic and Chaos is Chaos, he will not do any attempt to go back to being "complete", because he already IS completely, and then he helped Chaos be complete to... Why change what's not broken?
Chaos is happy being a guardian of the master emerald and Sonic himself is happy just being some guy who loves adventure. To make them go back to what was before would be to force a sense of order on two beings of chaos, which is counterproductive. I'm sure none of the two would agree with it
If, as Open your heart says, the fundamental difference between Sonic and Chaos is one being trapped by hatred and the other devoid from it, and then the moment Chaos is set free from that feeling he takes an almost identical fairy-tale like creature role Sonic also has... Then what does that mean?
Perfect Chaos is a fake god because he's not truly "perfect", the resentment is what's keeping him from it, and the moment he lets go of it he truly reaches the perfect state of chaos... And basically turns to Sonic
Sonic is perfect chaos, as he's the good of it
Ever wondered where he comes from? Game Sonic never ever had an origin story, at best an "He comes from Christmas island, no we will not tell you or show you ever where or what Christmas Island is"
He doesn't seem to have parents or an origin story. As far as the world is concerned there's been this blue hedgehog wandering around and randomly helping people then disappearing to never be seen ever again. Ever since that Dr. Robotnik guy has been causing trouble the hedgehog has always been there to stop him, as if he came out of nowhere... As if he spawned thin air
And perhaps that's the easiest reasoning. Perhaps he DID come out of nowhere. Because you can't keep trapped chaos (the concept). It WILL find a way to get out, and it won't listen to you, and it's only agenda is to oppose order
And what happens when a destructive force comes and imposes order on the world? In a way Eggman created his worst enemy... Sa1 was not the first time he liberated Chaos
Because when the world needed him the most it brought back his ashes to life into a form devoid from the hatred and pain that caused his perish on the first place. Made the good that was vanished from his heart and the kindness forced out of him into a being of flesh and bone. And from his wounds of the past there'll be something beautiful for the present. The pureness that the echidnas took away from him so many years ago will be reborn
There'll be brought chaos
They'll ne brought freedom
There'll be Sonic, Sonic the hedgehog
#So just the kirby dark matter situation but I already got enough people on Twitter pointing that out lmao#I may have missed some point but it's 4 am give me a break#Idk if this actually makes sense as a theory but I am making it into an au:#The true chaos#Also half this post was just an excuse to glaze over open your heart tbh#maple the darkshine#sonic the hedgehog#sonic fandom#sonic headcanon#sonic theory#sonic character analysis#character analysis#Sonic adventure#Sonic adventure 1#chaos 0#sonic chaos#Sonic lore#open your heart#Crush 40#dr eggman#narrative parallels#rambling#sonic ramblings#sonic au#maple is rambling again…

Out of all the mysteries Hoshi No Kaabii has (or Kirby Right Back At Ya in the USA), there is one scene I often question. I asked myself WHAT HAPPENED BEFORE THE EVENTS OF MASHER 2.0!?!?
This is the scene I’m taking abt:
If you are unfamiliar with who Knuckle Joe is, I can summarize for you:
Knuckle Joe is a character from Kirby who is related to the legendary star warrior, Jecra (Ik it’s not his canon name, but it’s better than calling him Knuckle Joe’s Father). He starts off vengeful and becomes a monster because of his anger, but after he changed back into his regular self he learns from his mistakes and decides to become a monster hunter. This leads him to betray Nightmare Enterprises just to defeat the company’s strongest monster, Masher.
Here are some details I noticed during this scene:
1. The planet itself

Could this be the home planet where Knuckle Joe lives, or could it be a planet he was assigned to hunt monsters from (since he is a monster hunter)?
What was the planet like before it was invaded by monsters?
Did the planet have a different color palette before the invasion?
Headcanon notes: I believe that Planet Aurorion (name of the planet) used to be a peaceful and lively planet before the war happened. Because of how the war affected the planet, it turned from a beautiful bluish purple palette to a dreary lifeless blood orange palette.
For Knuckle Joe, life wasn’t easygoing compared to the cappies in dreamland, in fact it was the total opposite. Knuckle Joe and his mother had to fight monsters in order for them to survive. Some Jebloids (species for Knuckle Joe and Jecra) left Aurorion, others stayed and some even perished from the war.
I believe after the war (after the events of the movie) Knuckle Joe, and his GF, Sirica, both restored Aurorion and later it never had to suffer another monster ever again.
2. The scenery

If you look closely at the backgrounds you can see that most of the buildings are demolished. This shows a perfect example of how a war can impact a location. I wondered what ever happened to the people who lived in these areas and if they are alive or not. No one is screaming from terror and the only non-monster on screen is Joe himself. Could Joe be the only one of his kind left?
3. Knuckle Joe wearing his father’s medallion all of a sudden

In the last episode Knuckle Joe appeared in, he never wore his medallion, but for some reason in the beginning of this episode he is. Why is he wearing his father’s medallion now?
Did something happen to Joe’s family other than what happened to his father, Jecra?
Was the medallion the only thing Joe had left from the war? (Possibly losing his family, his home, everything he loved, yet was able to rescue the medallion?)
After the episode, did Joe have plans to move to another planet where there aren’t much monsters to battle?
4 (pt 1). Transporter systems!?!?
Monster Transporters are devices from the show where a monster from the eNeMeE Fortress can be transported to Dedede’s Kingdom. BUT WHY IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT THE FACT THAT JOE’S PLANET HAS THEM TOO?!!?
This explains how in the episode “Here Comes the Son” (the first episode Joe appeared in) Joe was able to enter the cyberspace without any problem.

4 (pt 2). A possible theory about Joe’s transporter systems

After this scene happened, Escargoon and Dedede discover that there is a memory chip that was inside of the medallion that Knuckle Joe was wearing. Jecra was the one who made the memory chip in the first place. Could it be possible that before the war, Jecra made the transporter systems too? The memory chip and the gem magnifier might hint about Jecra’s career not only as a strong star warrior, but an engineer as well. Maybe before the war Jecra wanted other Jebloids to explore different planets by transporting into these transporter systems. Maybe eNeMeE saw this and took advantage of that idea and turned them into monster transporter systems where monsters can invade the planet.
5. The Japanese title of the episode

While the English name of the episode tells us the name of the monster “Masher 2.0”, the Japanese title of the episode hints about Knuckle Joe’s story itself. The title might reflect on the fact that Knuckle Joe escaped Masher 2.0, but what if it was more than that? Maybe something like “Knuckle Joe Escaped his home planet” or “Knuckle Joe nearly lost everything he loved”.
Like wdym “Escaped”?
NINTENDO, TELL ME MORE ABOUT THIS CHARACTERS LIFE OUTSIDE OF DREAMLAND AND MY LIFE IS YOURS!!!!
Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments or reblogs, this will help a lot about Knuckle Joe’s outside life. ❤️

I can agree that Sectonia’s spider design could be a bit more unique, and even though I could defend the reveal I know it’s just kind of frustrating overall. But I think the characterization of Sectonia’s original form being a spider being contradictory to the design build up of Triple Deluxe is super wrong.
She likely built her army up after she became corrupted and changed her form, so that is when she - a character obsessed with appearances - would build an army of subjects that all reflect her. The fact that she used to look like Taranza and never like those subjects is a way to make visually distinct that contrast between her old and corrupted self. As well as represent that Taranza is the last vestige of her old self that she discarded when she saw him as no longer useful.
And to do apologia for the design being a bit derivative... It was made just to sell a point - that Sectonia was once like Taranza. That’s all it needed to do. Even if it was just Taranza’s model, it being the true form of the Sectonia clone would do its job. Triple Deluxe nor Roboot are about Sectonia’s past, her backstory is just interesting set-dressing for a fairytale about an evil queen and her bumbling servant. I don’t say that to be like, “its just a kid’s game, it’s not important”, but it is a simple platformer first, and a deeper world of tragedies and mysteries second, hence why backstories are often hidden in the background.
They’re for lore nerds like us, so that the average child playing isn’t saddled with too much narrative, and we can dig for clues and surprises. I think a lot of storytelling decisions in the series make more sense when you think of it like that.
last night i was reminded of one of my extremely few Hater Moments (lighthearted) about this series and i never got around to fully articulating my thoughts on it, so it is once again time for our regularly-scheduled kirby rant:
the spider sectonia reveal was poorly-executed on every level.
to start with, this plot element was introduced when the series was in its worst throes of Not Putting The Fucking Lore In The Fucking Games, but I will happily concede that this reveal was at least in a game; just not the game it should have been in.
I almost wonder if the Sectonia Clone as a whole was a leftover from the fact that Robobot started out development as Triple Deluxe 2, but considering that a) TD2 was dropped pretty early on and b) Robobot is just full to the brim with fanservice and callbacks anyway, I don't feel there's much evidence for such a theory.
at any rate, reducing the otherwise very intriguing reveal of Sectonia's prior form to a blink-and-you'll-miss-it easter egg in an entirely different game is pretty... underwhelming. we've had plenty of "reveals" or cool nods and expansions to other lorebits in similar easter eggs, but none of them were nearly as important as "oh, by the way, here's what the character whose whole arc revolves around personal and physical image used to look like! in a totally unrelated game!"
but that's the tamest complaint. that's just the accessibility of this information, which could have been better but certainly could have been worse.
the biggest problem is Sectonia's design. it's bad. it is just not good, fellas. she is literally just genderbent Taranza. it fails visually, it fails conceptually, and it fails really hard story-wise.
this design was so uninspired that when people in the EN sphere first saw it, tons of people thought it just was Taranza. then when we got screenshots, model rips, etc., it was still so painfully similar to Taranza that it made people assume HAL was saying Taranza and Sectonia were related - which turned into just as much of a shitfight as you might think.
even if this weren't attached to such a crucial character reveal, it's just downright a bad design! instead of taking even the slightest efforts to differentiate Sectonia from Taranza, they did the laziest, most barebones "uhhhhhh what if taranza But Girl" design shift possible. she's wearing the exact same outfit as Taranza, just palette-swapped. so little effort went into both the concepting stage and the modelling stage. she's just Taranza's model with the merest tweaks to make sure you know this is a Girl Spider.
genuinely, I would be a hundred times more amenable to this entire plot point if HAL had just bothered to give her an actual design.
but the problem is, making Sectonia a spider kind of just fucks everything about her story and contradicts itself at multiple points.
the aesthetic and theme language in TD is very clear. this is one of the biggest strengths that both it and Robobot share - the identity and literary through-lines of both games pervade every single visual element of them. Robobot tells its tale of capitalistic tech-fuelled colonialism through every part of the game from level backgrounds, to enemy designs, right down to surgical decisions like mechanising the pinwheel tree that was such a fond image from KRtD. every tiny thing bore the mark of the HWC, whether metaphorically or literally, such that you spent the entire game never forgetting that there was one unified force behind all of this, and Haltmann at the end of the game was the culmination of this aesthetic.
TD did the exact same. every part of TD sells that it's a fantastical fairytale romp through a series of themed locations with a connecting thread of the invading Antr* force.
*(this is a way better romanisation than "antler" this is my hill)
if anything, I'd argue that TD's design language in this respect is tighter than Robobot's, because Robobot had a fairly broad theme of "industrialisation and hi-tech space future sci-fi" to draw its foes from, whereas TD had to condense its antagonists under the stricter banner of "evil insect army".
and they did incredibly. every point of design about the Antrs points straight to Sectonia and draws from her in some way or another. it's absolutely seamless. she's the perfect logical endpoint of Antr design from every angle: she's the literal queen bee of this insect hive and the perfect expression of their anatomy. she's bigger than the biggest Antr. she's more developed. she's more powerful. they were so careful and thorough about this design conceit that Antrs have multiple stages that all march straight up to Sectonia. we go from the tiny bronto burt and waddle dee clones with their little wings and eyes that seem so familiar, to the Antr soldiers, all the way up to the Lord Antrs who are one step away from Sectonia. they have stripes and facial markings to echo hers. it's all wrapped up with the genius bow of combining ants, bees, and wasps: they're all hymenoptera! the metaphor goes even deeper than that because there's a species of wasp that parasitizes spiders! controls them, even!
... except no actually, we've decided she's a spider too and all of that buildup and artful design means nothing.
it's awful. it's taking what is far and away one of the best-executed designs in the series and saying that all of that buildup and blatant connection of ideas meant nothing.
but that's just the visual end of it. Sectonia actually being a spider makes no sense in the lore, either.
first of all, TD's incredible design sense and artistic direction applies to Taranza as well. while he's obviously derivative of Magolor, within the context of TD he's clearly meant to evoke the sky fairies. he's designed to look much more like them than any of the insect characters. he's got the same body type, he moves the same way as them, he's a sky fairy with a spider theme. the game draws visual parallels between him and the sky fairies more than once; this is not unintentional.
this is part of what makes Taranza's role as Sectonia's right hand more impactful: he's only insect adjacent, and the design language would have you believe he's more closely related to the fairies than the insects, so him being with the bad guys is notable and interesting.
so why would a spider character be the ruling monarch of the insect hive? why would the line go ant, bigger ant, fancy ant, armoured ant, spider, wasp?
I mean, shit dude, the miiverse posts directly tell us that Sectonia used to "look like her insect underlings". it really feels like the decision to make her be a spider was a total spur-of-the-moment one, between how badly it interacts with the rest of the story and how lazy the design was. Sectonia's backstory had a couple of holes in it regarding the actual timeline of things, but those were just mysteries regarding what order everything happened in. she was both a bodyjacker and a good queen at one point, which don't exactly jive, so it becomes interesting to think about how those two facts coexist. on the other hand, her being a spider just gets shoehorned in there for no apparent reason other than to... heighten her connection to Taranza?
and that just dovetails into the complete mockery HAL made of Taranza's character development after TD, and THAT is a rant for another time.
there was just no point to it all. Sectonia being a spider adds nothing, removes a bunch of nuance and intrigue, and muddies both her story and the background world of TD.

https://www.tumblr.com/victorianpuckbunny/787250510261567488/what-if-trevor-uses-his-playlist-to-send-secret?source=share
i really need a detailed examination of the playlist 😫😫😫
(This one is a good start but i need more though)
hi anon !! i would literally love nothing more than to deep dive into all of it on this fine saturday morning :)) firstly here is a link to the playlist itself just in case you (or someone else who happens across this) haven't had the pleasure of viewing and/or listening to it.
in terms of your ask, i'm not 100% clear on what you're looking for, so i'm going to start out with some general lore and lay the groundwork, and then i'll go on to explain/examine some of my personal favorite songs on the playlist.
the "rooftop" playlist was first created on September 25, 2022 and about half of the songs were added that day. the 25th is the only day that jamie added to the playlist (using his mom's spotify account - which is still endlessly hilarious to me tbh). this is not the first playlist trevor has made with the intent of collaborating with jamie to "curate a vibe" for their home or whatever haha. here is a screenshot that i took of the og apple music playlist that sometimes also gets talked about:
people have since recreated this original playlist on spotify for posterity's sake - here is a link i found to one of those as i am presently unable to find the OG as i have deleted apple music. the long and the short of it all is that the apple music playlist is FAR LESS SENTIMENTAL and to me reads more like a hype playlist; whereas, rooftop is more of a vibe, something that took effort and love to create, and something that trevor very pointedly wanted to share with jamie. trevor was strictly an apple music guy before he met jamie, and i think it speaks volumes that he would begin to use a whole new streaming service just to appease him, yet jamie won't even go through the effort of spending pennies on the dollar to make an account for himself. generally speaking, that alone feels like a reflection of my general characterization of the two of them as a duo.
to my knowledge the only song ever removed from the rooftop playlist is lover by tswift, and, i believe, it was removed shortly after trevor started dating dixie in 2022. i think it is important to note here that lover was one of only six songs that jamie ever added to the playlist. they were all added the same day and the other five are still there. additionally, jamie has a separate playlist (in his mother's spotify account) just called cali where, on September 25th, he added lover and it remains there to this day. it needs to be noted here that the bulk if not all of the songs on "cali" are songs that trevor likely introduced him to while living together because they are pretty much all on rooftop as well.
trevor has another playlist that was originally created by cole caufield that trevor is the sole music provider for (even though both cole and kirby dach are also able to access it) called cookie szn - i only mention this cause trevor generally has incredible music taste, and you should give it a listen.
one last thing that i need to be so clear about before i get into song analysis: this was a playlist made with the intent of listening to it - as two young hockey players living alone in california far from family - on a rooftop while the sun is setting.
okay now that i've spieled on this for far too long, here are some of my fav songs on the rooftop playlist and what i generally think of the vibes as a whole.
we start off strong with song number 4: sophia - clairo
this is a song about forbidden sapphic love. this is a song that is about "knowing what you want, but feeling scared to reach out for it. but if you tried, you could have it" (clairo on twt). most notable verse in my opinion:
then we move on to number 7: wildest dreams (tv) - tswift
now i know that this is unironically one of trevor's all time favorite songs, so it was always going to be here; however, while we have it here, we may as well analyze. this is yet another song about being secretive with a lover, wanting to escape attention, etc. however it's also about breaking up. most notable verse:
i think the craziest possible song to have on any playlist that you made with your close good friend is number 27: cleopatra - the lumineers (swiftly followed by number 28: sleep on the floor - the lumineers)
cleopatra is unironically one of my favorite songs. it's honestly gut-wrenching to listen to no matter how many times i've heard it. the following to me seems to very obviously be the most notable verse:
^i literally can't think about this for too long or else i'll get stomach sick, so here is all i'll say. this song to me speaks to a level of devotion often only seen in 13 year old dogs. it is a WILD thing to put on a bro-centered sunset watching playlist, and it is also hard to recover from psychically.
moving swiftly along. i am jumping ahead to song number 70: use somebody - kings of leon.
this is one of only 5 songs jamie added to (and kept on - rip lover) this playlist, and this is my personal favorite of these still existing 5.
of course this song is a classic at this point. kings of leon really popped off with this one. obviously the opening verse is one of the most iconic
this post is already so fucking long; however, i will leave you with something that i said to my friend the other day - song number 102: back to december - tswift was added on october 26, 2022 - a full year and a bit before jamie was initially traded, and even the knowledge that it was added so much earlier didn't stop me from bringing up the fact that Jamie was traded on January 8th - ANYWAYS !!!
here is an honorable mentions list that i am happy to expand on separately cause some of these are fucking insane:
67. losing my religion - R.E.M.
79. this must be the place - talking heads
81. you can't always get what you want - the rolling stones
89. we are going to be friends - the white stripes
96. i'm into something good - herman's hermits
99. wouldn't it be nice - the beach boys
107. sparks - coldplay
125. torn - natalie imbruglia
148. another love - tom odell
158. go your own way - fleetwood mac
numbers 96 and 99 are particularly interesting to me, but i've been sitting her for an hour now, so again sorry this post is actually so fucking long - i know you initially just wanted me to deep dive some songs, but i figured i'd give lore for those potentially unaware-, but i am more than happy to continue expanding on all of this, and there are obvs many songs i've left off this list that are equally insane. thanks for giving my an excuse to talk about all this, anon :))

a subgenre of infantilizing Kirby is saying he has no complex thoughts or emotions on the actual plots of there own adventures
"bad guy hurting friends i have to do something about it"
and while yeah there not going to have a long debate on the ethics of it, saying there just tone-deaf to everything going on limits character exploration
like his role in the sort of "tragedy" in Triple Deluxe
you could write him as none the wiser to the tragic fate that fell upon the beast
but what if he was aware!? Wouldn't that mess him up that he hates someone who, by all means, could have been a friend?
he plays the role of an executioner. but all means it is a part he doesn't want to play
According to Kumazaki, Kirby’s perspective from what we can see is understandably a bit limited because although he’s not exactly a player insert, his feelings are meant to reflect the ones the players might have toward the story. This alone speaks volumes.
anyway people will write paragraphs upon paragraphs of analysis on The Lore and at the same time be like “lol Kirby is too stupid and shallow to understand what’s going on” where is your imagination. BOMB

Kirby and the Amazing Mirror is a pretty interesting game especially for a mainline title
It contains some cool characters that originate from that game such as Big Waddle Dee, Moley, Dark Meta Knight and Capcom’s Nightmare -
What the fuck are you Dark Mind? I’m sick of it
There is two things that really intrigues me with this series, thing number one:
Fuck you Dark Mind!
(A small essay/analysis/theory(?) about a very mysterious villian in the Kirby series, under the cut!)
Okay, I think Dark Mind is the most Nothing Burger mainline Kirby villian ever, if not in the entire series
Almost nothing is known about him ingame besides “He is evil and wants to take over the Mirror World”
And yeah, he is referenced by Void Termina in one of their attacks which might mean something but like, almost every boss is so he is not special
I will argue that Nightmare and Dark Nebula (two similar final bosses with little to no info on them) are more talked about, the former because of the anime (without it, he won’t really be that popular me thinks) and the latter because ‘Lord of the Underworld’ title (despite being a localization thing) and his possible connection to the Sparkling Star among other reasons
Not saying nobody cares for him at all, he just have less attention then all of the other mainline villians because the lack of depth and info he has compare to the others
Now, a theory that I have seen thrown around is that Dark Mind is the Mirror World counterpart of either Nightmare or Zero. or even a combination of both counterparts, and yeah, I can see it especially since he have aspects of both of them
However
As shown in this official tweet by the Kirby Twitter account, it heavily implies that Magolor doesn’t have a mirror counterpart because nothing is shown while looking at the dimensional mirror

This tells me that not everyone has a Mirror World self and if Magolor doesn’t have one, I seriously doubt both Nightmare and Zero would have one as well
I still do think that Dark Mind is atleast somewhat connected to Dark Matter, even if it’s just the substance and not the actual species (if that makes sense)
His name brings the phrase “Mind over Matter” to mind (heh, mind) which means this:

So my epic game theory is that maybe he is like, a advanced version of Dark Matter that gained perception or something???? I think that would be cool
Or maybe he is just his own thing exclusive to the Mirror World, since some Mirror Worlders (like Dark Meta Knight) reflects the darkness their Popstar counterpart, maybe Dark Mind was formed by the leftover darkness from the hearts of many? That may be true but it is still very vague compare to other bosses lore
There is the possibility that he corrupted Queen Sectonia because of the whole mirror thing, it’s way more likely then DMK doing it, that’s for sure
Oh, let’s now talk about something that is also l related to Dark Mind, sorta!
This is King D-Mind from the Team Kirby Clash Deluxe, a king of darkness who is summoned through the Black Mirror by Dark Taranza but he proceeded to shatter the dumb spider
After clashing with Team Kirby, they managed to trap him back the mirror and shatter it, saving the Dream Kingdom
He also had a role in Super Kirby Clash but idgaf
In a interview about Kirby Clash, which can be found here:
I found some interesting stuff like with Taranza using the Black Mirror so much that the balance of worlds breaks and lots of Parallel versions are born alongside Taranza’s dark counterpart

And King D-Mind being born from Dark Taranza’s evil mind who he considers to be the most strongest and savage warrior

Let’s take a look at the Black Mirror itself actually, it bears a striking resemblance to Dark Mind himself, perhaps it was created with him in mind or his origin place because remember, even before Dark Taranza summoned him, King D-Mind was manipulating regular Taranza through this mirror to summon rampaging monsters
Of course, the Kirby Clash games take place in a alternate universe but I always saw the Mirror World as can be visited/connected to all these universes as long if they have a variant of the Dimensional Mirror
Oh, and also it’s probably not important but his internal file name is “MaskedBlackDedede” Black Dedede being Shadow Dedede name In Japanese, but there is not enough evidence (if at all) to suggest Shadow Dedede and D-Mind are the same
In fact, this might not even BE the same Dark Mind from the Amazing Mirror
So like, can multiple D-Minds exist as long as if people has evil minds? What’s up with the skull mask and flaming eyeballs? Did Dark Taranza considered both Shadow Dedede and Dark Mind as extremely savage it created King D-Mind?
Who knows?
So in conclusion, idk, maybe Dark Mind isn’t meant to be that deep,he was just a villian that needed to be overcomed and that’s it
Either way,I enjoyed rambling about him, let me know if you I want to see more of these kinds of post from me and feel free to tell me what are your interpretations of Dark Mind!

I was talking with one of my friends from school about Kirby lore {as one does} and we came up with some pretty solid theories so I'm going to spew them at you all now
THORY 1: Adeline is from the Forgotten Land {or at least has ancestors there}
This one's pretty simple. The Forgotten Land is very clearly meant to mirror a post-apocalyptic human society and Adeline is just a straight up human.
THORY 2: Nightmare Wizard is negatively charged dream matter. Do I even need to explain this one.
THORY 3: Morpho Knight is a grim reaper that kills/absorbs people that become so powerful that they become a threat to the universe to keep the balance.
This one is a two-parter. Fancy. First off, I got the grim reaper part from his Japanese bio in Star Allies. To quote my friend's analysis on it, since he's better at wording things than I am; {message 1 from him} "Also I found the more accurate translation of the Japanese version of Morpho Knight’s bio
'On the day of judgment when something dies, a butterfly of Sukhavati flies in from parts unknown. Sympathizing with endless cries for life from the white knight said to be the greatest in the galaxy, it turns into a knight of Yomi and descends. A dream battle with a being that was never meant to be fought, buried in the darkness of history... will now begin!'" {message 2 from him} "Yeah! Apparently, both Yomi and Sukhavati have to do with the afterlife.
The latter is the 'Realm of Ultimate Bliss' in Mahayana Buddhism, and is that sects version of the pure land. Basically, Mahayana Buddhist heaven.
Yomi, on the other hand, is the Japanese underworld from Shinto belief. It is not a place one would want to go since it’s basically a land of gloomy depression, but it’s also explicitly not a hellish place, since it’s not meant to be a punishment for past deeds. It’s just an afterlife where souls carry on sad, shadowy existences. It’s basically supposed to mirror the notion of the grave.'"
Based on this information, I've made my own theory.
"I have my own theory{headcanon?} about Morpho Knight.
I imagine he's a regular grim reaper for the most part, but if an individual becomes too powerful and becomes a threat he will take matters into his own hands.
I also think he has tried to absorb Kirby multiple times because he's become too powerful, failing every time, so he resorts to absorbing Fecto Forgo and killing him to old fashioned way. Which he also fails."
To elaborate further on the whole "Kills people who are too powerful" thing, in the few{?} times he's appeared, he's only targeted beings who are previously stated to have batshit insane levels of power, like Galacta Knight, Fecto Forgo, and apparently Kirby SEVERAL times. Only reason he hasn't gone after things like Dark Matter and Zero is because, by the time they became a universal threat, Kirby had gotten to them before Morpho Knight could, meaning they were already being taken care of.
THORY 4: Morho Knight works under Necrodeus.
This was a half-joke thory based on how Necrodeus is stated to be the "God of the Dead" {whatever the hell that means in this context} and that Morpho Knight is essentially the grim reaper.

I keep talking about making my own hours-long Bionicle lore video, but let's be real.
I should make an hours-long Kirby lore video filled with my speculative analysis of the way the world works and also my currently theorized timeline. Every other lore video doesn't get it and I Need to Go Big without simply regurgitating known details

The People Have Spoken.
But don’t worry, I can do a DTIYS for the next milestone, if I reach 100 followers!
But for now, here is the event:
Submit theories, head canons, or guesses you have about the characters or lore shown thus far about the Wolfbell AU.
Rules:
-You can submit as many as you want. There is no limit to how many entries you can submit, your only cap is your own imagination. You have my permission to explode my inbox. Is there a limit to the inbox? I would like to test this theory. Please specify if your submissions into my inbox are asks for the Kirby Oc Tourney or for the 50 Followers Event I am an easily confused creature. Alternatively, you can make an actual post with your submission, but be sure to tag me so I can see it and specify that it’s for the event in the post.
-They do not have to be about Wolfbell (the character) specifically! Feel free to take a stab at some of the other characters within the universe or simply the lore and story itself. As long as it’s relevant to the overall AU, it counts.
-These theories/head canons can be as simple or as complex as you want them to be. Fully and completely encourage walls of dialogue and text and in depth analysis. ‘Haha I think character likes *x* or *y*’ and that’s the theory is just as valid. Just know, I’m a sucker for a good long lore dump and it is my weakness.
-Submissions can be serious or silly, it’s both serious but I also want to hear your unhinged hot takes.
-Please keep it fairly SFW. That being said as the Wolfbell AU is more on the NSFW side covering darker themes, I will allow such, within reason. If you’re uncertain feel free to ask me.
-If you submit entries in my ask box you need to not be an anon because I can’t declare you the winner if I don’t know who you are.
-Feel free to include little doodles and illustrations for your submissions, however this is not required! You can also include your own ocs interacting with mine or interacting in some way to make it more fun.
-If two people submit the same exact ‘correct answer’, I will go with the one I feel best explained or conveyed the theory and or head canon. Again, I’m personally biased for blocks of text.
-While there are multiple ways to win, you cannot ‘win twice’, if you submit more than one ‘correct answer’ and make it to the top three you’ll still only win once and two other people will still be other winners. The ‘winning answer’ will simply be the one I liked most and any additional ‘correct answers’ will simply earn you bonus doodles. In the total there’s gonna be six winners, three ‘most correct answers’ and three ‘most incorrect answers’, along with several little bonus winners where I was amused and entertained.
-If you submit an answer and it’s spot on and you crack the lore, obviously for spoiler purposes the submission will be handled differently. But there will be bonus ducks.
What will happen:
Gonna let this contest go on for a week! By the end of the week, I will go through all of the submissions and I will slap them all on a ‘iceberg’, with the most unhinged and non canon answers in the void and the closest to canon answers on the surface!
The top three at the tip top of the iceberg and the bottom most three will get a prize! A full body coloured render of their Kirby oc (or if you don’t have a Kirby oc/don’t want it to be a Kirby oc we can discuss that but yeah, prizes!) if you ‘win more than once’ by submitting multiple ‘correct answers’ you’ll simply get funny little bonus sketches of your characters.
Any questions or concerns, please DM me here on tumblr or on my discord.
Event will end at midnight Pacific Time on Sunday June 23rd.

Had to post this late because below is like a whole indepth analysis of this drawing + Perrin's history
Happy Birthday Perrin!!! It's really been 10 whole years... it's honestly astounding to even say this. Lil bro's so old...
Ok! if you clicked the keep reading button, expect to be here for a while, for i will be walking you through every single design and aus in this drawing and the history behind it!!
Perrin, or his old name, Peater, is a silly, bastardly little boy that has the magical powers to make people's dreams into reality. But that's just his canon lore. He also used to be a winged swordsman, a kirby with a repeater hat, and a little alien that escaped a lab. In different universes, he's a phantom thief, a god, a demon, or just a simple schoolboy!
Essentially, I use him for almost any story ideas that i find cool. He's one of the first ocs that I made and he gets involved in almost anything due to him being the favorite oc. His personality, still, has been very consistent, but you should just read his Toyhouse page if you wanna learn more because I don't want this to get any longer than it already is rn
Ok! Let's get started on the first design!!
~ Kirby Era ~
Before Perrin was a human, he was a puffball!
I used to be a huge PvZ and Kirby fan (still is) and so Perrin was born as a combination of both of those things. The general gist is that its a Kirby with a Peashooter hat. Simple enough.
The left design however, was I think another concept for Perrin that I had earlier or around the same time as Kirbypeater (this is the name for the Kirby version of Perrin) So I also considered that design a Perrin design as well. Also it's just super fucking funny because of how much it stands out. It straight up looks like a Mary Sue.
These two designs have absolutely zero lore, most of their lore will be coming with the next designs!!
2015 was honestly peak Kirbypeater era in terms of development. I drew him a LOT and gave him some personality and powers.
There were also a lot of design variations aside from these four (ignore the human one for now) most of them comes down to his bandanna color, his shoes, and whether he's wearing the repeater hat or not.
I was also a big Strikeforce Squad fan during that time so I reaally reaaally wanted him to be part of the lore and be a member lmao
You can notice that I changed the Peashooter to Repeater, which is my favorite plant in pvz. Around the end I changed it to Primal Peashooter, but that change was something I ended up not approving of in the future.
The katana is inspired by Zoro from One Piece, which is my fav OP character. His swordsman skill came extremely early on. The green hair guy (the one that got hit by the pea) is just mid 2015 Kirbypeater without the hat. Sometimes he has black hair however, which hairstyle was based off of Len Kagamine/Glutamine (the utaite)
~ 2016 - 2017 ~ The Blue Bitch Era
Sadly, the Kirbypeater era has now come to an end, because shortly after 2015, I decided to transition from drawing little funny kirby creatures to little funny boys.
Okay, let's go back to the guy riding the roadroller, because that was Perrin's first human design !!
The roadroller was a reference to this vocaloid song, if you didn't know already.
The first human design takes the black hair design from Kirbypeater, and the sweater was clearly inspired from my Undertale obsession back then 😔 little did he know that sweater was gonna stay for so damn long...
The part that did not stay long however were the green eyes and the black hair, that drawing was mostly a proof of concept only and didn't really reflect on what he'd become later.
ngl, this drawing is pretty damn good for a first time. I think i really didn't want to screw up back then.
THEN OUT OF NOWHERE?? HIS SWEATER THEN TURNED BLUE!!
I call this little era the blue bitch era because the sweater he wore turned blue for no damn reason, like no, you're suppose to be green, not blue... the disappointment i hold is immense right now.
Other than the blue, his iconic green hair first appeared during this time!! I also changed his eyes to brown, maybe as a way to make his design more grounded to real life? at least i think thats what little me was going at.
The second picture is the first AU i made for Perrin, based off of my playthrough of Pokemon Crystal where I named my pokemon after my Sony Sketch friends (hence Pokesketch.) Perrin would be the trainer and yeah.
I have no fucking idea what I was cooking for the third reference sheet, I think i wanted to imitate the ref sheet style a friend had and ended up making something INSANELY cringe. the undertale fan stink radiates off of that drawing and you guys are free to make fun of it as much as you want.
alright!! now its this fucker!!
this design was made as a sort of inside joke between my friends one day, where all of us just decided to have the same profile pic and name as this one other friend. the pfp (center) was of their ink sans oc and it was fucking funny as hell
it lasted like one day but i think that design is too good to not include in the art piece. you can see him fighting the chara perrin guy as a little nod to their similar inspirations #iloveundertale
~ 2018 - 2019 ~ Ninja Perrin makes an appearance ! Also these weird guys are here for some reason.
This era is kinda weird because there's nothing really stands out in terms of changes. But that's ok! Life isn't always just bumps and... idk where i was going with that uh anyways NINJA PERRIN
his swordsman ass is back again and now as a funny ninja guy!! honestly i cant recall lore wise why he was a ninja but i think it mightve been based off of naruto (i dont even watch naruto) also wow look guys his sweater finally stopped being blue! and now he has shorts!!!
also scratch that entire part about me saying there wasnt any significant changes because there was a time where i almost made perrin's hair NOT GREEN. that's right. absolutely BLASPHEMOUS. i shouldve been pelted with rocks for even considering such things.
but being real, i think a part of me back then felt? insecure about the fact that perrin's hair was an unnatural color for a while? green especially was not a common color to use back then so i felt like people didn't like him for that reason so i changed it to brown for a while to see if i liked it. uh spoiler alert i didnt and i changed it a month later i believe.
dude wait until 2019 peater sees gon from hxh
also you might be wondering why i only drew mid 2019 perrin wearing the ninja outfit and not early 2018. that is because that one drawing of ninja perrin from 2019 got meme'd to fucking DEATH by my friend because it had a funny face. i was forever scarred and so i decided to draw it as a funny reminder of that time.
oh yeah christmas tree peater. yeah bro.
moving on, here's the collection of weird perrins from this time.
the first is art i drew for art fight 2019, where I drew perrin with outfit themed with the team i joined which was team dream. i fucking lost horrendously that year. if i had a team i regretted joining it was team dream
next is!!! these four fucks!!!
these little guys are what was supposed to be representing peater's main personality traits, i made designs for them then that was it i did nothing with them. they were kinda dumb anyway
hopefully one of you guys know that thomas sander series with the four personality traits because that was what inspired these :smill:
and yknow what? I should probably cover all of the christmas perrins all in a row because getting rid of all of them rn would better fit the writing flow better-
oh. there's a picture limit. god fucking damn!!! see you later then!!!

Alright laddies, I've let the Star-Crossed World announcement settle in my mind for some half a month now and I finally have opinions worth actually sharing on it! It started as me just gathering info and trying to come to a conclusion, but it was hard to ignore the 10,000lbs greatest warrior in the room in the speculation sphere and it ended up evolving into a broader meditation on what to look forwards to in Kirby lore. It let me get out a lot of things I'd been thinking about lately, and I like da essay.
You can read it on my Kirby webbed site!

is the monster curse on kjoe like a long standing consequence of him turning into a demon beast, or more of a 'happened out of nowhere' situation?
asking since its a pretty cool concept and design <3
I believe that before the events of “Here Comes the Son”, Knuckle Joe wasn’t a monster at all. Interestingly, during the war against the monsters Joe’s baby picture has never been shown until his father was cursed by eNeMeE.
I believe because of eNeMeE’s magic, the photo turned from a white innocent color to a monstrous purple color during this scene:

Before Jecra’s curse:
After Jecra’s curse:

This would be such a good foreshadow to not only Jecra’s transformation, but Joe’s as well. When Joe hears about his father’s death years later, he is filled with fury and wants to get revenge. Knuckle Joe finds his local transporter system (connecting to a lore dump I made awhile back (heavily recommended reading)) and hops on to find the warrior who killed his father. While flying around the Cyberspace, he encounters the NME sales guy. Joe tells him where he is going, while the sales guy gives him “LUCK” (or “POWER” for the Jp version) and transports him to Dreamland. I believe that the “LUCK” was actually a curse he led on to Joe, similar to how Bonkers transformed into a monster in “Goin Bonkers”.
This is when I believe the curse actually started:
I also created his chart explaining monster transformation:

One line that stood out to me is a line that Meta Knight says when Joe has transformed (probably one of the only 4KIDS lines I like better than the jp version)
• “Kirby is a mirror! The form he has copied is your own form! Stop before it is too late!” -Meta Knight (episode “Here Comes the Son”)
I wonder if there is a time limit to when a non-monster permanently turns into a monster or at least gets brainwashed to become one. LIKE WHAT DO YOU MEAN “TOO LATE”!!?!?! That scene alone makes Knuckle Joe’s character well written because he is starting to become aware of the consequences of his fury and he is given a chance to redeem himself. Knuckle Joe probably struggled with his life without a father before the events of “Here comes the Son”. His unhealthy coping mechanisms led him to transform into a monster(if you want to read more about that I recommend checking out my character analysis rant on Knuckle Joe). One thing I really hope a future Kirby anime includes is the aftermath of Joe’s transformation and how it led him to become a Monster Hunter.
Here’s my hcs about the aftermath:

He promised to Kirby and his friends that he would love to battle on the same side someday, didn’t he? So he should do something!
This is more like a rough draft (might be subject of change) of a scene that takes place before the finale where Joe and Sirica become apprentices to Arthur and the rest of the GSA:

I want to work on a comic, but I still need to write each of the characters, their backgrounds, their dynamics, etc…
I feel like Nonsurat was once a monster before he joined the GSA, but I haven’t thought of anything major for his character yet.
Even though Joe isn’t a monster anymore, he feels horrified of himself because of what he has done. Thankfully there are people like Kirby, Sirica and the GSA who care about him and want to be there for him. At the end he became a rouge destroya pilot to stop eNeMeE and save the universe. Imagine what krbay would be like if Joe didn’t redeem himself and the Halberd was in great doom because there were only 2 rouge pilots and not 3.
I definitely had fun answering this question about my favorite character from Kirby, and if there is another thing you want to ask about krbay feel free to do so 👍

What do you consider THE most obscure, the most NICHE thing to ever create or even think about within fan-creativity field? Not necessarily this fandom, just any fandom you've been at!
For me it was making a 'mirror' version of Kirby character Necrodeus; he is very overlooked character not even just because his game is overlooked, he JUST doesn't exist in the fandom at all, and 'mirror' versions craze was a niche fandom trend only like 3 people truly committed to including me fdjsfjs
Euhhhhh... Hm..... that's a very good questions!
Like there's a lot of things really hardcore fans or more casual ones like to go look for (wiki stuff, translations, data mining etc) but only a couple of people actually do or can do it! So it's half niche I guess? Like very obscure lore analysis and looking for details/essay we do too. Or perhaps trying to found real life refs and compared is obscure too. (dunno if huge world building & timeline count too)
But I mean if you ask ME what I did? hm idk obscure khux meme probably XD and crazy ass discussions & theory with friends about kingdom hearts lore lol. (or obscure lore essay like the shit about the fishing hamlet I found & potential children bones in bloodborne? wtf)
But I mean you are the one creating the most obscure yet cool thing like a references for ALL CHARACTERS AND NPCS YOU MADMAN! XD (you can be proud lol)

The development of my au Marx
I watched some character analysis type videos and felt the urge to do a deep dive on my au Marx's development and stuff. Many many words under cut.
My previous major hyperfixations were the protagonists and worlds of two of my favorite ps2 games Spyro, and Scaler. (There was also Pokemon and Digimon but I didn't have a central character I latched onto with these.) More with Scaler than Spyro, I tinkered with the character some to make what I guess would be an au but I didn't know that was a thing yet.
It was the summer before I think either my second or third year of high school; I'd be around 15 or 16, when my siblings discovered there was a Kirby anime and decided to watch it. Then I obtained a hyperfixation on Kirby. (Even before this, I enjoyed Kirby games.) Rather quickly, this shifted over to Marx. Originally he was round like a regular Kirby character; then over time made changes: removed shoes because I dislike wearing shoes, gave him claws on feet and then arms with claws (unaware of manga Marx.), made the bow tie just for special occasions, randomly thought to myself what if I made Kirby characters not round; resulting in an anxiety attack and then major redesigns. Marx's not round redesign was in development hell for a long while, maybe even more than a year; it was a miserable time as I took my major perfectionism plunge into realistic anatomy and physiology. His body was gradually stretched out and head shrunk until I have my current design which I really like so it was worth it in the end.
Not sure why I decided that he used to be one of Kirby's species altered by Nightmare's underlings. It did add some tasty angst as I was an edgy ish teen getting into grimdark. And my decision to make him a regenerative immortal was partly based on 'how the heck could he have possibly survived Nova otherwise' and I guess partly something to do my interest in whump starting as a strangely(?) young age. He can go on all these dumb reckless adventures and reap the consequences of his actions, sometimes involving military involvement. There's also this conflict between his nature; influences, and wanting to belong; not be shunned and feared as a monster.
I'm with the group that believes that Marx had his powers before Nova. (Nova just temporarily increased his power level.) The game called his winged form his 'true form' like this was something he already had. Also how else could he have gotten to space?
I later added Magolor so he could have a permanent found family. He was more of a more serious foil until I started being on Tumblr and got influenced by others Magolors and realized how his character actually was. (How did I miss that??) Decided to have Magolor be immortal too, if he tends to join Marx on his misadventures sometimes he'd need it. Later realized this immortality kinda fits in with canon lore more than I thought, as Magolor and Marx seem to be the only antagonists who seemed to meet their ends in their original games yet come back later (there's also dark meta knight but he's not the hyperfixation).
I enjoy daydreaming with my Marx. Putting him in situations. When I watch shows I like I imagine him in there. So he gained the ability to travel to other universes. He just travels and goes on adventures. He wants to use his powers for good. To be liked. To belong somewhere. He doesn't really seem to have an end goal. Its just off to the next adventure. He's kind of purpose less, but I guess that's the point. He's searching for a purpose. He has no idea who or what he is. Magolor has a purpose. He's charting stars on the Lor; searching for his home world and to save his family and right wrongs. Maybe become a benevolent ruler to guide his species out of conflict and into peace and unity. Make sure no one else has to go through what he did when he still lived there.
My Marx is also a power fantasy thing to me. Not just the super powers. Parts of him feel like over corrections for my mental/sensory issues. I have a limited list of things I can eat, partly due to my sensitive stomach causing me pain from things, some processed stuff especially processed sugary baked goods (even just a small piece with some things) that the majority of people have no problem with. If I eat a non organic banana I feel Off. (My mom actually agrees she does too????) I can't eat oranges due to the pesticide nonsense or whatever they put on it - makes stomach hurt. (Glad to have a garden so I can at least have vegetables and strawberries some.) City water makes my stomach hurt. Lactose intolerant (why does dairy make my ears and throat itchy too????). I have contamination ocd and any thought about bugs/etc potentially being in my food makes me nauseous. My Marx can eat whatever the heck he wants, including things in the garbage and plenty of bugs. Blood and guts and old carrion? Absolutely! Drinks puddle water and is fine! No stomach aches from the biggest bunch of sugary processed mess! More sugar actually makes him more powerful! Nothing is safe! He can be filthy and sleep on the ground - he doesn't care! You adventure all the time you need to get used to a low standard of living, after all. Often what he considers a bath is just playing in a lake or river for a while. I have hyper empathy, making me distressed about fictional animals (mostly birds), and broken things, and fictional broken things, and objects in general sometimes. Marx can be all destruction and violence and hunting things in the woods to eat.
Although we share having anxiety and depression.
I like to try to enjoy my dreams, and I often end up playing as my Marx as soon as I realize I'm dreaming. Its fun to fly fast.

i’ll write a proper analysis about it one of these days but even after five years i am still kind of gobsmacked by just how much about hyness as a character is downright in bad taste, insensitive, or straight-up cruel stereotype. he genuinely mystifies me because like, the basic concept for this character is one that fits in seamlessly with the tone of the series overall: dark matter cultist who was ostracised for these beliefs and is now going on a roaring rampage of revenge about it. this is a pretty cut-and-dry parallel to the original “motivations” of dark matter (inasmuch as shimomura ever gave them any) - “i don’t have friends, so no-one can have friends”.
but the execution, holy shit. it’s bad. it’s really bad. it’s bad from so many angles - cultural, religious, health. we’ve had characters in the series before who were “poorly written”, which usually just means “meh, there isn’t really that much to work with for this character”, and the series is no stranger to edginess - see dark matter, which inspired hyness as a character in the first place - but hyness is just a bridge too far. his presentation and design almost feels malicious at some points.
this kind of feels like it springs from a thing i’ve mentioned a few times before, which is that kumazaki really needs someone standing by his side ready to slap his wrist every so often during the writing process. he is without doubt the best director the series has seen, and thanks to him we’ve gotten some amazing games with amazing stories and lore developments, but star allies demonstrated to us that he also kind of goes mad with power sometimes and creates a mess LOL
this isn’t even me being uncharitable or anything, it’s straight from the horse’s mouth. there are interviews about FL talking about how the team made the conscious decision to tell a much simpler story with FL after seeing how much confusion SA caused (and also, because of the same, choosing to have a much more stringent localisation process).
unfortunately, it feels like sometimes kumazaki - or any of the other writers, i’m only pointing out kumazaki so much here because it seems to be mostly him - wants to include some topics and themes that are just a bit of a stretch for what’s appropriate in a kirby game, and hyness is the chief example of this.
and it sucks! it sucks a lot! more dark matter rep and SPECIFICALLY a dark matter cult is something the fanbase has been slavering for for decades! i love hyness and what he represents in the story but BOY HOWDY DO I NOT LOVE HOW HE WAS DELIVERED.
#kirby#also man do people know that hyness is canonically a dark matter cultist? i feel like that's not as common knowledge as i think it is#the english version did questionable things to his rant which is of course where 90% of his lore is#idk it's been so long since star allies and it still causes everyone a headache#there are a couple other writing choices that i think aren't TOTALLY in line with The General Kirby Tone from kuma but they're nowhere near#as egregious as hyness
