Made my first khatchapuri tonight in a bake fest with @ibecomeeclectic. 昔ジョージア出身の友達がいて、アドベンチャースポーツをやったりしていたらしくすごくカッコいい人。 あの人の友達になりたくて、自分自身傘を使っているのに、あの人が「雨が降る時は傘をさしても意味がないから、俺はレインコートが好き」と教えてくれたら、私も「ええ、たしかに」と自分を否定する。

I wanted to be his friend so bad, that one time when he told me that “umbrella doesn’t work in the rain, I prefer raincoat”, I nodded and said “true true”.

Homemade Khatchapuri

Italy is really nice. Sort of like a knockoff Georgia. They have a kind of khatchapuri called “pizza” and make a cheese like sulguni the locals call “mozzarella”. Highly recommended!

Zelkova carpinifolia – kaukasisk zelkova Nu blir det nyheter. Malmö har blivit med ny art, med ny träd-app och snart även med ny trädbok! Det viktigaste först. Smaka på orden, Kaukasisk zelkova. Blotta namnet ger rysningar av välbehag. Sällan har svensk fonologi klingat så klart. Vokaler och konsonanter i ljuvlig symfoni. Sedan drygt ett år har Malmö sitt första. Äntligen kan du nu högt skrika dess namn när du besöker Folkets park, utan att nån tror du är tossig. Den kaukasiska zelkovans hemvist kan du säkert klura ut själv. I landet som gett oss khatchapuri, orange naturvin och som agerat sidenvägens europeiska mynning finner du det. I låglänta stekheta krattskogar, tillsammans med orientalisk avenbok, ormar sig denna almsläkting mot skyn. Blott 10 m hög, för trots att den föredrar sol finns svalkan i kollektivet. En knepig balansgång det där. Anledningen till att den länge lyst med sin frånvaro i Svea rike är då vi trott att den varit för nära besläktad med vår alm och därför dömd att gå samma öde till mötes. Individen i Folkets park kan till och med vara resultatet av en felleverans, där det egentligen var meningen att den japanska zelkovan (Zelkova serrata), som bedöms vara sjukdomsresistent, egentligen skulle stå. Tur för Malmö att vi numera inte tror att kaukasiern är så mottaglig. För detta är ett riktigt stiligt träd. Flagnande, nästan pixliga stammar. Små, friskt gröna sträva blad, utsökt loberade. Detta blir mer än sällan ett flerstammigt träd, så även om Malmö än så länge endast har en individ, kommer vi få mycket träd för pengarna. Den första bilden är på individen i Folkets park, de nästkommande är från Kaukasiska zelkova skogar. En liten försmak av vad vi har att vänta. Kul va? Just det, fler nyheter. Disneyland

15th September 2018: A fractured night’s sleep, we are at a considerable altitude. Weirdly, I dream that I awake punctuated by periods of dreamless sleep then awake at 09:00 strangely refreshed. The road builders are long gone and after a couple of cups of strong Gueroli tea we are back on the dreadful road towards Akhaltsikhe.

Soon we stop at a remote cafe for a wonderful breakfast of thick, sweet Turkish coffee, imeruli khatchapuri and a game of backgammon. Mama is wielding a razor sharp axe, stoking a fire and making a brew of home-grown, fresh tomato sauce.

On and on through more stunning scenery until eventually, hooray, we rejoin the tarmac. Over the last 24hours the car has taken an absolute pounding that it was never designed for and come out the other side relatively unscathed.

Akhaltsikhe has been our target for two days of testing driving. When we get there the town offers little more attraction than a crossroads to Vardzia and Borjomi, dominated by a castle fortress. The guide book describes the fortress as “Disneyfied”. Another of the ex-President’s redevelopment projects. Over-redeveloped to many of the locals’ taste. We pass through.

Next stop Vardzia. Site of a fortress carved into a limestone cliff- more than 600 rooms for different purposes are cut into the rock, tunnels, halls, stairwell, stables, wineries, refectory and pharmacy, place of worship, frescoes. Even with today’s H&S conscious protections you get a real glimpse and understanding as to how lives were lived here in the 10th century.

Leaving Vardzia we contemplate a couple of rural B&Bs but decide to enjoy the tarmac while we have some and press on to Borjomi, arriving just as the light begins to fail. Sue has found us a perfectly adequate apartment and by 20:00 we are tucking into more sumptuous food and a carafe of sweet wine from the helpful menu at Cafe Pesvebi.[1]
