“He’s me, Jaime realized suddenly. I am speaking to myself, as I was, all cocksure arrogance and empty chivalry. This is what it does to you, to be too good too young,” jaime viii, a storm of swords

Ghost as Jon's "white shadow" in AGOT Tyrion III:
They walked, with Ghost pacing along beside Jon like a white shadow.
Ser Mandon Moore as Joffrey's "white shadow" in ACOK Tyrion IX:
Joffrey was galloping at his side, whey-faced, with Ser Mandon Moore a white shadow on his left.
and then, with Ser Balon Swann, two "white shadows" to Tyrion in ACOK Tyrion VIX:
His two white shadows were always with him; Balon Swann and Mandon Moore, beautiful in their pale plate.
and again, more menacingly, later in the same chapter:
The knight was a white steel shadow, his eyes shining darkly behind his helm.
Ser Barristan Selmy as Daenerys' "white shadow" in ADWD Daenerys I:
Dany glimpsed Ser Barristan sliding closer, a white shadow at her side.
Five chapters later, Ghost as Jon's "white shadow" again in ADWD Jon II:
Ghost padded after him, a white shadow at his side
and again in ADWD Jon VII:
Ghost ran with them, a white shadow at Jon's side.
That's almost every instance of the concept of the "white shadow" in ASOIAF, and I think the limited context is striking: this is only in reference to the Kingsguard, clad in their pure white-enameled armor, and Ghost, Jon's all-white guardian.
If we are assuming Jon is a lost Targaryen Prince, then perhaps we might say Ghost is spiritually the first member of his Kingsguard.
I think it's a sweet thought.
However ... that's notably omitting the third context for the phrase "white shadow"
From the AGOT Prologue:
Will saw movement from the corner of his eye. Pale shapes gliding through the wood. He turned his head, glimpsed a white shadow in the darkness.
From AGOT Jon VIII:
"We have white shadows in the woods and unquiet dead stalking our halls, and a boy sits the Iron Throne," he said in disgust.
From ACOK Jon III:
"The cold gods," she said. "The ones in the night. The white shadows."
and again:
We ride north, after Mance Rayder and these Others, these white shadows and their wights. We seek them, Gilly.
From AFFC Samwell III:
Maester Aemon's woken up and wants to hear about these dragons. He's talking about bleeding stars and white shadows and dreams and . . . if we could find out more about these dragons, it might help give him ease. Help me."
What can we make of that, then?
These are the only three contexts for this imagery, actually. I think it works if Ghost is sort of like Jon's Kingsguard but then... can there be some connection in this phrase with the Others? What could that mean?

The way they get you is telling you “it’s an honor to serve” and you’re doing your duty “for the realm” and all of a sudden they’re putting a white cloak around your shoulders and a sword in your hand and you’re standing outside the door of the idiot prince and making sure he doesn’t sneak out into the Street of Silk and break his neck riding a horse but before breakfast you have to give a therapy session to the second son who you’re pretty sure is trying to seduce his older brother for the succession and become the first case of gay valyrian incest and also you’re sleeping in the same room as six other men for the rest of your life and you don’t even have dental

“What of your magic?”
“Died with the king.”
“So, what are you now exactly? Except a conceited immigrant with no reinforcements, land, or power and lusts after women beyond his reach?” Nyx swallowed, he didn’t know how to answer to that.
“Yeah… You summed it up pretty well, I guess.”

At the Tournament of Harrenhal, a legendary event immortalised in song, the final joust was a clash between Crown Prince Rhaegar Targaryen and the enigmatic Knight of the Laughing Tree. King Aerys II, consumed by madness, was desperate to uncover the knight's identity. Against all odds, the mysterious knight won, revealing herself to be a young maiden, aged between six and ten, in an audacious twist.
𝐿𝓎𝒶𝓃𝓃𝒶 𝒮𝓉𝒶𝓇𝓀
Ser Lyanna Stark, the first maiden sworn as a knight and a sister of the Kingsguard, made a lasting impression on our order. Her courage and skill were evident at the Tourney of Harrenhal, where she triumphed over famed knights, including Crown Prince Rhaegar Targaryen. Her humility in offering her favour to King Aerys II earned her the rank of knighthood. She filled the void left by the fallen Ser Jonothor Darry.
𝑅𝒽𝒶𝑒𝑔𝒶𝓇 𝒯𝒶𝓇𝑔𝒶𝓇𝓎𝑒𝓃
Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, initially focused on reading before becoming a skilled warrior. Knighted at seventeen, he earned respect in tourneys despite his reluctance towards combat and won popularity with his charisma and musical talent, though his relationship with his father, King Aerys II, was strained. His marriage to Elia Martell, marked by familial tension and exacerbated by Aerys’s paranoia, faced additional strain from Elia’s poor health and Aerys’s mistrust. At the tourney of Harrenhal, Rhaegar’s unexpected loss to the Knight of the Laughing Tree—revealed to be a girl—led him to knight Lyanna Stark, who became crucial figure in his life.

(S4) ASoIaF "Career": Kingsguard
Tumblr media
DESCRIPTION (Excerpt)
Also known poetically as the White Swords or white cloaks, they are the royal bodyguards of the Iron Throne. Alternatively, if there is a Queen (regnant), they'd be called "Queensguard".
The Kingsguard was founded during the reign of the first Targaryen king on the Iron Throne, Aegon the Conqueror. The first Kingsguard was created at the suggestion of Aegon's sister-wife, Queen Visenya Targaryen, after a Dornish assassination attempt on their lives in the streets of King's Landing in 10 AC. She deliberately modeled the Kingsguard vows of holding no lands or title on the ancient vows of the Night's Watch, and seven knights were chosen because the king ruled the Seven Kingdoms.

Levels
"Kingsguard or Queensguard": One of the seven other Kingsguard or Queensguard, you are one of those regarded as the finest knights in the Seven Kingdoms and are sworn to protect your monarch and their family with your own life, to obey their commands, and to keep their secrets.
“Lord Commander”: You are the person who holds this title as the most senior sworn knight of the Kingsguard. You a member of the small counciland were appointed by the monarch, with your seniority and ability having been factors in the selection.

Ser Arys Oakheart, The Queenmaker
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"I will not be remembered as Ser Arys the Unworthy. I will not soil my cloak."
Cut to Always Sunny title card: Ser Arys soils his cloak. My second take on the white knight, this one more focused on his time in Dorne. As I've said before, I think I'm in the minority for enjoying Arys' slightly random one chapter - I've always viewed the core idea of ASOIAF as a fantasy story told by the people usually pushed to the margins - eg instead of Robb Stark, avenging warrior hero, we get the story of his mother balancing worry and pride. I view Arys' chapter as the most literal take on this - we get "boring white guy in scary exotic orientalist locale", then he gets killed off and we see the much more complex story from the perspective of characters he wrote off as stereotypes. Of course the counterpoint to this gambit is that it puts a lot of pressure on you to not lean into any orientalism in the rest of the story which... well.
The mini is a Golden Company one, I love it for the mix of armour and fabrics. Kingsguard white, white, and more white is always a challenge to get looking good, but I'm happy with this one. A little bit of red Dornish sand on his cloak to tie him in to the setting.

a thing that is pissing me the fuck off during this season of hotd is not the supposed scrapping of nettles, the sudden name drop of daeron, not even criston cole, but the fact that NO ONE in the black council has pointed out that rhaenyra needs more queenguards. by the start of the season she only had three, and since then they began dropping like flies. ser lorent marbrand is the only one left standing. where is the search for the other six??? aegon solved his kingsguard problem really quickly, why doesn’t lord celtigar or fucking arthur broome say “hey rhaenyra, maybe it’s time to start recruiting some men that will swear to die for you, because, you know, we’re at war and the people we are fighting against have already sent an assassin to kill you”.
while i’m on the matter, WHERE IS HAROLD WESTERLING??? last season it was implied that he would go to dragonstone, but it’s been 6 episodes and none of him. did he pull a barristan selmy and is on his way to volantis to declare himself to saera targaryen?
