Very funny that Lysa doesn't recognise Sansa when she meets her and Littlefinger in Littlefinger's hall. Like, here is a teenager who you last saw about five years ago, she looks a lot like you and your sister, oh, and coincidentally there's a nationwide manhunt for your niece, but we won't think about that for too long because fucking Littlefinger is here and requires full attention

A Game of Thrones, Catelyn IV
Littlefinger hefted the knife lightly in his hand, testing the grip. He flipped it in the air, caught it again with his other hand. “Such sweet balance.
“You want to find the owner, is that the reason for this visit? You have no need of Ser Aron for that, my lady. You should have come to me.”
“And if I had,” she said, “what would you have told me?”
“I would have told you that there was only one knife like this at King’s Landing.”
He grasped the blade between thumb and forefinger, drew it back over his shoulder, and threw it across the room with a practiced flick of his wrist. It struck the door and buried itself deep in the oak, quivering.
“It’s mine.”
“Yours?” It made no sense. Petyr had not been at Winterfell.
“Until the tourney on Prince Joffrey’s name day,” he said, crossing the room to wrench the dagger from the wood.
“I backed Ser Jaime in the jousting, along with half the court.” Petyr’s sheepish grin made him look half a boy again. “When Loras Tyrell unhorsed him, many of us became a trifle poorer. Ser Jaime lost a hundred golden dragons, the queen lost an emerald pendant, and I lost my knife. Her Grace got the emerald back, but the winner kept the rest.”
“Who?” Catelyn demanded, her mouth dry with fear. Her fingers ached with remembered pain.
“The Imp,” said Littlefinger as Lord Varys watched her face. “Tyrion Lannister.”

tbh i don’t think lyanna and sansa share many (if any) parallels, and in many aspects, lyanna serves as a narrative foil to sansa. robert baratheon directly connected his unfulfilled betrothal with lyanna to joffrey and sansa’s betrothal, and we all know how that went. sansa, who was fooled by the boy she was betrothed to, refused to look beyond the surface until it was too late, vs lyanna, who was able to see beyond the surface and took actions to prevent her fate. lyanna became her own knight in shining armor and played with swords, while sansa is thee princess in the tower who wanted everything to be pretty. lyanna, the girl with the sword and shield who protected the weak, put herself in bodily harm for someone she barely knew, which caused the mad king to go after her, vs sansa, the girl who sided with cersei, a character that parallels the mad king, and joffrey, a cruel prince, ultimately dooming innocents and disconnecting herself from her stark identity in the process. it’s true that sansa has been learning to look beyond the surface and extend kindness to the ‘others,’ but how does this actually parallel lyanna? how is having the kindness trait a parallel? it’s also true that sansa does eventually end up protecting others, but i’m once again not sure if i’d call that a true parallel. and imo, sansa is an idealist, which is something i love about her, but i think lyanna was a realist who believed in chivalry and honor despite it all. as i see it, sansa will believe in chivalry and honor despite it all as well, but they’re still foils due to their starkly different starting points. and though it’s true that they are both connected to songs, sansa is a singer who sings to people who ask while lyanna isn’t stated to be one. instead, lyanna had a relationship with a famous singer, which again places them as foils. i’ve digressed quite a bit here and there, so to end things off, i want to say that while both disappeared with ‘bael’ figures, i consider them foils here as well because lyanna was doomed, but i pray and believe that sansa is not. and for god’s sake, let’s hope petyr baelish never touches sansa again. let’s also hope that sansa returns to winterfell alive, even if she gets there as a living Stone. lyanna wasn’t so lucky, returning dead and all.

medieval chess au….? that sounds so cool
so originally i wanted to do some kind of historical au for chess set during the medieval era, but the more i looked into it the more i realized that trying to do something like that in a real world context while still keeping the same real world political context (apolitical chess is just not as interesting to me tbh) just wasn't going to work, so instead i decided to do what george r.r. martin did when he was writing game of thrones and use real world history (game of thrones was largely inspired by the war of the roses) and real world politics within the context of a fantasy setting, so the main conflict is still east vs west, but it's the eastern kingdoms vs the western kingdoms.
freddie is ser fredrick, the gilded lion, born and raised in the golden city (the main seat of power among the western kingdoms similar to king's landing, located by the sea) to become king, beloved by most while also being regarded as a petulant child that (seemingly) hasn't had to deal with any real hardship, and then across the emerald sea are the eastern kingdoms, a colder, harsher climate compared to the western kingdoms, which is where prince anatoly, the black prince (or the white wolf, depending on who you talk to), lives with his wife, svetlana, and his advisor, aleksander molokov, who himself was born in the small settlement of alexandrovitch, located just outside the black gates, which separates the northernmost mountain range and the freefolk lands from the rest of the southern kingdoms. florence, meanwhile, is ser florence, a former advisor and freddie's royal mistress whose family comes from the eastern kingdoms but grew up in the golden city before deciding she was fed up with her life and ran away to become a knight instead, and then other plot details that include things like anatoly abdicating the throne because he never wanted the responsibility of ruling a kingdom and leaving his wife to take over the responsibility instead as the czarina and her doing so knowing that there are people who depended on them for leadership and guidance (and honestly probably being better at it than he was), molokov secretly plotting to take over the throne for himself (having already earned himself the nickname of the wolf whisperer), freddie regularly competing in the tournaments held in the golden city and being a very capable warrior in his own right (he's big on jousting).

A Storm of Swords Book Review
This was a long book, so the review is also long.
It was so exciting to start reading through Jaime’s POV. Seeing how he desperately wants to get back to Cersie, but also can’t help but try to do the right thing when it comes to Brienne.
He jumped in front of a bear for her!!!
His monologue in the baths at Harrenhal was incredible. Finally hearing his full side of the story, and how everyone judged him without even asking any questions.
Also, getting more insight to his and Cersei’s gross relationship. You can see bits and parts of how it’s been so toxic the whole time.
Hearing about Robb’s marriage to Jeyne (A Lannister cousin…) and then seeing how it really caused him to lose the war. I loved Jaime’s quote about how he won the battles but lost the war in a bed chamber.
I read a post about how Robb’s marriage all comes back to Neds ‘infidelity’ and how it affected Jon. Robb saw how his bastard brother was treated by the world and didn’t want a bastard of his own to be treated the same.
I loved that Robb made Jon his heir! We get to see Jon wrestle with the idea of being Lord to Winterfell, and we know he wants the power but he wasn’t willing to burn the Weirwood trees. Now I can’t wait for him to (hopefully) find out he is the king of the North.
Catelyn helping Jaime escape with Brienne will always be one of my favorite plot descions. Her having to choose between her son or her daughter(s). She doesn’t know that Sansa is being beaten every day, nor that Arya is in the Riverlands. But she still chooses them because of her grief to not ‘save’ her youngest sons.
Reading the Red Wedding through Catelyns POV was heartbreaking. “My first son, My last son”. Then reading about how she tore her face up…
Not to mention, having to read Aryas pov post the red wedding. She held out hope that her mom was alive and was going to try to save her… only for her to warg into Nymeria and realize it was too late. 😭
I felt so bad for Sansa the whole book, no matter what she can’t escape a creepy man. Rooting for her to kill Baelish.
The last four hundred pages of this book are insane!! The red wedding, the purple wedding, Tyrions trial, Obyrens death, Tywins death, the Hounds “death”, and Lysas death.
I can’t wait to see what happens with Lady Stoneheart!
Also…. Where is Rickon?
Overall Rating: 5/5⭐️

Who Ran King’s Landing During The Greyjoy Rebellion?
A random thought that occurred to me while trying to sleep last night: Do we know who oversaw King’s Landing when Robert’s forces were subduing the Iron Islands during Balon Greyjoys’s rebellion?
The members of the small council known to be at the Iron Islands were Robert Baratheon, Stannis Baratheon, and Barristan Selmy.
I’m eliminating Varys, Littlefinger, and Cersei as candidates. There is no way a eunuch master of whispers and a low-born coin counter were left in charge of the realm. And Littlefinger would surely have reminisced in his viewpoint chapters if he was in control of the realm. Cersei also doesn’t recall ruling the realm in Robert’s absence. And Robert was definitely leery of letting Cersei having power.
Do we know if Jon Arryn went to the Islands? He may have felt that as Hand of the King he should have gone with Robert but he was also 1) quite elderly and 2) the only remaining trustworthy member of the council to run King’s Landing.
Renly would have been around 12 years old so he would be too young to be appointed to the council. Who was Master of Laws before Renly?
It comes down to Jon, the unknown master of laws, or a short-term “hand of the king” replacement/castellan? I’m not sure who that would be though – all the obvious choices were at the Iron Islands.  Ned and Stannis accompanied Robert. Tywin or Kevan Lannister would be a wise choice but I can’t imagine Tywin being willing to stay behind after the Iron Islanders destroyed the Lannister fleet. He’s not one to suffer a humiliation without exacting retribution. Where Tywin goes, Kevan follows. Maybe Hoster Tully if his sickness hadn’t started yet. Renly is eliminated again due to his youth.
So were left with Jon Arryn, the unknown master of laws, or a temporary castellan. I’m leaning towards Jon Arryn remaining in King’s Landing but does anyone have a definite answer?

Fuck it, let's talk about Littlefinger
(the ASOIAF character, not just fingers in general. Also, I've said "Brandon Stark" for Ned's brother, and "Bran Stark" for Ned's son)
Trigger warning: rape and forced abortion
So one of the things I've said before is that I love ASOIAF for many reasons, including the complexities and backstories of all the characters. I suppose that's why there's a bazillion characters and the books are so long.
Anyway, one interesting example of narrative framing is the perspective we get on Littlefinger. He's (arguably) the main antagonist in the first book and is responsible for everything from Jon Arryn and Ned's death to the Tyrell marriage to Joffrey's assassination. We see him as a scheming villain, determined to harm our saintly Starks.
Littlefinger was born as a second-generation immigrant and heir to a minor lordship. Thanks to his parents' relationship with fuckhead Hoster Tully, he got to foster at Riverrun, where he befriended Cat, Lysa and Edmure. The books are interested in the "outsider" perspective on power status, hence Jon Snow's POV, and arguably Theon and Arya, too. They live in the home, they're part of the family... kinda. Sansa always thinks of Jon as her "bastard half-brother", Theon knows that Ned might have to kill him, and Arya doesn't fit neatly into her assigned gender role. They see Rob and Sansa and want that, kind of, but know they'll never get it.
Therefore, in his youth, Littlefinger knew that he was smart, knew that he wanted power, yet was keenly aware that it was almost impossible for him to socially climb. He does -- we'll get to that in a bit -- but as a child, he knows it's unlikely. Think of Rob and Jon playing in Winterfell and Jon yelling "I'm the Lord of Winterfell" and Rob just returning "no, my mother says you won't be". It's a horrible situation to be in. We don't get Littlefinger's POV, but if we did, I think there's a good chance he would remember a similar scenario.
Then there's Littlefinger's relationship to Catlyn and Lysa. Little boys often have crushes on little girls, and it's usually pretty sweet and can sometimes become a nice romance or just fade away. We hear that Catlyn is intelligent and beautiful as an adult, so it's easy to see the appeal, and Catlyn also has status through her Tully blood and an understanding of Machiavellian power plays because her father raised her as his heir until Edmure was born. One could easily see Littlefinger's desire for Catlyn being a desire for power and status, as well as her own merits.
Lysa had a crush on Littlefinger, creating the incesty love triangle that GRRM loves so much. I can't imagine playing kissing games with a foster brother and a sister, tbh. Littlefinger himself seems to only see Lysa as a pawn, and uses her feelings to get her to do what she wants. The narrative suggests that, for a time, there's Catlyn, mourning her mother; Lysa, mourning her mother and interested in a boy who doesn't really care about her; Edmure, just being a baby; and Littlefinger, caught up in rules and restrictions: allowed to be close to what he wants, but never truly part of the team.
Events start to occur. Fuckhead Hoster Tully decides to set up marriage alliances for Catlyn and Lysa. Lysa meets Jamie Lannister, who barely pays her any attention (he's distracted by the presence of his hero, Brynden "Blackfish" Tully). Catlyn meets Brandon Stark, who has power, status, a noble house, physical prowess -- everything Littlefinger wants. On the night the Stark-Tully engagement is arranged, Littlefinger gets drunk. He can't cope with the years of complicated class dynamics, he's heartbroken, and he's what, 14? He's immature and acts like it. Then Lysa rapes him.
I'm not a psychologist so I can't comment on the impact of sexual violence, especially when gender and power play into the situation in this way. However, Lysa did an unforgivable thing, and there was nobody Littlefinger could turn to. That's horrifying. I also think that more should be made about Littlefinger's comments about shutting your eyes and getting it over with in relation to being in bed with "an ugly woman".
Soon after, he challenges Brandon Stark to a duel for Catlyn's hand. Catlyn "betrays" him (in Littlefinger's mind) by giving Brandon her favour, Edmure "betrays" him by "squiring" for Brandon, and then Brandon nearly kills him. So we have a teenager who is 1) in huge amounts of physical pain, 2) without friends or allies, 3) was recently raped and 4) considered unimportant and insignificant. Then, Lysa rapes him again. The fact that this poor child didn't have a full mental breakdown is genuinely suprising.
We don't know if Littlefinger knew about Lysa's pregnancy at the time. What Hoster did to her was also unforgivable -- violence begets violence, and Lysa and Hoster's relationship is full of toxicity and harm. Hoster is also just generally monstrous. If Littlefinger did know, that's another layer of complexity where his foster father aborts Littlefinger's baby, a physical reminder of the sexual violence Littlefinger endured.
A few years later Lysa convinces her then-husband, Jon Arryn, to bring Littlefinger to King's Landing. He is traumatised, he is resentful, and he is cunning. He works hard to enter the places he was once barred from, like the court, the Red Keep and the small council. Now he can take his revenge on everyone who hurt him.
GRRM often talks about the futility of revenge. House Martell is the most obvious example of this, and the speech Elaria gives is beautiful and poignient. Littlefinger doesn't get revenge on Hoster or Brandon Stark. He does kill Lysa, but that's more to shut her up. In a story with a different perspective -- and a few characters kept alive -- we could see Littlefinger as a Kill Bill style avenger, ruining the lives and families of all of those who harmed him. It could be easy to root for him, not against him as the narrative sets up.
Revenge isn't simple, and that's why Littlefinger doesn't succed and isn't an inspirational character. He never confronts anyone on what happened to him -- he's too psychologically damaged -- so instead he kills Ned and Jon Arryn, two people who had nothing to do with his traumatic experiences at Riverrun, and then he hyperfixates on poor Sansa, who looks like Catlyn in his memory. He's immature and stunted in his mid-teens. I wonder if Littlefinger and Sansa lived for another 10/20 years he'd find himself losing interest because she moved on and he can't.
Littlefinger will likely die because of Sansa, and nobody will miss him. He's not a good person. He's groomed and lied and manipulated her, and the horrors he inflicted on Jeyne Poole, supposedly her best friend, are even worse. I don't see his future death as triumphant, though, in an unbiased overview kind of way. The Starks will celebrate, because he killed their dad. No one else will really care. The Lords Declarant have got rid of an annoyance, and he wasn't really working with King Tommen or the Small Council any more.
I think there is some sadness, though, for the child who wanted to be included, wanted to be loved, and who was instead hated, abused, ignored and scarred. RIP Littlefinger, a victim of the patriachy and the class structure.

A Game of Thrones, Eddard IV
Inside, Catelyn was waiting. She cried out when she saw him, ran to him, and embraced him fiercely.
“My lady,” Ned whispered in wonderment.
“Oh, very good,” said Littlefinger, closing the door. “You recognized her.”
“I feared you’d never come, my lord,” she whispered against his chest.

WRITTING CHALLENGE
PETYR BAELISH X READER: dragon chaos
nothing more exciting than being the true love of Petyr Baelish.
Warnings: petyr baelish x f! oc
I see with a strange feeling of sadness, melancholy and euphoria when I see how the sun says goodbye to the sea. I am alone, although guarded, I am a hostage after all. However, this moment of peace nothing can ruin it. When I was little, I always felt a strong connection to water. From a small pond, snowflakes falling on my face, the liquid in the bathtub, the sparkling and fresh rivers, the smell and the waves of the sea. I feel a lump in my throat. The pressure is so strong that it causes tears to threaten to stream down my face and destroy my façade as a submissive lady. "Lady Taryn, you was not supposed to be around." Shae's voice is concerned and she walks over to my side, checking for any injuries or injuries. I let myself be attended to, it is Shae's language of affection after all. Seeing that I have nothing, she looks at me doubtfully. "Sit by my side." I know she looks at me in alarm. But there is nothing to fear, it is normal for two company ladies to meet together in their free time because poor Sansa is being attended by another maid. I lightly pat it on the sweet-smelling grass that is delicate to the touch. "I feel lonely, Shae." "Why? Everyone surrounds you at parties…" she says in a tone that was meant to be mocking, but ends up being silent envy. "You know what I mean, my friend." Shae stays still for a second, I can see her doubts about what friendship in Kinds Landing consists of. She has grown up in a fairly low and harsh social barrier, contemplating prostitution from the Starks' point of view is purely disgusting. But I didn't think so. I saw them as victims of the system. But if I said that, Shae would punch me with the excuse of feeling sorry for her, nothing crazy. "Shae?" I ask, my throat cold. "Yes, my lady?" "How was the story of your parents? Her jaw immediately tensed. Her gaze is slightly less sweet. I know that she appreciates me, but there are lines that must not be crossed. But right now I just want to make others angry for everything they did to me. "Don't you dare ask me about that" her voice is threatening despite maintaining her lower class demeanor. Fleetingly as she turns around, I catch a glimpse of a dagger concealed in her skirt. I'll ask her that later, especially with Tyrion.
