we're back with my semi-coherent thoughts about arcane, this time it's about act 2:
the fuck you mean vander and silco were friends with vi and jinx's mom????
on a similar note: why is young silco so FI- ahem lemme chill
cait distracting herself from vi and her feelings by sleeping with MADDIE was NOT on my arcane act 2 bingo card
TO ME, isha's autistic (also i feel like i was the only person that thought it was pronounced i-sha...not ee-sha...)
^on the topic of isha, WHY IS SHE DEAD??? WHY DO THEY HATE ME?? SHE'S LITERALLY MY DAUGHTER
healed salo was giving so much more gender than normal and he got killed for it- gay on gay crime i swear
the amount of times jinx made me legit cackle was way too much
i actually screamed when warwick went "powder?" so do with that what you will
vi looked SO GOOD omg
i thought kino's voice sounded familiar so i just looked it up and IT'S HORDAK !!! gasp ! hey king !! long time no see !!
before mel did her glowy-glowy shit i went "bro mel can't die, she's a bad bitch" so...do with that what you will, part 2
warwick also went "don't touch my daughter" and i screamed yet again and that's on lowkey having daddy issues (i'm joking but i'm not)
jayce, you better explain yourself THE MOMENT act 3 starts cause what the fuck is your problem???
emilie agreste walked so singed's daughter could run (i mean she's not but you get the joke)
i'm also kinda loving sevika's hair...

If I see one more person comparing Yoda's "do or do not, there is no try" to Nemik's "try" I'm gonna eat my hair.
Yoda's phrases is generally one of the most misunderstood parts of the OG trilogy and I find that incredible because the text says it all (if you watch the scene in its entirety he even explains it). It's about not going in a situation with a defeatist mindset. Especially when the space wizard's doubt can be weaponized against himself. It's not about the result it's about doing the thing.
Which is pretty much what Nemik is saying but in a different context. It's about the fact that what you're doing might not have an immediate and/or big effect. It's about how you might never even get to know what the effect is. It's about the fact that there are others like you which means these will be added to each other and impact the situation even if the pay off is long down the road. It's worth doing sometging
They're two sides of the same coin.

I love so much that the prison break on Narkina 5 isn't a deeply complex escape plan designed by a small group of highly-skilled individuals to get themselves out, but rather an intelligent, mostly low-tech plan to upset the whole apple cart and give everyone a chance to get out. I love that Cassian and his allies come up with the main pillars of it through careful observation, knowledge, and collaboration. I love that it's set into motion by unexpected variables--the imminent arrival of a new man on the floor, made more urgent by the reveal of what happened on level 2 and why. I love that they bring the whole of Room 5-2D into the plan and everyone takes part, including the new man who just got fried recently, is probably terrified, and isn't prepared for any of this. I love that they send guys to other rooms and up and down the stairs, confronting the guards and encouraging the other inmates to take up arms. I love that Kino's speech calls for them to help one another, and I love that, while the 5-2D guys are able to offer freedom to the rest of the prison, the other inmates still need to be the ones to take it.

Beginner Manga Recommendations for Japanese Learners
It's time, you've done your due diligence in studying. Now it's time to jump into native material. But where to start? Here are a few manga series that I've read that I think would be a reasonable place for a Japanese learner to start their immersion journey.
Disclaimer: I haven't read every series, and the manga that's interesting to me might not be interesting to you. We also all encounter different words as we go along our language learning journeys. A series that I find relatively easy might have you looking up every other word. The trick is to not get discouraged and just keep on pushing through! As with everything, it gets easier the more you practice.
消えた初恋 - アルコ&ひねくれ渡: This BL series follows a group of four friends and their experiences with love in high school (it also has a drama adaptation that I highly recommend! Available to watch for free on Viki). This series is so silly and just a fun time. The art has great visual gags and it's definitely a series where you can sit down and not even realize that suddenly you've gone through an entire volume and why didn't you buy more of this series to start with? It has furigana on everything, but the characters do speak pretty casually, so there's some slang and less standard language. This series is completed with nine volumes.
佐々木と宮野 - 春園ショウ: This is another sweet BL about Miyano, a high school first year, who catches the eye of an upperclassman, Sasaki. After asking to borrow Miyano's book, the two bond over a shared enjoyment of BL manga. The vocabulary is pretty simple in this one as well, but it does use quite a bit of otaku slang, which can be difficult if you've never encountered it before. It has furigana on everything, though! This series is ongoing with nine volumes and also has a spin off series titled 平野と鍵浦 which is also ongoing with four volumes.
月刊少女野崎くん - 椿いづみ: The first manga I ever read in Japanese! This series follows a high schooler, Sakura, as she confesses to her crush and classmate, Nozaki. However, Nozaki thinks that Sakura is just a fan of his shoujo manga series, and recruits her to be his assistant. This series is so enjoyably silly with a wonderful cast of characters that absolutely steal the show. There's a bit of vocabulary specific to the process of making manga, but it isn't too overwhelming. There's also plenty of casual speech and some great moments that can't quite come out in translation (bonus fact: I actually wrote a paper on this series and how humor is translated in one of my university linguistics class). It also has furigana on everything. It's ongoing with fifteen volumes.
加瀬さんシリーズ - 高嶋ひろみ: This adorable little GL series follows two high school aged girls, popular and athletic Kase and the shy gardener Yamada, as their relationship develops over their high school years. The vocabulary in this one is relatively simple with the exception of some more specific words, but those tend to pop up time and time again. This one doesn't have furigana but I think it's a great introduction to readying manga without furigana! This series is completed with five volumes, but there's an ongoing sequel series called 山田と加瀬さん that currently has three volumes released.
ささやくように恋を唄う - 竹嶋えく: This is a music based GL series about a high school first year, Kino, who tells an upperclassman, Nagi, that she loves her music. Nagi, however, misunderstands this as Kino confessing her love for her. The story follows both the relationship between Kino and Nagi as well as the trials and tribulations of Nagi's band. This is another one without furigana, but the vocabulary tends to be simple enough that I think it's still pretty accessible. It's ongoing with eight current volumes.
かけた月とドーナッツ - 雨水汐: Our last GL, this follows two coworkers, Uno and Satou, and their blossoming relationship in a society that pushes conformity and marriage on women. I really loved the way this series depicted coming into one's sexuality as an adult. Another one without furigana, but simple vocabulary regardless. A possible difficulty with this one might be the office vocabulary, though. This series is completed with four volumes.

I just traveled for 10 hours so this is going to be incoherent but Mel & Viktor showing how the Arcane and their circumstance strip them of autonomy. At first watch I thought Mel being touched by the Arcane and being protected by it in comparison to Viktor who is corrupted by it was some kind of, idk, message about how Viktor & Jayce were wrong to mess with things they shouldn't & it only works if you're chosen.
But Mel's life sucks because of the Arcane too. The Black Rose & I think to an extent even Ambessa saw these powers as a gift- making it something to be used and exploited and at the end of the day both of them got their way. Mel avoided conflict and violence like the plague, she's not a fighter, she doesn't want to be one.. She's never had issues being the fox. It's a difficult route to take but one she eventually found success in nonetheless.
She first gets it because she's protecting people- protecting Jayce. Her first instinct is always to use it as a defensive tool rather than to engage in combat that's going to hurt. But the Black Rose force her into unlocking it through violence/ offensive attacks to hurt others. She's constantly pushed to use her powers in ways she absolutely does not want to.
Elora, Kino, Jayce- their faces being used to push her boundaries and make her into the thing she doesn't want and yet she somehow tries to cling to being a defender, a protector. Like they push her by making her choke out Le Blance when they're transforming between people she loves and was impacted by(again, Kino, Jayce, Elora, girl who was beheaded by Ambessa).
In the final fight, she's not fighting directly still- she's supporting Caitlyn & she had no real intention to hurt Ambessa but circumstances keep forcing her to. Jayce's speech about how she gets to choose where she goes feels a little....pointless because yes she SHOULD get to choose, but the Arcane sets everyone on a course- no exceptions.
At the end of the day, Mel is headed back to Noxus to a throne with a philosophy she doesn't really want. Does Mel want to be a wolf? Is this how she wanted Noxus to turn away from being a society focus on war and violence? Can she turn things around, when the presence of the Arcane inside her is going to put her into positions where she'll just have to keep on fighting?
Viktor's kinda obvious but in the og timeline the Arcane and the hexcore keep sucking him into relying on it and abandoning his humanity. It's the only way he can live, be free of the disease and his disability which he's come to loathe about himself. And it's like, Mel & Viktor are both wrenched away from what they are as people because of the arcane but specifically the systems around them which view the possession of the arcane as something to be exploited for gain, ignoring the people and their wishes.

So I FINALLY watched Andor and damn it was good, I can't believe I waited so long to watch it, it honestly reminded me that yes, I still love Star Wars, actually, and just... it was SO GOOD.
Here's some random thoughts! Many spoilers!
love that the main villains were mostly ISB agents because I've always thought the ISB is terrifying so I think it's amazing Andor made use of that
Bee!!! Thank you for giving me another droid I would die for. He was sad about Maarva! He didn't want to leave!!! 😭😭😭😭
The writing was so good, especially for Star Wars, so many banger lines. Cassian's "I would rather die trying to take them down than live giving them what they want" now lives rent free in my mind.
I wanted Andy Serkis (sorry, Kino Loy) to live SO BAD, his "I can't swim" wrecked me.
More Mon Mothma! Wonderful getting so much depth to her as a politician, a Rebel, and as a woman.
I LOVED how much it delved into the grit of the Rebellion, of what it actually would have been like trying to fight that war, of the sacrifices and choices made. The fact that there was someone like Luthen deciding what assets were the most valuable and what lives could be lost in order to protect them, that fifty deaths were acceptable if it would protect an asset in the ISB, that there were people like Cinta who would do ANYTHING for the Rebellion and sacrifice anyone because the Rebellion had to come first, who wouldn't blink twice at murdering Cassian if Luthen said it had to happen.
They brought Saw back!
I adore that random guy in the tower, banging away <3
Everything about the funeral sequence was brilliant
Luthen and his ISB asset, that speech he made about what he had sacrificed, A++++
Bix was so fucking beautiful and the way she was tortured fucked me up.
Goddamn but Syril is a fucking weirdo
I also loved that because it was very much a show about being on the ground in the days of the Empire that it showed what life was like, that Cassian could be in the wrong place at the wrong time and wind up with a ridiculous prison sentence for not really doing much of anything. Watching him and the other prisoners stuck in that mindless factory and always threatened with torture and death was so rough, and how conditioned they had become to just do it, just get by, because they'll get out eventually, and then to realize that no one was actually getting out!
And of course that they were building for the Death Star because OF COURSE they were. And it being Cassian just made that so much more of a gut punch.
I really liked Vel, like, a lot.
Finally, Cassian is just so beautiful and so sad and so determined and I want him to have everything and I want him to have people love him to happiness 🥺🥺🥺😭😭😭

i am such a slut for that moment when Kino is giving his rousing speech and looks at Cassian when he steals his line: “and i’d rather die trying to take them down than giving them what they want” and Cassian’s face is just like “oh fuck… oh fuck i’m a leader”. that’s cinema. 🤌
THAT'S CINEMA

how are you finding ffxiv btw? curious to hear what you think of it so far if youre open to sharing!
i wrote up some early impressions here! tl;dr, it's got me good. the people who said i'd like it were absolutely right. i'm enjoying talking about it, so have some more
it's funny to see how many of the game's incidental quests follow the "you look like an adventurer" format. "you look like an adventurer, go save my cat from that tree," "you look like an adventurer, bring me a blue flower with red thorns," etc. it's a format i've been banned from using at my job - our narrative policy is that it feels gamey, and questgivers should always have a deeper reason to solicit the player specifically. that said, even the starting cities have a dizzying amount of sidequests, and you can't afford to be precious when you're writing at that scale. hat tip to the writers for having to come up with it all!
i mean, really, it blows my mind how much there is to do. i worried that i was chewing through the ARR story too quickly, but my friends keep saying this is only the beginning? omg
i find myself chasing a kind of roleplay that i haven't before: one that revolves around the game's time-of-day system. since cutscenes [in general - i guess some are forced] match the current weather and light, i've been scheduling cutscenes around what seems most cinematic or plot-appropriate. i waited until nightfall to do the greenbliss festival and hear the grand company speeches to make them more solemn. by coincidence, i fought foulques during a downpour, and it felt so much more dramatic. so did crossing thanalan at nigh noon. you know that bad thing that happens at the waking sands? i trudged all the way to the church alone in the dead of midnight afterward. now that's kino!!
oh yeah, those veteran friends i mentioned earlier? they're obsessed with which eligible bachelor i'll attach my character to. i'm so flattered. how can you not be. getting ubereats deliveries of "yeah, this one is a miserable bastard, you might like him." i'm told that the game implicitly encourages this sort of thing by stressing how much your player means to the major characters. no wonder you've all been having so much fun over here
i made some rookie mistakes in the character creator, so no screenshots yet ): thank goodness you get a free fantasia eventually
i have more details cooking, though. i see her as a fallen dragoon who thought she'd failed at being a hero and has been given a second chance. starting in gridania was less a "newbie lancer" thing and more a kurosawa "stranger comes to town and solves its problems by the sword" thing. she's also been forged-in-battle friends with raubahn for many years, and i've heard he gets a lot of story, so i'm looking forward to that.
don't worry, i've been forearmed about what happens-
[the vaudeville cane drags me offstage]

I started reading/playing Coquette Dragoon recently and telling my girlfriend all about it. And as someone who is a trans girl but not a woman and kinda more like a puppy and age regresses and has speech issues with trouble smiling and emoting and likes girls. Like everything about your characters resonates so strongly with me. It feels like you reached inside my brain or we're incredibly on the same wavelength. And there's robots. 10/10 game
glad i can provide kino

Buddy Daddies interview with Kino Hina
Interview with Kino Hina (voice actor for Unasaka Miri)
Interviewer: When you first saw the character design, description, and other information about Unasaka Miri, what impression did you have?
Kino: The first time I received and read the script for episode 1 was at the audition. In the script, a 4-year-old girl turned up in the middle of an intense gunfight - I remember it was quite the shocking encounter. As for the character design, it ranged from a natural smiling face to more comical looks; I thought it was very expressive. "I might have to give a more exaggerated performance, if I'm going to live up to these faces...!" I thought, and let my imagination run away with me.
Interviewer: Now that you've actually acted as Miri, what do you think makes her appealing and interesting?
Kino: Plenty of people with actual parenting experience were involved in the series production, and so Miri's speech and behaviour are very close to those of a real child. Everyone is continuously at the mercy of her unpredictable actions and dialogue, and I think that's her charm. They all get jerked around big-time! But the way she's so straightforward and earnest about everything makes it endearing. I really enjoyed giving such a free and unrestrained performance!
Interviewer: Miri is the only source of solace in this hard-boiled world, and singlehandedly brings all the coziness to the series. When acting as her, was there anything you kept in mind?
Kino: Ever since the audition, I was directed to give a realistic portrayal, without the sort of theatrical exaggeration that is usually used when playing a small child. I was very conscious of this the whole time I was acting. And so, in the recording sessions, I constantly aimed to let the words slip out without thinking about them, but it was really difficult. During the practice takes, I figured that since she was a child, I would try letting the emotions run wild without worrying about my volume, but I was directed to cut back on that a little. The series alternates between serious scenes and cozy scenes, and I recorded almost all my scenes together with Toyonaga-san and Uchiyama-san; their acting really drew me in and made every scene a delight to perform.
Interviewer: Please tell us your impressions of Kurusu Kazuki and Suwa Rei, and what you find appealing about each of them.
Kino: Kazuki is a cheerful man of the world. But deep in his heart, he also harbours lingering scars from his past, and so he's a character who flees from love. Rei lacks energy and doesn't really know how to smile, but he's a highly skilled assassin; due to his childhood and upbringing, he's a character who still doesn't know what love is. I really love those scenes where they're talking not as assassins, and not in front of Miri - those occasional conversations where you can glimpse both of their true selves. The "I won't ask" "I wouldn't tell" scene, and the "For three…?" "For three" scene - those scenes so meticulously show their emotional development and growth as the story progresses. They're a must-see.
Interviewer: From the episodes that have aired so far, are there any scenes that left an impression on you, or that you're especially fond of?
Kino: The episode 1 scene where Kazuki becomes Papa Kazuki - "I'm your papa!" - and the episode 3 scene where Rei becomes Papa Rei - "I am... her papa." - were both incredibly memorable. When we were recording the lines for both of those scenes, actually hearing those words was much more impactful than I'd imagined. I felt myself getting goosebumps from sheer joy. My favourite scene is from episode 5, when Miri and Kyu-chan (Kugi Kyutaro) split into one group, and Kazuki and Rei into another. Kyu-chan has been shrouded in mystery until that point, but he unexpectedly ends up watching over Miri, and when she asks about their jobs, Kyu-chan tells her in his usual tone that Kazuki and Rei are a comedian and an oil baron. Those fake jobs are so unexpected, it really lightens the mood. And I love the scenes where Kazuki is in a tricky situation and getting even more worked-up than usual; I always giggle to myself when watching them. Oh, and I also adore the scenes where Rei makes his deadpan quips; when we were recording, there were so many times I had to hold in my laughter, thinking, "That's how you're delivering it?! Brilliant!"
Interviewer: Please tell us what you think are the selling points of this series "Buddy Daddies".
Kino: The interactions at the government office, the conversations when preparing to enrol in daycare, Miri throwing a tantrum and yelling "I'm boooored~!" as she kicks the car seat - all those are realistic elements that aren't featured in other stories. But at the same time, there are plenty of heavily fictional aspects; the fact that you can enjoy both these things makes it a very captivating series. The story blends realism, comedy, and serious drama, and moves along at a fast pace; I feel like every episode goes by in the blink of an eye. Besides Kazuki, Rei, and Miri, the other characters are really charming, and will be important in future. There are many characters I'd like you to look out for, but personally, I love Anna-sensei and Miri's friends, so I hope you enjoy what happens at the daycare!
Interviewer: Finally, please give a message to everyone who is enjoying this series.
Kino: Thank you so much for watching "Buddy Daddies"! No matter whether watching it makes you nostalgic for your own childhood days, or you're currently raising a child, or you're thinking your own parents must have had a really tough time. I think this is a series that can be enjoyed by a wide variety of people, all with their own different perspectives. Acting as Miri has brought up a lot of events from my own childhood that I'd totally forgotten. Since it's an original series, there's no way to know what will unfold from now on; please do keep watching to the end!

so much has already been said about saber's general quality or lack thereof that i guess i won't bother typing up a traditional post like that. rather what i've been thinking about most is just how similar saber ends up being to ghost.
which normally wouldn't be strange for 2 shows with the same head writer, but. of course mr fukuda was otherwise occupied for much of both of them so, regardless of any jokes i may have made about the situation in the past, it is honestly kind of crazy just how much they're both these like encapsulations of "the tropes & plot concepts that this one guy seems to like." guess that's a sign of very talented support writers. being able to fulfill someone else's vision in a way that feels... maybe not always coherent per se but authentic to them.
it also stands out to me bc obviously we all know a certain subset of the rider fanbase still considers kamen rider ghost to have been some sort of war crime against humanity, but i will frequently see this same type of fan go to bat for saber, call it kino and whatnot, and it's kind of fascinating. i feel like an anthropologist when i see & study such phenomena in the wild.
in 2016 a rider show that is twee & sentimental, about a kind hearted lead who often gives cornball speeches being dragged into circumstances ft. a supernatural otherworld, with strong individual stories for its secondary & tertiary riders but pretty weak & meandering overarching plots and central villains, is dubbed by some to be an unrivaled catastrophe that they rage against to this very day. but a mere 5 years later the exact same sort of show airs and is then upheld by many of the very same people as the only good reiwa. the only one that makes you feel anything. the only one that isn't soulless.
so much can change so quickly in the status of this franchise, that what was beloathed can become celebrated in what feels like a blink. a real "you don't know what you got til it's gone" situation. personally i appreciate saber for that, too. like one last remnant of heisei that snuck its way into this new era. i would be hard pressed to call it an amazing tv show but i do agree with those opinions i've studied on some level. it really is the only one to make me feel anything.

thinking about yuto's big hands being stuffed under eunha's skirt.
they only met cuz sinb wanted a friend to accompany her to kino's party and eunha only tagged along cuz she didn't want to suffer a serious case of fomo between her and her members.
between the nervous drinking and the unfiltered speeches that left her mouth before she could even think, eunha found herself cornered with the big man kneeling before her. a deep, delicious groan vocalized under her- eliciting a lengthy and shameless moan from her as eunha takes in the view before her.
"yuto here plays guitar, and he's super good at it." kino mentions towards eunha, introducing his friend to the circle. "you must have really good hands then." eunha mumbled, barely to her self as she realized she let her mind slip after taking a sip of her 5th drink of the night.
"how's my hands, noona?" yuto speaks softly, his voice heavy and laced with lust as he remains his gaze on her. eunha could feel herself growing dizzy, her body heating up from how insatiable her hoobae is before her- and how insistent he is to pleasure her.
the way they were barely hidden- her tight little skirt rumpled around her waist and her leg propped on his shoulder, a hundred percent flashing her embarrassingly drenched pussy to anyone that passes by- and this handsome, fucking big man... willingly got on his knees to impress her with his fingers?
eunha didn't even realize the sounds she was making as her hands reacted by tugging the soft locks of the man below her on instinct. her whines and whimpers growing shorter, and higher as yuto indulges into her- his rough tongue so keen, so dedicated into slurping and lapping each drop of her juice. and his fingers- god- eunha couldn't believe how deep his digits could penetrate her- and how full she'd let him stretch her (3 fingers in- and she's out of her mind).
"so good, yuto- god. so fucking good!" eunha manages to praise between her labored breaths. yuto only groans at her words, amping his ministrations as he seeks for her release. each thrusts of his fingers grows deep and more intentional- he can't help but put on a proud smug as he watches his noona's face scrunch up in pleasure at every shove of his fingers.
