How Not to Look at an Eclipse
(or an alien invasion, for that matter)
0 notes
Text
In Independence Day (1996), Tiffany is played off as “the foolish friend” for attending a party to welcome the aliens.
But given the information available, hers is the most rational choice.
An alien species sufficiently advanced to cross even the shortest distance in this galaxy to our planet would be generations ahead of us technologically. Successful resistance is not a rational expectation. Either they come in peace or we’re dead. Therefore, if one is going to die either way, the option with the least suffering makes the most sense.
Besides, up till this point, the only indication their intentions are hostile is one man’s interpretation of a signal he accidentally detected.
Tiffany chose the hope of making a new friend.
All things considered, Tiffany spent the last moments of her life celebrating the start of a new and better world. She had only a split second to register a bright light and then she was gone. Not a bad way to go.

regarding your asks post - something about stephcass wedding?
d'aw!! I'm waiting on my dad to send me a laptop (Its 2-3 years old and he's got like 12. Perks of a computer engineer dad) then I'll do a whole post of Sims Screenies for their wedding
First, to everyone's surprise, Steph is the one to propse. And yes, she did catch Cass off guard and made her cry (in a great way, she was so so happy)
They'd talked about getting married and kids, but no one expected Steph to propose at a Halloween event. Babs waited to ask what Steph was dressed as (Vampire bride) and Steph said "Hopefully Cass's Fiancee."
They kept the wedding itself incredibly intimate, like under 100 people. The engagement party was huge so rich people could feel included. It was Barbie themed and all Cass's brothers were a different Ken.
Selina insisted on taking each of them dress shopping. Diana Prince, Dinah Lance, Babs, Kate Kane, Mar'i, and Nell came along to both appointments and were the best people to have.
While talking about it at family dinner, someone asked if they wanted anyone to walk them down the aisle. Cass blinked and said "Baba is walking me down the aisle...did I forget to ask?" (Bruce was fully ready to cry)
Steph asked Jason if he'd walk her down the aisle. They definitely bonded over their childhoods and tend to understand each other better than anyone. Jason did cry and isn't ashamed to admit it.
For their wedding party, Cass had Damian (her Brother of Honor and had the rings), Tim, Duke, and Mar'i. Steph had Jason (Best man), Nell, Kate, and Dick.
Helena was their flower girl and inisted Alfred walk with her.
Babs was their officiant because they couldn't imagine anyone else marrying them
There wasn't a dry eye in the house during the vows.
They let Mar'i choose their first dance song. Since Cass is a professional dancer, they didn't want to feel pressured to have a perfect dance. They just wanted something that felt like them
She chose "Carry You Home"by Alex Warren. "I choose us everytime" is the line that sold her. Because if there's one thing Mar'i knows about her aunties, its that few people ever chose them for good reasons growing up. They have always chosen each other.
Their reception lasted all night, no villains interrupting. No Crisis. Nothing blowing up. Just good times.
Instead of the normal speeches by certain people, they had an open mike portion, with anyone who wanted to say something getting two minutes.
Damian made everyone cry with his. Just a simple quote from "The Chaos of Stars" by Kiersten White.
“I didn't fall in love with you. I walked into love with you, with my eyes wide open, choosing to take every step along the way. I do believe in fate and destiny, but I also believe we are only fated to do the things that we'd choose anyway. And I'd choose you; in a hundred lifetimes, in a hundred worlds, in any version of reality, I'd find you and I'd choose you”

Did anyone else ever watch Saved by the Bell: The College Years? I have to admit that I kind of love it, completely unironically. I realize there are lots of people who have a genuine affinity for the original series, and I do too, to an extent, but I haven't really watched that since I was a kid, whereas I get the urge to rewatch the single season of TCY every few years or so. I'm not entirely sure what it is about it that I find so appealing - it's not like it's outrageously funny, and it is occasionally very cringey. For instance, the canned laugh track is legitimately out of control. Anyone who watched the original series would probably have expected this, but considering that this was a prime time sitcom aimed at a slightly older demographic, the (presumably non-existent) studio audience is very vocal for every little thing, and it's a bit much. Also, Zack is truly a sociopath. He was in the original show too of course, probably even more egregiously so, but the fact that this series was going for a more realistic, grounded vibe makes his deranged behaviour stand out even more (although it must also be said that this version of Zack was very much a part of my sexual awakening as a young gay kid, and so I've historically been willing to overlook a lot of that).
But having said all that, I still just find the show to be a lot of fun and actually very comforting. Some of it's nostalgia, because watching stuff like this as a kid gave me a really specific idea of what young adulthood would be like. But it's definitely more than that. There's something about how contrived the whole setup is, and how the nature of it being a sitcom just makes everything feel so predictable and safe in ways that real life never is. The set is a perfect encapsulation of what any kid in the early-mid 90s would see as the perfect dorm room. I legit love the characters, I think they were honestly very well-developed and the chemistry and acting were genuinely great. Tiffani Amber Thiessen, as usual, kills it, even with material that isn't exactly Shakespeare. And I especially love Kiersten Warren. Bob Golic as well is a lot better than I think anyone expected him to be.
Not to get too deep about Saved by the Bell: The College Years (too late), but I guess I just really feel like we fucked up by letting the sitcom become an endangered species. There is nothing like this in the television landscape of the moment, which is almost impressive given how many fucking shows there are across all networks and streaming services. There's nothing this earnestly corny, nothing this stereotypically contrived, nothing this brazenly free of substance. Shows like this weren't afraid to be rose-coloured versions of real life - offering viewers a glimpse at the way they wish life could feel, where familiar struggles were dealt with, but always neatly tied up within 22 minutes. It's not realistic, but that was never the point. Even as I watched the show at 10 years old, fantasizing about how my own college years might be like the ones depicted in this show, I knew that in reality they wouldn't be. I don't think television owes us realism, and in fact I think that a bit of grounded escapism can be a lot more fulfilling and engaging than it gets credit for, and can also offer more catharsis than expected.
It feels like the only sitcoms we get now are a lot more self-aware, and are either so heightened that they forego realism altogether, or are too realistic to be breezy fun. I thought that the recent Saved by the Bell reboot was actually pretty great, but I can't deny that I missed the format of these older series, which didn't feel the need to telegraph that they knew how silly they were. We all knew it was silly. it was like an unspoken agreement between the audience and the show itself. You just don't see that anymore.
I don't know, maybe this just makes me seem old and out of touch. But I can't help that television from before I was born (or at least from before I was old enough to be watching it) just speaks to me in ways that current stuff never seems to. And it's not just because it's old - it's because it embraces a format that speaks to me, despite having long since fallen out of favour. But I can't be the only one who finds legitimate, sincere value in these old shows outside of the nostalgia factor, right?
Anyway, this post was originally about Saved by the Bell: The College Years and I fully went off the rails. Probably because I'm a touch buzzed, so you'll have to forgive my rambling. On the plus side, if this show didn't get cancelled, we probably wouldn't have been graced with TAT on 90210, since she went on to do that show right after TCY was cancelled. When God closes a door, he opens a window. Or something.
#i need to go to bed#but before i do - fun fact:#within the first year or two of me starting this blog i toyed with the idea of doing a blitz of sbtb:tcy posts but never did#a number of those posts still sit in my drafts to this day#maybe one day they'll finally see the light of day

saved by the wedding bells
Saved by the Bell: Wedding in Las Vegas Review
IMDb Summary: In this conclusion of the long running series it finally happens: Kelly and Zack will marry. Zack's parents are against the early commitment and Kelly's parents can't afford it, so only the gang travels to Las Vegas for the wedding.
By now, I think it’s pretty obvious that I love the entire Saved by the Bell series, for all of its silliness and crazy plots. But for some reason the fun and campiness of the show just does not translate over well to full length movies.
First off, like the Hawaii movie, it had a different vibe than the regular episodes. The cinematography reminded me of a mid-90’s CW teen drama - specifically, the scenes where the guys revisited Bayside High and where Zack was at his house with his parents had the look and feel of a 7th Heaven episode (by the way, that was NOT Zack’s room).
Secondly, there was just way too much happening in this movie than there needed to be. There were a bunch of schemes (naturally) attempted by Zack to try to earn back his money that he lost, which he needed in order to pay for the wedding. There were the sub-plots, one involving Slater, a girl and the mafia, and another having to do with Screech as a male escort - both of which seemed to serve no ultimate purpose other than to give Slater and Screech something to do. Then there were things that just didn’t make sense; Kelly and Lisa ended up picking up a random hippie in the desert who happened to also be going to the Vegas to the EXACT same hotel that The Gang was staying in - I mean, what are the odds!? Also: 19 year olds aren’t technically allowed to be running around Vegas casinos. And how were they able to throw together and organize a wedding AND invite all the guests that they did all within the span of (I assume) a couple days? Were all of these guests just sitting around doing nothing, just waiting be invited and make the 3-4 hour drive to the Morris-Kapowski wedding? I mean, I guess so. And of course there was the cheese factor - the cheesiest being the Zack and Kelly montage of all of their moments together over the years. Needless to say, the ending is as predictable as you would expect.
Despite all of that, though, I really enjoyed this movie - a whole lot more than the Hawaii movie, for sure. I loved the fact that it was set in Vegas, that it involved (most of) the original Gang, and that they brought back a bunch of familiar faces - Zack’s parents Melanie (Melody Rogers) and Derek (John Sanderford), Mr. Belding, Mike the R.A., Alex, and of course Jessie! And you know, all’s well that ends well.
This movie was definitely made for people like me who grew up watching The Gang and are familiar with all of the crazy mischief they get into - those who have never watched or liked the show probably wouldn’t appreciate it as much. As a fan of the show, I was so glad that this movie happened. I think it was such a great way to tie up the series, give closure to the main characters (especially after the cliffhanger ending of The College Years), and to give the fans what they want to see. I mean what true fan wouldn’t want to see Zack and Kelly end up together? (Ugh, they are so cute.) In the end it was bittersweet - as Slater said in one of the final scenes of the movie, sadly “It’s the end of an era” - but it was an awesome era - and this was a great ending to a fun series, which certainly made the 8 year old in me very happy.

📽 13 Going on 30 (2004)
We take a break from the Marvel movie marathon to bring you one of the best romantic comedies to exist. This movie is so fun! The characters are likable (except the ones who aren’t supposed to be), the story is fun, and the lessons to be learned are pretty obvious. It’s a great movie about the importance of not growing up too fast.
Sex/nudity: 3/10 (there’s some sex talk, but it’s all played for laughs, some kissing)
Language: 2/10 (really not bad at all, probably because it’s supposed to be a 13 yo in a 30 yo body)
Violence: 0/10 (this category doesn’t really apply to this movie)
Overall rating: 9/10
