OCtober Day 9
Prompt: Puzzle
Words: 632
Canon to my other stories: Yes
Additional notes: I've had this idea for over a year now! When I first started Rise and Fall. I'm glad I had an excuse to write it! This seemed like an interesting concept in general, if humans do exist in the Octonauts universe.
Angel herself doesn't appear too much, but it is about her.
Credit to @apromptingwewillgo for the prompts.
Puzzle
"Keith Bingham?"
"Yes", Angel's grandfather confirmed.
"This is Dr. James Rivers. I have the lab results from your granddaughter, Angel's clothes."
"Oh! Yes! Sonia!" Keith called to his wife. "It's about Angel!"
Sonia was quick to hurry into the room. They had been waiting weeks for this. Their granddaughter, Angel, had disappeared two years ago and nobody knew what had happened to her. Maybe now, they would have some answers.
Her jacket and T-shirt had been found on a deserted island in the South Pacific weeks ago. Fur covered the jacket and the T-shirt was torn, but, despite an intense search of the island, there was no sign of Angel. All they found were the clothes; rocks that spelled out HELP and some blood in the sand by her T-shirt.
They feared the worst. Had she been mauled to death by some kind of wild animal?
"What did you find?" Keith wanted to know, as Sonia stood close by, listening intently to her husband's side of the conversation.
"Well", Dr. Rivers began uncomfortably, "we, um... found something strange. The good news is, we don't believe she was killed by an animal. We're quite sure the shirt was cut off with scissors."
Keith breathed a sigh of relief. "Oh, thank God!" Although, he barely had a chance to register this news before he frowned. "Where did the scissors come from? Did Angel have them with her?"
"We're not sure", Dr. Rivers replied. "We didn't find any scissors on the island... But, um... that's not all..."
"What else did you find out?"
"Well, the hairs we found on her jacket were from an animal. We were right about that, but we don't believe the animal mauled Angel, based on what we've found."
"What animal were the hairs from?" Keith questioned.
"Um... Well, that's the strange part... According to the tests we did... the hairs on Angel's jacket... came from a polar bear."
Keith paused for a moment, sure he couldn't have possibly heard that right. "Excuse me?"
"I'm sorry, Mr. Bingham", Dr. Rivers apologised. "I'm just as baffled as you are."
"A polar bear?!" Angel's grandfather repeated. Sonia's eyes narrowed in confusion. Her hearing wasn't all that good. She must have misheard. "There must be some mistake!"
"I'm afraid there is no mistake, Mr. Bingham", Dr. Rivers reported ruefully. "I tested it three times and a colleague tested it three times as well. The hairs on Angel's jacket were from a polar bear. There's no doubt about it."
This didn't make any sense. Polar bears lived in the Arctic! What was one doing in the South Pacific? Sea World in Queensland, Australia, had polar bears, but wouldn't it have been big news if one of them had escaped? What had they been doing with Angel's jacket if they hadn't mauled her to death?
Unbeknownst to her grandparents, thousands of miles away and way down in the ocean, Angel slept soundly. She'd had a nightmare a few hours ago. So, she was sleeping in Captain Barnacles' bed with him.
Now that she was safe with the polar bear, she slept with a smile on her face, completely unaware of the mystery her fellow humans had uncovered about her.
"I can smell popcorn", she murmured to herself in her sleep.
"I'm sorry it wasn't more helpful", Dr. Rivers continued, genuinely sympathetic.
Keith just sighed. The disappearance of Angel Bingham had been big news. Everyone seemed to have a theory on what might have happened to her: drowned, hypothermia, eaten by sharks. Now, everything anybody thought they knew had been shattered. (Or, at least, to Keith and Sonia, it had. Dr. Rivers was smart enough to keep his findings out of the media, in fear of looking stupid.)
It was a puzzle, all right.

In the childhood memories of more than one generation, Glynis Johns, who has died aged 100, will be best remembered as the Edwardian materfamilias of the hugely popular Walt Disney musical Mary Poppins (1964). Winifred Banks, married to David Tomlinson’s George W Banks, is the mother of Jane and Michael, the children in the care of the magical nanny played by Julie Andrews. A protester for the right to vote, Winifred delivers a spirited rendition of the song Sister Suffragette – “Our daughters’ daughters will adore us. And they’ll sing in grateful chorus: ‘Well done, Sister Suffragette!’” – as the children’s previous nanny tries to quit.
But the husky-voiced actor had other claims to fame from her more than 60 films and 30 stage productions. In 1973, Stephen Sondheim composed the song Send in the Clowns for Johns when she was cast in the leading role of the premiere production of his musical A Little Night Music, on Broadway. And she had won initial stardom in the British cinema as a mermaid.
In the title role of the film comedy Miranda (1948), she travels from Cornwall to London and causes romantic complications among the Chelsea set. Although the film’s whimsy may now seem strained, it was a great commercial success in its day, making Johns a top-liner in British movies. Miranda returned in a rather belated sequel, Mad About Men (1954).
By that time, Johns had moved almost completely from stage to films, where she was associated chiefly with lightweight roles, alternately fluffy and feisty. One of her most appealing opportunities came in the thriller State Secret (1950, released as The Great Manhunt in the US), playing a cabaret artiste in a fictitious Balkan country, and gamely singing Paper Doll in a wholly invented language.
It says something for her properties of youthfulness that at the age of 30 she could play a teenage schoolgirl in the melodrama Personal Affair (1953). The same year she played in two fanciful Walt Disney British productions, as Mary Tudor in The Sword and the Rose, and as the heroine wife of Rob Roy, and she went on to make her first Hollywood picture, the Danny Kaye comedy The Court Jester, in 1955. The following year she played a cameo role in the star-studded Around the World in 80 Days.
At the time Johns alternated between American and British films, generally in subordinate roles, but a rewarding one came in The Sundowners (1960), set in Australia, as a jolly barmaid who takes a shine to a visiting Englishman played by Peter Ustinov. It brought her an Oscar nomination as best supporting actress. Top billing came in a stylish horror movie, The Cabinet of Caligari (1962). She was well enough known to American audiences by this time to star in 1963 in Glynis, a TV sitcom series that ran for just one season.
In 1966 Johns returned to the London stage in The King’s Mare, as Anne of Cleves to Keith Michell’s Henry VIII. Her Welsh heritage came into play when she took the role of Myfanwy Price in a screen version of Dylan Thomas’s Under Milk Wood (1971) starring Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor and Peter O’Toole, and two years later came her great Broadway success as Desiree Armfeldt in A Little Night Music, which brought her a Tony award.
Glynis came from a show business background: her mother, Alice Steele (nee Wareham), was a concert pianist who performed under the name Alys Steele-Payne, and her father was the prolific character actor Mervyn Johns. He was a stalwart in particular of Ealing Studios films: father and daughter appeared together in an Ealing drama, The Halfway House (1944).
Though her vocal intonations pointed to her Welshness, Glynis was born in Pretoria, South Africa, where her parents were on tour. She was reportedly carried on to the stage at the age of three weeks, and it was not too much longer before she was appearing there in a professional capacity, making her performing debut at the Garrick theatre, London, as a dancer in a revue called Buckie’s Bears (1935).
Educated at Clifton high school, Bristol, and South Hampstead high school and the Cone School of Dancing in London, she rapidly graduated to juvenile acting roles in both theatre and cinema. Her first screen appearance came at the age of 14, as politician Ralph Richardson’s troublesome daughter in South Riding (1938), and on stage she was the young sister, another Miranda, in Esther McCracken’s comedies Quiet Wedding (1938) and Quiet Weekend (1941).
That year brought the opportunity to appear in the film 49th Parallel, starring Leslie Howard and Laurence Olivier in a spy thriller intended to bolster second world war support in the US. When the prospect of playing a mermaid came after the war, she was able to draw on her theatrical versatility: “I was quite an athlete, my muscles were strong from dancing, so the tail was just fine. I swam like a porpoise.”
Johns returned to the London stage in 1977, as Terence Rattigan’s choice to play the murderer Alma Rattenbury in his well-received dramatisation of the Rattenbury case, Cause Célèbre. Her acting appearances became sporadic, though in 1989 she starred with Rex Harrison and Stewart Granger on Broadway in Somerset Maugham’s The Circle.
She was occasionally a guest star in US television series such as Murder She Wrote and The Love Boat, and played Diane’s rich mother, Helen Chambers, in the first series of Cheers (1983) and Trudie Pepper in the sitcom Coming of Age (1988-89). By the time of her final films, While You Were Sleeping (1995) and Superstar (1999), she was a characterful grandmother.
Johns was married and divorced four times. Her first husband, from 1942 to 1948, was the actor Anthony Forwood. Their son, Gareth, also an actor, died in 2007. Marriages to two businessmen followed: David Foster, from 1952 to 1956, and Cecil Henderson, from 1960 to 1962. She was married to Elliott Arnold, a novelist, from 1964 to 1973, and is survived by a grandson and three great-grandchildren.
🔔 Glynis Margaret Payne Johns, actor, born 5 October 1923; died 4 January 2024

Hey. I'm originally from Europe yes, but I live in New Zealand (yay neighbours!) I was an air hostess for a while and that helped with getting discounts, plus I'd save up any money I could and use it for travel instead of other things. I'm 5'2" and about 69 kg and I was feeling huge there 💀💀 but tbh you really have to ignore the stares and comments. I couldn't find any clothes that fit me either tbh, i needed to buy a sports bra and that didn't happen lol. And guys there are definitely an issue, I'd honestly recommend not even trying to date, it's not worth the risks. Regarding Chris, I think it was easier for him as a male, plus he speaks Korean fluently but tbh from what I've seen of him, he seems a lot more aussie than Korean in terms of personality and style. He's a Sydney boy through and through 😂
Hello @escapetheshark and its great to talk to you!!
I am watching The Try Guys where Keith eats everything from The Cheesecake Factory and I probably shouldn't have watched it while I'm on my period because now I feel like cheesecake and cheesecake is low-key one of my favourite desserts.
I'm a sucker for a classic old-school New York Cheesecake but anything chocolate I love too.
Howdy neighbour!! *waves enthusiastically*
Where in EUrope are you from and where in New Zealand do you live now and I'm so curious as to why you decided to move there.
What's it like being 26 hours ahead of everyone else?
For anyone that doesn't know, New Zealand is 2 hours ahead of Australia with timezones so New Zealand is always LEAPS ahead of the Northern Hemisphere with time.
So it's 10:08 pm here right now whereas in New Zealand, it would be about 12:08 am and the 1st of November.
I think that's really scary that you're 70 kgs and couldn't find anything to fit there and yeah-that's enough knowledge for me to feel more nervous about travelling there haha.
Bang Chan is Sydney-coded for sure and I did remember saying that even though he was born in South Korea and Korean is his first language, he's been in Sydney since he was around 5 because I remember he said he learnt English from attending Australian primary and high school.
It's why I laughed when ppl ask if he thinks in korean or english and he said it depends on what country he's in.
Honestly, if you're bilingual, I am jealous of you because being raised bilingual is truly a gift for your brain and how you connect with people.
I have been trying to learn different languages on and off for years since I was a teenager and nothing has stuck lol.
Also- fun fact...if you have Gemini or Virgo placements, you have a easier time in learning new languages because of the Mercury influence.
It was lovely to talk to you babe!

⚡️Happy Birthday to photographer extraordinaire Dominique Tarlé who took some of the of the most famous photographs in music history, including this one during the legendary Rolling Stones Exile on Main St. recordings in the South of France in 1971. 🇫🇷 You can see Dominique reflected in the mirror in this amazing shot.. 😉 Joyeux anniversaire Dominique! 🎉 @tarledominique Keith Richards reclines on the parquet floor of the luxurious Villa Nellcôte in the South of France during the legendary Exile on Main St. recordings. ✨ Seated with what appears to be his legendary 1953 Fender Telecaster - nicknamed "Micawber" - in his lap, Keith is surrounded by Anita Pallenberg, looking as stylish as ever with her legs slung over an armchair, Gram Parsons, and Parsons' girlfriend at the time, Gretchen Burrell. The guitar was supposedly gifted to him on his 27th birthday about 6 months earlier by Eric Clapton, and it remains one of his very favorite instruments to this day. ❤️ This image is the most iconic and sought-after photograph from that legedary Summer of 1971. The scene perfectly captures the long warm nights spent working out riffs and the endless mix of family and friends that streamed in and out of that estate. ☀️ This photograph is extremely rare and limited - please contact us for more information via email [email protected] or DM us here. Australian police search the house of a former RAF pilot in search of records of Chinese fighters
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 05/03/2023 - 08:14 in Military
Australian police searched the home of a former British test pilot for documents related to China's J-16 attack fighter, Australia's intelligence partners and China's largest aviation company, according to a court trial.
The search in November was part of an investigation into Western military pilots training Chinese military at a time of growing tension between China and the United States and its allies.
Britain and Australia announced repression of former military pilots working to train Chinese aviators, and Britain promised to change its national security law to prevent them from working for intermediaries, including a South African aviation school, which was allegedly helping the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) recruit pilots.
Tumblr media
Keith Hartley, a former RAF test pilot, is the second British pilot investigated for assisting in the training of Chinese pilots.
Keith Hartley, director of operations of the Test Flying Academy of South Africa (TFASA), was not charged.
He contested the validity of the search warrant in the Federal Court of Australia, questioning its wording and seeking the return of the seized material.
The court rejected his request on April 28 and released his sentence, which sheds new light on the investigation into the South African aviation school, which has a partnership with the Chinese state-owned Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) to train Chinese pilots in South Africa and employed several Western pilots with military training.
Federal police searched Hartley's house on suspicion that he had broken the law by providing military-style training directed or funded by China between 2018 and 2022, according to the Federal Court.
Tumblr media
The search warrant sought evidence to support an Australian police investigation into Hartley, who was suspected of organizing or facilitating the training provided by the flight school "for PLA pilots in relation to military aircraft platforms and military doctrine, tactics and strategy".
Hartley's lawyer, Dennis Miralis, told Reuters that he was reviewing the court's decision and seeking expert legal advice on the appeal.
“Keith Hartley and TFASA deny any criminal irregularity in this matter,” he said in a statement.
The trial shows that the police searched for digital documents and records, including emails and encrypted messages related to TFASA, PLA, four models of PLA fighters and fighter training aircraft, including the J-16 attack fighter and the J-11 fighter, AVIC documents and two individuals whose names have been edited.
Tumblr media
Police also sought references to Five Eyes intelligence partners from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United States and Great Britain, as well as NATO and the Australian air force, the trial shows.
At her trial, Judge Wendy Abraham wrote that the nature of the alleged offense would have been clear to Hartley when he read the warrant, and the police did not need to provide details of how the PLA allegedly directed or financed the training.
"The applicant did not prove that the warrant is invalid. He declares a conduct capable of constituting an offense and does so with a reasonable degree of precision," she wrote.

Community honoured at Thorne Harbour Health’s 2024 Awards
Tumblr media
Thorne Harbour Health has announced the recipients of its 2024 awards, celebrating exceptional contributions to the health and wellbeing of LGBTIQ+ communities and people living with HIV.
Tony Briffa, the world’s first and only openly intersex mayor, who recently announced their retirement, was honoured with the President’s Award.
“Tony’s tireless activism has challenged the medical establishment and advocated to governments for the right of intersex children to grow up with dignity, free from unnecessary medical interventions,” said President Janet Jukes OAM.
Two advocates for people living with HIV received Life Memberships: Kath Leane, President of Positive Life SA, and Marg Hayes, former Coordinator of the Catholic AIDS Ministry.
“Kath has been a powerful voice for the diverse HIV community, ensuring that the unique issues facing South Australians living with HIV are always front and centre at both local and national levels. Her unwavering dedication alongside her close work with our SAMESH staff continues to make a profound difference in the lives of many in the community,” said Vice-President Paul Kidd.
Special Service Awards were presented to Thorne Harbour volunteers Kellie Greene, Marc Mendoza, Angelo Todaro, and the Rainbow Local Government Group, recognising their outstanding commitment to supporting the community.
The Greig Friday Young Leader Award was presented to Elvis Martin, an inspiring community leader and refugee migrant. Since arriving in Australia, Elvis has become a prominent advocate for LGBTIQ+ multicultural communities, serving on the board of Victoria’s LGBTIQ+ and Anti-Racism Taskforces.
The awards ceremony followed the 32nd Keith Harbour Address, delivered by former ACON CEO Nicolas ‘Nic’ Parkhill AM. Reflecting on the shared legacy of ACON and Thorne Harbour Health as former AIDS councils, Nic highlighted their ongoing impact:
“We have used many lessons from the HIV epidemic to inform our ongoing work. Our organisations are built on those foundations, and even our contemporary programs reflect those fundamental principles.”
“Collectively, we are formidable. We have overcome much adversity, always standing up for what is right and just while strengthening our visibility, influence, and organisations.”

PENOLA TO ADELAIDE 21 April 2024
During our drive to Penola on 20th April we crossed the State line from Victoria into South Australia. We discovered that the speed limit out of town went up from 100km/hour to 110km/hour. In addition we gained 30 minutes as our clocks had to go back half an hour. So we are now 8.5 hours ahead of the UK instead of 9 hours in Victoria.
The drive from Penola to Adelaide was going to be over 4 hours and so we started early. We decided to focus on driving and not get diverted on to attractions on the way. Penola is in the heart of South Australian wine country so the scenery was dominated by vineyards at the start of our journey.

We decided to do a quick visit to the Naracoorte Caves. This is an UNESCO World Heritage Site and it has several caves. We were able to do a self guided tour of one cave: Stick Tomato Cave. This was the entrance:

This was the main huge chamber:

We decided that exploring some parts of the cave by crawling on hands and knees was not for us:

We resumed our journey north towards Adelaide. Once we passed through the wine country, it was very noticeable how brown all the land was which we took as evidence of long term lack of rain with a long hot summer. Although the trees have green leaves or leaves turning in colour due to the Autumn starting in Australia, we thought some trees looked stressed. Here is a photo of the typical brown/straw landscape of the farm land:

We have seen some great Autumn colours:

We stopped at a town called Keith and discovered that they have a Land Rover on a pole. It is a memorial to the development of vast areas of bush land by an insurance company in the 1950s. The early Land Rover was essential to off road travel.
Tumblr media
In another town along the road called Coonalpyn, we discovered some fabulous art. In 2017 an artist worked with five local school children and created a mural on the industrial silos within the town. It is a symbol of hope for the future.
Tumblr media
The drive into Adelaide was easy and we located the hotel without problem. Our journey as a whole had had minimal traffic. There were times during the day when we did not see another vehicle for long periods of time. We were also struck at the vast areas of land devoted to farming and vineyards. Clearly people in this and other areas of rural Australia live in very isolated tiny communities. They must be very self-sufficient!

“A BREATH OF FRESH AIR”
with Sandy Kaye
MON 2:00PM‬ & FRI 10:30PM
This week:
Leland Sklar has been a prominent figure among Hollywood session bassists with more than 2000 albums to his credit dating back to the 1970s and still counting.
His very recognisable bass playing style has been heard on hits by Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, Hall & Oates, Jackson Browne, Carole King, Phil Collins, Keith Richards, Reba McEntire to name just a few.
Over the years Leland has worked with most of the top session players in Hollywood and is especially close to his long-time friends and members of “The Immediate Family” with drummer Russ Kunkel, guitarists Dan Kortchmar and Steve Postell.
Today the Immediate Family can legitimately be called a supergroup. They have a new album and are the subject of a brand new documentary.

Jacob Elordi’s New Series: The Narrow Road to the Deep North
Tumblr media
Jacob Elordi is coming back to the screens after Saltburn (2023) and Priscilla (2023). This time, it’s in a miniseries and fans are just as eager to know what it’s all about. Here's everything that has surfaced. Jacob Elordi is changing things up again and 2024 seems to be the year when he’ll be tapping into his Aussie main-character energy. Amazon Prime Video is releasing a miniseries, The Narrow Road to the Deep North and Elordi is going to take center-stage.  The novel Turns into a Series The Narrow Road to the Deep North is based on Richard Flanagan’s 2014 Booker Prize-winning novel of the same name.  It follows the story of Dorrigo Evans and his life-changing romance with Amy Mulvaney. The book spans over decades of Evans’ life. The series is expected to break down Evans’ life into childhood, his time as a war soldier, and how he goes on to become a successful surgeon.  The novel is deep and complex and deals with Evans’ sense of self-loathing and shame. The public perceives Evans as a hero, owing to his successful surgeries and services, but it doesn’t matter to him at all and it seems like he’s haunted from the inside.  It will be very interesting to see how Jacob Elordi does justice to the role of Dorrigo Evans.  Casting  Since the series is going to be a combination of events that happened when Evans was younger and older, Jacob Elordi will be playing the titular role of younger Dorrigo Evans. Ciarán Hinds will star as older Dorrigo Evans. The main love interest of Evans, Amy Mulvaney, will be played by Odessa Young.  Apart from these main characters, other cast members include Heather Mitchell (starring as older Ella), Olivia DeJonge (young Ella), Thomas Weatherall (as Frank Gardiner), Simon Baker (starring as Keith), and Masa Yamaguchi (who’ll play the role of Lieutenant Fukuhara). It was directed by Justin Kurzel, produced by Alexandra Taussig, and distributed by Amazon Prime Video (for Australia) and Sony Pictures Television (for worldwide distribution). The Narrow Road to the Deep North is a period drama series that has an undertone of gloom and misery, the hardships of war, and the undying memory of first love.  What we (the fans) can Expect The Narrow Road to the Deep North is going to be a 5-part series, so it’s believed that the book will be covered in great depth. The series is still in the production phase, with 5 months worth completed. The shooting took place in various locations in New South Wales, Australia, so viewers will get the full Aussie experience with just the right dose of heartache, emotional scenes, and gut-wrenching realities of WWII. Romance amidst wars always had a special place in my heart so this one is already on my watchlist. From Kissing Booth (2018) to Saltburn, Jacob Elordi is experimenting with genres, and since this is a period drama series. For someone who started his career with the rom-coms has come full circle with another serious romance. Let’s see what he has in store for us this time. The series doesn’t have an official release date yet, but it seems worth the wait.    Read the full article

Looks like Keith Richards!!
In 1928, an Ice Man in Houston, Texas, pictured delivering a 25 pound ice block.
Selling ice was a big business during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Ice was taken from ponds and rivers and transported worldwide by train or boat. It was then distributed locally by ice wagons.
Frederic Tudor, the "Ice King," started the ice trade in 1806. He began by shipping ice from New England to his rich customers in the Caribbean.
As the years went by, he started shipping ice to Cuba, the southern U.S., and eventually to places as far as India, Australia, China, and South America.
The ice trade was a big employer at its peak, with 90,000 workers and 25,000 horses in the U.S. alone. The demand for ice increased during World War 1, but once the war was over, the trade declined due to new refrigeration systems.
By the 1930s, more households had modern fridges; by the 1950s, they were almost everywhere in the U.S. and Europe.
