17/08/2024-Beautiful fuchsia in the garden and from our visit to Shipton Bellinger today stunning Wall Brown, a smashing view, upright hedge-parsley, a gorgeous Brown Hairstreak one of my first of the year it was amazing to see this exuberant species for a fourth year running here today having never seen one prior to 2021 I feel so lucky and scabious.

Other highlights at Shipton Bellinger were Brown Argus, Small Heath, Meadow Browns, Brimstones, Speckled Wood, Fox moth and Cinnabar moth caterpillars, bees, Roesel's bush cricket, Raven, Red Kite, Buzzard, Kestrel, Bullfinches, Chiffchaff, rosebay willowherb, a fair few precious harebells, self-heal, wild basil, St. John's-wort, red bartsia, eyebright, centaury, viper's-bugloss, bramble flower and blackberries, my first ever buckthorn berries, the characteristic wayfaring tree berries of this site, hawthorn berries and cuckoo-pint berries with Green Woodpecker heard and Goldfinch and Woodpigeon enjoyed at home.

Pick your characters and give them a book filled with every thought anyone ever had about them. What would they read first? The positive or the negative ones? The thoughts of people they actually know or a stranger’s thought?

Rae: Refuses to even open the book. For one thing, she wouldn't want people to read the thoughts she's had about them, that feels vaguely like an invasion of her mind, so she'd want to extend the same courtesy. And for another, she doesn't want her mind to get stuck on what other people think.

Robin: Comes up with a few set rules for herself before opening the book. She will not look at thoughts from friends or family, only strangers - she doesn't want it to affect any of her close relationships, no matter how curious she may be.

Madison: Goes on a seek-and-destroy mission for her parents' thoughts. She can't help the curiosity, she needs to know what they think of her after what happened with Johnny, and if they'll ever forgive her.

Ophelia: The book is mostly entertainment for her - she'll flip through the thoughts of strangers who have seen her as Argonaut, most of them are like reading crappy Yelp reviews and she finds it funny. Sometimes, if she has a really bad day, she'll flip through her mother's of Harry's thoughts for a while to ward off the grief.

Jasper: Doesn't bother looking at the book. They can sense others' emotions, so they already have a general sense of what people think of them, and they really don't need the specifics. They only ever (ever) look at one small section of the book - Kyle's thoughts when he was first brought back, when he was still struggling to communicate. They knew there was a lot he wanted to say to them... so why not see what it was that he wanted to say?

Quinn: Reads through the whole book, she doesn't care what people think of her. Some of Lex's old thoughts hurt (she didn't know how jealous and vengeful Lex really was, or how long she'd been planning for what happened in Kyiv), but they're made up by learning how early Billy's feelings for her started - about the same time she started developing feelings for him, actually. And she gets a kick out of the strangers' thoughts, though she later ends up going in with a permanent marker and redacting the worst of the transphobic ones.

Kestrel: Originally considers reading the book, hoping it would help them convince their mind that they made an impact on the world and people around them (something they struggle with). But then they realize that could very quickly lead to a rabbithole of obsession on other people's thoughts, so it's safest not to touch it. They even go so far as to bury it in the backyard - they really, really don't want that temptation.

Katherine: Ahk's section is, quite literally, half the book. He spends a lot of time thinking about her, especially when he's sitting through the daylight hours each day. Katherine reads the first page... then pauses and sets herself a stopping point. It's not fair to him that she read everything, that's a bit invasive, so she only reads up to the moment she learned the secret of the museum. That felt... maybe not fully fair, but at least a somewhat-justified stopping point - she said all her thoughts to him when she visited, not knowing he was listening, so it's not awfully unfair to read that section of his thoughts in return. She also flips through the thoughts of her old bullies, too curious for her own good, and found that a lot of their taunting just came from a mountain of insecurity.

Eris: Their book is massive from how long they've been alive, but most people in it only get a line or two since Eris rarely makes longer connections. He can't help but look through Rick's section, though. It's the only one that takes up any significant amount of pages itself, and Eris is stunned to learn how deeply he really cares about them.

Nikoletta: Flips through the thoughts of everyone at Belle Reve, and uses it as a guide to managing her status and knowing who's really loyal to her. Most of the thoughts are neutral at best, while some people are outright imagining what they'd do to her if they had the chance... those thoughts do frighten her, a bit. By the time she gets to Abner's section, she's surprised at how soft it is compared to the rest. He's about the only person who hasn't plotted her demise, even offhandedly - hell, even Adrian (her right-hand man) has wondered briefly about whether he could be the King of Belle Reve if he took care of the Queen. Thankfully that thought didn't stick.

The last day of the Faire, the sky was overcast, with rumbles of thunder in the far distance. As Mayor Nat stepped up to the podium set up in front of town hall, a small crowd gathered to hear the announcement. She proceeded to declare Pandora Flowers as the winner of the costume contest, and withdrew the sword to present to the winner of the tournament, Morgan Vovk.

Before she could, though, Quinn Buckley from the commune ran up on stage and grabbed the microphone from the podium.

“Listen! You have to listen. This, all of this, is because of a being far greater than us! It sent the creatures from the woods to test us! To separate the weak from the strong. It judges us because it wants us to be ready before it reveals itself. We have to listen! We have to—“

Sheriff Henry attempted to take the microphone from her, but she struggled against him, still shouting into the microphone.

“It’s real! I felt its presence! Those that listen will be saved!”

Thunder rumbled, closer than before, much closer. A loud crack of lightning illuminated the sky, blindingly bright. Beyond the clouds, briefly visible in that split second, loomed a shape, unrecognizable and massive, both bulbous and gangly. As quickly as it appeared it was gone, and what remained was the sizzling body of Tristan Wilde, struck by the lightning. The sky opened up, then, as thunder boomed directly above, and rain and hail pelted the town.

“It’s there! You all saw it! It’s real! We have to submit!” Quinn wailed, as Henry attempted to pull her off the stage. “I can prove it! I can walk amongst them untouched! I’ve been chosen! You can be chosen too!”

Her cries fell away in the deafening downpour, and those that had gathered scattered to find shelter in the nearest buildings. Whether or not they saw something or, if they did, if they believe what they saw, remains to be seen.

The storm raged on through the night, as the creatures wandered the streets unperturbed by the rain and hail. The lights of the town flickered and then, as lightning staggered across the sky, everything went dark.

(Those that ran to find shelter found themselves stuck for the night. Below you’ll find the (randomly selected) groups. You can choose for your characters to have seen the shape in the sky, to have not seen it, or to have seen it and not believe it.

Everyone can continue/finish their event threads, as all this took place on the final day of the Faire (the 29th). You may also time-jump threads, headcanon threads, or make new threads for the plot drop. The event officially ends on August 5th, at which time please do not make any more event starters, however you can continue all threads until completion.)

Angie Minkin is a San Francisco-based poet who stands on her head for inspiration. Angie volunteers as a poetry editor of Vistas & Byways Literary Review. Her work has been published in that journal, as well as The MacGuffin, Rattle, The Poeming Pigeon, The Unbroken Journal, Persimmon Tree, Rise Up Review, and several others. Angie is a coauthor of Dreams and Blessings: Six Visionary Poets, published in 2020 by Blue Light Press. Her work has been included in Fog and Light, San Francisco through the Eyes of the Poets Who Live Here and Pandemic Puzzle Poems, also published by Blue Light Press. Angie Minkin celebrates sparrows, hawks, “an unseen thrush,” blue herons, finches, a kestrel that “lands in the hawthorn tree,” pelicans, snowy plovers. Among these marvelous birds, we also hear children dancing and “hollering wishes to heaven,” as well as old women “humming private melodies” and retracing steps “in this origami life.” Angie Minkin’s poems brim with wonder, vitality, and reverence. There were some farm visitors with a couple of young kids out today. Holding a 6 wk old baby bunny for an 8 yr old girl to pet is the highlight of my week ❤️

I led the big horned lady goats away when Pip's mom took the little tour group in, since they're. Large and horned and have no manners. Lol but Hawthorne didn't come with the group, who I was leading by pretending I had a bucket of food. Hawthorne instead demanded attention from the visitors. She's such a sweet bossy little goat

The older kid, when asked, said Kai and Kestrel were her favorite part of the farm tour! Amazing that they beat baby rabbits

They're so good with kids. Didn't get too excited or jumped, just stood for petting

Kai DID get the zoomies since he really loves children, but he never goes near them when he gets like that. He just wanted me to throw toys for him while he ran around play bowing

EDIT: one of the adults was amazed by the huskies' coats too. So soft and shiny and clean. I love when people compliment that bc I have absolutely nothing to do with it 😂 no grooming and they're mud and manure monsters. Their coats are just. like that

Eleven of my favourite photos I took in November 2023 and month summary

The photos are of; mushroom at Lakeside Country Park, sunset at Milkham in the New Forest, Mute Swans at Weston Shore, autumn leaves at Lakeside, shaggy scalycaps at Lakeside, more autumn leaves at Lakeside, Mallard at Lakeside, teasel at Lakeside, Fallow Deers at Bolderwood in the New Forest, ivy in Winchester and Herring Gull at Lakeside.

November was a month of splendour for me, from the spectacle of watching a Short-eared Owl quartering at Farlington Marshes to the vibrant autumnal colour that blanketed the landscape. It was another very strong month of observing mushrooms for me from amethyst deceiver in a very strong year I've had for them to shaggy scalycap and many more enjoyed. Flowers such as gorse, wild carrot, white deadnettle and daisy hung on to bring some nice colour to my walks still with hawthorn berries, rose hips and memorably lots of holly ever present. The nights drawing right in has brought some special sky scenes to enjoy with it being a great month of moons and rainbows for me too. There was still a sprinkling of insect sightings with the likes of Red Admiral butterflies and Common Darter dragonfly in sunnier parts of the month, with it being another great month of spiders especially the Long-bodied Cellar spider seen well many times at home where it's been notable to see Grey Silverfish too.

The return of Redwings and Fieldfares easing us into winter has been notable in my month's birdwatching, with Brent Geese too. It was a special day at Farlington Marshes at the heart of the month also getting amazing views of Bearded Tits and Marsh Harrier. On my Lakeside walks I have gone nicely into the exciting birding days of winter with different birds being about, most notably the two redhead Goosanders which it has been an honour to see a few times so close to home. Cormorant, Kingfisher, Mistle Thrush, Grey and Pied Wagtail, Siskins and returning Tufted Ducks have been other Lakeside highlights this month. Long-tailed Tit and Kestrel were other standout species this month. For mammals across the month at Lakeside and in the New Forest I was treated to gripping views of charming Roe and Fallow Deers seeing a young Roe at Lakeside and rutting action in the forest with the Fallows. I saw a fair few Grey Squirrels and enjoyed New Forest pannage pigs again too.

Climate change. It was ungodly hot here tho, so I don’t think it’ll be much of a change when I move to Eugene. Just more humidity.

Even the start of the second rainy season has changed noticeably since then. Back in the 70′s through the 90′s the first big rain of Fall almost always happened within the three day window centered on my birthday. Now I think it typically starts some time in the next week after it.

       Since you guys know I have a penchant for rambling when I’m really into something, have a some tidbits from Winifred’s Harry Potter verse.

Despite being English, she has lived in the United States since she was seven years old and she has full citizenship in America. When the time came for her to receive her ‘welcome to Hogwarts’ letter the year before she was due to start, she found herself pleasantly surprised to find that it wasn’t from Hogwarts where both of her parents had attended, but Ilvermorny. She was pleased as punch to have received any letter at all.

When the time came for her to be sorted, and Winifred stepped onto that Gordian Knot in between the four statues, it was two houses’ mascots that reacted. The Thunderbird, who favours the soul and adventure, and the Pukwudgie, who favours healers. As was tradition for those who saw more than one of the wooden mascots react, Winifred was then given a choice between which she might prefer. Being eleven years old and very, very keen on having wonderful adventures, Winifred chose the Thunderbird house to be her own.

She has a natural love and aptitude for Quidditch. That had started with her father taking her to matches once she was old enough to go without worrying that she might be hurt or lost, and turned into a passion of hers. Like her father before her, and his father before him, Winifred is passionate about the sport and when she is in her third year, she replaces the beater on her own house team after they had graduate.

Winifred’s brooms are never out of date. The moment Nigel Rose discovers that a newer, better model is about to be released, Winifred always finds that her post-owl comes to the table with a new broom. She offers her older ones to student who might not have one of their own, and usually muggle-born first years.

Her pet of choice outside of the typical post-owl is a beautiful common Kestrel named August. He was gifted to her by her mother after she expressed and interest in birds of prey.

Her wand is hawthorn wood with a phoenix feather core, 12 ¾" and suprisingly swishy flexibility.

In third year, she had a girlfriend by the name of April Miller. The two, after their little romance fizzled out, remained great friends well into adulthood.

She meets a friend by the name Andromeda Black ( @copiesofme​ )  through a cross-school pen-pal system put in place when she was in her second year. While the practise quickly faded amongst the other students after the initial excitement wore off, she and Andromeda continued to do so.

When she graduated from school, she was given the option to go into Quidditch professionally with the Sweetwater All-Stars quidditch team. As exciting as that was for her and something she would have loved to pursue, she decided to follow in the path of her father and become an auror, as it had been of interest when she had started school, and all of the studious preparation had already been taken to ensure that she passed her examinations.

When she leaves school, Winifred is gifted a Puffskein which she names Rupert. He is an adorable little lap pet and, with as with most Puffskein owners has woken up a time or two with its tongue up her nose. She also owns a Kneazle by the name of Purdy, also a gift from her father who told her they were very good at sniffing out suspicious people.

Winifred is killed in action on the path of a dark wizard in her late twenties, not knowing that it was a well laid out trap to catch any aurors cocky enough to bite. She isn’t found until weeks later after being killed in action.
