i prefer happy ending bbc merlin where morgana becomes court sorceress and arthur becomes king and merlin remains as his servant (until they eventually marry) and lancelot lives and he and gwen marry but that damn game of thrones (?? probably idk) audio on tiktok that goes “i mean to fight this war and win it.” “good. to war then.” keeps giving me visions of king arthur of camelot on the verge of war with other kingdoms and his powerful court sorcerer merlin standing by his throne. arthur declares that he wishes to go to war and merlin (eager to bring about the united albion the prophecies speak of) supports arthur immediately and declares they’re going to war
#their plan isn't to conquer and beat the other kingdoms into submission#but some kingdoms like essetir and deorham will not go willingly so war will be waged there#but mostly the plan is to make the current kings and queens sorts of lords and ladies#like nemeth and gawant#mithian and elena can keep their power over their kingdoms but they must sign a treaty of sorts#one that outlines that they recognize arthur as the high king and that his word is law#they can make rulings and laws but if arthur disagrees then he can do away with their decision#sort of like federal vs local goverment#bbc merlin#merlin emrys#arthur pendragon#merthur

It is not pretended that these laws and customs existed in England in the sixth century; no, it is only pretended that inasmuch as they existed in the English and other civilizations of far later times, it is safe to consider that it is no libel upon the sixth century to suppose them to have been in practice in that day also. One is quite justified in inferring that whatever one of these laws or customs was lacking in that remote time, its place was competently filled by a worse one.
You know what, Mark Twain? That's fair.

a possible arthur design for this story? i've had some trouble with him. i don't want him to look so different from canon arthur that it's not clear who he is, but i really like the idea of him having a beard. my arthur also has a different body type, he's shorter than merlin but not too short, and he's a lot fatter and hairier (partially because i think that makes him hotter, lol) - i like his design so far and i think it works with the blend of arthuriana and bbc merlin canon that this project is meant to emulate.
my friend suggested arthur with a ring of gold in his eyes to match merlin (and the flag of camelot) and i thought that was very fun! i think it works best for an older arthur once magic has been returned to camelot... here's my rendition of that concept!
any thoughts?
#edit: AH i forgot to add the chest/arm hair#he starts out the story with just a bit of scruff and ends it with a full beard. i think he grew the beard by accident during some sort of#event and he decided to keep it and then he just never changed. his nature means he loves consistency so he never really changes his hair.#he tries it shorter he tries it longer it just doesn't fit him 🤷♂️#the bit about him being hotter is just meant to be a body positive joke in a lighthearted sense i don't just view fat people through that#<- lens i'm normal#my last post works as a reference for very early in the story arthur before he grows a beard#it would be by like. end of season 1.#fun fact: he broke his nose once and it never healed right#once and future; a bbc merlin rewrite#my posts#art posts#merlin#bbc merlin#merlin bbc#adventures of merlin#arthur pendragon#prince arthur#king arthur#arthuriana#arthurian legend#arthurian mythology#arthurian retelling#art#fanart

Imp, have you seen the Pretty Pretty Please I Don’t Want To Be A Magical Girl pilot? If you have, I’m curious to know your thoughts on it because I don’t really know what you’d think of it. I know you hate when stories mock its tropes, but I feel the pilot intends to use the jokes for theme, which I know you appreciate. It also has set-up for a main queer black couple as opposed to the in-universe one-sided ship between the blorbo-bait white guy as a bonus LOL. Hope you have a good day!
I have!
I think it's a super cute pilot—the voice direction and a lot of the comedy isn't for me (kinda reminds me of of SvTFOE or TOH, which the creator works at Disney so that checks out), but that's totally just preference rather than a fault of the show. I respect what they're trying to do, it definitely doesn't feel like it's "mocking" the magical girl genre at all! I think my real issue is when a piece of media lacks sincerity, which PPPIDWTBAMG (does. the fandom have a better acronym) has plenty of. It's a fine deconstruction, and that "magical girl de-transformation' is just smart.
Obviously love a main queer black couple, they're goofy and fun (and feel arospec to me), and I love that the white boy is chasing after the black girl. It's just nice to see
"Blorbo-bait white guy" is fucking KILLING me
#a notification popped up in the corner of my screen informing me that ''blorbo-bait white guy'' has been added to my vocabulary#''the curve is FUCKED'' cracked me up#anon#asks#also apparently the better acronym for the show is#IDWTBAMG#tbh. This show isn't really within my tastes (horror ToH flashbacks) but I see why people like it#and I'd give it a chance#I don't think it'd get as dark/intense as I'd want it to but also like. Not my project right#My brain jumps to ''oh cool so she doesn't want this responsibility. What does she do now that it's apart of her and she has it''#Which. Thinking on it I just want MK LMAOOOOOOOOOOO#MK. My favorite magical girl#Like Aika hates this and she's also the only one who can fulfill this role right. I wanna know that impact#And would she choose her own happiness over everything else#And should she be expected to not do that#Like okay. I've been watching fate zero recently right#And in it Saber (aka female King Arthur) has a dream so big. And has shouldered so much that she's basically depraved herself#like ''there are those who were born human but harbor wishes that man was not meant for...and have renounced their humanity in its pursuit'#Like. She feels that as a King she must give up her right to be a person. To want for herself. To dream for herself#so much so that she must spend all of her existence reaching for an unreachable dream to fix an unfixable mistake#And I fucking love that#So like. Aika at her most interesting to me would be a sort of MK Saber fusion with self-worth/an identity outside their role#and that's just probably not the goal#The goal is more focusing on passion and what losing that love looks like#Which is cool. But overall kinda boring to me as like a Singular Theme#Cause I doubt there'd be much more than that right#Which isn't bad by any means. just not my preference#This thing should exist—as is—too for people to enjoy it#I can eat my popcorn somewhere else

post magic reveal, post magic ban lifted, arthur gets to see merlin in all his glory and somehow falls deeper in love with him than he ever thought possible. merlin who is free and accepted and loved and ecstatic by it all, but there's that thought lingering in the back of his mind that only half of their destiny has been fulfilled. magic has returned to camelot but albion is still fractured in many different kingdoms, many of which are still holding onto the hate that uther spread which is seeping into the very fabric of the earth itself. druids and magic users and even magic creatures are still persecuted all across the realm and yeah camelot opened her arms to them but not everyone trusts it (justifiably).
arthur who is choking on the sheer amount of love he has for merlin and promising himself that he'll tell merlin, he'll confess, even if he feelings aren't reciprocated. merlin will know. merlin who has been chewing on an idea for some time now and is planning on bringing it up to arthur. its night as merlin is dressing arthur for bed and they're both quiet and tense. they break at the same time and end up speaking over one another. arthur allows merlin to go first since his nerves are eating away at him. then merlin speaks of leaving.
arthur feels his nerves rot and decay and fall into a bottomless pit. merlin is rambling about how every magical being in albion is still being targeting by various kingdoms and as the prophesied emrys, magic incarnate, druid king, should he not be doing more to help? he doesn't want to leave arthur's side, but he does want to help his people. he's seen only a fraction of the atrocities committed against them and he wishes to protect them, give them somewhere completely safe, a kingdom of magic so to speak. he promises that he'll only be gone for as long as it takes to establish a kingdom (a year? two? three?) but he promises to write and visit often...as long as arthur gives him permission and allows him to leave his service for the time being.
arthur of course agrees, half unhappy about it but completely understanding. surely, out of everyone, he is the one who can understand the weight of responsibility weighing on merlin's shoulders. he mentions that merlin will need someone with experience wearing the crown to guide him. plus, balance. merlin was always there for arthur, guiding him on how to be a better man, a great king, someone worthy of the praise he constantly spewed. it's only right that arthur gets to return that by helping merlin establish a safe haven and home for his people. and politically, camelot being the first kingdom to recognize merlin's and establish some trade agreement or treaty with them will strengthen merlin's kingdom's status and send a message that camelot stands with magic.
merlin smiles wide and asks what arthur was going to say. the king hesitates before biting his tongue and requesting that merlin bring up the honey cakes that had been prepared earlier that night. two of them. since merlin was no longer in his service, he didn't have to stand by and watch arthur eat - not that he ever did, the idiot loved to steal his food. shamelessly!! he never even tried to hide it. they both sat at the table in his chambers until late in the night, nibbling away at the sweets, chasing it down with wine, and chatting away.
arthur wasn't able to confess, but it did not change his feelings. if anything, merlin's heart and the decision he made only added fuel to the raging inferno of love and devotion within arthur. he knows that merlin will keep in contact and will return to his side one day. he gets through the tough days/nights by rereading merlin's letters and imagining seeing him again in royal garb and donning a crown.
#when they finally wed it completely solidifies that camelot is a safe space for magical beings#camelot and whatever name merlin settled on for his kingdom sort of merge together with the marriage as well#which is only the beginning to the prophesied unified albion that they were meant to build together#i just think that merlin shouldve built something for his people#like theyre being prosecuted at every turn#theres no safe place for any of them to reside#theyre always looking over their shoulder#merlin aka emrys aka magic itself should've looked out for his people#his devotion to arthur got in the way of that tho which ig is romantic but also like bro. cmon now.#plus king merlin>>>>#bbc merlin#merlin emrys#arthur pendragon#merthur#angst sort of#its a happy ending if you read my tags LMAO#fic ideas#fanfic#fanfiction#headcanon#head canon#hc

I made fanart for Malevolent!
I drew John as I picture him in some nebulous future/AU where he's still himself, but also at full King in Yellow power again if that makes sense.
(Also, Arthur is actually in this one too, try to find him!)

#I based his “mask” on a barn owl because John gives me owl vibes#and i say this as someone who has spent time around owls#I put "mask' in quotations because it's his face/a faceplate#Also his two cloak buttons are stylized stars#malevolent fanart#malevolent#john malevolent#john doe malevolent#King in yellow malevolent#sort of#malevolent podcast#arthur and john malevolent#john doe

Continuing my Arthurian concepts, Lancelot of the Lake (I wanted it to be Lancelot du Lac, but alas, it looked really bad on his sheet, with the fancy font and all). As I did with Arthur, we have Lancelot and his sword - again, I just have a thing for designing fancy swords :')
His whole concept is blue, because you know... Of the Lake. Child of Avalon. It had to be blue hahaha every detail on his sword/armour is to look like plants, fountains and water.
I also wanted his sword to have that ~clashing~ of fluid like fountain shapes and rectangular, harsh line shapes because even if he is water, he is also constant in his loyalty, beliefs and is someone you can rely on.
(oh I told you guys I have some hot takes regarding Lancelot, Guinevere and all that... 'TIS LOTTIE TIME NOW)
Also did the whole ~testing Photoshop layers thing~ again and, lo and behold, we have some vitral looking version of Lancelot. It can also be him during one of the rituals in Avalon, who knows ;)

More ramblings on my version of Lancelot, what I thought during his design, who he is to me as a character and why he has that insufferable smug smile, under the cut below hahahaha
(fangirling? yes, fangirling over arthurian legend, yee been warned)
First things first: YES, Ioan Gruffud.
I fell in love with Lancelot because of him in the 2005 King Arthur movie and that is FOREVER the vision I have of Lancelot, this man has SINGLE-HANDEDLY made me believe he is a loyal friend and a little shit at the same time and there is NO room for another Lancelot in my mind.
I fucking love him so much
The 2005 movie is one of my favourite versions (I was 13 when I first watched it, he was my teenage crush, I'll love it to death) - but it does leave a lot of the characters out to create a whole other story on its own. I love it, but there's so much more on Arthurian Legend we can work on!
My Lancelot, then: yes, prince of Benoic. Taken by Avalon, raised by the Lady of the Lake, ruthless in combat. Best Knight of the Round Table, could even be better than Arthur (some say), and fiercely loyal to his companions and commander.
One hell of a womanizer, though. This man can't see a good looking woman - or even man, for that matter - without starting to flirt and say some things that would make even the gods flush. Everyone laughs while Galahad wants to die every single time Lancelot's flirty mode is ON.
Pretty useful when they have more stealthy missions that require lying, deception and cheating - be it men or women, Lancelot's charm will NEVER fail.
(other more "brutish" Knights, so to speak, say it's his Avalon ✨ pixie charm ✨ - and really, the man doesn't disagree)
Even if he is very loyal to his friends, brothers in arms, and his beloved Arthur, he can't be like that in romances, though. Lancelot's love is a quick flame that burns down an entire forest in the blink of an eye and it's put out quickly with a heavy rain the day after, while Arthur's love is a lingering fire on a winter night, keeping his lovers warm and away from harm as long as it has wood or coal to burn.
That's why I chose to give Lancelot a more reliable look with all the rectangular shapes, constant stripes and more of a "bulky" look compared to Arthur (Arthur has more of a slim-strong constitution). But he also has some sharp points, because of how dangerous he is, and the ever flowing shapes of the water of Avalon - like his very flowy dark blue cape.
He's always covered in blood too. He is the best Knight, he has no problems when it comes to killing, and he doesn't have Arthur's moral compass. If he has to be ruthless, he will be.
(told ya this man lives rent free in my head)
And that's very important to his character, in my opinion. Lancelot is a pagan, he doesn't mind bloodshed, and he certainly has no issues with giving in to lust and earthly pleasures. There is no Heaven to judge him, and no Hell to burn him. He is fatally human. Not trying to be better and to go on a moral high horse when his hands are covered in blood and his only talent is death - just surviving his times as he can.
HENCE - and brace yourselves for hot take time! - why he loves Guinevere, but he's in NO WAY a better man than Arthur. He would stop his flirting and womanizing shenanigans for her, but WHY would she give up someone so absurdly upstanding and unreal like Arthur for him? And he doesn't want her to. She deserves better than him. He loves being around her, his heart aches, but how many hearts hasn't he broken? It's kind of a poetic justice sort of thing in his view.
And he wouldn't sleep with her, not when she loves Arthur and Arthur loves her so fucking much. He might be a little shit, yes, sassy, bitter, hedonistic and even annoying at times - but he is loyal. He doesn't love easy, and when he does, he loves hard. And he loves Arthur too much to do the one thing that would destroy the man he would give his life for.
He's a bastard, but he does have standards. A bastard with feelings :)
Jokes aside, this is, again, MY take on Lancelot. MY Lancelot, is all fun and games, will argue religion with every single catholic/christian he meets on his way, will get covered in blood during battle, will kill with no remorse, will drink with no remorse, will indulge in sex and break hearts with no remorse.
But he will give his life for his friends - he will sacrifice everything for those he loves, and his loyalty can never be bought - for in the end of the day, if he's lying on the grass choking in his own blood, he knows those are the ones who would come to his aid. He knows Arthur would rather die for him than watch him die - even if Lancelot thinks this would be the utmost stupid-est and unfairest thing to ever do.
The world deserves and needs an Arthur in it - not a Lancelot.
In my Arthurian Legend, this is his character, this is who he is. A lot more darkness and existential dread, pleasures and adrenaline rushes in battle to cover up how flawed he thinks he is - even if bards sing of his heroic feats, his reputation is that of a hero and women everywhere swoon upon hearing his name, painting him as a knight in shining armour.
He's not - he's a womanizer in a blood stained armour, pledging his killing skills to someone who has a better, idealistic view of the world and higher moral standards than him.
If you read all of this, thank you for coming to my TED Talk, and do know I suffered immensily not making him a dual-wielding killing powerhouse.

Do you think some Mikado citizens ever figured out they could get their original works published as long as they threw King Aquila in there somewhere? And how much of it was actually fanfiction about Aquila, Mikado's state-designated blorbo? It'd be really funny if Aquila also got "and he'll return in Mikado's darkest hour" like King Arthur. Like technically he did!
@thonkphonk
OK......... THE FAERIE QUEENE IS AN INTEREST OF MINE. I read Books 3 and 4 for a class called 'Violence and Romance in Renaissance Literature'. We spent a lot of time on it, because iirc the only other thing we read in the class at all was some Shakespeare. So it was actually mostly a class on the Faerie Queen books 3 and 4 lol (and all of my papers were on the Faerie Queene instead of Shakespeare lol).
The whole deal with the Faerie Queene is that the titular Queene is the goal of King Arthur's quest, and yet Arthur himself only has cameos in the stories because he is the 'main plot' where all the books have different main characters (and focuses on elaborating on various virtues that each main knight upholds--Arthur is the perfect knight, who extols all virtues, whereas all the characters in the books exist to define specific virtues--ex: Britomart represents Chastity, Artegall represents Justice, etc). And Spenser never actually finished the Faerie Queene, which is why Arthur's quest never gets full attention.
To apply this to SMTIV would be extremely fun.
Absolutely I could see so many stories about King Aquila's times. Especially since Mikado is trapped in this sort of medieval stone-age ('holy times' as viewed by angels) so its not even like stories about Aquila would be dated, it would be so easy to write stories of modern times with Aquila present. Or, even easier, would be his inclusion in these 'fairy-stories' the Luxurors know.
Aquila means so much to people despite having lived so long ago, I would assume his knights are known the same way Arthur's are (with people inventing new knights all the time, as with Arthurian legends as well). So people would toss Aquila into all this often while writing their own stories about the various knights (with a focus on those knights because, like Arthur's presentation in the Faerie Queene, Aquila would be the 'perfect' character, meaning that the stories are more interesting if they can be about the flaws of the others).
But 100% Aquila would always come in to save the day, or to approve of the resolution the story reaches, etc. I am so on board with that idea.
That being said, this would mean the angels likely erase much of this when they take over Mikado, Aquila' name remains on the Obelisk, but his statue is destroyed, so I imagine many of these books are just straight up burned. A few would survive though, less objectionable ones, but the angels hate the influence Aquila still has on the people, and how he is still venerated.
Also you are SO RIGHT about the 'once and future' thing. Like. This has no support in the game because the game is so nebulous about Nanashi's birth, but I do somewhat theorize he was born in Mikado? He's literally just found in Sky Tower, so I'm like, okay was he born there and brought down somehow? I would KILL to know anything about this because like. Ok, they found a baby. How did they find him? In the hands of a demon, dead humans, or just like, on the ground? Hello? Can I have some information please?
But I've always assumed Nanashi was born in Mikado and then SOMETHING was a reason for him to be carried below, and then discovered. Because like. we don't even know why the HUNTERS were in Sky Tower--most people knew about Medusa back then and wouldn't want to go, and people even assume Medusa works for Tayama (which is false--I theorize she worked for Akira but that isn't confirmed anywhere). but if people just assumed the Sky Tower was controlled by the Ashura-kai, I don't know why anyone would approach--they KNOW Medusa kills everyone up there.
and Nanashi of course is randomly discovered after Medusa is there, he's only born well after Akira establishes Mikado, so the Hunters have long-withdrawn from Sky Tower and like. what. is happening.
But yeah a prophecy about Aquila's return and somehow that also including the need for Nanashi to go below rather than above, there's some sect of people somewhere that know something, this is just, one of those many holes left open in the SMTIV world. so we are free to make theories and headcanons and I am so with it.
Thank you for sending this, this was so fun omg. I went on a bit of a ramble.
#shitpost#ok sorry you unlocked faerie queene excitement there#i have books 3 and 4 in one collection on my bookshelf#also Spenser never finished the Faerie Queene like. king shit really.#Arthur's quest is just ongoing background to the rest of everything#also. the Faerie Queene was written as a sort of weird funky fan letter to Queen Elizabeth with SO many allegories and references to her#and like its implied Britomart is directly related to her and like theres so much going on like. there's a layer of analysis here#of like. Spenser was totally a bit in love with his patron and here's an interpretation of Faerie Queene with that lens#it was one of the points we discussed a LOT in the class but it isn't one I looked into too deeply#I was too focused on Britomart and Chastity themes. and Amoret and Scudamour and just all that's happening in Book 3 and Book 4#also if you take why the Faerie Queene was written and apply that to SMTIV that means like#someone is in love with the current King and is just dedicating this fairy-story style poem about Aquila to him lol#OK IM DONE RAMBLING#also putting this in my#smtiv replay#tag though

I have a... personal difficulty towards the reactions of lay-persons/people-with-surface-knowledge-about-arthuriana towards arthurian lore.
Its like... whenever someone complains that "Lancelot shouldn't betrayed his best friend Arthur!" "He should have stayed away from Guinevere!" "He's evil for ruining a healthy marriage"
And I have to refrain from trying to lecture that someone about the realities and nuances of Arthuriana and to defend Lancelot's character and his nature as a character. Especially when the pop-image of King Arthur as a "Did Nothing Wrong" guy rears its head.
I'm like, Dude
Lancelot and Arthur aren't even best friends, like you assume.
Arthur and Guinevere are not a happy couple with a modern-style marriage.
And Lancelot, as a character, fundamentally cannot be NOT Guinevere's lover. He exists for that very purpose for a (doylist) reason.
There is no simple answer for Arthuriana and its long and evolving history. There are complex and often independent explanations, both watsonian and doylist, for why things are in the world of Camelot.
#just had a run in with that sort of person online#as someone with enthusiasm for this genre#its both frustrating and awkward#arthuriana#sir lancelot#king arthur#queen guinevere#my thoughts#oc

Today I, an aromantic, was getting ready to attend a wedding… with Stranger on repeat.
#the mechanisms#stranger#ttbt2#i knew what i was doing when i put it on but also i am working on an addtion to my brian-jonny foils post so i was thinking about brian#its always sad brian hours#i cant really read that song separate from him anymore. honestly not sure i ever could but. its just so unconnected from anything else.-#actaea and lyssa is pretty disconnected. but its still almost certainly on the city. alice is pretty disconnected but its a result of-#king cole’s war. the most disconnected songs are redeath. the ignominious demise of dr pilchard. drop dead. hereward the wake. and stranger-#(and frankenstein but i consider that its own thing). and redeath and drop dead are my least favorite mechs songs.dr pilchard i didnt-#really care for for quite a while. stranger has so few words in it. it’s my favorite song. but the story is minimal fron the song (ie w/o-#knowing the crane wife story) so making a story around it sort of makes sense? im having a hard time with the words here. like we expect a-#story. cause that’s what the mechs do. and stranger has a story. it just doesnt have context and so creatong that context for ourselves is-#understandable. to be expected even. hope that makes sense#side note: i think it would make sense for hereward to have been from the same place (system I guess) as the people that made-#fort galfridian. i mean hereward was more of a real person than arthur (since there was no one person arthur was based on. like thats a-#whole thing) and hereward was anglo-dutch. so it makes sense hed be related to that story somehow#its just a theory. obviously. theres nothing in the songs connecting the too as far as im aware.#OH also achilles pointed out to me the anti-amatonormative/aromantic reading of stranger and i liked that a lot#hereward was anglo-danish. not anglo-dutch. sorry danish and dutch people
