Vernon mother looks for more safeguards around transitioning after son commits suicide

Kaleb began transitioning in Grade 6 with the help of a Kelowna clinic

A Vernon mom robbed of her joy in life after her son committed suicide is speaking out against transgender policies in hopes of saving others.

Kaleb, formerly Joy, Fisher would have been 18 next month.

He was a straight-A student, an over-achiever, never did drugs or drank alcohol, had a job since he was 14 and was accepted into the RCMP Police Academy for the upcoming session.

But on April 23, Kaleb killed himself.

“I found him. I woke up in the morning and he wasn’t in his room. He had suffocated himself,” said Gail, a single mother who worked two jobs to provide for her son and herself.

He left a long letter for his mom and his girlfriend.

“He was afraid for the future. He said in his note he didn’t want to end up like me, working myself to death.”

Kaleb was transitioning from female to male, a decision Gail supported as she knew since the day he was born that he was destined to be a boy.

Gail thinks Kaleb’s decision was primarily sparked after a Grade 4 incident at school where he (she at the time) was molested.

He never wanted to be a girl after that and in Grades 6 and 7 started the transition.

“I supported him through it.”

Kaleb did his research and found a clinic in Kelowna that would help him be the man he wanted to be.

The problem was, Gail was never consulted by the clinic.

“At 13 he was able to do all of it without my permission.”

At 13 he couldn’t buy alcohol or cigarettes or cannabis, he couldn’t get a tattoo without his mom’s permission, but he was given drugs and injections and was even scheduled for a top reduction this year.

“He saw the doctor like once a year. It’s quite careless. They never even showed him how to take those injections.”

Kaleb was smart though, and he did everything right, even marking his calendar with injection dates.

In March, Gail said the calendar shows he stopped the injections.

That’s when she suspects things started to grow dark for her bright, bubbly child.

He never outwardly appeared sad or distraught in any way, but she learned how he was really feeling the morning she read his note.

“He was so angry, so sad, so hateful.”

He was on medications for years, and she knows there were stretches when he wouldn’t take them.

She doesn’t understand why a doctor or clinic would push these parentless procedures, with no real follow-up or support.

“There needs to be changes to safeguard these kids.”

She would like to see such youth, and parents, provided counselling before injections, so they are appraised of the dangers.

“Do we know the long-term effects of giving these medications?”

Kaleb isn’t the only one.

“I have friends in Kelowna that lost their daughter a year ago and she was on the same injections.”

And now she knows the harsh statistics of transitioning youth.

“Preliminary findings is one in five of these kids are taking their lives.”

Gail and Kaleb lived in Coldstream until COVID-19 hit.

“I lost my home, I lost everything,” said the entertainment director at the Longhorn Pub in Vernon who many know for her superstar karaoke.

She started a painting business, and Kaleb was her best employee.

“We were a formidable team.”

Kaleb attended Kalamalka Secondary briefly before going online with VLearn. He also attended Kidston Elementary, where he was given the Friendship Award.

Gail knows many students who knew Kaleb are struggling with the news and she has planned a Celebration of Life at Coldstream Creek Park for May 17 at 4:30 p.m. so they can come after school. She is trying to get approvals to plant a maple tree, as Kaleb wanted, in the park.

Respectful, kind and helpful are a few of the words loved ones use to describe him.

He was also incredibly creative – he had been writing novels since he was nine and was making costumes for the upcoming Comic Con.

“He was a beautiful soul with such a bright future,” said family friend Ricky Rochon, who thought of Kaleb like a son and created a GoFundMe for Gail.

“As a parent, I can’t fathom this kind of pain. It breaks my heart.”

More than $12,000 has been raised to date, a portion of which Gail plans to use for a bursary in Kaleb’s memory, and the rest to help her through this difficult time.

Some easy steps to fill your eyebrows

Fun, arched and full eyebrows are always in style, but for most of us they seem impossible. Many of our customers ask us the tips to make the eyebrows look profound. We do suggest them to go for our permanent eyebrows in kelowna, but there are some other simple tips that can be followed to get the desired look from your existing eyebrows.

Start by doing the following:

* Use a fine line eyebrow pencil with a fine tip to create a line on the top of your eyebrow. Start with locating the starting point of your eyebrow. The best way to do it is by holding the pencil vertical to create a bridge with your nose, exactly next to your nostril. Mark the point with a pencil and later mark the ending point by pivoting the pencil to align the same with the outer corner of your eye. Connect the two dots with a light and even line.

* Time to fill, start at the tail of the eyebrow, and use feather like strokes to fill in your eyebrow. Ensure to begin at the underside of your eyebrow and move outward towards the temple for the most natural look.

* Last step is to blend, you can use a spoolie brush at a 45-degree angle and blend your pencil strokes with the natural hair.

My tattoo is freaking amazing, its soo beautiful.  Took 2.5 hours, $380 and it was the best tattoo experience I’ve ever had. 

I’m not ovulating yet, I’m stressing about how the weekend will go.  I will be at the mountain house and will have to drive to Kelowna Saturday and Sunday mornings either for blood or IUI #3.  Im thinking my bosses want to go over night camping to this little cabin one night but we dirtbike to it and I won’t be able to if I’ve got to drive in the morning. grr.

January 2017:  Having cake and eating it too!

So, I’m officially one day out from my last dose of chemo. I was given the green light yesterday from my oncologist, despite my having a bit of a persistent, dry cough. (I think I may have picked that up at a Kelowna Rockets hockey game. Don’t tell my team of doctors I was out in public [shifty eyes]….) My oncologist figures the cough shouldn’t be a problem considering how good my neutrophil numbers have been. Ahhhhh, what a relief! I couldn’t be more excited to be getting poisoned…one last time that is. I’m just waiting now on my radiation dates (which should be a few weeks out from the last dose of chemotherapy). I still have to do some calibration imaging prior to starting my radiation treatment to help with focusing the beams of radiation, and I gather this will involve some tattooing as well. Ooo la la! I don’t imagine I’ll have much of a say as to what the markings will look like, but I can still dream. I’d be happy if it looks really cryptic or religious or alien or something – any crosshairs or sequential dots could fit this bill well – though I suppose most people won’t get to see the tattoos unless I follow through with that eye-patch-like bathing suit idea I had. Or I become a nudist. Or I start flashing people more regularly. Well, rest assured, whatever happens, I shan’t let them be wasted on me alone. Perhaps I can incorporate the markings into a larger chest tattoo. (I’ve already been contemplating a west coast tree scene. What of a few extra symbols in the sky?) In any case, I’m still not sure exactly where this imaging will take place. My radiation oncologist was considering doing the calibration scanning in Kelowna, but it’s possible it will be done in Vancouver instead. I have put a call in to her office and will let you know when I get the details. The only thing I know for sure is that the actual radiation treatments will be in Vancouver. And once I’m down in the Lower Mainland, I can hopefully work in my visa medical too. (I see the light! I see the path to Seattle again!) Once radiation treatment is complete, I will have one last visit with my oncologist in Kelowna to arrange my hormone suppression treatment. It sounds like I will have to take some form of estrogen-blocking medication for at least five years, perhaps even ten years duration, following my other treatments to help prevent recurrence. A small price to pay. I do wonder what this will mean in terms of side effects. Will I be menopausal for good, for example. I know there was talk of my periods returning in the best case scenario, but does this make sense if I’m taking estrogen suppressors? Things to ask my oncologist....

*I should also note that I turned thirty on the third but was sick with that cough I mentioned. I had to settle for a quiet, indoor celebration – doctor’s orders – but not for lack of planning. My sister-in-law-to-be helped me come up with a grand bingo extravaganza plan – complete with some lovely decorations and party favours – but alas we had to take a rain check on bingo. Still, we made the most of what we had control over – the cake. Now, we had our doubts about our baking skills. And, admittedly, our cake on its own didn’t taste all that great. But, in the end, we delivered! We made a delicious carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, complete with sprinkles on top of the cake AND inside the middle icing layer. (That was Jill’s added touch.) We didn’t even need the backup cake we bought – which turned out to be the gross cake after all! Life lessons!

The 500px “I am: woman” Commercial Collection was inspired by and shot for “Project ShowUs”, an initiative put together by Dove, Girl Gaze, and Getty Images. The Project was first launched in 2019 and won a Cannes Lion, Silver Lion, Glass: The Lion for Change award, for their groundbreaking work devoted to shattering beauty stereotypes.

Representation of women in advertising hasn’t changed in over a decade. As visual thought leaders, advertisers, marketers, and creatives, we need to be more progressive when it comes to the portrayal of women in advertising:

By shifting this narrative, women reclaim ownership over how they are seen and valued within global culture. It provides space for young girls to recognize value within themselves and for women to understand that there is no ‘cookie-cutter’, ‘one-size-fits-all’, recipe to define what a woman is.

For this collection, 500px worked with nine international photographers who photographed over 80 authentic women who are breaking stereotypes and adding personal context to explain how they identify, who they are, and things they are proud of. The photographers worked intimately with each woman to help keyword her content, providing real keywords that accurately represent who they are as individual people in 2020.

In this Collection you will find leaders, achievers, women in power, business owners, survivors, mothers, grandmothers, daughters, and people who contribute to a community of women who empower one another to stay strong. They contribute to a louder voice within advertising, insisting media and advertisers reflect the authentic experience of women around the world.

A wine tour of Canada’s beautiful Okanagan Valley

Ven to a person aware of going spherical wineries, Mission Hill is just jaw-losing. The 40 in particular commissioned sculptures, the 12-storey bell tower, the collection of ancient Greek amphorae, the Chagall tapestry … that is as grand as a wine enjoy gets, yet it’s now not within the Napa Valley, however, one thousand miles to the north in Canada’s Okanagan Valley.

Wine is booming inside the Okanagan. Two decades in the past, there had been only 31 wineries in the area; now there are over a hundred thirty. With the talent that would effortlessly have made him a shining light in Vancouver, van Hooydonk chose to live inside the Okanagan, so he can spend greater time together with his own family and “cook dinner food I’m excited about that week”. It’s now not a cheap meal – minimum spend for the dining room is C$500 (£300) – but it may accommodate 10 human beings and you can take your very own wine. “And that I’m there inside the kitchen,” says van Hooydonk. “A number of humans say they like shaking palms with the individual making ready the food.”

There’s an individuality to the Okanagan that’s now not observed in Napa, or maybe Sonoma. Take the tiny Upper Bench Winery & Creamery in Penticton, wherein Uk-born Gavin Miller makes the wine and his spouse, Shana, an impressive selection of cheeses. I’m not sure I ever reached the “knowingness” of who I was, even though: there’s Plenty of hippy-dippy stuff inside the Okanagan.

At the opposite crease of the valley in Summerland, a cool Winery called the Okanagan Overwhelm Pad is filled with tulip- and egg-shaped concrete tanks designed to carry out the high-quality within the “no-additive, native ferment” wines made for its Haywire label and different small manufacturers. As Captain Beefheart pumps out over the sound gadget, a small white fluffy fireplace rug inside the shape of a Wonderful Pyrenees pup called Bijou wanders across the tasting room. They encourage you to have a seminar – now not just a tasting. Oh, and the winemaker has a beard and tattoos. Of route.

As you drive further south, it receives step by step hotter and drier. A massive part of this southern a part of the Okanagan, Canada’s only barren region, is owned by First State Canadians, who farm a few 32,000 acres around Osoyoos. They, too, have a Vineyard and motel called Nk’Mip (stated kameez), in conjunction with a soaking up the cultural center which strains the records of the Osoyoos people.

Underneath an invitingly blue sky, I set out at the Nk’Mip on the footpath but have the second mind when I see the yellow caution symptoms: “Be alert: watch for rattlesnakes.”

“You rarely see one,” my manual Darlene tells me later, most effective half of convincingly. not often is simply too regularly for me.
