The Three-Headed Dragon and the Heirs
Tumblr media
Aegon I and his queen-sisters, Visenya and Rhaenys, together with the two princes, Aenys and Maegor. In this family portrait, they are celebrating Maegor's birth and Aegon wanted to include Rhaenys in the picture (it has been 2 years since she was presumed dead).
(This artwork took me months because I lost motivation to finish it 😅)

the thing is: jaehaerys didn't deny daenerys/rhaenys claims (the great council was a scam, he was endorsing viserys) to the throne for the "good of the realm" or only because he thought women can't rule/he didn't want corlys velaryon behind the power. he did it because if a women came upon the throne before her male brother/uncle, he would bring scrutiny over his usurpation of the far better claimant aerea.

The Dragon Heirs
King Aegon I surrounded by his sons, Prince Aenys and little pre-teen Prince Maegor Targaryen.
I almost like it but I gave up trying to fix it. Maybe I've got to change my shading technique next year. My reference was this fashion plate of 10th century Franks.

At this point, I just wish certain individuals in this fandom would read the damn text instead of making nonsensical or false claims about Aegon III’s inheritance because Fire and Blood clearly states that he inherited the throne through Rhaenyra.
Despite her name being erased from the line of succession, King Aegon III is listed as Rhaenyra’s heir, not Aegon II’s, and gets his title from her. As stated by the text, “Aegon III, Rhaenyra’s son”.
Similarily, Viserys I is also listed as King Jaehaerys’ grandson and heir, not Prince Baelon’s son, and Jaehaerys himself was listed as Aenys son and heir, not Maegor the Cruel’s, who reigned before him.
The paradox of the Dance is that although Rhaenyra was not recognized as the Queen, they still rely on her name to crown her son by calling him her heir and placing him in the line of succession.
"History doesn't remember blood, it remembers names," and history sure as hell remembered that Aegon III, Viserys II, and every other Targaryen King descended from Rhaenyra Targaryen.

PRINCE VISERYS TARGARYEN:His highness ordered the cremation of his mother's body, and the bones and ashes were buried next to those of the conqueror. He then sent the royal guard in search of his squire, prince viserys. 'chain him in a black cell and interrogate him without mercy,' he ordered. Ask her where her mother has gone. "' perhaps I don't know, 'I believe to be Owen bush, a knight of the royal guard from maegor. "Then let him die," was the king's famous answer. It may be that the very slut will appear for the funeral."
KING VISERYS I TARGARYEN:Viserys I targaryen was not the most willful of Kings, it is fair to say. Always friendly and eager for complacer, he relied greatly on the advice of the men around him, and did whatever was proposed to him very often. In this case, however, he had ideas of his own and no argument could dissuade him. He would marry again, yes, but not a twelve-year-old maiden, and not for reasons of state; another woman had entered his eyes. He announced his intention to venture with lady alicent of the hightower house, the clever and charming eighteen-year-old daughter of the King, the one who read to king jaehaerys on his deathbed. King viserys loved both his wife and daughter, and hated conflict and strife. All his life he strove to To keep the peace between one and the other and for pleasure to both with gifts, gold and honors; Throughout his existence and reign, he maintained balance; The feasts and tournaments continued as before, and peace prevailed throughout the kingdom. However, there were some horsemen who observed that the dragons of a party threw tarascades and spit fire on the opposition whenever they crossed.
KING VISERYS II TARGARYEN:Viserys received good treatment during his captivity. Although he was forbidden to leave the grounds of the mansion of bambarro, he had his own possessions, he ate with the master and his family, he had instructors who were in charge of seeing him in language, literature, mathematics, history and music, and he even had a master of weapons who taught him fencing, art in the That soon took off. The general belief, although there is no proof, is that bambarro intended to wait for the end of the dragon dance, either to return it to his mother in exchange for a ransom (if rhaenyra was victorious), or to sell his head to his uncle (if the victor was aegon ii).
KING VISERYS III TARGARYEN:The cream and gold will be viserion. Viserys was cruel, weak and cowardly, but he was also my brother. His dragon will do what he could not do. The crown was the only offering he wanted to keep. The rest, he sold everything, to gather the gold he had wasted with the blood. Xaro wanted him to sell the crown as well; He swore that the thirteen would see to it that he had a much better one, but dany forbade him. Viserys sold my mother's crown, and everyone called him a beggar. I will keep this one, and all shall call me queen.

I love the “the gods flip a coin” quote about targs because really it’s not about targs “being closer to gods than men” it’s just the coin flip of monarchy babes it’s just the perpetuation of the dynastic mythology to enforce their legitimacy

The daughter of Aethan Velaryon and Alarra Massey, Alyssa was a graceful yet outspoken woman who accepted her role as a woman but didn’t leave the power to the men.
It was said that she would openly jest at Maegor in court, and later on in her life she became Queen Regent - the ruler of the Seven Kingdoms until Jahaerys came of age.
Alyssa married her cousin, Prince Aenys Targaryen I, the son of Aegon the Conqurer and Rhaenys Targaryen. Although Alyssa and Aenys’ marriage was a political one, they proved to be fruitful. Together, they had six children: Rhaena, Aegon (known as The Uncrowned), Viserys (died at 14 by torture from Maegor), Jaehaerys, Alysanne, and Vaella Targaryen (died in the cradle).
After the death of Aenys, Visenya brought Maegor back from exile to rule. After her husband’s funeral, Alyssa fled to Driftmark with her three youngest children, Viserys, Jaehaerys, and Alysanne. There, she proclaimed her eldest son, Aegon, the true king of Westeros.
Dowager Queen Visenya eventually traveled to Driftmark and convinced Alyssa to return to court for the wedding between Maegor and Tyanna of the Tower. Alyssa, along with her children, were present for the ceremony. And Alyssa even took part in the bedding ceremony.
However, Alyssa’s presence brought forward rumours that she favoured Maegor over Aegon. That she abandoned her son’s cause.
When Visenya died, the chaos allowed an opportunity for Alyssa to escape with Jaehaerys, Alysanne as well as Dark Sister. Visenya's Valyrian steel sword, from the dead Dowager Queen's chambers. Although, Viserys was left behind, and in revenge Maegor tortured his nephew to death.
Viserys’ body was left in the Red Keep, in the hopes that Alyssa would return for the body. She did not.
After continuously on the move, Alyssa and her two youngest children landed in Storm’s End. Rogar Baratheon protected them, and he proclaimed Jaehaerys to be the true and lawful king of the Seven Kingdoms.
Suddenly, Maegor died and the circumstances remain mysterious even now. Nine days after his death, Jaehaerys came to King’s Landing on the back of Vermithor, and a few days after that Alyssa, along with Rogar and his army followed.
Alyssa was Queen Regent until Jahaerys turned sixteen. She married Rogar, who became Hand of the King and she gave him two children: a son and a daughter. However, she died during the second birth - the same way Aemma Arryn and so many other women died. Forced c-section, although they did not have a term for it.

Aenys I Targaryen was sadly really short-sighted
If Aenys had been wiser and seen things as they were, how things played out between his brother and aunt with him, and his children and wife, would have been completely different.
Dragonstone belonged to Maegor, even if Maegor was a second son he was the firstborn son of Queen Visenya - one of the Conquerors - as well as the son of the first sister-wife of Aegon I The Conqueror. The Conqueror's marriage with Rhaenys had been considered valid due to them marrying before the Conquest in a Valyrian wedding before converting, as well as using their dragons.
If Aenys really wanted to give his son's claim more legitimacy then:
First, Aenys should have given his son Aegon a keep of his own in the West, as it seemed that is where Aegon had most of his support, as well as a small castle in Driftmark, in any case they would need the royal presence on the island as the Velaryons had a lot of connections to the Targaryens as Alyssa Velaryon had Targaryen blood on both sides of her parents as her father Aethan and grandfather Daemon had Targaryen mothers, also, maybe Daemon dying in the Gullet with fire may have made his blood descendants stronger; that way Aenys would not have messed with Maegor's inheritance and Visenya would not have felt humiliated; and also send Aegon on more tourneys and missions so the common folk could have seen Aegon was strong and decisive
Second, Aenys should have not given Blackfyre to Maegor, he should have given it to Aegon, and given another sword of Valyrian Steel to Maegor, giving Blackfyre to Maegor just made people think Aenys was weak and that Maegor was the real heir to the Iron Throne, giving his claim validity which Maegor used after Aenys' death to ask for a combat trial in which he proves his worth as king.
Third, rather than a journey in which Aegon and Rhaena were without their dragons, Aenys should have seen the discontent coming and allowed Rhaena to bring Dreamfyre and use Quicksilver to create the Doctrine of Exceptionalism earlier.

Fashion ask: I just know Aenys would wear Dumbledore like cloaks. Light blue and covered in stars, faded purple/lilac with the constellations, silver to match with his dragon. Maegor would obvi only wear black and red. My girl Rowan def is a pastel girly but dark green looks gorge with her hair.

what do you think daeron ii was like as a dad? i feel like maekar's inferiority complex needs to come from somewhere and targs aren't exactly known for breaking cycles, lol . . .
Loll you are kinda right there- honestly for my vision of Daeron it’s like….. he’s not a GREAT dad, honestly not really all that good either, but the thing is he was trying. Or more, tried.
For one, he was probably an amazing dad to Baelor specifically- during his own dad’s reign, he would’ve had a lot more time to be around his sons, and seeing as Baelor’s the oldest, that would’ve been the majority of his childhood! Maekar meanwhile was really young, so he likely only got a few years before Daeron was made king and spent the other half of his childhood being kinda second priority.
But- yaknow- I imagine when you’re put in charge of a whole realm and want to fix the irreversible damage done by your predecessor, you also don’t have that much time to be a dad to your kids (aka duty over love yadayada). And, seeing as Maekar wasn’t his dad’s heir, and seemingly not able to bond with Daeron over any specific activities, I can imagine he and maybe his other brothers would’ve felt very neglected and, as you said yourself, made way for one hell of an inferiority complex lol
