show us a picture of your handwriting?
alas, this is not the handwriting that got me complimented as a child... my first cherished compliment 🥺 oh well
(it says "maybe time running out is a gift..." which is a quote from the song if we were vampires by chester see, currently on repeat. also yes, i did put a pretentious filter on this photo)
tell a story about your childhood
the first time i saw a mouse in real life, i hadn't learned that 'freeze' was also a response to being scared, so after realizing that i'd frozen in surprise, internally i went oh right, you're supposed to scream when you see mice, right? and forced myself to yell
what’s something you’ve always wanted to do but maybe been too scared to do?
get a tattoo, get a second piercing, learn to ride a motorcycle... basically, there's a Cool™️ version of myself in my head, and i would like to become her in some ways, and i'm trying to sort out which of those are like. something i want rather than a stereotype
#sorry this took so long to answer... the hold up was getting a pic of my writing bc i only seemed to remember when i didn't have paper handy#thank you#kelenloth#let's talk#ask#asked and answered#personal#abbie needs a twitter

Tumblr users will inevitably bust out the most fire prose the moment they talk about something they like.
I mean who the fuck just casually says that first paragraph. That's insane. I should read their posts more often. This is the sort of thing I fucking wish I could consistently write. Instead I can only write stuff like this once or twice a year when I get struck by inspiration like a lightning bolt that fills me with some unknown energy, as if bringing life to long-dead dreams now gloriously shining like a reflection of the sun within my mind once more; a distortion of those dreams I once held, incomplete and formless yet no less beautiful.
statue of King Arthur on the top of Tintagel cliffs
#kelenloth thank you very much you inspired me to write something nice again#i mean im kind of cringing at it now but it was extremely fun in the moment and frankly thats what its all about#god i fucking love writing#remember kids if you feel awkward about your art dont do delf depricating jokes or irony thats what hack screenwriters do to distance#themselves from their work so that when people criticize them they dont feel as hurt#if youre doing art do it genuinely and with pride and if it makes you cringe post it anyway so you can learn from the experience

13 books!
What’s up readers?! How about a little show and tell? Answer these 13 questions, tag 13 lucky readers and if you’re feeling extra bookish add a shelfie! Let’s Go!
(I was tagged by the kind @glueblade, thanks for sending the ask!)
1) The Last book I read:
The Lost Metal, by Brandon Sanderson
2) A book I recommend:
I really enjoyed The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller!
3) A book that I couldn’t put down:
It's a clichéed response, but Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir. Damn but I loved Gideon (the character) from the start and I wanted to know more about her.
Also Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett. My favourite of his so far!
4) A book I’ve read twice (or more):
Do mangas count? Because I've read the Fullmetal Alchemist series by Hiromu Arakawa quite a number of times lol
5) A book on my TBR:
The rest of the Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells. I only read the first novella so far, and I'm hooked!
6) A book I’ve put down:
I tried to read The Well of Time a couple of times, and I've never quite managed. I don't know why it just doesn't click with me.
7) A book on my wish list:
God, so many. I'd be curious to read anything by R. F. Kuang, like the Poppy Wars series and Babel.
8) A favorite book from childhood:
I was a big fan of the Bartimaeus series by Jonathan Shroud. Barty is still one of my favourite narrators ever.
9) A book you would give to a friend:
I have the tendency to lend my books to my friends, does it count? For one, I got two of them hooked on the Stormlight Archive series by Brandon Sanderson that way. I have a friend who would really like Uprooted by Naomi Novik too, but I haven't had the occasion to lend it to her yet!
11) A nonfiction book you own:
I like reading history books these days! So I have a few of Martin Wall's books about Anglo-Saxon history, and couple of books about the Viking age and the Roman era too.
12) What are you currently reading:
Artificial Condition, bu Martha Wells, and Irish History by Neil Hegarty.
13) What are you planning on reading next?
Feet of Clay by Terry Pratchett. And a lot, lot more lol...
I tag... @baepsae-7, @andordean, @mass-convergence, @kelenloth, @ramblesanddragons and anyone who would want to try! But no pressure if you don't have the time!

I know this is the exact opposite of some you’ve been getting but every time I go to the gym I get SO discouraged. My therapist was hoping it would help me feel better but it just makes me feel worse because it shows how little I can do and how little I’ve improved since I started. Do you have any tips for an actual true novice who is scared she’s just going to give up?
My first advice is this: stop focusing on what you can’t do, and view those things as goals to work towards by doing the beginner stuff first. If you can’t do a full push up, start on your knees or on the wall or more elevated. If you can’t do a certain yoga move ask for a less advanced version to do until you build the strength, balance, and coordination to do the advanced version.
I’ll use my experience training in Martial Arts (specifically Capoeira) as examples. In Capoeira there are a lot of very acrobatic moves that take years to learn how to do; such as doing a handstand and walking on your hands, or cartwheels with no hands, flying kicks, that sort of thing. It’s amazing to see the more experienced Capoeiristas do these moves because I know it took them years of dedicated training to do them; I view it as a peak into my future, but one I will only earn if I stick to training Capoeira and practice the less advanced versions of the moves I want to do someday.
It’s the same thing with any exercise. You EARN doing the advanced stuff by putting in the work and time and effort on the less advanced/beginner versions of the stuff that is more commonly seen in exercise.
What also might help you is to sign up for beginner fitness classes that can help teach you proper form and how to use the equipment, as well as allowing you to experiment and see what you do and don’t like. You might also try different Martial Arts styles or dance styles by trying out their beginner courses. It’s about finding what you like and what works for you in terms of your lifestyle.
@warriormale any more advice?

Thank you @commaafterdearests @guts4ammo @tialilith @ijustwantedtoresetmypassword @shoujo-wizard and @kelenloth for the responses! I'm even more fascinated with the role and powers of the Pope after reading them and it seems like a Pope can challenge tradition concerning some of the details, and has the authority to make resounding changes too. I might hit you up with questions if I can't find an answer to a question that seems legit.
One thing I got caught up in during one of my rewatches of the movie is how the Cardinals' were catastrophizing about Tedesco becoming Pope, like he could really not only halt progress, but turn back time for the church if he wanted to, because the Pope has the power to make changes and no one on earth can I overrule him (I have done some research). And that's scary for progressives like Aldo and potentially troubling to corrupt moderates like Tremblay.
But there are things in the movie that contradict the fact that the Pope is free to do things unchecked. Like one wonders if the deceased Pope -- he's literally credited as Dead Pope: Bruno Novelli -- would have dismissed Tedesco but died before he could.
Keeping in mind I'm going to read the book but haven't yet, I have a lot of thoughts about possible motivation, especially re the Dead Pope and Lawrence, and I'm going to do some speculation below the cut. (But speaking of Lawrence and book canon, does anyone know why they changed that character's name from Lomeli? I badly want to say it's a reference to T.E. Lawrence, but it's probably just because they changed his nationality.)
Getting back to the Dead Pope's last actions, why didn't he let Lawrence or Aldo know he was going to fire Tremblay? Presumably they were his confidants in some sense, and Lawrence seemed to be very close to him. Though we do know that Sister Agnes knew what caused him to act and was his agent, at least in terms of digital research and what Lawrence called spying.)
But really the only thing we know about the Dead Pope is what he left behind, and what we can observe about the people who spoke about him after he was gone. And he didn't appear to live like a person who was at ease with his considerable authority. He had to hide his research in his bed frame, and it's true that someone with that much fame and authority is under a lot of scrutiny, but that tells us that he lived like a prisoner in his most private space. That's just so depressing.
I keep thinking about those turtles as stand-ins for the Dead Pope: they're hiding under that murky water, and as Benitez says they are "so clever," but whenever they make a break for it they're either dragged back to their little habitat or run over. And why wouldn't they try to leave? Benitez even thought he was imagining the turtles, that's how out of place they are in that cold environment.
It's awful. Especially if you consider that after Lawrence decides to let Benitez be announced publicly(?) as the new Pope, he finds the latest turtle trying to escape and carefully takes it back, so everything old is new again. Poor Dead Pope, poor Benitez.
And does anyone have what they want in the end?
I think Lawrence does, and he might be the only one who's satisfied, but not simply because he thinks Benitez will be a good Pope, or because he seems to be the Dead Pope's choice, or because he believes what Benitez said about being of use -- those are all good reasons, and I think they're each equally true for Lawrence -- but I think the reason he was so distressed during the election, and before he solidified his loyalty to and his bond with Benitez and confronted his own ambition, was because he loved the Dead Pope but had grown somewhat estranged from him.
Maybe Lawrence couldn't stomach the idea of someone in his loved one's place who didn't inspire him to be better, or inspire him to see the church as something other than a place where he was installed as a sort of hopeless middle-manager. So his purpose and faith were renewed because he was able to love again, and take so much comfort in the presence of one person. Too bad he just condemned that person to live in a terrarium.
Ralph Fiennes was so great in all ways in this movie, but I adore all of his face journeys in his scenes with Benitez. They're just so tender and sad and beautiful.
I'm fixated on Conclave.
I've watched it more than once, I'm going to read the book, but know very little about christianity/catholic christianity beyond what I've picked up by osmosis or from fiction, so I've been texting a friend who grew up in that religion (and lives in a different time zone, oops) with my dumbass questions, and apparently I've asked a couple of bangers.
Like, cardinals don't wear red because the cardinal (bird) is red; not all catholic christians have to wear their cross pendant attached to a "noose thing" instead of a regular necklace, and the present day pope doesn't live in a "marble dorm," he lives in a palace!
And obviously I don't live under a rock, I know about the Vatican. Well. I know where it is. But for some reason I thought the current Pope could decide where his Vatican would be? Like if he didn't want it to be in Rome he could move it? Which is apparently not correct. 😂
Joking aside, I don't want to be disrespectful to people who practice catholic christianity by conflating their religious practice with how a religion is portrayed in a work of fiction, but I do want to understand enough to get the nuance in the movie, and to appreciate details in any fanworks that are attached to it, so I wish there was something like Conclave FAQs ... if anything like that exists please reblog or reply.

kelenloth replied to your post: i dont want to be mean to anders but i dont want...
I almost romanced Anders on my first playthrough, but I wanted to be all “I kind of like you” and Hawke goes straight to “I WOULD DIE WITHOUT YOU” and I was like um NO - i reloaded the game and refused to romance him. But then you have to be rude! I’m glad i did but still.
he doesn’t flirt with you at all if you continuously pick the purple options which is great because i love purple hawke to death lmao
but yeah its!!! really fast! and abrupt! and badly written tbh i love anders but gosh

summary: At one point in your lives, you knew Frankie better than anyone else on earth. When did that change?
warnings: none
an: fuck the US military for many reasons but especially its treatment of its soldiers

Chapter 1: All the Same to You
The legend of how you met Frankie went like this.
During her second trimester, your mother heard on the radio that the hospital was offering Lamaze classes, but unfortunately only during the day. Your father couldn’t leave work so she decided to go by herself, take notes and teach him in the evenings. The classroom was set up with tables, each with two chairs and most of them filled with couples. There was only one chair free, and the class was about to start. Your mother hurried up the aisle and rested a hand on the back of the chair.
“I’m so sorry, is this seat taken?” she asked the dark-haired woman sitting in the chair next.
The woman looked up and shook her head. “No, please.”
Your mother sat down and whipped out her notebook, struggling to find the pen that was usually attached in her black hole of a purse.
“Need a pen?” the woman offered, holding one out and smiling. Your mother gratefully accepted and the class began.
After it was over, she returned the pen to its rightful owner, introducing herself at the same time.
“I’m Ana Morales,” Ana replied, easing out of her chair with a hand pressed to her back. “How far along are you?”
“Twenty-three weeks.”
Ana’s face lit up. “Me too!”
“You’re just twenty-three?” Your mother replied, eyes wide. Then she realized what she’d said. “I’m sorry, that was–”
“No, believe me, I know.” Ana laughed. “My mother-in-law is convinced I’m having twins. The doctor says he only heard one heartbeat, but she says ‘what do men know about childbirth??’.”
Your mother grinned, chuckling. “Boy or girl?”
“Boy. Just found out a few weeks ago.” Ana ran a fond hand over her stomach. “How about you?”
“Girl. Our first.” Your mother picked up her purse, slinging it over her shoulder. “The hardest part so far is trying to find a name. Everyone has an opinion, and my husband is the worst of all. I don’t care how much he admired his English professor; I’m not naming my daughter Muriel. It’s 1980; she’ll get bullied in school.”
They fell into step, or waddle perhaps, as they left the classroom heading to the elevators at the end of the hall.
“Ah, we avoided all of that,” Ana replied. “Can’t argue against a family name. He’s going to be named after my grandfather. Francisco.”
“That’s beauti–” Your mother stopped, a hand pressing to the side of her stomach and a smile crossing her face. “She just kicked. I think she likes it too.”
“Did you hear that, Francisco? You have a new frien–” Ana gasped quietly, a hand resting on the top of her baby bump. They exchanged a wide-eyed look.
“Did he just–?”
“Yes!”
They both laughed.
By the time you were eight, you had that story memorized, rolling eyes and groaning when it was inevitably trotted out at a dinner. And by the time you were fourteen, you had your doubts about the actual truth of it. Though your mother never once cracked under any type of questioning.
What could not be denied was the fact that you and Frankie were in each other’s lives from day one. (Well, nearly day two for you. You are a whole nineteen hours older than him, after all.) There’s pictorial evidence of that. The two of you swaddled in side by side cribs in the hospital – Frankie yowling up a storm while you’re just trying to get some damn sleep.
That could have been the end of the legend. Just a funny coincidence about making your very first friend before you were even born. But then, two weeks after coming home from the hospital, the house across the street from your folks’ home went up for sale. So your mother called up her Lamaze partner and by now good friend, Ana. ‘Are you and Diego still looking for a new place?’
And Frankie became a permanent fixture in your life for twenty-two whole years. Until the US government stole him.
But that’s another story.
