Hooo boy do I have an anecdote to add.

So I got a kidney transplant in December of 2021. Possibly the only good thing about American healthcare is that the moment you start dialysis or get your kidney transplant, you automatically get signed up for Medicare, and you're eligible for Medicaid. If you have other health insurance that remains your primary, and Medicare your secondary for 31 months. I do not know why it's 31. Seems like an odd number to me.

My transplant team at the hospital also signed me up immediately for the Prograf copay card. Prograf is one of two ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY anti-rejection meds that I take every day, 12 hours apart. I have to get labs done regularly to make sure my Prograf levels are right. Prograf is very expensive so the copay card paid for everything. Everything was a bit of a blur last December and January after my surgery so I'm glad they set it up for me, but I do not have any details about how they did it.

When the Prograf copay card expired after a year I found out that the price for my meds would be over $600 a month until I reach my $3000 deductible. (That's almost chump change to my coworker's meds that are $7000 per 30 days). News flash: I don't have that kind of money.

I needed to reactivate the card by calling a number. When they asked if I had any government insurance I said yes, of course, because I have Medicare as my secondary insurance. A reminder: all kidney transplant patients automatically get Medicare. They immediately said I was ineligible to get the Prograf copay card. So I contacted my hospital and they said that as long as I didn't have Medicare part D I should be able to get it because part D pays for medications. I called back, told them I didn't have part D and they still said that I couldn't have any part of Medicare to get the Prograf card, despite the last year of having both. I called the hospital back and they said "huh that's weird" and said they'll do some more research. So now either the people who could reactivate the card don't know what they're talking about, or a rule changed in the last year that the people at the hospital don't know about. Both seem unlikely honestly.

So now I'm going to be switching to the off brand of prograf which will be less expensive but almost $150 a month which I still can't afford. I've been waiting two days to hear back from the financial liaison at the hospital and she has not returned my calls. Now I am quickly running out of the Prograf I have left and I don't know how quickly this will be resolved but it needs to be done soon. I'm not even taking it right. I'm supposed to be taking 1.5mg twice a day but ran out of the 0.5 capsules so I'm taking 1mg in the morning and 2mg at night.

So to sum up: my life saving medication is too expensive. No one knows if or how I'm supposed to get financial assistance. I'm not getting a return call from the person who is supposed to help me. And I'm running out of meds.

Meanwhile the pharmaceutical company is making bank and insurance just wants their deductible, my health and life be damned.

If the brain in the vat chooses the left side of the track, the trolley will definitely hit and kill a railman on the left side of the track, "Leftie" and will hit and destroy ten beating hearts on the track that could (and would) have been transplanted into ten patients in the local hospital that will die without donor hearts. These are the only hearts available, and the brain is aware of this, for the brain knows hearts. If the railman on the left side of the track lives, he too will kill five men, in fact the same five that the railman on the right would kill. However, "Leftie" will kill the five as an unintended consequence of saving ten men: he will inadvertently kill the five men rushing the ten hearts to the local hospital for transplantation. A further result of "Leftie's" act would be that the busload of orphans will be spared. Among the five men killed by "Leftie" are both the man responsible for putting the brain at the controls of the trolley, and the author of this example. If the ten hearts and "Leftie" are killed by the trolley, the ten prospective heart-transplant patients will die and their kidneys will be used to save the lives of twenty kidney-transplant patients, one of whom will grow up to cure cancer, and one of whom will grow up to be Hitler. There are other kidneys and dialysis machines available, however the brain does not know kidneys, and this is not a factor.

Assume that the brain's choice, whatever it turns out to be, will serve as an example to other brains-in-vats and so the effects of his decision will be amplified. Also assume that if the brain chooses the right side of the fork, an unjust war free of war crimes will ensue, while if the brain chooses the left fork, a just war fraught with war crimes will result. Furthermore, there is an intermittently active Cartesian demon deceiving the brain in such a manner that the brain is never sure if it is being deceived.

Like, I have this fic that lives in my head (that I don’t have the ability to write) where Maddie gets sick with TVsicknessitus and needs a kidney transplant, and naturally Buck is a match (cos kidneys are much easier to match than bone marrow) but she doesn’t want to let him do it because she knows the damage it could do to him psychologically, thinking that he only has value if he’s of use, if he’s giving part of himself. But he finally convinces her (in typically dramatic, tearful Buckley fashion), and everything goes fine, and they do their adorable pinkie shake while in recovery after the surgery. But then the Buckley parents are there, and sure they’re trying, but they can’t help but still be awful, and they tell Buck they’re proud of him for what he’s done for Maddie, and it’s the first time he actually feels like they mean it, and while he’d never ever regret saving Maddie, it hurts how much it still hurts to know that’s his only real value to them, just like Maddie was worried about.

I’ve spent the last….17 years really dealing with chronic illness. And as stupid as it sounds I got my third chance and wish I hadn’t. I got my first transplant at 17. So from 14-17 I was in highschool having a hard time making friends because I missed school so often. Doctors appointments, aeronesp injections every week, additional surgery and dialysis. Preparing for organ transplant with the “you’ll be better after this”. I wasn’t invited to parties or have a lot of friends so I was basically invisible in highschool. Then you go to college and they feed you the bullshit line of “things will get better” but again I dont drink because kidney issues and then I got sick with pneumonia 4 times leading to additional issues. So again I put my head down and did the work I had to to graduate and didn’t make a ton of friends. I got out of university and started a decent job until I got fired for taking a day off to go to the doctor because I had pneumonia again. Leading to 2020 when I got laid off for asking for accommodations to work from home during covid (everyone else was laid off a week later) and I started a new job in Dec/2020. I was laid off Feb/2022 and then rushed into the hospital where my transplanted kidney failed…..I had done what they asked and it still failed. So I started dialysis and did everything they wanted. Got peritonitis 3 times, incredibly sick from low blood pressure where all I did was dialysis, sleep, and repeat. Now last November I got another kidney and I should be thankful because it’s another chance. But after that I had an allergic reaction to the meds causing me to be hospitalized with inflammation for a week, hydronephrosis where the transplanted kidney was swollen, then Covid, and now incredibly depression because I feel alone. 16 years later from my initial work up and I’ve lost all of my friends, and this “third chance” doesn’t even feel worth it anymore. They should have just let me end it in 2022 because this isn’t existing. All I do anymore is bloodwork, sleep, and panic about hospital bills.

This isn’t a post for really anyone I just wanted to write something because I’m over all of this.

have almost thoughts about how i find the like....narrative on here that if you have chronic "zebra" conditions youd want a doctor like House and wouldnt sue for malpractice bc at least youd have a doctor that cares about whats wrong with you but lets take it one step further. so often he does NOT give a shit about the patient and actively endangers them frequently with his god damn heoric era of medicine approach? non zero amount of times he gets a diagnosis but it comes too late, or he gets a diagnosis after their first wrong 3 guesses of the episode shut down the patients kidneys and they either have to get a transplant or they are just, doomed due to other preexisting conditions etc? idk. i know ppl are almost certainly exaggerating and just letting off steam about the very real failures of our current medical systems and the ableism baked in and All That Shit. i just think its weird how ppl romanticize House who STILL, FREQUENTLY, MULTIPLE EPISODES will actively dismiss shit in the exact way that is a problem in our current system, especially when hes being Forced Against His Will To See Clinic Parients, he loves to be dismissive as fuck of symptoms and if he was a real doctor i think he'd be fucking 50/50 on cases he Notices Something To Dig Into vs cases he dismisses as an Anxious Hysterical Woman Who Wants Attention, the only reason he's Right so frequently in his snap judgements is cos it reinforces the narrative. its like a crime drama that has the mastermind serial killer masterfully using "loopholes" and lawyering up all sneaky and dodging Justice and if only our poor little cop protags were allowed to do A TEENY BIT of Justified Police Brutality, they could Save Lives!

and like sometimes in the show they will have a patient die despite his efforts to narratively punish him. not to mention, i think its been at least mildly brought up and glossed over how much they absolutely do not think about insurance costs for these ppl for the insane amount of tests that find nothing and Wrong Medications To Force A Diagnosis they use? i think it was brought up once in the episode following a day in the life of cuddy where she had to fight a lawsuit bc a guys insurance like didnt cover his thumb being reattached but chase reattached it anyway while in surgery cos it was The Right Thing To Do and the guy didnt have the money to cover it and the insurance wouldnt pay unless he sued the hospital or whatever. thats like the only time its come up. whereas like frequently the doctor I go to for osteopathic manipulation tries to check in with me and make sure im covered by insurance etc and that im not going to go broke or get buried in medical debt seeing her.

idk. just some Thoughts. not a defense of our current system and all the flaws it enables and enforces etc. his approach to medicine is really reminiscent to me of what I know of the Heroic Era Of Medicine which i dont...love? and hes framed on here as being an asshole but would kill for his patients to get them a diagnosis etc. but hes definitely extremely paternalistic to patients ? and despite some good clippable lines about ableism and being against eugenics, it honestly feels like his stance on that is kind of a toss up.

do something completely different. if im stuck and not feeling it i like go on a walk, take a shower, make food (often also helps bc i will just like forget to do those things yay adhd) or watch a new movie or show, make some other kind of art like paint or crochet. i dont think it helps to try and force creativity and usually it just means that the tank is empty and needs to be filled back up so i try to do inspiring or relaxing things.

s1e02: the sheer concept of consultants searching for an absconded patient. where are your wardies and security officers??

s1e03: these people are highly qualified specialists and theyre... running their own pathology tests. do they literally have not a single patient on the ward they could be seeing??

i most of the time understand your frustration when people are being rude but someone inquiring about their commission and when it'll be delivered is not rude no matter if it's on anon. people have paid for a service. you have a responsiblity to your customers. that is what they are: customers. they're not your friends, they don't owe you understanding and blind trust when you say their order is going to be late because you're sick

I might miss points but i'm going to try my best to answer this fully. But I will say. No people don't have to take my "excuses" they can, at any time, if they've paid already (i don't ask for payment up front its up to people if they want to pay whenever. whatever is comfortable for them) ask me to refund them and get their commission elsewhere. All I said in my response was that I cannot help you on anon because I don't know what commission you are right now. And that people will be getting their wip pages if they dont have it already and apologised if tumblr did not send them the message i sent everyone when i was hospitilised. Even if your comm is 90% done literally i will refund you and you can get it elsewhere? that's always been my thing. it's why i'm usually like no rush/pay at the end.

My commissions aren't a business. I'm tip whatever you want, pay whenever you want, and you'll still get a wip page even if you don't pay until the end. I've made 0 secret about the surgeries and the hospitalisation over pneumonia lately. If that's not good enough or i'm not professional enough nobody has to stick with me? If i'm late/sick I do extra gifs, extra seasons, ask what other movie the person wants as an apology and ty for their patience. I've fully refunded before when I was 10 gifs away from finishing nbd.

A-Z Hurt/Sick Jay Halstead Prompts

(Please keep in mind that I threw these together years ago and some are very dodgy, dont make alpt of sense, and kinda embarrassing. But honestly someone might see something and do something awesome!

I also posted these over on Ao3 under a different account name😊)

I love reading hurt/comfort fics and a while ago planned to start writing an A-Z Jay whump fic centered around Jay and Will's relationship mostly, with Connor aswell as I love his and Will's friendship. However with a crazy amount of college work I never got around to doing it. I see so many requests for prompts so I decided to post my planned chapters incase anyone would like some ideas. Please feel free to use these prompts as randomly as you like, choose just one or make a collection, I really wouldn't mind. I would love to see the stories written 😊 (If you could tag me if you write one that would be great because I'd love it read it)

A- Allergic Reaction

(Jay has a reaction to meds after being treated at med. Voight stays with him)

B- Bruised and Beaten Brothers

(Jay and Will are taken and tortured as retaliation for a mission Jay did in the past)

C- Cough

(Jay gets a cold but then develops a really a bad cough because he has weak lungs from being waterboarded will in Afghanistan. He tries to hid it but Connor sees him one day in the waiting room of Med waiting to interview a suspect being treated, so he insists on checking him out only to find out how sick he is)

D-Dental Surgery

(Jay gets tortured and has teeth pulled. Needs emergency surgery to fix damage and stop bleeding)

E- Exhausted

(Jay overworks himself, runs down his immune system, gets sick, and collapses. Voight takes care of him and calls Will)

F- Fever

(Jay gets really sick and gets a high fever. Will helps him through his nightmares)

G- Gastroenteritis

(Jay gets really sick. He can't stop vomiting and gets dehydrated so Hailey takes him to Med)

H- Hallucinations and High fever

Jay is kidnapped and tortured and starts imagining the team coming to rescue him. When they actually come he is injured and is becoming ill. He doesn't recognise them and thinking he's back in Afghanistan freaks out. They call Will at Med and he comes to treat him and brings Connor too to treat the trauma injuries)

I- Injury

(Jay gets badly injured and rushed to Med. Will freaks out while he's in surgery with Connor)

J- Jugular (Jay gets stabbed in the neck and his Jugular os injured. Voight stops him from bleeding out until help arrives. Connor fixes him up at Med while Will worries)

J-Just a sniffle

(Jay catches a cold. Will and the team tell him to rest, but he doesn't and he gets really sick with a bad chest infection or pneumonia. He reaches out to Connor because he doesn't want Will to know he got so bad. Connor has to csll Will because Jay starts having PTSD flashbacks as a result of a high fever and Connor needs Will's help. Then Will and Connor look after him)

K- Kidney transplant

(Jay gets stabbed in the kidney and it's beyond repair. Will donates and Connor does the surgery and is worried about the brothers)

L - Lungs

(Jay has damaged lungs from previous chest infection and torture while in the rangers. Anytime he gets a cold it goes straight to his chest. Voight notices this after Jay gets multiple small colds but always ends up super sick. Will tells him and he helps him look after Jay and Voights looks out for him in the future.)

M- Meds

(Jay has a really bad injury, like broken ribs-really painful, but refuses pain meds. Connor tries to convince him to take them because he is passing out from pain and vomiting it's so bad. He brings in Will to help talk to Jay and finds out about his fear of needles from being tortured. He also hates taking pain pills because it makes him fuzzy and he gets flashbacks)

N- Nightmares

(Jay always gets nightmares in hospital. Connor being his doctor notices and gets him to open up.  Connor gets upset when Jay gets upset. Will comforts them. Connor asks how he knows to calm Jay down and tells of how he's used to doing it for Jay since he got home)

O- Open Wound

(Jay gets shot, only a graze, and plays it off. It doesn't heal and gets infected. Will notices Jay has a fever when he gets home from work. Jay plays it off. He is in Med checking up on a suspect and he takes off his jacket cause he's burning up and Connor notices the badly bandage is wound and everything comes out. He calls Will after he treats Jay. Will rushes to Med and Maggie helps him calm down and takes him to Jay)

P- Pneumonia

(Jay has a cold and is sick at work. Voight sends him home but he gets kidnapped on the way home. He gets kept and tortured in a cold place and develops pneumonia. Will and the team find him and he's really sick. He's too afraid to go to the hospital because the last time he was sick like this was after an accident in the army. Will treats him at home and has to call Connor to help and bring meds.

Q- Quick Surgery

(Jay is undercover and is injured. He calls Will to fix him up in the middle of the night before anyone he's under with notices)

R-  Running towards a problem

(Jay and Will go for a run but get kidnapped. The team find them and bring Connor to treat thier injuries)

S- Sick

(Jay catches a cold. He's staying with Connor and Will and trys to leave because he doesn't want them to get sick. They tell him not to worry as they are always around sick people. He ends up getting really sick and they look after him and he ends up being glad he stayed. He gets really emotional and upset because he thought no one cared about him anymore after his PTSD)

T- Tetnus Shot

(Jay gets a cut and needs a tetnus shot but is terrified of needles. Connor has never seen Jay in such a panic, unstable state. He calls Will to come in even though he is off shift. Will rushes in and calms his brother down with a hug)

T- Tracheotomy

(Jay gets waterboarded and then gets a chest infection. He gets really ill and even Connor can't intubate him so he must get a trach. Will is super worried but Connor is there for him and is a good friend when he too gets sick from the stress. When Jay wakes up he freaks out as he jaf a tracheotomy before in the army after the crash that he and mouse were in. Connor removes it and helps fix him up. Jay then notices Will in the hospital bed next to him and feels guilty he got sick because of the stress he put him under. Connor is there for Jay to lean on for support.

U- Unusal Suspect

Jay gets accused of a crime. Other cops turn on him and attack him. Will looks after him and believes him

V- Virus

Jay catches the flu going around the district. Everyone else is just a little sick so they don't believe Jay when he says needs to take it easier because of his weak immune system. He gets embarrassed and feels inferior so pushes himself and he gets really sick. Will gets mad at the team for not listening to Jay

W- Worried Big Brother

Jay is rushed into surgery after a bust gone wrong. Will is worried when no other doctor is available and has to do a procedure in the ED. Maggie rings Connor to tell him his two favourite brother need his help. Connor then rushes in to complete the surgery and everything works out. Jay stays in the hospital for a few days after getting an infection and fever which leads to flashbacks. Will blames himself and never leaves Jay's side. Connor helps treat Jay and comforts Will.

X- Xray

Jay gets beaten up. Claims he's fine at Med. Will makes him get an X-ray to see he has broken ribs and punctured lung. He is impressed with his pain tolerance but also scared as to why he can tolerate so much. Connor goes through his medical history with Will when Jay says it's ok.

Y- Yelled at

Jay is verbally abused by other cops for having PTSD. He breaks down at work and Voight calls Will after finding Jay with an injured hand after punching a wall or something. Will comes to comfort him and treat him.

Z-Zoster Virus

Jay gets the shingles after rescuing kids and one of them had the chickenpox. He gets really sick with a high fever. Will notices the rash and helps take care of him.Will catches it too and Conner gets worried when he doesn't show up for work and won't answer his phone. He finds the brothers really sick at Will's apartment and takes care of them)
