Portrait of King William the Fourth (1765-1837)
Artist: Sir David Wilkie (Scottish, 1785–1841)
Date: 1838
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Birmingham Museums Trust, Birmingham, England
William IV
William IV (William Henry; 21 August 1765 – 20 June 1837) was King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and King of Hanover from 26 June 1830 until his death in 1837. The third son of George III, William succeeded his elder brother George IV, becoming the last king and penultimate monarch of Britain's House of Hanover.
William served in the Royal Navy in his youth, spending time in British North America and the Caribbean, and was later nicknamed the "Sailor King". In 1789, he was created Duke of Clarence and St Andrews. Between 1791 and 1811, he cohabited with the actress Dorothea Jordan, with whom he had ten children. In 1818, he married Princess Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen; William was not known to have had mistresses during their marriage. In 1827, he was appointed Britain's first Lord High Admiral since 1709.
As his two elder brothers died without leaving legitimate issue, William inherited the throne when he was 64 years old. His reign saw several reforms: the Poor Law was updated, child labour restricted, slavery abolished in nearly all of the British Empire, and the electoral system refashioned by the Reform Acts of 1832. Although William did not engage in politics as much as his brother or his father, he was the last British monarch to appoint a prime minister contrary to the will of Parliament. He granted his German kingdom a short-lived liberal constitution. William had no surviving legitimate children at the time of his death, so he was succeeded by his niece Victoria in the United Kingdom and his brother Ernest Augustus in Hanover.

interesting opinion piece in the New York Times. Saw it on twitter retweeted by Jake Tapper. It’s written by the daughter of Ronald Reagan about regretting writing a book about her family.

Heartwarming! A senior citizen (Charles) took over the family business (the British monarchy) after his mother passed away, so his family and friends (rich white people) threw him a party (an unnecessarily expensive coronation) to support him.

Maud of Wales - Queen of Norway, was the youngest daughter of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra of the United Kingdom, and the grandaughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
Maud had great taste in gowns, and she was always impeccably attired, for every occasion.
As the wife of King Haakon VII of Norway, Maud must have had a considerable dress allowance.
A remarkable number of her gowns have been preserved.
Here are some of them from the period just prior to WWI, circa 1906-1914.

I think this photo was taken in 1934/1935, because King George V looked really tired and weak. I find it adorable that Queen Elizabeth in this photo as a child tries to imitate the solemn posture of her grandmother Queen Mary.

rewatching an episode of season one of merlin right now, i have a lot of thoughts (arthur legit looks so young it’s messing with my mind realizing how much the characters grow over the seasons and oh my lordy merlin used to be so pure, so trusting, so naive *ugh*) but one thing that just popped into my head: how small Camelot looks.
this is probably due to budget reasons, but the fact that random people can show up and demand an audience with uther or appear mysteriously and meet with a prince, it just makes me wonder what that must have been like for merlin both during his time in camelot and after
we’re talking a kingdom’s whose golden age was in an era of petty states and kings, a few centuries after the fall of the roman empire. merlin fics sometimes bring up how popular merlin is among the people of camelot. it highlights the unspoken notion that camelot and its nobles and royals aree within degrees of separation.
the world, after arthur’s death, must have gotten so frightfully big for merlin. i just think, what if merlin had served arthur or another such king in a later era when the size of the kingdom was so much larger? remove the feudalistic background, if that is what they were going for in the series, and who is merlin? its for that reason that i love the joke that merlin would lowkey be a monarchist because yeah, merlin lived an early era of kings where royals could be in such close proximity and held to the standards of their people.
#merlin#bbc merlin#arthur pendragon#merlin bbc#merthur#king arthur#merlin emrys#bbc merthur#incoming headcanon: camelot was a small but mighty kingdom that succeeded in centralizing power within the region#after centuries of destabilization in the aftermath of the fall of the roman empire#the pendragon’s united the region#brought great wealth and respect over the lands#like imagine if this is why the purge succeeded#or maybe this is me trying to make history out of a fictional work

this has been done i know this has been done im sure this has been done but currently obsessed with the brainworm of captain of the king's guard obi-wan kenobi and prince anakin in some fantasy medieval star wars setting of some sort where it's just game of thrones-y enough that when the royal family is overthrown, it's violent and bloody and obi-wan knows that anakin will absolutely be killed in the revolution so he takes him and he runs back to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant that he left years and years ago, when he was just a boy himself.
and anakin is absolutely furious for multiple reasons--mostly he thinks they should have stayed and fought! that they fled like cowards from his homeland is a shame that he can hardly bear. so he's angry at obi-wan for basically kidnapping him and forcing him away from his kingdom when she needed him, and he's angry at the jedi order for accepting them into their ranks but only if they agree to pretend to be Jedi while they're at the Temple. and he's angry at the jedi council because obi-wan had to beg to be given aid and his proud captain of the guards should never have to beg for anything, and yet here he is, begging for help for anakin's sake!
anakin is probably like. nine, obi-wan is twenty-five, and they stay at the temple basically incognito for ten years with anakin 'training to be a padawan' (because he's so strong in the Force that obi-wan points out that it may be a good idea to give him all the lessons in anger management and force control even though he isn't really a padawan in case any of the material sinks in) and obi-wan as a worker in the temple hangar bay.
then the clone wars break out and obi-wan instinctively wants to join the fight with the jedi because he owes them a great debt. not only did they raise him until he was fifteen, but they took him in---took anakin in when they needed them
but anakin has never had any loyalty to the jedi. he is loyal to his planet, which he will return to one day. and he is loyal to his family and to obi-wan, for saving him. but obi-wan should be loyal to him and him alone. only to the crown. only to anakin.
what im getting at is like. a scene where nineteen year old anakin demands obi-wan swear fealty to him as the king of his planet on the eve of the clone wars because he needs obi-wan to know that he's his. his captain. his guard. kneeling and ring kissing is involved.
obi-wan swearing fealty and then probably fucking anakin and then probably leaving during the night to fight in the clone wars without waking anakin is also involved.
#kit's silly lil aus#obikin#im also thinking that anakin's planet's takeover is phantom menace coded#where sidious orchestrates it#and then when anakin is on coruscant#the chancellor and him become good friends#because surely the chancellor will be able to help him win back control of his planet!#and palpatine is very willing#to help young king anakin#for a price#its a lil bit anastasia au its a little bit game of thrones au#its a lil bit star wars#obiwan is very torn because he’s super loyal to both#and he loves anakin and wants to protect anakin#but this is the Jedi and they’re at war#he ends up letting his guilt over his obvious attachment to the young king win out#and he joins one of the battle units#but he can’t stop thinking about anakin#and for the first time since fleeing the kingdom planet he feels how anakin must have felt#like he’s abandoned his heartland

Let this be a lesson to me. Today I saw a yt short about Strange Magic, and its a scene with Bog King and Dawn. Edited with cutesy music and everything. I foolishly thought they looked so cute, and FOOLISHLY assumed they were the main ship. I then proceeded to find the movie, watch it, and discover, no, they aren't the end-game couple.
Cute movie, the actual couple was nice. BUT DEAR GOD I WAS ROOTING FOR A SHIP THAT WAS NEVER GONNA HAPPEN.
#strange magic#there's no fanfic to remedy my feeling of loss#see I thought the movie was going a whole other direction#like the love potion never worked#and Dawn was actually in love with the Bog King#and that Sunny and Marianne were gonna team up to save Dawn#and gradually fall for each other in their quest to save Dawn#bonding over their respective betrayals/manipulations by Roland#and when they went to go save Dawn#Dawn would remind Marianne of her dream to unite the two kingdoms and explain how it's so possible because she loves the Bog King#But that wasn't the direction at all#kinda deserved because I formed an opinion and expectation off a small clip with no context#Overall was a cute movie tho#local emo woman meets the beast next door
