The First Blade: Balaraw - Winged Dagger
I realize I haven't been explicit about it on here yet (mostly because I'm not the best at keeping all my social media profiles up to date), but I am involved in the development of a Tabletop Roleplaying Game It's called Gubat Banwa- a TTRPG based around tactical grid combat, contemplative war drama, and high-flying martial arts, all of which taking place in an unapologetically Southeast Asian-inspired fantasy setting, developed by @makapatag with art direction by @villain-returns. Initially I developed the script that is used in the gamebook and diegetically in the setting- called Kasuratan- but I'll talk about that elsewhere.
Tumblr media
With the Kickstarter launch imminent, I thought I'd do a bunch of Twitter X threads on a bunch of weapons I've drawn for the game counting down the final week before the launch. Then I thought: "Why aren't I posting these on tumblr also, at least I wouldn't lose my mind over character counts over here"- so here we are. These were supposed to be posted as Swordtember drawings, but then the KS launch got moved to October. Most of these blades are of Philippine make, since that is where my knowledge-base is and what I'm comfortable enough to share knowledge about. I thought it'd be nice to share a bit of blade knowledge from some of the cultures that inspired the setting. Without further ado, let us begin with the BALARAW.
Tumblr media
Also known as a "winged dagger", it is characterized by its unique shape, consisting of a short leaf-shaped blade driven with the tang out into a hilt with two distinct protrusions, creating three prongs on the back with the tang included.
Tumblr media
(Photos from an exhibit at The Met)
They may be held at the hilt like a regular knife, or they may be held in a manner not too dissimilar from how our neighbors in Southeast Asia hold keris. One may imagine it like a "push dagger" for lack of other reference points. It might be likened to the katar as well, in some sense.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Sketches by the Gubat Banwa Art Director himself) Nowadays, the blade is frequently attributed to the People of the Upstream- the Mandaya group of peoples- though they would have seen much wider use in their day, likely also spanning across what is now the Visayas region of the Philippines.
Tumblr media
(Modern rendition by Panday Keiven Tolentino of Itak Mindoro, Photo by Ramon H. Bathan) Something I've noticed from looking at Philippine blades all the time is that symmetrical, double-edged blades like these are rare, here. Blades that lend themselves more to stabbing than anything else aren't very prevalent either, and blades that do not- at first glance- appear to be made with tool use/foliage clearing/farmwork in mind don't make up the majority of specimens. The balaraw is unique in several different respects, and any self-respecting warrior Kadungganan of Gubat Banwa's Sword Isles would do well to mind its bite. The weapon makes an appearance in Gubat Banwa in the hands of the Beast Hunter- one of the many Disciplines ("character classes") whose techniques your character can learn in-game.
The Gubat Banwa Kickstarter launches in 7 days! Check it out here:
We'd appreciate any and all help in getting the word out. Support an independent TTRPG made by a team from the global south, looking to make waves through a fantasy setting where the Southeast Asian inspirations takes center stage!

So BG3 is currently holding a chokehold on me and I can't help but think of hetasean dnd au. I'll try to limit this to PHB and 5e for simplicity reasons. also sorry I'm not a seasoned DND player at all i played one casual campaign but only actually understood the mechanics after playing bg3 LOL im a highly kinetic-visual person
Vietnam: Any tanky build will do as such I was thinking an atheist paladin would be funny lol. She is definitely the one with the most hands-on experience in battle. Proficient with polearms and shields. I see her more leaning towards martial classes, so like barbarian or fighter. probably fighter. Looks Lawful but actually Chaotic. Hmm... maybe Neutral Good?
Thailand: Monk for the muay thai coolness. Not sure about his subclass tho... most of them don't sound lethal and brutal enough. Definitely Lawful Evil.
Malaysia: At first I was thinking of a gunslinger build (just so I can give him a loooooong boy ala Malacca era) but the fighter subclass, because he doesn't come off as the artificer type to me. Either that or barbarian for the tiger rage. Now him being a druid would allow him to actually turn into a tiger, but honestly Mal as a character doesn't seem so druid-y to me--Oh wait. he skips meetings to catch sea creatures and talks about social harmony... maybe he could be a druid. Chaotic Good.
Singapore: Any class that relies on high INT, like wizard . Ok I said I'd limit to PHB but war magic is so him. The other schools just doesn't scream poisoned shrimp enough for me. Lawful Neutral.
Indonesia: At first I was thinking of cleric to match his worldflags counterpart but Indo as a warlock is a delicious thought. Besides, Pact of Talisman mechanic sounds like typical indo black magic shenanigans. Of course the talisman must be a haunted ornate keris. Then later another idea came: what if he's a multiclass bard-monk?? The mechanics match up with pesilat Betawi as it's tradition to roast your opp with pantun (type of Malay poem) before commencing the beating. So like, Vicious Mockery -> Flurry of Blows . but if Thai is already a monk, Indo will have to relinquish that role for diversity reasons. I'm on the fence between True Neutral and Chaotic Neutral.
Philippines: Him being a bard is a no-brainer because filipinos and singing!!11!!! also after playing a bard, there seem to be more of roasting a dude than singing But hear me out: deadly dex-based fighter. Or since he already has Pien, why not a beast master ranger? If we really need to play that Catholic Trauma™ then Piri could be a cleric. never paladin tho. Two-weapon proficiency, twin blades because he's a gemini. Same alignment as Indo awww twinning!!! but leaning more on chaotic
this is still a brainstorming post maaaaybe I'll draw their designs some day...... what do y'all think???? I'd like to hear some suggestions 🙌

I started playing D&D with a friend a little over a year ago, and one of the things that we wanted to do with the campaign was to be able to see both our cultures and other cultures represented in the fantasy world that we would be playing in, because, frankly, a lot of the fantasy media we grew up with was pretty dang white. I’ve ended up pulling parts of Vietnamese culture, because I’m Vietnamese, he’s pulled from his culture, and that’s been really fun to see.
Anyway, my character, Keri, is a dwarf, and is a character I had previously played in a campaign with mostly white friends, where we weren’t thinking about including our cultures in this way. And as I was doing some prep and thinking about aspects of dwarven culture for this current campaign, I decided that instead of basing the dwarven writing system on runes, which is what Tolkien's and D&D's dwarven writing system is based on, dwarves in this setting would have a writing system inspired by cuneiform, which is a writing system from ancient Mesopotamia.
Tumblr media
[image description: A chart which shows 30 Anglo-Saxon "futhorc" runes. It shows their names, transliteration characters, and the meanings of their names.]
Tumblr media
[image description: a Sumero-Akkadian cuneiform syllabary, used by early Akkadian rulers. It is a grid that has English letters on the top and left axis and shows the corresponding cuneiform characters]
I liked the visual similarities—both runes and cuneiform have very geometric, angular characters; both are written on materials that have been preserved really well—but then I wanted to make a reference sheet for myself, so I didn't have to keep on going to D&D Beyond to look up information. So I went on Canva and looked for a sufficiently angular and blocky font until I found a font called Obra Letra and made my reference sheet.
Tumblr media
[image description: The first page of my reference sheet. It has brown angular text on a parchment background. The text has information from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything about the Artficer D&D class]
And then I got annoyed with Canva, switched to the Affinity suite of design programs, and Googled Obra Letra to see if I would be able to buy the font. And then I found out that it was inspired by vintage Filipino typography! Which is super cool!
Tumblr media
[image description: Text over an image of a bay in the Philippines. The text reads "Obra Letra Display Typeface by Lorenzo Martinez; a modern take on filipino vintage typography"]
And I currently have this document of of spells that my character can pick from, but I've been debating whether or not I use Obra Letra as the only font for all of it, or if I should find a different one for the body text and just use Obra Letra as like the font for like the spell names and stuff.
Tumblr media
[image description: The first page of my spell description document. There is brown angular text over a parchment background. The text includes the spell information for the spells "Prestidigitation" and "Mage Hand"]
So I Googled Filipino inspired fonts, just going off of the description of Obra Letra, and found an article from Canva of Filipino inspired fonts! And then I was like, “Well, these are all like, display fonts and not quite what I'm looking for…What if I google Vietnamese inspired fonts!” And I found a website called vietnamesetypography.com that lists recommendations for fonts that can accommodate all of the tonal markings that Vietnamese has as well as resources for designing fonts with those markings in mind and a brief history of writing in Vietnam! Which is so cool!!
There’s probably a deeper conversation about Asian diaspora and being a second gen immigrant engaging with my family’s culture to be had here, but I’m just so dang excited that:
1. There’s no “right”way to worldbuild. Tolkien was a language nerd, so he built Middle Earth and all the cultures within to house the conlangs he was making. If you happen to be stuck with worldbuilding, start from the place that makes you excited to go down Wikipedia rabbit holes. I love calligraphy and typography, so that’s where I started.
2. That what you, or I create, or anyone creates will always have a part of them in it. And that when you’re able to bring all of yourself—your culture, your experience, your interests—what you create becomes even richer

I recommend immersing! if you're not in a place that you can regularly hear and speak in Tagalog then watching TV, listening to music, and reading can be the next best thing <3
As far as I can remember, Duolingo also has an English to Filipino course you can try out, though you can go about half into the course before it stops being conversational :))))
Also the Philippines thread under Gen 1 in The Bunker is open we sometimes talk Tagalog in there lol

TWICE 5th World Tour: Day 2 in Melbourne
Finally, napanood ko na ang TWICE live!!!! I didn't have the chance to watch them in the Philippines way back 2019 because naubusan kami ng ticket.
Meron gift na tote bag and scarf, may VIP landyard din for souvenir!
Sad lang today dahil back to reality.

Me anticipating stuffs;
If i'll rank them from the most difficult to least RFBT or Law and Advance Acctg would prolly be on top. 👀 FAR will consume huge amount of time so oras yung magiging kalaban. TAX will be manageable if you mastered Banggawan's book, Philippine tax law and the tax rates. If sa Auditing maraming theories, keri basta wag lang comprehensive problems. For MAC, yun yung favorite ko na sub hahaha kasi mataas nakukuha kong scores dun.

The kris or keris is an indigenous asymmetric dagger is the most famous Moro (Mindanao Philippines) weapon. The variations are found in every Moro tribe and was a key symbol of the status and position of a man in the Moorish society as well as being a powerful talisman. The blades of Kris are broad at the base, double-edged, and can be moved, half-straight in half straight or straight (the straight blades were more practical in combat). The older kris had less waves and the waves were deeper and wider. Over time the waves have become less deep, narrower and more numerous and have therefore required greater skill to prevent the blade from bouncing or being stuck in an enemy's body. The greater number of waves meant that the kris was more powerful in talismanic power. Sometimes the incisions (often filled with brass or silver inlays) are on the blade in vegetable motifs (vines, leaves, etc.) or in Arabic characters. Many kris blades are forged with fullers. The kris del Moro are cutting and cutting the swords against the stabbing Kererists of the Malaysians and Indonesians. Kris ranges from 45 to 65 centimeters (from 18 to 26 inches) in length. The oldest kris before the nineteenth century tended to be smaller. Laminated steel models are sometimes evident. In front of the hook as a fretwork on the blade guard there is an elephant-shaped cavity, an eagle or the mouth of a naga (a mythical snake).
The krises blows are straight or slightly curved. Commonly the pommel is in the shape of a horse's hoof, or a stylized cockatoo head with beak and crest. Usually the knob is made of hardwood briar with the handle wrapped in lacquered fiber. The upper class kris knobs are often made of ivory, silver, brass or other exotic materials with handles wrapped in chiselled silver or swassa bands (copper-gold alloy) or braided wire. Big extravagant cockatoo knobs appeared towards the end of the 19th century and are called junggayan. The knobs before the nineteenth century were very small.
The shears in Moro kris were made of hard durum wheat such as mahogany, teak and narra, tied together with strips of rattan or metal. Sometimes the cross is separated from the bottom, but more often they are carved together. Around the middle of the 20th century, the mother of pearl was introduced into the work of the sheath and kris knobs. The sheaths of the nobility are bound with bands of pure or chiselled silver, brass or swassa instead of rattan ligatures. Some nobility sheaths even have ivory or horn sleepers. Moro Kris has evolved from use in combat. The double-edged blade is an advantage where there are numerous opponents, the blade can be used to cut in an upward stroke. A contrasting single edge blade should be rotated in the opposite direction to make the same cut.
Moro kris is much appreciated by the inhabitants of Mindanao and Sulu. It is used as a symbol of authority and prestige. The Moro Kris keris. The weapon Sandokan the Tiger of the Philippines is Malaysia                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           Ang kris o keris ay isang katutubong asymmetric dagger ay ang pinaka sikat na Moro weapon (MIndanao Filipino). O in caratteri arabi.

on ode to the bean.
its been two days since your passing. over the course of 48 hours there has been fourteen games played in the league, two of which were rockets games. i watched both games and it just didnt feel the same. seeing all these teams giving their tribute to you has made my eyes water each time. every time i open my phone, every time i turn on espn, there is your name. i hated you growing up. you killed my team each time you played them. but as i grew up, seeing how you handled your career through adversity, mistakes, countless allegations. it made me respect you as a person more than the basketball legend you are. the strides you took even after you gracefully stepped away from the game had myself and almost everyone envisioning the philanthropist you were on your way in being. you once said “if you’re not in it to win, why are you in it.” who would’ve thought a person i hated would be the inspiration i needed to stop being complacent. when i was younger, i would always say that i am just a guy that’s trying to be remembered when i am gone. somewhere a long the road i became okay with just rolling over in my grave and just becoming another name on a stone. you ignited the fire in me again. i want to have the impact you have. i want to have a legacy that has more to be remembered for than just my mistakes. the biggest thing that has been the bane of my existence is the fact that when i make a mistake, i kill myself over and over again. you airballed 5 threes in that game against utah and you didn’t even skip a beat. you played through 141 injuries through your career. you missed 42 game winners. i hope to one day emulate that from you, you make a mistake, you fuck up, you say it happened and move on to the next game. move on to the next day.
i made this post mostly to get all these thoughts and emotions out so that i can scroll on instagram or twitter and not have to hold back tears. this is probably the most i’ve been affected by the death of a person that literally has no relation to me other than being on the other side of a tv screen. this isn’t something that will be gone next week. you can see the impact this man had by seeing how much his death brought people together. there is still hate in the world and for once its not making the headlines. its not the first thing we see in the morning. you wake up to positivity from negativity for once. you wake up to people coming together from LA to Philadelphia to Italy to the Philippines to China. your reach knew no bounds, your influence knew no bounds.
whenever i found out your daughter Gianna passed alongside with you. man i didn’t think my heart could sink even lower. seeing her highlights, seeing how you were with her. its something that i imagine for myself, my kid embracing the love for the game i had. and it appeared she inherited your unmatched love for the game ten fold. seeing her highlights i immediately thought about the video a fan made where it was comparing you and jordan, how they faded jordan into you doing the same fadeaway he had. i could already see them adding Gianna at the end doing your same move. it hurt me seeing someone with that much passion in something get taken away from it when they were just getting started.
you were my generation’s michael jordan. i will never forget you or your legacy. hell i still don’t even believe you’re gone. i thought i was gonna hear you deliver one of the greatest hall of fame speeches of all time. i thought i was gonna see you coach a team. i thought i was gonna see you sitting courtside at every all star weekend, at finals games just like bill russell. i thought you were gonna live forever. now, you will. through the hearts and minds of basketball fans. through kobe fans.
rest in peace kobe bryant. rest in peace gianna bryant. rest in peace john altobelli. rest in peace keri altobelli. rest in peace alyssa altobeli. rest in peace christina mauser. rest in peace sarag chester. rest in peace payton chester. rest in peace ara zobayam.
