Great example of everyday noragi (work clothes, worn by farmers for ex.) from Taisho period. Note the makisode sleeve shape, offering freedom of mouvement!
You can see the close-up of the weave, made from asa (bast-fiber like hemp or linen) and kamiyori (twisted paper thread). Despite its "rugged" materials, weave is delicately interlocked with regular black stripes.
The coat also presents geometrical sashiko (white quilting), both reinforcing easily worn areas (collar, hems, inner center back), and decorating the garment.
PSA for writers: please please please don't put characters doing manual labour in "silk" kimono. I'll be forever grateful ;)

Kimonos for the Tomboy Princess. (I hoarded 100 kimono references and these seem fitting for her :3)

If you were a designer for Genshin, how would you have handled designing them to better represent their cultures while also fitting genshins early aesthetic? i, from a non artist standpoint, saw their early designs as more culturally accurate while also purposefully inaccurate to make them pop out more or fit the fighting-game thing, but I agree that it’s definitely changed with the earlier nations.
Which characters do you think have the best mix of culturally accurate/marketable and which ones have the worst mix? Like how do you feel about yae mikos design? It’s definitely more obvious that she’s wearing shrine maiden clothing but I’ve seen criticism that it’s way too sexualized and it makes me think about how they give the female characters cookie cutter outfits (boob window and short shorts) but seem to branch out more with male characters.
That’s!
Difficult to answer. I have ideas but it would be such a grand undertaking for the later nations trying to design things from ground up. Maybe I’ll do it someday but likely not?
As far as best designs go, I’ve always said the best design in the game is Kazuha, and I continue to stand by that. Kazuha’s is the kind of outfit where you can point at anything and say exactly why it’s there. It’s the kind of design that just has a lot of things that make Sense.

Since you asked specifically about Yae Miko, yes. I think she’s somewhere close to the bottom in terms of Genshin character designs. Here are a few things that bother me:

And here’s probably how I would design it instead, very roughly:

I’ll make a separate post at some point about the sexualization of female characters in Genshin because that would get quite long but suffice to say I really don’t think they handled Yae well.

To complete past diy kimono dressing for Sylvanians Families/Calico Critters I shared before (see 1 / 2), here is a new step by step by @haluchobin to create cute easy to put on obi :
Tie a thin elastic into a loose loop around the tail
Slip both ends of a ribbon through the loop and sew into place
Tie another ribbon around the elastic covering the knot. Style it into a bow, you can try to mimic real musubi if you want
Put on the finished obi and enjoy!

fun part of the kyoshi twins AU is: Zuko in Kyoshi Island blue. I think he wears it like we see Suki do in the flashbacks in Suki Alone, with the outer part of the top tied around his waist, but his undershirt is probably either short-sleeved or sleeveless to accommodate his firebending.
(kyoshi island isn't exactly a hotbed of fireproof materials. he has to make do.)
he might also have some bracers from Fire Nation armor salvaged from driftwood to protect his forearms. he's never burned himself with his own firebending, but it's always better to be safe rather than sorry.
(also Zuko with just. a completely normal ponytail.)
