Please oh please share with us how you did the effect in your latest Nancy drew set, it is truly so gorgeous I cannot stop looking at it!

hi nonny, sorry this took a while. so you're looking for the effect from this post:

i made it fairly easy on myself for this one because i am lazy and impatient as hell, so hopefully this is a rather short tutorial.

there's a neater and tidier way to do this that would require frames instead of timeline but for the effect i was aiming for, the slightly sloppier and faster way actually worked fine.

preparation: you'll need a gif with the overlay effect that you like and want to use. i'm giving you the one i used for all the gifs in this set (just slightly altered for each individual gif):

then, of course, you need two gifs — one that'll be your base gif (the coloured one in my example) and one that'll "bleed into" the other one (the black and white one here).

base gif: i just did my regular preparation and colouring, added some yellow and red brush strokes here and there to add some colour and that was it.

i also added some text at this point and i positioned it on top of my base gif but underneath the overlay layers (because i wanted the text to vanish with the overlay):

second gif: i did a quick and very basic black and white colouring for this one.

for the overlay effect to work properly, i set the blending mode of this gif to multiply.

overlay: now the fun part. i added my overlay effect gif and changed its size and position to my liking and so that the important parts of my base gif were visible long enough (aka the kiss).

i set this layer to screen and clipped the b/w gif and the adjustment layers to it.

the thing is, as you can see, the overlay part is way too transparent to be efficient. you might get away with this if your base gif is dark enough but for the scene i wanted to use as a base it just didn't look right.

so i duplicated the overlay effect layer, dragged it underneath my original one, inverted it and set it to darken. et voilà, this worked wonders:

before saving, have a look at your timeline and whether everything lines up. you can change the starting point of your overlay effect (having it come in later or earlier) or your other gifs. whatever looks right to you and also fits into the size limitation.

when the two of you start dating the staring doesn’t stop either, it’s more that since your his now he doesn’t only have to look he could grab it whenever he wants. all of the time, like in the morning when your fixing something to eat in your oversized shirt and panties, he would come up behind you grabbing at your waist, breast just touching all over you. all the places he used to only stare at and have uncontrollable thoughts of becoming his was a great feeling. he also doesn’t care for the pda, wanting to show off what’s his in her pretty outfits. and he definitely doesn’t mind when you do it too, he loves when you grab his biceps and hold them or just admire chest. he loves all parts of you, all the pink, the fashion — he’s just glad to have his pretty girl in his life.

Hi Nonnie! I'm sorry you feel this way, but I think I was pretty clear in my warnings that this one was gonna be rough. I had "angst (with an eventual happy ending)" right there at the front and as this was a part one posted in the last 48 hours, I think it was pretty clear that that happy ending wasn't gonna come anytime soon.

Also, in my author's note I said "Well, this is for all of you who thought you'd seen the worst angst I could possibly do. Sorry for how much this one's gonna hurt!" Which was another sign that this might not be for you.

My guess is that you're new to my blog (in which case, hi! Welcome!) but angst is pretty much what I do here. I'm thinking I might not be the writer for you. Which is fine! I don't expect everyone to like me or my stories. Just like I would hope that you don't expect to like everything that's put out into the world. Realizing that not everything is for you is a freeing thing. But it also means that you need to take the care to discern what's not for you and avoid those things to take care of yourself.

Sorry, one last thing. For whatever reason, your use of the term 'aftercare' is really sticking in my craw. You and I are not engaged in any sort of intimate relationship. There hasn't been any negotiation. We don't have safe words. I'm not sure what exactly you think I owe you, except for the warnings I've already provided. If you need some intense fluff after reading something hard, the good news is that you're on a website full of it! It is there for you to find. There's even some on my masterlist, in between all the angst.

The scream from a voice you knew better than anyone else woke you from your half-sleep. It had been sudden and without a word pronounced.

“While you were sleeping I saw a shooting star!” Theo said as he turned his gaze to the sky. You two were alone lying in a large meadow on the ridge of a mountain, far away from everyone, and stargazing on New Year’s Eve. While everyone was celebrating at parties, you and Theo had preferred to spend the evening in the mountains challenging each other in a senseless competition to see who could find the most shooting stars - a bit like a wish for the resolutions of 2025.

“I was resting my eyes, and I glimpsed it too. So we’re even.” you lied.

Theo - competitive as he was - not believing your words had turned towards you and had come dangerously close, mumbling something. However, you were too busy with his lips moving to comprehend what he was saying.

You glanced back to the sky to avoid raising suspicions, but you could still feel his eyes on you.

"I like it here. It's peaceful and there's no one," you said to distract him and stop thinking.

"It's the place of my heart." he replied. If words could taste, you could have sworn that these words tasted of something sweet.

“I feel like place resonates with you.”

After this statement of yours, you felt a smile appear on his face, just as the wind rose and moved the treetops as if nature was witnessing that sudden movement of the boy’s soul.

“It resonates with me, huh?”

You nodded, and he just nodded at you back.

Now you were looking at the sky, and everything around you continued to remind you of Theo. The more you tried not to think about him, the more your mind went back to him. You tried to squint your eyes and look more carefully at the sky, but even in those constellations, you saw his face again.

However, you were still gazing up at the sky... or so you thought.

Even while you believed that your attention was still on the stars, you had actually turned to face him.

And he was still looking at you, and again your eyes met and neither of you dared to move. His eyes were now a reflection of the stars you were seeing in the sky.

Only the light of the stars sparkled on his skin, and you still managed to notice every detail of his face. His pinkish lips were slightly parted, and his dark black hair fell on his forehead.

While you were mesmerized watching him you heard his loud voice, and for the second time, you abruptly returned to the real world. It was Theo again, who was now turned towards the sky with his arm covering the blush on his face.

“What? Did you see another shooting star?”

“More or less” he answered after a few seconds of silence.

And again a gust of wind shook the treetops and sent shivers through your entire body.

“And what did you wish for?”

“I can't say it or it doesn’t come true” he answered, turning back towards you.

“Mmh that's fair.”

And after that, no one dared to say any more words, maybe because no one wanted to interrupt those moments... But as the minutes went by, your thoughts became cloudy, as though you had been drunk by an unplanned spell.

And you were more aware of your approaching closeness the more you thought about it. Your legs were touching, your entire body turned toward one other, and your faces were so close that you could almost feel his breathing. “I like being here with you” he whispered suddenly, as if it was a thought not born to be spoken. He had never been so quiet, you thought.

“Theo, what did you say? I didn't understand”

“I like” he repeated.

“ You like what?”

And he was silent again.

This time, however, you were the one who had brought about the silence. As if pushed by the wind, you reached his face and quickly kissed him. Immediately he kissed you back and came a little closer to you, keeping you together so close for a little longer.

“It was that difficult huh?” he had even dared to say after endlessly moments.

“Shut up” you answered him giggling.

You blushed at the unexpected compliment and he took the opportunity to tease you a little more.

hi nonny, thanks for the nice words! really appreciated. ♥️ so, you're looking for this grid effect:

you're starting off with two gifs. i'd recommend choosing scenes that are not too close up because otherwise they'll overlap too much and you won't be able to delete enough parts to make the most of this effect.

so, here's my base gif that i just did in black and white with some minor purple brush strokes set to screen:

i then chose my second gif and coloured it with a purple gradient map and a purple colour fill set to multiply. the colouring of the gifs is entirely up to you and what you think looks best. so here's my second gif, still without the grid:

this is where the fun part starts - the grid layout. i created that with a new guide layout. this is a super neat tool in photoshop that helps you align shapes or selections on your image. the guide lines basically float over it and help you set up symmetric shapes or layouts. you can define how many columns and rows you want to have and then photoshop creates the guide layout for you. for this gif i chose 4 columns and 4 rows:

with this set up, i started creating the rectangles to make the purple gif visible on top of the black and white one. this is my final layout for my shapes:

you can move around the shapes to your liking and what works best with your gifs. i didn't want to cover too much of my base gif but also tried to make their faces in the top gif all be in the gif as much as possible.

this step is just a lot of moving around your shapes and seeing what looks good tbh.

i then grouped my shapes and clipped my top gif (including all layers for the colouring) to my shapes group:

looking good so far. the only thing missing are the lines for the grid. this is where your guide layout comes in again. i just reopened it and then traced the guide lines with my line tool to create the white grid overlay:

(for editing purposes i turned all of the line layers into a single smart object at the end. this is why you only see one layer for all the lines in this screenshot.)

finally, i used a gaussian blur (0,5 px radius, 100% fill for the filter, 40% fill for the overall layer) on the smart layer to make the lines a little bit smoother and softer looking. this is totally optional and again, up to what looks best to you.

I don’t even know where to start. Actually taking the screenshots I try to make the certain vibes for my game, that really inspires me to take a pictures a certain way.... Sometimes you just have to stop yourself and enjoy of gameplay, without looking around at what others are doing.

Anyways biggest contributor to the quality of my screens is reshade, additionally I use the SRWE and I just mess around with the editing in photoshop settings until I find something i'm satisfied with. At the end I add a film dust overlay. Also lighting mods makes a huge difference. If you are interested in what I personally use check my resources page.

now onto your question! that's some good food for thought uhhhh i can try to estimate?? its been a while but i shld have some rough ideas abt each that i can share! the time frame each comic/panel takes is highly dependent on WHAT kind of comic it is. i hv two kinds of comics I usually do: 1) full-length, and 2) goofy/4koma.

i have a few full-length comics laying about in my archive, but my most recent one/best example is Ghosts which was around uh.... 7 pages excluding the bonus panels! in terms of the process, i usually divide it into 5 stages:

Drafting: this is either the fastest stage OR the slowest depending entirely whether i know what im doing LMAO,, if i have a set idea for what i want to happen, i might get drafts done in a few hours, but if i flounder, it can take a few days 🤔

Lineart: relatively simple enough once i hv the draft down, so id say anything ranging from an hour to half a day if theres nothing else going on irl

Block colouring (main actors): there are DEFINITELY easier and more professional ways to do this with mass-selection and the lasso fill/bucket tool, but idk how to do that on SAI (my art program) so i colour everything by hand HAHA which makes the process longer.... half a day to a day?

Shading: THE WORST!!! definintely my least favourite bc i find it tedious due to all the details/prettification of elves that i am legally obliged to pour into this stage 😭😭 as a result, it can take days!!!

Background + Lighting + Final Rendering: similar to the previous stage haha it just depends on how much effort i wanna put into the final product looking nice. roughly a few days? it kind of meshes with stage 4 anyways haha

just for fun, i hope this process gif for page 6 can illustrate that 👇

these are just rough estimates, bc all in all, the time it takes so finish a page is really dependent on how free I am hahaha. Also, I usually work on full-length comics like Ghost which have more than one page all at once, which means I drafted all 7 pages at once, then did the lineart for all 7 pages at once, coloured at once, shaded rendered bla bla bla 😚 iirc, i think it took me 11 days in total to finish Ghosts before the end of June last year!

For goofy/4-koma, its usually just one page with less detailed/more cartoonish/chibi character styles so it takes a day or two days at most! again, it all boils down to how free i am hehe

YEAH SORRY THIS ENDED UP BEING AN INFO DUMP but thank you so much again for asking and letting me ramble! <3 i ended up having a lot of fun looking back on my drafts n thinking back on my processes.... theres defininitely room for improvement, but thats another worry for another day heheh 😎

I completely agree with you in that there are many bad faith interpretations of tommy and buck and tommy’s relationship. I don’t know if this one I’m about to share would necessarily be a bad faith interpretation but I’d like your take on it. In the scene where buck comes out to eddie, eddie says to buck “this changes nothing between us” and buck responds with something along the lines of “uh good, that’s a relief”. I’ve seen a lot of people interpret buck’s facial expressions as not showing just relief but relief mixed disappointment because a part of buck wanted things to change between them, in the romantic sense, he just doesn’t realize it. I do agree that buck’s expression as he says the words is interesting but I don’t personally think it has anything to do with him harbouring romantic feelings for eddie. for me it felt like one of those moments where you dread the reaction for so long, that when you finally face the thing and open up, even if the other person’s reaction is positive, it takes a minute for you to really internalise it and let yourself believe it.

Another moment that people often talk about from this scene is reaction to buck saying he can’t stop thinking about tommy. People often say eddie’s facial expression shows some sort of disappointment but again, I don’t know if that’s it? again, it is an interesting expression so I get why people would pause and focus for a minute but to me, it reads as eddie searching for a moment to give his honest advice to buck in the scenario.

Anyway, I’d love your thoughts on those particular moments and how you see them. Again, I’m not saying that the interpretations people are making of that scene in relation to buddie are necessarily in bad faith. I know it’s fun to analyze and interpret scenes in ways that you enjoy and I’d never want people to stop doing that. I just feel like Oliver and Tim have been very clear in that they do not want to tell a story where a guy comes out and is in love with his best friend and if buck was truly disappointed in hearing eddie say nothing’s going to change between them post buck’s coming out, that would be a quite bold contradiction.

I'm not sure if you actually meant to send this to me because I'm kind of the exact opposite of a person who engages in the practice of reverse-engineering actors' faces to find deep secret meanings that doesn't actually exist in the script. I think it's a slippery slop of a fan practice where if you go "haha he looks jealous here" and want to make it gay in your fantasy world and are capable of compartmentalizing that from the actual text, it's great! If you look at it like it's subtext that is meant to one day come to surface, as some sort of proof that this is not the actual story, you're either too deep in your world that you treat these characters like they have agencies and thoughts and feelings and are not, yknow, fictional - or that actors are making the conscious choice to layer their performances with breadcrumbs for a plot that doesn't exist at the time.

I've seen all these arguments with almost every scene this season. Eddie's face when Tommy enters the bachelor party. Buck's face when Bobby says Tommy is good for him. Bobby's face when he says Tommy is good for Buck. Eddie's smile when they enter the hospital room. Most of these are insignificant and the others have in-text explanation (Yeah, Bobby smiles weirdly in that scene. Guess what, he's kind of planning to kill himself). And like I said, if people want to read these in a pro-Buddie sense and go do fandom stuff with it, that's great. But we all know this fandom is taken over by the question of "will Buck and Eddie happen?" so everyone who's not even doing this in bad faith (I don't think all do) are looking at it in "does this support canon romantic Buddie?" lenses. So much of shipping Buddie is about speculating for the next episode, next season, next whatever that I think it's so easy to find yourself on that slippery slop where you fit every shot, face, editing choice to your interpretation. There's also the sunk cost fallacy at play here - once you do it for so long, it's hard to give up on the belief that it'll happen.

I think both Oliver and Ryan great actors - and that scene is one of my favorites in the season - but no, I don't think there's more to their faces than what they're given to play. Which is as all of them mentioned a billion times, a scene of a guy nervously coming out as queer to his best friend and receiving support. If I'm wrong and the rest of this fandom is right and the production/writers/showrunners are actually fully married to the idea of canon romantic Buddie but The Powers That Be are keeping gay Eddie in the closet as if he's a real person and they're the evil step-mother, and come S10 Buck realizes he's been in love with his bff all along, then yeah in-text, that would recontextualize all their performances. It still wouldn't change what the writers' intention has been with the text as it exists today or be proof that Oliver and Ryan are making acting choices for a hypothetical future SL.
