Aurora is, at best, food for thought and, at worst, a cold shower to anyone thinking interstellar travel will be easy, or even desirable, just because we develop the means to do so. As far as I've read, it was a pretty unique way of tackling the question of how might interstellar travel go terribly wrong for us? How we might be confined to our world as an answer to the Fermi Paradox. I liked the undercurrent, too, arguing against the notion of Earth as just our cradle and not our only home.

Freya's character is interesting with a lot of rough edges who carries on from her mother, Devi, and following her life while journeying to and arriving at their destinations gave a great window on the trials of keeping a generation ship going. I liked the pro-environmental slant at the end, too. This is the first Kim Stanley Robinson book I've read and really enjoyed it and while I've always meant to, I might give his Mars series a chance, too.

This is probably what the outer solar system will look like to us once we get there.

Yay. I finished another book. It's part of my latest novel reading challenge, still trying to overcome the powerful "Clare can't read books" story that keeps recurring, even while repeatedly proving it's a big stinking pile of crap All a small part of my long term mental health "recovery" plan. I have and have had many false stories about myself. Most of us do. Recognising and challenging the story is an important but sometimes very difficult process. This is book three of the nine I want to read by the end of the year. The first book I've ever read by Kim Stanley Robinson. I owned his Mars trilogy but didn't read it. I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected. It's got lots of science - although as a non-scientist I can't say whether it's accurate. And I struggled with the first section being in present tense which I always find a much harder reading experience. But then enjoyment happened and one day I might go back and read that Mars trilogy. There are decent characters and emotion in the science and a plot that's worthy of being written. The turn from colonisation to something else is well handled and the human arguments are feasible in such situations. I wonder if he's right about the impossibility of colonising other worlds one day. Is life planet specific? Possibly. I've always wondered how many ecosystems would be destroyed in sci-fi merely by people visiting other worlds. There's so much ignored for the sake of plot. Kim Stanley Robinson ignores nothing but still works a story that I'm pleased to have experienced.
