More AU memes. This one is more focused on just the Wolf Fam. Ft. two drawings.
Btw the one about Belos trying his elixir is literal. His hair can actually floof up like that.

People -and this did include myself at one point- really don't want to engage with the fact that Belos is modeled after white supremacy by trying to bury this under the lens of "Oh he's actually a lonely weirdo like Luz!!!" when Belos' superiority complex is the most important part of him and it's where all analyses inevitably must stem from. I think the problem is that people are too attached to their speculative fanon version of Belos and instead of letting go of that to rebuild their understanding of him from the ground up (since he's a mysterious character who is only gradually revealed bit by bit), they keep clinging to this sympathetic tragic villain as the core behind their interpretation of him.
Everything about Belos makes so much more sense when you explore him as someone akin to a lot of right-wing 4channers; A lonely young boy who was radicalized because white supremacy promised to rescue him from his isolation, and after buying into it wholesale, he very much chose to cling onto the need to be superior to the "NPCs" even when someone close to him actually unlearns and deconstructs for him why this is harmful. He sees firsthand how someone just like him is happier for leaving this mindset, and then kills them to eliminate that contradiction threatening his world belief; At which point it’s inaccurate to infantilize him as just a lonely and misguided kid, because he’s no longer a kid and he made a very cognizant and informed choice to double down and commit actual violence.
And everyone knows that by this point, such people are not actually being sincere; They’re not secretly misguided, you can’t simply attribute their harm to not knowing better because this is what their religion says or whatever. These people know they’re committing harm, but rather than help on “lesser” people’s terms, they ‘help’ the way THEY see fit, in the way that strokes their ego. That’s what separates Philip from someone like Gwen, who humbled herself to focus on what Eda was saying she really needed. So the Titan’s summarization of Belos as someone who only cares about being the hero in his own delusion, and fears what he can’t control is… hardly an oversimplification, it really gets to the core of Belos as a character, and the narrative he embodies. It captures the difference between wanting to help and having a savior complex, and is what ends up delineating the two at the crucial crossroads.
And I find it a little concerning to joke about how this type of character is “just a silly guy” when people exactly like him are on the rise and committing very real violence right now. It’s also why I don’t buy the justification behind a lot of salt about how villains need to be humanized in order to show kids how THEY can become villains, because the show is fairly outright about how Belos rationalizes atrocities under the guise of the ‘greater good’ and refuses to self-reflect, and it’s not as if we don’t have Luz learning to understand characters like Amity or Lilith, the Collector and even Kikimora (whom she DID relate to personally, yet Kiki still doubled down with or without Belos), while still having the show emphasize that they need to get their act together and can’t just depend on people to save them.
There’s also the very obvious theme of Luz realizing she doesn’t owe her oppressor anything, especially not when he won’t ever meet her or anyone else on their terms, but idk some people just seem to hate Luz for having boundaries I guess, even though she already put in the effort to be kind and understanding to Belos and she got hurt for it. Hell the Collector made that effort after being inspired by Luz, and Luz was murdered protecting them from that mistake!!! There are some very obvious stories and lessons being told here with the actual protagonists being the heart of those narratives, but the problem I’ve noticed is that a lot of the people complaining on Belos’ behalf are those who hyperfixated almost exclusively on the Wittebane aspect of the lore, going over it with a fine tooth comb and microscope to extrapolate an entire fanon from the littlest of details… only to just ignore the actual show and narrative and themes happening on-screen.
And that leads to many not understanding various narrative decisions because they weren’t really paying attention to the actual point they’re in service to, and then they blame the writers for their own chosen ignorance, and how the story wasn’t about their part specifically so everything else doesn’t count and the whole show is wasted potential, really. The way so many of said fans immediately turned on Luz after the finale and tried to drag her down to Belos’ level by acting like she wasn’t any better for also wanting things and 'demonizing enemies', claiming Luz had unaddressed ‘flaws’ while Belos deserved more sympathy, and framing Belos as a ‘better’ character who ‘worked harder’ while claiming Luz was retconned into an arrogant chosen one who never grew, is actually baffling.
A lot of them are just upset that Belos didn’t play the role in Luz’s arc that they wanted him to play, so they’ve opted to dismiss Luz’s overall storyline as badly written and even a reflection of Dana's 'Catholic complex' (which is a tasteless jab to make) because they neglected the nuance behind every other aspect of Luz that wasn’t directly tied to Belos, that didn’t set her up as the one person who understands him or whatever because that’s more important to them than addressing the sheer trauma and pain that Belos willingly inflicted upon Luz. Because god forbid this brown girl be angry against her white abuser, huh? God forbid the white guy be used to set up the brown main character, rather than the other way around right????? It’s really just a jealous complaint about the show’s choice of priorities and celebration, hidden under the false guise of ever caring about Luz’s arc for Luz’s sake.
And that’s how you get insincere arguments about how Belos should’ve been able to survive, that’s how you get AUs that undermine the lessons of canon to egregiously relegate Luz to being Belos’ sidekick, or even present her as an obstacle to him getting his much-needed redemption, as if that last part hinges on all of Belos’ victims getting over their pain to help him, because obviously he needs it more than they do! Because we gotta spare Belos’ feelings by giving him friends instead of consequences!!! Unbelievable. He is not Amity, not Lilith, and definitely not Hunter, and the people who forgave them had actual reason to do so. And even Lilith had to move in with her mother so she could be given reparations by someone who actually owed it to her, rather than her younger sister and two kids.
And there’s definitely a major difference between Lilith and Gwen’s dynamic and Philip and Caleb’s, especially since Caleb was also a child when he moved into Gravesfield. Even if you think Belos' bigotry was radicalized due to 'grief' over losing his brother to witches, that's just entitlement and control because it's not as if Caleb can't have more than one positive relationship in his life; Philip is no better than people who blame minorities for some incident in their life and use that as justification to become white supremacists, and there's nothing sympathetic or 'tragic' about that.
But the point is that Caleb ultimately wasn’t THAT important to Belos because he’d always be secondary to witch-hunting, Belos clearly chose his white supremacy over his brother, and any ‘takebacks’ that come in the form of the Grimwalkers are insincere given Belos does nothing to actually repent or regret his violence committed on the people of the isles; It’d have been one thing if he DID try to undo his mistake by choosing differently, by cloning Caleb and giving up witch hunting, but he still doesn’t (Note that Belos does not hallucinate the ghosts of the witches he killed; He still feels no remorse over them, because his fear of being wrong comes from a selfish place). And unlike Luz, Belos can’t have it both ways because one option explicitly calls for the extermination of the other; It’s the Paradox of Tolerance that Luz struggled with, except contrary to what Belos claims, humanity’s existence does not require the eradication of others.
Because yes there IS a meaningful moral distinction between Luz and Belos -don’t forget they’re not just parallels but explicit opposites- that occurs even before you get into the genocide, not that you should neglect that other part either because it’s incredibly important, being the starting point for this entire rant. Society already has a bias towards devil’s advocating bigotry as some big misunderstanding, and prioritizing the angst of white dudes who commit it over the victims of color; Can we avoid applying that to fiction?!??!? I literally saw someone complain that the show didn’t portray Belos’ grief from murdering Luz, and that Luz’s “glory moment” took away from a Wittebane backstory!!! At this point, people are just being racist.

(Part 4 of La La Land Machine exposition posts!! I know I've made way more than 4 but this is the part that's going in chronological order. Like I've talked about Hunter and hunlow in this au before but this is his formal introduction, like Willow got in part 1. I also got quite a lot more followers since I last rambled about this AU so linking the other parts if they wanna catch up. And if they want, they can look through the tag for all the additional info.
PART 1
PART 2
PART 3
Anyway, I lied. We are only BEGINNING to talk about the hunlow slow burn. It's taken me long enough to set up Hunter and everything he's got going on. It sets up hunlow but they're not really close yet. But it won't even take that long to get the next post out because I am so excited to talk about them more)
Hunter Wittebane has lived his whole life wearing masks. He's been an actor before he developed object permanence. He was memorizing scripts by ear before he could fully read by himself.
Job after job, set after set, role after role. His environment is not only cutthroat competitive, but it's always in motion. Things never sit still. The biggest stability in his life was his Uncle Philip, whom Hunter loved intensely. Even if it felt like the only way he could express it was by bleeding.
But Hunter was only allowed to bleed in private. And if he wanted his Uncle to stroke his hair back and keep telling him he was special, he needed to prove it. He needed to be the second chance that he was born to be.
Hunter struggles to really understand who he is. Because he is seldom himself. If he's not playing a character, he's only known as the legacy of the Hollywood gem, Caleb Wittebane, Hunter's late father.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hunter was quite sheltered as a child. Other than being out and about for business reasons, he didn't really get to experience much of the world. If he wasn't working, he was usually confined to his Uncle's house. Or hotel rooms. The only outings he goes on that are considered "personal" are to church.
He loves to read and he'll devour whatever book he gets his hands on. Unfortunately his options are limited to what his Uncle believes is appropriate. Philip views the world as a depraved and lecherous place, as are the people that inhabit it. If it weren't for this world and its poison, his brother would still be alive.
And then he wouldn't need to waste his time replicating his brother's likeness in some aimless weak willed child who can barely comprehend how important his performance is in all of this.
Philip refuses to allow outside forces to contaminate his nephew. If Caleb's soul is going to live on in the way it should have, they can't make a repeat of last time. Caleb's replacement has to remain on the right path, or his legacy goes up in flames.
The Bible is one of Hunter's top comfort reads. It's the only book that his Uncle seems pleased to know he's interested in. And he's pored over the pages so many times that the familiarity is soothing. It also puts the fear of God in him. As do Philip's frequent lessons. He's shaping up to be a very faithful little Christian.
Hunter also watches a lot of (Uncle approved) television. He's a tiny chatterbox but is pretty starved of socialization. If his Uncle isn't around, he's stuck with the family assistant Kiki, who usually ignores him. TV and books are mostly responsible for Hunter's expansive vocabulary.
As a shy but precocious little boy, his best friends are sweet, comforting preschool cartoon characters.
Even though Philip's life seemed to orbit around Hunter and he worked day and night for the sake of his nephew's success, a lot of the time he just....wasn't around. Sometimes Hunter went weeks without hearing from him and was left in the "care" of Kiki.
Hunter was always left wanting. On those lonely nights when Philip was away, he would beg Kiki to call him so Hunter could at least say goodnight. All for the sake of holding the phone tight against his ear and hearing his Uncle's soft spoken "Sleep well, Hunter," so his world felt a little less cold.
If Philip even answered.
But when Uncle was home, Hunter found himself with some very guilty feelings and ungrateful thoughts.
The details are not important. By that, I mean Hunter is quite uncomfortable recounting the things that used to happen in the Wittebane house when his Uncle was home.
He said them aloud once. At the age of sixteen, when his breathing was in sync with the girl he had fallen in love with and her fingers were tracing gentle paths down his bare back. He felt like he had melted into a world where he could say anything.
It didn't stop his voice from wavering nor his throat from threatening to close up. It was like he was having a full body rejection of the admission. These were secrets meant to remain locked up in his chest until his heart went still.
But he said them. And after that, they couldn't go back to being unsaid.
He didn't say them again for many years. It wasn't until he was a grown man. He wrote them down and he told the whole world.
But we're getting ahead of ourselves.
The point is that when Philip was away, Hunter got lonely and wanted his Uncle back. When Philip was home and focused all of his attention on his nephew, Hunter wanted nothing more than for him to be gone again. He knew that was an awful thing to want and the guilt ate him alive.
Did he not love his Uncle? Of course he did! He loved him more than anything.
That's why it hurt so much.
Sometimes, his Uncle was a comfort to Hunter's anxious heart. He held him in his arms and hushed him when Hunter had nightmares. He was safety.
And other times, he was the reason for those nightmares and Hunter didn't feel like he could be safe until that man was out of the house again.
Maybe, no matter what happened, he'd never be truly happy with any situation he was put in. Maybe the state of "being happy" just wasn't real, but a thing TV made up. There was just something inherently empty and scary about being alive.
At least that's the conclusion the small boy came to. This remained his mindset as he navigated the big loud upsetting world around him, which only got bigger and louder and more upsetting as Hunter got older and his career grew.
The most glaring problem Philip encountered grooming Hunter in Caleb's image was that there's a drastic difference between a man who achieved the most undiluted burst of stardom in his twenties and a toddler. Hunter can not immediately slide into the dignified shadow his father left behind, because he's too young for the kind of dramatic roles that Caleb had dazzled the world with.
There was nothing available to little Hunter that Philip felt lived up to the standards of Caleb in his prime. Which was understandable but disappointing. So, with a heavy exhale, which made Hunter worry the hem of this shirt ("Am I doing something wrong, Uncle?") Philip relented. Hunter would need a lengthy portfolio by the time he was older, so it was now time to start building this budding actor from the ground up.
Commercials, TV appearances, small film roles. Though it pained him to do so, Philip abandoned all the initial integrity he attached to his brother's legacy, and focused primarily on simply getting Hunter's face on a screen, any screen, whatever it took to get him entrenched in the industry.
Hunter was a lot more sensitive than other children. When he was very little, he had a bad tendency to get distressed over things like bright lights and unfamiliar places and weird textures. This led to a lot of on-set tantrums and he was deemed a difficult and entitled brat.
His "brattiness" never quite went away as he aged. But Philip did manage to curb those tendencies to be far less frequent. It involved brief private conversations in the nearest dressing room. When Hunter emerged, he was quieter and a lot more willing to co-operate with what the adults needed from him.
Hunter learned that misbehaving had consequences. He learned to swallow whatever obscure distress he was feeling and just do his job.
This didn't make his tantrums stop. They just shifted from regular occurances to big nasty explosions that build up over a period of weeks to months.
He eventually gave up trying to suppress them. It doesn't work. So, he just allows his emotions to burst out of him in the most humiliating public display a human being can put on, and then takes his punishment.
Uncle keeps telling him that people are going to think there's something wrong with him if he keeps doing this.
Hunter begs him to believe that there's not. There's not something wrong with him.
While it was happening, Philip would consider the 90s as a rocky beginning to his nephew's career. He didn't care much for any of the films or television series' Hunter appeared in, likely because he didn't care much for any production that included small children. So he was uninterested by default in any of the roles Hunter managed to book.
Regardless, this didn't make Philip any less demanding. Even if it was all tripe, and by God, he was very vocal about it all being tripe, he was still strict about Hunter's work ethic. The boy was expected to pour everything into his performance, and through there were very irritating child labor laws, Philip turned a blind eye to directors pushing the limits every now and again.
After long work days, Hunter would listen to his Uncle tear his current acting job to shreds. The stupid demeaning script that Caleb would be appalled at, but Hunter had no choice but to take, because he simply doesn't have the privilege to be picky.
Hunter felt a deep humiliation by his own career before he was even ten years of age. There was nothing that Philip held to Caleb standard, which left Hunter a paranoid wreck most of the time, fearing that he was always doing something wrong but never knowing how to fix it.
When he thinks back on being a little kid, he has a lot of memories of tearfully begging his Uncle to stop thinking of him a certain way or looking at him the way he does. He remembers his throat hurting. Things must have gotten loud.
An older Hunter would wince as he makes that connection. He remembers his throat hurting but not the consequences of raising his voice.
Every so often, a more prestigious opportunity presented itself to him (like the role of the protagonist's son in a film adaption of an American classic), and Hunter got so overwhelmed by the pressure of finally having something that could possibly hold a candle to Caleb Wittebane that he completely flubbed the audition and failed to book the role.
He knows that were dire consequences for not getting it. Although, once again, he doesn't remember the details of the punishment. But he remembers how tightly Uncle gripped his wrist as they walked out of the building. He remembers sitting perfectly still in the car, scared to make a sound by wriggling in his seat. Scared to breathe.
That was the 90s. That was Hunter's experience as a young child actor.
By the year 2000, he was ten and that's when Philip quietly realized something.
Hunter currently resembled Caleb Wittebane in miniature. He had his strong nose, his ashy hair, his dark eyes. Philip had always anticipated that there may be a bit of her in his nephew's appearance, but there wasn't a trace. It was beyond ideal.
This is when things should have gotten easier. This is when dignified job opportunities should have begun rolling in. This is when the world should have taken notice that Caleb Wittebane was not dead.
But this was not the case.
What Philip did not anticipate was that the industry had changed significantly since the 80s. It was the year 2000 and a young Caleb Wittebane was not what the industry wanted the future of film to look like.
He realized this in his study late one night as he obsessed over old video tapes. And once the truth had sunk in, he called Hunter into the room.
Hunter remembers wearing red pajamas patterned with beagle puppies. He has a memory of liking those pajamas a lot but can't recall the disappointment of growing out of them and throwing them away. It makes him suspect that at some point he just stopped wearing them.
On that night, a part of Philip gave up completely. He decided that this attempt of reviving his late brother's career was a failure before it had even started.
However, Philip was a deeply complex man. A remarkably stubborn man. So even when a part of him died, another part flared with life. It was the part of him that wanted to dig his heels in and say he wasn't done yet. Maybe they didn't want Caleb now, but this world was fickle. Who knows what they'd want in five years? In ten?
Hunter would continue making a name for himself, Philip would make sure of that.
Hunter would be something special if it damn near kills him.
And if he fails, Philip would kill the boy himself.
So, Hunter continues working diligently, attempting to find his footing in the rapidly changing environment. The early 2000s seem to be working overtime to distance itself from the 90s and it certainly takes some getting used to.
When Hunter is around eleven, he is told for the first time that he is not very nice to look at. According to various make up artists and hair stylists who he is left in the custody of when Kiki is god knows where, it's very easy to be cute as a small child. Baby fat n' all. But at a certain age, you start outgrowing it and that's when it becomes apparent whether you're going to be a handsome young man or not.
They gently break the news that there are not a lot of promising signs for Hunter. As one of the women, maybe in her late twenties, cups his face in her hands and tilts it towards the light (he really hates when strangers touch him), she sucks through her teeth and winces, as though she's trying to dig something out with her eyes but is coming up short. Nothing about his features reads as a future leading man. He can still have a steady acting career of course. But it's important he not get his hopes up too high. He's doesn't look like the typical Hollywood star.
Hunter argues with her. He riles himself up until his face flushes with rage. He looks just like his father, who was one of the most famous leading men of all time.
"Who's your Dad?" The woman asks.
Hunter frowns. He's never said the word "Dad" in his life. But the full name is familiar on his tongue when he answers the question.
"Oh, yeah," She says vaguely. "I think my parents used to watch his movies. I guess he was what they considered handsome in the 80s but..."
He doesn't like the way she trails off. He doesn't like all the new information being presented to him. He doesn't like her saying Caleb Wittebane wasn't handsome. In the world Hunter lives in, the man is picture perfect in every discernable way. He's never heard a bad word spoken of his father before, not even of the shallow variety. Uncle only lets him speak to people with nice things to say about Caleb. It's so jarring that it makes him feel nauseous. This isn't the way things are supposed to be.
And what's even worse, does looking like Caleb Wittebane not even matter?
Does this legacy he's supposed to carry on not matter?
That's always been one of his biggest fears, but he can not think about it for too long or the meltdown gets bad. But this new realization about his apparently mediocre looks catch him so off guard that he can't help it this time.
Hunter proceeds to hyperventilate in a supply closet for the next twenty minutes. He had never thought about what he looked like before. He had never really cared. He didn't know his appearance could hinder his career. He didn't know everything could fall apart just by having the face he does.
This is when a deep seated insecurity centered around his body image began spiraling out of control. It was also around the time that Hunter's dietary restrictions were being implemented, as were the intensity of his ballet lessons. This certainly did not help his already deteriorating self confidence.
From that point, Hunter is far more conscious of his own ambitions as an actor. He believes he is more than just a little boy who performs because it's what his Uncle tells him to do. He's a young man who wants to become a success like his father before him. He wants recognition. He wants acclaim. He wants...he wants....he wants something that he does not currently have.
As an adult, Hunter can only drag his fingers through his hair and sigh sympathetically at the thought of his young self believing that his determination to be a successful was ever for himself. It was for Uncle. It was for Caleb Wittebane. It was for everybody but himself. He was just a stupid kid who thought he wanted this because he knew nothing else.
The 2000s are a time when Hunter simultaneously starts slipping out of his iron confines, while getting reeled back tighter than ever. As he grows older, his curiosity becomes more and more insatiable and current pop culture is not as easy to shield him from. Especially when it's such a huge part of his life as an actor.
By the age of twelve, he's such a boring obedient self sufficient little robot that Kiki doesn't even bother monitoring him as severely as she once had. What's he gonna do, really?
And though Hunter is adamant that he never breaks his Uncle's rules, he finds himself shattering them to smithereens on a regular basis.
"I like authority. And rules," He says, ignoring the fact that there are piles of teen magazines tucked away under his mattress. Ignoring the hour of TV he sneaked in that Philip would have shattered the television screen over.
And no matter how many times Hunter wrinkles his nose in disapproval at how rowdy and frivolous today's youth are, he's still reading those trashy articles, desperate to find some connection. His small bubble of worldliness is beginning to grow.
It is slowly occuring to Hunter that he is much different than other kids. But that's a good thing....right? He's on a cleaner path than they are. None of them are being led by Philip Wittebane.
This is a good thing, he tells himself. This is a good thing, this is a good thing, this is a good thing--
However, Philip does crack down on an aspect of Hunter's autonomy that has been mostly ignored until now.
Though he tries not to think about it, as it gives him the most splitting headache, Philip must internally acknowledge those rumors from an age ago. The word of mouth telephone that crackled with the events of that one ridiculous party. Caleb Wittebane, age 17(!!!!) with his tongue down some filthy girl's throat.
The news hadn't been as scandalous as Philip viewed it as, and the world forgot about it remarkably fast. But he never forgot. And he never would. It was a pesky stain on the otherwise clean image that Philip was trying to preserve.
It hadn't been Caleb. It wasn't like him at all to behave in such an indecent way. It was her influence. It always was. Sometimes his blood boiled when he remembered how deeply interwoven she had become in his brother's life. How the child wouldn't even exist without her. It was vile. Eternally contaminating a narrative she had no business being a part of.
Obviously, he never told Hunter about all this. About the party. About the tongue. About the girl. He never mentioned the girl. She was a footnote at best.
Anyway, Hunter was almost thirteen. He was tumbling into adolescence. And no matter how singleminded and sensible he tried to act, there would be challenges to this physical and mental development. And Philip knew from personal experience that there was nothing more damaging to a clean Christian boy than fizzling teenage hormones.
There would not be a repeat of last time.
On Hunter's thirteenth birthday, his Uncle gifted him a chastity ring, like many of the other young people that attended their church.
Hunter was so floored by the gift he forgot how to speak. And when his Uncle put his hand on his shoulder and murmured "I know you won't let me down," Hunter had nodded solemnly, suddenly feeling so much older than he had been a moment before.
He now had a responsibility to refrain from things he hardly understood.
Philip felt this would be an effective precaution. It made Hunter feel important and Hunter loved to feel important.
All that concerned Philip was that the boy stick to his morals.
Keeping his stupid tongue in his stupid mouth was only the tip of the iceberg of what the rules of the chastity ring entailed, but Philip stressed the importance of it nonetheless.
And if the boy failed to do this one simple thing, Philip was going to gouge his eyes out.
A few months later, Hunter was hired to appear in an advertisement produced by his family's church. He, and several other actors in his age range, promoted the rings they wore to the children watching at home.
Hunter was very proud to be a part of it. He rarely got to do anything educational.
When Hunter was fourteen, he surprisingly booked a role as Sir William in some medieval fantasy film for swoony teen girls.
He rolled his eyes over it, but this was the point when Philip made it apparent to Hunter that swoony teen girls was a huge chunk of the target demographic of any actor his age so he best begin pandering. He was no Edric Blight (Hunter fucking hated Edric Blight) but he'd probably appeal to some.
The means of obtaining the role was not Hunter's talent alone, but it was because of a perfectionist director who wanted raw, emotionally gripping action scenes, and was disappointed that all the hazardous exploits in the script would require stunt doubles. No parent in their right mind would allow their child to be put in such dangerous conditions.
Enter Philip Wittebane and his nephew Hunter.
The film's shooting schedule had a rough history. And after a few months, production had to stop altogether when an on-set accident resulted in Hunter being sent to the hospital.
He remembers the hospital, specifically the very uncomfortable bed. He remembers rarely sleeping through the night unless he was drugged, as he kept waking up with panic attacks about all the money he was causing the studio to lose by not healing faster.
By the time the film released, Hunter was fifteen and already moving forward with his next project.
The Golden Guard was a TV adaption of a well loved comic book series that was currently in the development stages. Hunter has never read the comic (he's never read most comics, other than newspaper funny pages) but he's been informed that he is the spitting image of the titular character.
Initially he was skeptical. Who wants a famous superhero on their screen who looks like him? Certainly not current networks who have a very limited view of what leading men should look like, regardless of the comic it's being adapted from.
Apparently, a lot of negotiations have been taking place with the Golden Guard's creator, in order to obtain rights to the series. After months of arguing, they wore him down, as they always manage to wear creators down, and he agreed to hand over his baby.
The one condition that he managed to secure was that the boy cast for the screen resembled the boy on the page.
Hunter was fully aware that if it weren't for that old man's stubbornness, there was no way he would have been eligible for the role. He remembered seeing him appear once during a screen test and had wanted to thank him. The speech that fell out of him was flustered and clumsy, but it made the man smile.
"There are going to massacre the Golden Guard," He said with a bitter smile. "But I think you'll do well."
He never saw him again after that. And though Hunter did not have the frame of reference to have an opinion, the girl he would inevitably fall in love with happened to be a huge comic book nerd, being especially infatuated with the Golden Guard. And her opinions were strong.
"He was right, y'know," She would inform Hunter. "Your show is a steaming pile of shit." She would then kiss the tip of his nose. "But you're the best part of it."
Speaking of girls,
Hunter met Emira Blight a year prior when she and her twin brother also showed up for the chastity ring promotional ad. The two of them would have gotten fired for vandalizing the set and pranking the director if they weren't the most well known stars associated with the project.
Someone had tried to contact their mother to come get her children under control but she had failed to pick up the phone.
"Our precious little Mittens has an audition today," Emira explained, hands placed angelically behind her back.
"Until further notice, Mom has forgotten she has two other kids," Added Edric.
Emira smiled. "Like the next time she notices her stretch marks <33"
The two of them burst into giggles. They were left to be "disciplined" by members of the crew, who hadn't the faintest idea how to handle either of them.
Hunter had tried to avoid them while on set. He never had any personal encounters with them but he was well aware of their existence. They had been starring in twin centric comedies for the last decade or so, and were beloved talk show guests for being chatty, mischievous and overall "adorable."
Hunter found them obnoxious.
Edric more so than Emira. Especially lately, as the two were finally branching out into their own separate careers, rather than remaining a double act. Meaning Edric could be found sniffing around in the same auditions rooms as Hunter, going for the same roles.
Edric had a perfectly structured face, devoid of blemishes. He had the most photoshopped nose Hunter had ever seen, except he looked like that in real life apparently. He looked perfect and he was already a star to begin with. The roles were his the moment he stepped into the room.
But this wasn't about Edric. Edric was off somewhere else, performing the leading role in some teen musical movie that was going to become a worldwide phenomenon the moment it hit television screens.
This was about Emira, who had just been cast as Ruby Green, the Golden Guard's love interest.
Emira Blight was one of the most beautiful teenage girls in the entire world. Hunter knew this because he read it in a magazine once. More specifically, she placed 4th on the list, but that was still a pretty impressive accomplishment.
Hunter always had a difficult time deciphering the exact definition of beautiful. It was apparently a far different thing than what you would initially imagine.
From what he had gathered, it had nothing to do with being particularly interesting to look at, but having a nice and tidy face with all its features being a specific size and shape. He couldn't understand how one girl on that list could be in 8th place, while another could be in 3rd, as they all looked so startlingly similar.
That was what beautiful meant, he supposed.
There were definitely people that Hunter saw as beautiful in their own peculiar way. In the way that wasn't correct. Sometimes he saw them in movies from the 80s-90s. Sometimes he saw them in audition rooms, but they rarely booked the role.
Sometimes he even saw them on the street as the car drove past, people who made him sit up and want to look at them a little longer--
Girls. Girls on the street. Just girls. Only girls. It was only girls that he looked at on the street. It was only girls that he looked at ever.
Emira Blight had Edric's perfectly structured face, which made her beautiful in a celebrity kind of way, but also made Hunter want to look at her less. She had Rapunzel hair and a rail thin frame and, much to Hunter's dismay, she was taller than him.
The wardrobe department were given notes to add an extra few inches to the Golden Guard's boots.
"Little Prince indeed," The head stylist had murmured under his breath, just loud enough for Hunter to hear. An furious flush set his face aflame.
There were no screen test to determine Hunter and Emira's chemistry before the latter was cast, which resulted in hours of reshoots where they were chastised for the lack of romantic tension that they were putting into their performance.
To be perfectly honest, Hunter disliked Emira quite a bit and she disliked him too.
She carried her troublemaking tendencies from the promotional ad to the Golden Guard set, frequently wreaking havoc on the cast and crew.
Hunter had blown a gasket and berated her for it several times, but all she had done was smile her insufferable smile, roll her eyes and sing songingly tease him for being so uptight.
She made him mad. So uncomfortably mad. If he pulled the kind of stunts she pulled, without caring about the consequences, he would probably be dead by now.
Emira rarely got angry. Everything she did had this air of impish joy, but based on the way she spoke to Hunter, her opinion of him wasn't exactly glowing.
She called him arrogant, bossy, egotistical, to which he practically exploded in response. And then she made fun of how red in the face he got.
The only time Hunter ever saw Emira as anything less than her usual bombastic self was early in the morning, during hair and makeup.
"Are you washing your face, honey?"
"Yes," Answered Emira, looking smaller than ever in the makeup chair.
"Drinking plenty of water? Eating healthy? Staying away from junk food? Getting plenty of exercise?"
"Yes, yes, yes and yes," Emira's voice was quiet and automatic.
After a pause, she continued "It's not my fault."
The makeup artist hummed, unconvinced, which made Emira grip the seat so hard her fingers shook.
But the woman didn't push the matter any more and got to work on painting Emira's face into the porcelain masterpiece that made its way on to magazines.
Hunter watched in fascination as a few minutes of work with sponges and brushes wiped her skin clear of acne. And then she was what everyone around here would call beautiful once again.
When Emira noticed him looking, she said, in her usual playfully indifferent voice "I think Hunter's eyebags are getting worse."
"We know," The woman replied, exasperated.
The comment wasn't much, but it successfully corralled Hunter into his default mood. Not being enough. Any thoughts about Emira flew out the window, and he was back to fretting about his own inadequacy.
"And he's more sickly looking than usual," Emira decided to add.
"Well, maybe if he laid off the coffee. It's got him looking like a half-dead ghoul. No wonder it takes so long to make him look presentable."
It was a bad time for Hunter to be taking a sip of his takeaway cup. He frowned. "I've been awake since 4:30am."
"You should go to bed earlier then,"
"But I--"
"And kids shouldn't be drinking coffee at all."
"I'm not a kid!"
"Hush up. We've got work to do on this face and the last thing I need is to listen to you bitching again,"
Hunter glowered at her.
"You're gonna have wrinkles before you're 18 if you keep pouting like that."
He was so preoccupied with not throwing a temper tantrum that he didn't notice Emira leave the room.
The worst thing she ever did was while they were filming episode 3 and she had decided that Hunter's uptight behaviour deserved a humbling punishment. He didn't know how but she had somehow managed to break into his trailer and scavenged the place for something embarrassing.
This resulted in his stuffed frog Sprig being paraded around the set in Emira's arms as she declared the toy's owner to everyone who would listen in a high pitched trill. Everybody. She told everybody. Everybody knew about his toy. And now nobody was going to treat him seriously.
And when Hunter finally processed what was happening, all he had wanted to do was cry.
But he couldn't cry. Because fifteen year old boys don't cry. But he wanted to cry so badly that his usual screaming rage was nonexistent. He was just completely deflated.
He silently took the frog from Emira's possession and walked away. She had seemed confused, not understanding why he was not turning his funny red colour and yelling his head off.
She didn't bait him as much after that. She rarely spoke to him at all, outside of filming.
At one point she had randomly burst into his trailer, brandishing a magazine full of women in bikinis.
"For you!" She announced proudly. "A gift."
Hunter was a little slow on the uptake because a bikini magazine being within ten feet of his person was so incriminating that immediately thinking of the consequences nearly made him black out.
When he could speak again, he exploded "ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND?? GET THIS OUT OF HERE!!"
"No, no, listen," Emira insisted. "I know your Uncle is like. Super Christian--"
"So am I!"
"And I know you're never gonna get your hands on this stuff by yourself. So, I'm helping,"
"Why do you even have this?" Hunter demanded, disgusted.
Emira took more than half a second to answer. "It's Ed's."
As if anything on earth could have made Hunter want to touch the thing less.
"Why..." He began, lost. "Why would you ever think I would want this?"
Emira cocked her head at him, puzzled. "You're a boy."
"Get out."
At the time, Hunter had presumed this to be another means of humiliating him, because he had quickly written Emira off as inexplicably cruel. But in hindsight, she had probably just been trying, in her own emotionally stunted way, to apologize to him. She had known next to nothing about boys and she knew even less about herself, other than she was a thing boys were meant to be obsessed with.
They were both just stupid kids who couldn't communicate properly to save their lives, because they had never learned how.
As a child, Emira ranged from a mild bully to an indifferent co-star, to an acquaintance of Hunter's. As an adult, she was the close friend in his Instagram comments section who kept hitting on his wife.
She still never figured out boys, but she figured out herself.
But again, getting ahead of ourselves.
Despite being the only two teenagers on set, Hunter and Emira did not spend much time together unless they were working. Once she settled down and stopped causing problems, Emira spent a lot of her time across the studio to visit her little sister, who was filming some preteen comedy show.
Hexside it was called. Some some vapid sugary husk of a television production that had magic and witches, yet not an ounce of dignity. Hunter had become quite a ruthless critic when it came to TV and film, mostly because he had spent his whole life in the company of a man with sky high standards.
It also helped him feel better about his own work as an actor. The glass half full method. Maybe the Golden Guard was not going to be the most brilliant show of all time, but at least he wasn't working on Hexside.
He had caught glimpses of Emira's sister a few times around the studio, mostly because her hair had been dyed a bright garish teal, so she was impossible to miss.
There were other cast members scattered about, you could usually tell from the explosion of layers and clashing patterns they were dressed in. Chunky belts, brightly coloured converse, weird pointy hats, jangly jewelry. They were a visual overload.
On one occasion, Hunter was waiting in line at the canteen. He was feeling lightheaded again, like if he didn't eat something in the next hour he would probably pass out while shooting. The last time that happened, it was really embarrassing.
He was a little zoned out, so he didn't pay them much attention at first. But then the poofy tutu-like skirt and zebra print leggings caught his eye, if only for him to wonder how in the Lord's name these young actors ever signed up for this ridiculous show.
It was a girl and a boy and their conversation entailed some familiar words and names that Hunter hadn't heard said in months.
Ah. The movie. The swoony teen girl movie. That had just released in theaters, hadn't it?
That's when the girl brazenly stated "I wanna sink my teeth into Sir William," successfully knocking Hunter straight out of the realm of sensibility.
What. In the name of all that is holy. Is that supposed to mean???
And also.....he's Sir William.
"You want to BITE ME??" Hunter finds himself blurting out, completely flummoxed. Was that a threat of violence? Did she not like his performance? Did she find his voice annoying like those other film critics? He used to get a lot of death threats for that when he was younger but...
It didn't really sound like a death threat. It was was just....absurd. How was he supposed to take this?
The girl whipped around, flashing Hunter with a very bright pair of green eyes. They were blown wide in panic, and she looked at him like he was the one about to bite her.
(He wasn't about to bite her.)
The girl wasn't tall, but she was big. Broad shoulders and a thick chubby build. Her face was rounder than he usually saw in young actresses, and her nose was wide and flat.
All he could really think as he was digesting these all details at once was....she was interesting to look at.
Hunter watched as a fluorescent shade of pink burned across her lightly freckled cheeks and the girl scurried away, flanked by the younger boy, calling after her.
For some reason, Hunter turned around to watch her leave until she was completely out of sight.
He was left more confused than ever.
What did he do that deserved biting? He never found out.
(Well, he found out eventually but....)
He continued to see that girl around the studio sometimes, as well as the young boy that accompanied her, and Emira's little sister.
The bigger girl usually tried to hide whenever she saw him, though Hexside's flamboyant wardrobe department made that nearly impossible. Hunter presumed she was embarrassed by what she said, though he really wasn't all that offended. He had heard way worse. The thing that drew his attention to her was actually the lengths she would go to to make herself invisible. He watched her dive under a table once.
Hunter usually just stared, not remembering until an hour later that embarrassed people don't like being stared at.
Eventually, Hunter and Emira started spending occasional school hours with the Hexside cast's tutor, which resulted in them all being lumped in a room together.
Her name was Willow Park, he learned. And with a little exposure therapy, she stopped blushing every time he was within ten feet of her. Though they still never really talked, she seemed to become a little more comfortable with his existence.
She didn't look at him much though. Or anybody for that matter. She seemed to be very guarded and closed off whenever they were in the school room. Hunter had also noticed that the tutor had to spend more time with her than anyone else.
But Willow Park was not currently where Hunter's head was at the moment. He had other things to deal with.
The recent Golden Guard script had been delivered to Hunter and did not really like what it had to say.
Apparently several episodes of the romantic tension that Hunter and Emira were famously bad at was finally coming to fruition in this big grand dramatic kiss scene.
Hunter did not think about kissing much because it made him feel very weird and squirmy, but he was always well aware that if he was ever kissing a girl anytime soon, it would probably be circumstances like this.
His opinion on romance in general is that he wasn't quite sure if it was something that could really happen in real life or if it was just a concept made up for TV.
First kisses were considered a milestone in the shows and magazines Hunter had secretly devoured. Something sacred and significant. It can't be with just anyone.
Admittedly, it had Hunter second guessing himself a little bit. Is his first kiss important? Or is that just a bunch of silly TV fluff with no grounds in reality?
It doesn't matter if it's Emira, does it? He's read books where first kisses are supposed to feel like you've been electrocuted. But in a good way. He can't imagine being electrocuted in a good way.
He gets his answer on the day of shooting when the kiss is ordered of him.
He should be grateful that they've been directed to keep it chaste. They both wear rings after all, and this is a family show.
Hunter squeezed his eyes shut, because eyes are always shut when people kiss in movies. And his mouth pricks Emira's mouth. And that's it. That's his first kiss over and done with.
And when he opens his eyes, a little underwhelmed and vaguely wondering why everything feels the exact same, Emira looks disappointed too.
That's when he realizes that the significance of first kisses is all lights and cameras. It's made up for TV. None of it is real.
But what he can't understand in the moment is why he feels a bit sad. There's no reason to feel sad.
But it's an annoyingly heavy emotion that sticks with him for the rest of the day.
They do a million shoots. Or what feels like a million. Hunter kisses Emira what feels like a million times. He had gone from having never kissed before to having kissed far too many times in one day.
And not a single kiss felt like anything but the usual emptiness that Hunter was used to.
During shooting breaks, he thought a little too much about how everything was just going to be like this. Forever. All of his experiences. Scripted. Made up. Not real.
Nothing was ever going to be real.
He didn't usually think about things like that. But now he was finding it hard to think about anything else.
Hunter couldn't sleep that night. You would think he'd sleep soundly when he had to get up before the crack of dawn, but he continued to struggle. Too much caffeine, too much brain bees that never shut up.
Tonight it was that one single thought of an entirely artificial lifetime.
Hunter was never going to be real.
After hours of restless tossing and turning, he left his bed and went downstairs, his footsteps expertly navigating across the creaky floorboards. He would watch something terrible on TV and he'd get so distracted by hating it that he'd forget his own problems.
After pushing a button, the first thing that appeared on Hunter's screen was a familiar girl's rounder than average face and bright green eyes.
Apparently, the Hexside Pilot had premiered recently. Hunter scoffed, making himself comfortable and deliberately tuning into whatever brain rotting stuff he was about to experience.
Unsurprisingly, he hated it. It was terrible. Cheap jokes. Flimsy plots. An obnoxious laugh track. He had never seen a worse show in his life.
Nothing is real, I'm not real, I'm not real, Nothing is real, I'm not real....
The costumes looked just as ridiculous on screen as they did in the studio.
Nothing is real....
The sets were cheap.
I'm not real....
Hunter abruptly paused mid laugh track, and stared at Willow Park's interesting face for an additional moment.
He knew absolutely nothing about this girl. Absolutely nothing.
The character she played was borderline illiterate, and Hunter genuinely could not say how much of her he was seeing was a script and how much was her.
But she was very lookable.
Are you real?

Retired Leaders AU Info Masterpost
Figured I'd compile basic info about this AU into one big post.
----
THE BASICS:
It's a "Good Uncle" kind of AU, where Belos is a better person. He actually tried to unite the realms, because he believed it would be beneficial for both, but it was doomed from the start and went horribly wrong. He has publicly admitted to and apologized for his wrongdoings and resigned from his position, and the Coven System was abolished. His family occupied leadership positions within his Coven and also left those roles behind, hence the AU's title.
I refer to the family as the Wolf Fam. It consists of Belos, Steven, Hunter and Kiki, along with their palismen. They all live together in a newly built house.
--
THE CHARACTERS:
This isn't a list of all characters that exist, just the Wolf Fam and a handful of others, mostly OCs.
Belos Wittebane (he/him; mid 410s): Former Lord of the Boiling Isles; now a palisman carver; husband of Steven.
Steven Bellamy (he/him; 53 y/o): Husband of Belos; former Head of the Lord's Coven; now a P.E. teacher at Hexside.
Hunter Wittebane (he/him; 17 y/o): Nephew of Belos, raised by him and Steven; former Golden Guard; now mainly focused on pursuing his interest in engineering and tech.
Kikimora Volk (she/her; mid 20s): A sort of adopted daughter to Belos and Steven and adopted sister to Hunter; former Secretary; now works at a history museum.
Crescent (they/them): A floating snow leopard palisman belonging to Belos.
Ash (he/him, they/them): A dark gray wolf palisman belonging to Steven.
Waffles (she/her, they/them): A winged red wolf palisman belonging to Hunter.
Grusha (she/her): A spotted hyena palisman belonging to Kiki.
Jasper Tholomule (he/him; 44 y/o): Younger half-brother of Steven; father of Matt; husband of Cass.
Cassidy "Cass" Tholomule (they/them, she/her; 44 y/o): Spouse of Jasper; stepparent of Matt.
Matthew "Matt" Tholomule (he/him; 13 y/o): Biological son of Jasper and stepson of Cass; nephew of Steven.
Leslie Bellamy (she/her; 80s): Mother of Steven and Jasper; grandmother of Matt; wife of Opal.
Opal Bellamy (she/her; 80s): Wife of Leslie; stepmother of Steven and biological mother of Jasper; grandmother of Matt.
Ren Kanemaru (they/them; 53 y/o): Steven's childhood friend; former scout.
Valerie "Val" Durand (she/her; 54 y/o): Best friend of Steven and Ren, who they met after joining the Lord's Coven; former scout.
Petra Barany (she/her; mid 20s): Best friend and former assistant of Kiki.
That's about enough I think, I won't be including the rest here. One thing to note is that the Collector doesn't exist in this version.
And you may have also noticed that "Steve" is a little different. I created this version back when we only had one scene with Steve and had no idea he was going to get a face reveal and more canon info, and I just chose not to change the name after that happened. So Steve technically exists, but it's not canon Steve. They do have some similarities though.
--
THE STORY:
Back in the 1600s, Philip did not kill Caleb, and reluctantly gave the Boiling Isles a chance. Though resisting it at every turn, he ultimately fell in love with it. He developed the belief that uniting the two realms would be beneficial for both, combining the less dangerous climate of Earth with the more open and progressive culture of the Isles. After Caleb died in an accident during the search for one of the ingredients for the portal door, Philip only became more committed to the idea.
He began to do extensive research into magic, digging for as much information as he could find, which included looking into lost and forbidden magic. The latter is how he discovered both Grimwalkers and a way to extend one's life by consuming palismen. As he formed a coherent plan for how to enact his goal, he began trying out his messaging on small groups of witches to see what works, as well as testing out Coven sigils on the earliest ones until they worked as intended. He also took the name Belos and began to wear a mask.
Slightly over 50 years ago he took power as the Lord of the Boiling Isles, becoming the chief religious figure and a sort of constitutional monarch, with his fourth Grimwalker nephew, Anthony, by his side as the Golden Guard. There was an elected government responsible for things like deciding on budgets and passing legislation unrelated to the Coven System, however Belos had ultimate authority and could override any decision. He largely stayed out of their affairs unless he thought what they were doing would undermine his ultimate goal.
However, his plan to unite the realms was doomed from the start. When he attempted to do it on the Day of Unity, it went horribly wrong and shattered his hopes. The Unification Spell didn't work and was simply draining people of magic. It ended abruptly once Belos's staff, through which the spell was channeled, exploded. He, Hunter and the Hexsquad barely escaped the blast by leaving through the portal door. They ended up stuck in the Human Realm for a time, before finding the same way back as they did in canon.
Belos publicly admitted that he had lied about speaking to the Titan, and that the plan to unite the realms was his own doomed idea. He apologized and resigned, with Steven, Hunter and Kiki following him. The Coven System was abolished, and the Isles became more of an actual democracy, without a single individual with ultimate authority being able to override the decisions of the elected government, which also became more transparent.
Belos helped with restoration efforts where damage had been caused on the Day of Unity, and he later took up palisman carving and caring for palismen in general to make up for consuming them to extend his own life. He also released many palismen souls that were previously trapped inside him, and is now aging at a more regular pace. Though some remain, in part because they have fused with his curse - he was cursed long ago, in a similar way to Eda, and his curse is a wolfcat. Both conditions have physically affected him, giving him scars, catlike pupils, sharp fangs, ability to purr, and making him much bigger than he was originally.
--
EXTRA:
spirituality on the Isles
Belos didn't invent a religion from scratch, but rather built on and expanded - or, to put it more harshly, exploited - already existing spiritual beliefs related to the Titan in order to achieve his goal of uniting the realms.
Before Belos, the Titan was rarely (if ever) viewed as a higher authority who, through messengers, gave witches rules to live by. He was mainly seen and respected as the origin of the Isles and all life on it. People thanked him for their existence, their magic, their harvests, etc. and payed tribute to him, but that was largely it. The prevalence of spirituality/religion has gone down over time.
Belos's rise to power with the claim of him being "the Titan's messenger" caused a resurgence of spirituality/religiosity, with him being seen as the authority on the matter by his followers. It has declined again once it was revealed that he hadn't actually spoken to the Titan.
glyphs
They were in frequent use by ancient witches, in part due to them having weaker natural magic and having to rely more on magical tools than modern witches. Over time, they fell out of common use and were limited to specific spiritual/religious rituals, and then only became more rare over time.
Disabled witches who had weak or no natural magic would simply rely on their staffs, due to which they wouldn't rediscover glyphs out of necessity. On top of that, when knowledge of glyphs was still more common, it may have been taboo to use them for non-spiritual/religious purposes.
Covens
There have been a number of different Coven systems throughout history. Some Covens were based around familial ties, some were based around what kinds of magic people specialized in, some were simply regional, etc. Though sigils had not been used before, and it was possible to move between Covens, with the level of difficulty depending on the type of Covens in question. Whether it was legal to be Covenless may have varied as well, with it being illegal in some places at some points in time. When Belos rose to power, he chose to use the specialization-based model of Covens to sort people into.
With Belos's system gone, the concept of Covens wasn't completely abandoned, but rather became non-official and based on voluntary participation, as opposed to a legally mandated system that also restricted what types of magic people could use.
the structure of Belos's government
As mentioned previously, it was a sort of constitutional monarchy. Belos was the Lord of the Boiling Isles, it's main religious figure and ultimate authority, but there was an elected government, responsible for things like budgets and passing legislation. Belos could override any decision they made.
The Head Witches of the main nine Covens were originally appointed by Belos alone, but after Terra turned out to be a disastrous choice and had to be pushed out, he handed the appointment process over to the elected government, and would now simply confirm or deny their appointments. Those officials could be bribed, though, to appoint someone who shouldn't necessarily hold a position of power, like Adrian. Belos tried to keep an eye on such issues - or more so tasked others with doing so, but some still slipped through.
The Lord's Coven was a separate branch of government, entirely under Belos's control, though he tended to be somewhat reclusive, so day-to-day coordination and such was largely handled by other high-ranking members of the Coven.
The top leadership originally consisted of three positions: the Lord (Belos), the Secretary (first Winston, later Kiki) and the Golden Guard (first Anthony, later Hunter). The third position was later split into two, the Golden Guard and the Head of the Lord's Coven (first Lilith, later Steven), with the latter taking on some of the former's responsibilities, which allowed Belos to keep Hunter in the castle more for his safety.
The Lord's Coven was the Isles' military, and they performed other tasks and missions for Belos as well, such as finding abandoned palismen for him to consume as "medicine" - something he agreed was unfortunate, and claimed he was looking for an alternative to - and searching for Titan's Blood. Regular law enforcement was typically done by members of other Covens, though some scouts, mostly newer ones, could get the assignment. Usually, experienced scouts were only brought in for emergencies, or to deal with particularly powerful criminals.
the basilisks
The basilisks were not tortured and were generally treated better than in canon, but they were made to do things they didn't like, and were still kept in captivity, in part out of concern that they'd start attacking people if released out in the wild, and they were unhappy with their lives, so they still escaped.
The basilisk that attacked the schools in season 1 had always had behavior problems, possibly a combination of being the earliest and thus least correctly created, as well as being mishandled by those responsible for their care. They have since been treated, and are no longer dangerous.
Vee had complicated feelings about Belos, but was not terrified of him when she saw him in the Human Realm, especially once he made it clear he had no intention of forcing her to return to captivity.

My pins from Emperor's Coven came in and everything looks great!
The chibi belos pin is so CUTE!!! I love the amount of detail that went into the deer pride pin.
The deer & rainbow print genuinely looks amazing. The frog sticker sheet is amazing too, but in a different way /pos. I think my favorite is a tie between the kiki frog sticker and the "a very angry frog" sticker.
The belos print honestly looks so cool. He's just vibin' My phone does not do the upper part of the 'wittebane' print justice, but it looks very nice!
My order also came with two letters, which were also great! But tbh I feel... scared to post my chosen name online publicly.
Thank you so much for the goodies @a-magpie-in-gravesfield!

A Time For Play
This fic is for @jess-the-vampire for her AROFAM au! I absolutely love the au, and I got inspired to write! Hope Jess likes it!
The day started like any other at the mud house, the family had a chaotic breakfast, Philip and Caleb sent Hunter off to school with hugs, kisses, and well wishes. Kiki had to go into town as it was her turn for grocery shopping. Steve was… doing whatever Steve does. Which left the brothers with some rare alone time.
Which is exactly what Caleb had been waiting for. He’d tried planning this out but… He was just gonna go for it!
“Philip? Can I ask you something? A request! A bit of an odd one, but I hope you say yes!” he beamed at his little brother from across the kitchen island. Philip rose a brow as he dried the dishes from breakfast, “A request? I suppose I’ll have to hear what it is before I make a decision.” Caleb chuckled, “Of course! I… well… Do you want to play? Like we used to!”
That gave the mud man pause, “...Play? Caleb, we’re grown adults. We don’t… “play” unless you mean play a board game or-”
“No! I mean play properly!” he interrupted, “I know we’re not children anymore but… I’ve missed playing with you. We used to have such fun when we were little! Even if those times are fraught with strife… I hold the memories of our games and adventures close to my heart still. I… was just hoping that we could just… try? If you hate it we can stop! Just… please?” Philip really did try to look away, but those bit sad brown eyes stared back at him, the perfectly practiced puppy dog eyes… He sighed with a grumble, “Fine. We can try and… play something. What did you have in mind?” Caleb immediately lit up, clasping Philips hands in his own. “Come! Follow me!” Philip had no choice but to follow as Caleb pulled him out the door and into the forest. He truthfully wasn’t not looking forward to this a bit, he’d missed his brother painfully over the centuries. He held onto the memories of their games just as Caleb had. A chance to relive that… well it was tempting if nothing else. The elder Wittebane stopped as they reached a spot a fair way into the woods, “We’re gonna play hide and seek tag! One of us hides-”
“Caleb I know how to play hide and seek tag.” he deadpanned, “I may be out of practice, but I haven’t completely forgotten how to play.”
Caleb rolled his eyes, but smiled. “Alright then Mr.SmartyPants, you’re gonna be It first!”
He sighed, but there was a hint of a smile in his eyes. “Very well. But first we need ground rules. No magic allowed from either of us, the house is the safe spot, and you can hide anywhere in the woods in a mile wide radius.”
“Very well, the game is afoot dear brother! I just hope you’re up to snuff.” he smirked, flicking the younger Wittebanes bangs. Said younger Wittebane glared with no heat behind it and turned around. “You have to the count of 30. Ready? One, two, three, four…”
Caleb took off, grinning like… well like a child. There were plenty of places to hide, he could climb a tree, in a nearby cave… But he’d been through these woods enough to know the perfect spot! A decently sized waterfall was a little ways away, it had a cave behind it that was perfect! He just needed to get there in time.
”...27, 28, 29… 30! Ready or not! Hear I come!” he called, walking leisurely in the direction Caleb had headed. He wondered if Caleb thought he had the advantage. Physically he did, but Philip had lived in the woods for years, been on the run, and these woods in particular were the ones he knew best. Every nook and cranny and possible hiding spot was known to him. Plus. Caleb’s boots left tracks. So… easy.
He looked around at the red trees around him, humming to himself a bit. He was honestly a bit surprised that Caleb had asked this of him. They had plenty of fun memories since he moved in with them. Playing board games with Hunter, going on hikes with Hunter, bringing Hunter to school… the occasional play fight with Hunter… Ok, he was starting to see the reasoning of his brother. It had been awhile since they’d done something fun just the two of them.
He sighed to himself, this could still get bad quickly. Coven scouts could come by and attack them while they were alone. A monster could try and eat Caleb while he didn’t have Flapjack. He looked around, listening and keeping ready to run at a moment's notice. He felt like some kind of skittish rabbit.
Finally, he paused. A waterfall, one he knew, there was a good sized alcove behind it… and muddy footprints leading part of the way inside. “Is he losing his touch, or is he trying to get caught?” he mused, gliding up the path and popping his head in. “Caleb? Are you here?”
It was silent in the alcove, not counting the roaring of the waterfall. He carefully stepped in, looking around. “Caleb? I saw your footprints, I know you’re here.” A muffle giggle was his answer, and he couldn’t help but smirk. “Caleb.” Suddenly, there was a cloak in his face, and the sound of running feet passing him, as well as a boyish cackle. “CATCH ME IF YOU CAN, OLDIE!” Philip took his brother's cloak off his face, carefully folded it, tucked it into his own cloak, and took off after his brother. “YOU’RE OLDER THAN ME!”
Another bright cackling laugh was the response his brother gave. He was really enjoying himself… wasn’t he? Caleb looked over his shoulder briefly, racing through the forest with ease. Jumping over logs, ducking under branches, he barely even needed to think as he ran. Titan this was so exhilarating! It was sensational! It was fun! It was so much fun! Being chased by his brother through the woods, laughing at him and teasing him all the way! Oh it brought back such wonderful memories! “WHAT’S WRONG PIPPINS! CAN’T MOVE LIKE YOU USED TOO?”  he called, laughing at the small rock that sailed past his head. “MISS ME! MISS ME! NOW YOU GOTTA KISS ME!” “CALEB, STOP BEING A CHILD!” his baby brother called back, just prompting more laughter.
He burst through the foliage and grinned as he saw the house, “SO SORRY PIPPINS! LOOKS LIKE I-ACK!” The sudden weight on his back was certainly a surprise. “What the- Philip!” Philip let out a breath as he sat on Caleb’s back. “Gotcha. Guess this means you’re it.” Caleb blinked, then blinked again, then grinned, and then fell into a giggle fit. “Okay! Okahahay! You got me! Hehehe!” Philip couldn’t stop the chuckle that left him, his brother's laughter proving too infectious. “Alright… I’ll admit. That was pretty fun.”
“Oh we’re not done yet!” Caleb smirked, suddenly flipping Philip over and grinning down at him. “First, I’m it now, so you have to run and hide this time! And there’s lots of other games I wanna play with you today!” He enunciated this point with a poke to Philip's stomach.
Both brothers were surprised by the squeak that left the younger Wittebanes' lips. Philip’s face quickly ran the gamut from surprised, to embarrassed, to utter dread. Especially when Caleb’s face absolutely lit up. “Pip.” he gasped, a mischievous twinkle in his eyes. “You don’t mean to tell me… you’re still ticklish?”
Philip wiggled under his brother, looking around desperately. Mostly hoping no one came around to see this. “No! Of course not! I outgrew that centuries ago!”
“Are you suuuure?” he smirked, poking his stomach again.
This time Philip was prepared and he didn’t make a sound. Unfortunately… he’d lied, he was still ticklish. Something he’d only realized just now. “I’m sure.” Caleb hummed, “Now, for some reason. I don’t believe you. I think I’m gonna test it! I’m pretty sure I remember your ticklish spots, from when you were just a little baby Pip!” Philip glared, trying to wriggle free. “I’m telling you I’m not! Caleb get off of me!”
Caleb did no such thing, poking at his stomach, “I remember when you were little, I’d poke your belly, and you’d curl up all cute while giggling your head off!” Philip frowned harshly, wiggling and kicking. “C-Caleb! Get o-off!” “But it wasn’t that bad of a spot.” he hummed, pointedly ignoring his brother's command. “Your worst spot waaaaas…. Oh yes! Right here!” He suddenly shoved his hands under Philip's arms, wiggling his fingers around like snakes.
Philip gasped, biting the inside of his cheek, shaking his head and wiggling harder. He fought down the rising laughter with all he had, it seemed it was still a bad spot.
“What’s wrong Pip? Does it tickle?” Caleb teased, wiggling his fingers faster, “Come on Pippy! It’s just us right now, you can laugh if you want!” Philip shook his head, “I d-don’t need to la-haugh!” “Seems like you doooo!” he sang, jiggling his hands in Philip underarms. “Come on Pip! Just a liiiittle giggle?” Damnit, the jiggling broke him. “AH! Nohohohoho! Get ohohooff! Ahahahahahaha! Caleheheheb! This is undihihhihignifihiihihied!” “There you go!” he cheered, and giggled. “Of course it’s undignified! That’s the whole point! But I mean… if you really want this to be “undignified” I can make that happen!”
“Caleb- Caleb don’t you DARE!” he cried as his shirt was lifted to expose his stomach, and his brother gave him an evil grin. “Oh… I dare.” He quickly took a deep breath, and to Philip embarrassment, blew a Titan forsaken raspberry. Which proved to be humiliatingly effective against the younger Wittebane. “AAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! NOHOHOHOHOHO! NAHAHAT THAHAHAT! KNOHOHOHOCK IT OHOHOHOFF! AHAHAHAHAAHAH!” he cried, pushing at his brother's face and kicking to try and break free.
“Never! I haven’t heard you laugh like this in years!” Caleb laughed, blowing another volley of raspberries, making Philip squeal, to his utter shame. Thank the Titan no one here to see this.
“GEHEHEHET OHOHOHOFF MEHEHEHEHE!” he cried, finally managing to get his feet under Caleb and kick him off. He rolled away, panting and giggling. “You… You will regret that…” “Uh-huh, I’m sure.” Caleb grinned from his spot on the dirt. Philip glared at him, but there was no heat behind it. Honestly… as loath as he was to admit it… That was genuinely fun. Playing games, laughing with his brother, even the tickling wasn’t as unbearable as he’d make his brother believe.
Caleb sat up, looking at his baby brother lovingly. “Hey… you still up for another round? I’m it.” Philip looked at him for a moment, smiled a bit, and without warning, took off into the forest. “CATCH ME IF YOU CAN WITTEBABY!”
Caleb beamed, “OH I WILL!” and when his brother was out of sight, he softened “I’ll always find you eventually Pip…”

more months old unfinished stuff [Retired Leaders AU]
(Click for better quality)
The first two were going to be a comic of Philip flirting with a centaur, and then realizing that the centaur’s face is on his chest, and being absolutely horrified and embarrassed that he flirted with THAT.
The pics were drawn in early/mid April. I think it was originally intended as “could be either canon or AU”, but after ‘Elsewhere and Elsewhen’, it became AU-only. And even then it doesn’t quite fit anymore.
The third and fourth image were going to be a longer comic, which was meant as an illustration for the idea I talked about in this post. I still plan on using the outfit Hunter is wearing in the first one, it’s what he wore casually in the castle and outside, though I will slightly change it. The images were drawn around June.
The last three were part of a Pride Month lineup, done in June - hence the old design for Belos’s curse scar, and the presence of a scar on his lips. And also Amity and Luz’s S2 finale designs. I was going to do the gay, lesbian, bi, pan, aroace and trans/nb flags, each with two characters, but I eventually abandoned it after finishing two and half-finishing the third.
The bi flag is Edric and Luz, the pan one was going to be Steven and Alador, the aroace one was going to be Lilith and Willow, and the half trans/half nb one was going to be Adrian (trans) and Raine (nb). Some characters, as you can see, also have additional flags.
Please reblog my work.

In witch switch how do Philip’s witch friends (primarily Alador and kikimora) react to the wittebane weirdness (Philip being a strange being) initially and then after a while of getting use to it
Because I feel like making a giant murder board of trying to find out Evelyn’s “true” motivation and her connection to Ada and Luzura as a whole is not the most buzzard thing they’ve seen him do
“I once saw him eating bugs, when I asked him why he said it’s for potion research.”
Well, the thing about Witch Switch Phillip is that he's CHRONICALLY trying to fit in. They don't clock any Wittebane Weirdness (tm) initially because he hides it under twelve layers of I Am A Normal Hexside Student, I Promise, Come Closer. A good chunk of his character development is unmasking and letting himself be himself around his friends, even as that "himself" changes. And, ironically, he actually fits in better on the Isles when he embraces his weirdness and isn't trying to pretend to be "normal." Kiki (and Evelyn, obviously, but she doesn't count) is probably the only one who knows how "weird" he really is close to the beginning, and tbh, he's not weird enough to her. She's weirder. Doesn't surprise/bother her at all.
Anyway, as for his weirdness, they've already seen him go overboard on school research projects and jump DEEP down the rabbit hole of Boiling Isles Lore, so the conspiracy board definitely isn't surprising. And Alador isn't any less weird than Phillip, so Darius and Odalia are just like "yeah, some old same old. There's two of them now. Oh, look, they released a monster that fears no titan on the isles. Unsurprising."

What's weird about the whole "They didn't have time to focus on Caleb and Evelyn's backstory" argument is that a good chunk of "For the Future" relied on using Boscha and Kikimora, two antagonists who were irreverent by the end of Season 2. If there was time to focus on them, why not just cut them out so the plot is focused more on the Hexsquad learning more about Belos' past while trying to evade the Collector's forces?
honestly i'm not sure why the backstory wasn't higher on the list of things to cover in the finale
like it would be one thing if there wasn't that much focus on it, so there were no expectations for it to get more then it did, but the show kept on adding stuff to this backstory and keeps drawing attention towards it
so the fact it gives it so much attention and then leaves it entirely to be inferred is really strange to me
like this is the main antagonist's backstory, and you almost entirely can miss most of it if you're a casual watcher of the show, that's how vague it is and how much of it consists of details you can miss
like i said, i don't hate the idea of a story you can figure out in the bg, but there was SO much focus on it and so much not clear, that it's so unusual how dropped it is
like even in regards to Philip himself, it's basically not treated as relevant to his own motivations, so you kinda just wonder why give it the focus they do if they didn't really wanna use it that much?
like maybe i could forgive that on the basis of them wanting to save it for a spinoff or something, but even so, not having any payoff for it in the main series is a little irritating. Especially since the team didn't know if they would get a spinoff to tell the story at all.
tbh i think both kiki and bosha were already fine where they ended, i was satisfied with kiki's last big scene being her finally disavowing belos and playing a part in his failure, and bosha....well she hasn't mattered much since s1 and that was fine. I'm not sure why they got time....but others who needed it did not.
tho after the last posthoot, i almost get the vauge idea the crew doesn't have a full wittebane backstory.
It sounds like they have some outline for what happened, but not a full detailed story, given how dana sounded like she was spittballing the love story off the top of her head, it kinda leaves me wondering just how much thought HAD been put into the story compared to the fans.
and as someone who is working on the wittebane collab project and got assigned a role about continuity and detail, trust me when i say trying to figure out a cohesive timeline where all these details make sense is painful.
(Ex: EaE seems to be post fight cause philip is already making grimwalkers, and the door when eda found it had a scratch on it, implying it was damaged in the fight. Cept in EaE philip supposably just gathered the ingredients, so the portal wasn't made yet so like🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ )
it's a genuinely interesting story that i can't help but get the impression the crew didn't care as much about compared to the fans, which kinda stinks because the villain backstory should have a bit more thought put into it since it drives the plot as much as it does.
i love the crew, but this is a case where i do feel their priorities were skewed a little and i personally don't know why they put as much focus on caleb as they did given it doesn't get a true conclusion in the show. It does add for hunter's character and gives a plot reason to get back to the isles but outside of those two things it's kinda almost irrelevant in the end, especially with philip.

The Raven House (TOH swap AU)
I've already seen a few people create AUs on this concept, but I wanted to throw my two cents in after some thoughts on it. I will not be writing this AU, however, as it is inevitably going to involve LGBTQ content that I am not comfortable writing. That said, I'll be sharing the premise of the AU in case someone else wants to take a crack at it (I humbly request that this gets spread so that such a person may find it.
Here are the swap characters:
Edalyn Clawthorne (Head Witch Eda) - Head witch of the imperial coven, Edalyn is a powerful and eccentric witch. She likes to pull pranks on her peers and enjoys goofing off and having fun. However, this is all a front as she is struggling with the guilt of cursing her sister many years ago.
Lilith Clawthorne (Lily the Raven Lady) - A wild witch and the most powerful witch on the Boiling Isles, Lilith is a calm individual who has an academic interest in the human realm, using the portal door to obtain human artifacts to study their culture. Behind closed doors, she struggles with her raven beast curse.
Camila Noceda (Empress Belle) - Empress Belle of the Boiling Isles maintains peace and security in the demon realm with her coven system. However, her mask conceals the anger within. Hurt by the betrayal of her husband who left her for a witch and the loss of her daughter who died on the Boiling Isles, Camila blames the demon realm for both misfortunes and plans to wipe out everyone with a draining spell.
Philip Wittebane - though he is a strict parent, he cares deeply for his nephew who he adopted after the death of his father, Philip's brother, Caleb. He has a hard time connecting with his nephew but tries his best regardless, not wanting to let his deceased brother down again.
Luz Noceda (the Amber Guard) - the Empress's right hand girl (and secret daughter), Luz is actually a grimwalker, created by a grieving Camila wanting to have her daughter back again. Though the Amber Guard does not know she is a grimwalker, she is aware of her mother's plans to erase the demon realm on the Day of Unity. Sadly, though she loves her mother very much, her mother has become detached from her daughter after repeatedly watching her die and brought back to life, to the point the grimwalker is now seen as disposable.
Hunter Wittebane (the human) - Nephew of Philip Wittebane, Hunter is a curious and innovative child who became cold and distant after the recent death of his father. Following an argument with his uncle, he runs out of the house and stumbles across the portal to the demon realm and takes up an apprenticeship with Lilith, who keeps the human around for his knowledge on the human realm. Philip is initially uncomfortable with Hunter being in the demon realm, but caves and allows him to stay, figuring its a chance for him to make new friends and have the courage to explore.
Vee - Lilith's basilisk roommate, Vee is a sweet and kind girl who initially dislikes Hunter for his sour attitude, but then feels sorry for him after hearing about his family troubles and decides to be the sister he clearly needs. Despite Empress Belle never publicly declaring the basilisks to be a danger to residents of the Boiling Isles, her Imperial Coven secretly kidnaps and experiments on basilisks, and so Vee is staying with Lilith at the Raven House for protection.
King - a baby titan demon, Philip is initially unsure what to do with King. His discovery of King, who he mistakes for a "weird dog," is what lead him to find Hunter in the demon realm. He isn't entirely sure what to do about the small guy, but he keeps him around so he doesn't feel so alone with Hunter out of the house.
Hootsifer (Hooty) - Empress Belle's castle demon, he is in charge of maintaining and protecting the castle of the Empress. Arrogant and annoying, no one really likes him but they keep him around because of how powerful and how good at his job he is.
Kikimora (Kiki)- Lilith's housekeeping demon, she isn't particularly powerful, but she is cunning. She and Lilith don't always get along but they respect each other (though, Kiki feels everyone could treat her with a little more respect). She is annoyed with Hunter being brought on board, expecting him to be another mess maker to clean up after, but she is pleasantly surprised to find the house actually being tidier with him around. Though she vehemently denies it, the human kid is growing on her.
This is what I have. Message me what you think or if you want any extra details. If you decide to run with this idea, feel free to change whatever you decide.
Later!
~D

Haha, called it! Gus was able to weaponize his trauma spell with the help of Adrain Graye Vernworth’s amplifier mirror!
But, ah… showing Philip his most traumatic memories when he’s already turned into a monster might not have the intended effect of calming him down.
Tumblr media
The Owlbeast ain’t got nothing on this, this is really cursed. This looks scarier than the full monster transformation, I swear.
Philip, I sincerely hope this doesn’t come off the wrong way, but you look prettier with makeup.
Tumblr media
Philip sees Flapjack and blurts out ”Caleb!?”
Caleb is of course the name Flapjack suggested to Hunter back in Any Sport in a Storm.
But what happened just before, with Gus showing Philip the memories of him killing his brother, combined with his mental state and looking at Hunter… there is only one reason I can think of why he would say that name.
We finally learned Wittebro’s true name. Caleb Wittebane. And… I guess Flapjack used to belong to him? I seem to recall the image of the Brothers Wittebane meeting the witch that was in Jacob’s magazine in Yesterday’s Lie had a bird I said looked a bit like Flapjack.
And Caleb Wittebane was skilled at woodcarving… did he carve Flapjack himself? That’s kinda neat if that’s the case, with Hunter essentially inheriting his (kinda) father’s palisman.
Tumblr media
Oh… no. I guess there really were more than just sixteen grimwalkers, huh?
(also, Kiki’s next line is that this is where the failures end up. and now she’s there too. because she is a failure)
Tumblr media
Ooooooh… of course! The symbol in the tower was a protective glyph! That’s why the island was untraceable! That is clever.
