Letter from my future self!

At Markland Financial, we believe that your mindset is as responsible for your financial health as any other single factor.  One of the most important things to helping make good financial decisions is perspective.  But if we are 18, we can be too young to consider the future; at 80, we have more perspective (and wisdom) but less time to apply it.  Wouldn’t it be nice if the older you could share some of their thoughts with you today?  

Below, i took a shot at composing a letter to myself as a thought starter for you.  It is not comprehensive, it is not accurate (my wife’s name isn’t Josephenia!) and it is definitely not perfect.  But even just doing an example one has given me perspective on my own life (I’ll call a few more buddies today, just to check in on them) and I think it will help you as well. 

Don’t get too caught up in thinking about this, don’t try and add details that may or may not come true, just consider where Future You is and what you are doing (or can be doing) so that they are grateful for what did versus having too many regrets?  Feel free to reach out with questions on how to write the letter if you have any!  #MarklandFinancial 

Dear Matt,

               Hello!  It is me, well, rather it is you, writing to you from the future and I just wanted to share a few things with you and let you know how much I appreciate some of the things you did for me back in the day!  As you know, you are currently unemployed and, while you are confident in your plan to take care of your family, we both know you are a little apprehensive.  Suffice it to say, you end up okay. I don’t want to spoil it for you but keep up your website and side hustle, that leads to some interesting opportunities later and leaving retail ends up being the BEST THING that could have happened to you professionally.  Trust me.

               You are currently married to Josephenia and, I am happy to say, you are still going strong today! Bobby has become so self-sufficient, it is scary but he is needing a vehicle and college isn’t too far away.  I am happy that mom left some money for any educational needs Harry has but I really wish you had started saving earlier for his car.  We probably will be getting him something he can learn in, so we didn’t need a lot, but that extra car payment could have been avoided.  Ahh well, such is life!

               On the positive side, however, your early retirement savings are going to come in very handy in the extremely near future.  And the fact that the house is just about paid off will free up another $1k a month or so for living expenses so you and Meg will be safe and comfortable for your golden years.  I do have to say, though, that if you had put away a little more and maybe done with less Molina’s, that trip to Europe you are eying wouldn’t feel so far out of your financial comfort zone right now.  Nothing to be done about it now, but I do wish you had eaten a little less Jose’s dip and put a little more in the travel fund!

               Speaking of Jose’s dip, health wise, I’d say we are okay.  We are on a few meds and still need to lose a few pounds, like always.  The biggest thing is our knees, not in the greatest shape.  It would be good if you lost those lbs. sooner rather than later to help prevent them from bothering me every night but it could be worse.  I will say that cutting back on your drinking would be a good idea to help drive those pounds out.  Such empty calories and you do not need that much booze these days so why not slow down now rather than later?  And good thing Jo made us eat healthy, I am in a much better situation than many of my friends and family!  

               Ah, friends and family!  We keep in touch with our best friends.  Of course, we have lost one or two along the way but that is part of life, isn’t it? I am not going to share who because that would be terrible information to know but  I did have regrets in not reaching out to them and being closer, and that has led me to try and really prioritize my top members of the tribe and stay connected to them for the rest of my life.  I do not want any more regrets like that!

               Well, that is about it for now.  I cannot give away too much, otherwise, you could cheat and bet on sports and win a billion dollars on the Browns winning the Super Bowl in 202…. not giving you that year,  that would make life too easy for you!  But before I go, I want to let you know of a few regrets I /we have.  

               Not spending as much time with Mom on the ranch before she passed. Wasting money on things that do not mean that much, I really wish we had spent more on experiences and not stuff, you know?   That wasted money could be paying for that trip to the space station that Bobby is asking about and would come in handy. But that is a small thing, nothing too worrisome; you did alright.

Take care, stay safe, cut back on the booze and, when you see that random lady, make sure to ask if she is okay.  You will know what I mean.
