heres your random frustrating fact of the day
#explanation: metric usually uses powers of 10 but data is naturally binary. so theres disagreement over whether to measure data in powers of#1000 (like every other SI standardized unit) or 1024 (very close to 1000 for convenience; however naturally exactly accurate to data units)#usually powers of 1000 are measured with SI prefixes like kilobyte (kB) megabyte (MB) etc#while powers of 1024 are measured in kibibytes (kiB) mebibytes (MiB) etc#apple and some distros of linux like ubuntu choose to standardize on the si style. most other unixlike standardizes on binary style#as this excerpt says WINDOWS SPECIFICALLY AND EXCLUSIVELY chooses to standardize on binary style but displays in si units... which is why#disks that are exactly 1 terabyte will display as mysteriously missing a lot of storage space. because theyre literally using it wrong#(not exactly exclusively because RAM is also counted in binary units but referred to in decade units)#(matters less though because the differential is literally exponentially less)

(HI-FI Rush Post) Consider:
A nickname for 808 being "kibibyte".
Because it sounds like kitty/kibby + byte, but also a kibibyte is equivalent to 1024 bytes, and is used in the context of binary systems (conversely, a kilobyte is just 1000 bytes).
This post was brought to you by me and @energyscarf
#hi-fi rush#808 hi-fi rush#SHE IS A KIBBY. BUT ALSO SHE IS A ROBOT. CONSIDER.#KIBIBYTE. OR KIBBIBYTE. BOTH? BOTH. BOTH ARE GOOD.

My army of robot cats can do 50KB/s when hungry, and they get about 2.4% faster if I give them kibble.
Starting the rumor that KB stands for kiloboop, MB for megaboop, and so on
#this is probably too obscure a pun#the joke is about the kibibyte#which is a unit that comes up every now and then#and is 1024 bytes#i.e. 1 KiB = 1.024KB#it comes up because most things in computers have powers of two in them#so a lot of the time it's actually easier to use KiB than KB because you'll have an exact number of them

I would take 'kibibyte' more seriously if it didn't sound so much like 'Kibbles N Bits'.
Kilobyte [Explained]
Transcript
Caption: There's been a lot of confusion over 1024 vs 1000, kbyte vs kbit, and the capitalization for each. Here, at last, is a single, definitive standard:
[table of various kinds of kilobytes] Symbol : Name : Size : Notes. kB : Kilobyte : 1024 bytes OR 1000 bytes : 1000 bytes during leap years, 1024 otherwise. KB : Kelly-Bootle standard unit : 1012 bytes : compromise between 1000 and 1024 bytes. KiB : Imaginary kilobyte : 1024 √-1 bytes : used in quantum computing. kb : Intel kilobyte : 1023.937528 bytes : calculated on Pentium F.P.U.. Kb : Drivemaker's kilobyte : currently 908 bytes : shrinks by 4 bytes each year for marketing reasons KBa : Baker's kilobyte : 1152 bytes : 9 bits to the byte since you're such a good customer.

Thank you so much @sergeantnarwhalwrites for the tag!
No pressure tagging: @honeysoiair @apocalypsewriters @druidx @arigalefantasynovels @marlenadutch @j-1173 @pure-solomon @unstablewifiaccess @ashley-woods @words-after-midnight @aalinaaaaaa @vaultofqueenorion @ehlaaaaaaaa @tlbodine & my open tag!
Because I've done this previously, I'm going onto another character. I've tagged some new people to mix it up a little, but feel free to ignore this or message me to not be tagged again. Also, you can do this for yourself or a character, if you'd like. I'm doing it for Kib from StormWatcher. No spoilers, but I've hidden it under the cut for length's sake.
1. Are you named after anyone?
Well, my real first name-- Elbin-- was just one my parents picked out. But my mom nicknamed me Kib after the kibibyte. She was a bit of a nerd.
2. When was the last time you cried?
A long time ago?
3. Do you have kids?
No.
4. Do you use sarcasm?
Only at every opportunity.
5. What's the first thing you notice about people?
How comfortable they are with storms.
6. What's your eye color?
Blue.
7. Scary movies or happy endings?
Scary movies. But we hardly ever get anything, so I'll take what I can get.
8. Any special talents?
I'm really quick with storm recognition patterns.
9. Where were you born?
Like... Indiana, I think?
10. What are your hobbies?
Don't really have any of those. I pretty much spend any free time I can get learning new storm patterns.
11. Have you any pets?
We don't have the extra resources. (And Mam would throw a fit.)
12. What sports do you play/have played?
None.
13. How tall are you?
5'4, I think.
14. Favorite subject in school?
Well, we don't really have any subjects, but the StormWatcher tests are my favorite.
15. Dream job?
StormWatcher. But don't tell Mam or Merieh.

the 2006 planet redefinition is every bit as much political bullshit to the detriment of humanity as the 1995 invention of the kibibyte

One of the first computer games I ever played, released in December of 1992, came on a set of four 3.5-inch floppy discs. That means the entire game could have consisted of no more than 5760 KiB (kibibytes) of data, assuming the floppies were the standard type.
Today I noticed the installation size of a game on Steam that was released in April 2019. It takes up over 87 GiB (gibibytes). If I wanted to put that on 3.5-inch floppy discs, I would need sixty-three thousand, four hundred, and sixty-two of them. That's 62.528 cubic feet, 1770.59 liters, or 1.77059 cubic meters of floppy discs. That is an absolutely insane filesize.

what's a mundane thing that makes you irrationally mad for no reason?
#e3q3.vbs#mine is the fact people couldn't agree how many bytes a megabyte is so they had to create a new unit#like‚ i know it's useful for math and stuff but#still.#what the fuck is a kibibyte?

the reason i operate with feet and inches is because they feel very intuitive for small-scale objects. the kinds of objects that you'd work with on a day-to-day basis.
if someone came up and said "1 foot and 7 inches" or "about half a foot" i immediately have a grasp on the length they're referring to
so, its not like feet/inches is completely dysfunctional. it works perfectly fine at 'usual' scales.
i'm not saying metric isn't intuitive. all i'm saying is that we already have an intuition built around feet/inches, so why not leverage it when communicating to each other?
of course metric becomes more ergonomic when working with complex physics problems and working with scales that aren't easily intuitive.
like, if i had to solve a problem involving black holes and space ships, i would use metric. the base 10 makes it easier to work with.
with all that said, there are a ton of niche unit systems out there, with all kinds of quirks. sometimes those quirks genuinely have reasons or turn out to be useful in those niche environments.
take computers for an example. a kibibyte is 1024 bytes. a mebibyte is 1024*1024 bytes. working in increments of 1024 turns out to be incredibly useful when working with low-level hardware stuff. is that "cursed"? is it "weird" for me to have all these units in my head?
tldr
Feet/inches are not as dysfunctional as they seem if you're at regular human scales (e.g. "half a foot") but yes they can get dysfunctional if you scale them way beyond what humans normally look at
Learning metric isn't hard, which is why we're totally fine using it when the need arises (e.g. science problems)
There are way more niche unit systems out there, which have niche uses. I'd rather use "kibibytes" than limp around with metric just because some guy said its "simpler" to have everything in base 10 no matter what
apparently europeans have the impression that US Americans never learn the metric system.

It’s been a while, hasn’t it? For those not in the know, this is like the second or third post on this blog. It’s been AGES since it was last updated. Recently @local-robotgirlthing asked for some robosona names, so I went through computing history & electronic components to pull out my favs :>
Enjoy!
