The Owlman Saga (...again with parallel Earths), Part 1: Deep Cover for Batman

[All images are owned by DC Comics and Warner Bros. Animation. I hope I’m too small-fry to sue…] 

One of the things about DC being a multiverse is that anything the writers can come up with that doesn’t fit the current narrative can be published and call it an “alternate Earth”. DC did this for years with their Elseworlds titles. Technically, Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns are “Elseworlds”, though they were published before DC came up with that line.

However, one universe that was canon before Crisis was Earth-3, in which the DC heroes were villains and vice-versa. This has been done once before for televised animation (though technically a second version was done in which the heroes went overboard)

Despite the fact that Earth-3 (though it obviously wasn’t called that since that universe technically didn’t exist any more) was done a number of times in DC animated films, the writers of The Brave And the Bold felt it was time to once again bring the concept to the small screen in this two-part story.

[QUICK NOTE: In the main DC (Earth-1) timeline, there are two Red Hoods. The second is former Robin Jason Todd, who became a lethal vigilante after returning from the dead after being blown up by the Joker (he later became less of a killer and was absorbed back into the Bat Family)

The first…is a bit complicated. One of the many possible origins of the Joker (the writers liked keeping his actual origin ambiguous) is that he was a masked criminal known as the Red Hood who fell into a vat of chemicals that scarred his body (giving him his trademark look) and psyche (leaving him homicidally psychotic)

Guess which version this Red Hood is based on.]

As for those who attacked Red Hood…they’re not exactly who you think they are.

Meet Owlman, Blue Bowman, Scarlet Scarab, and Silver Cyclone (collectively known as the Injustice Syndicate), who come from a parallel Earth similar to Earth-3 (with Red Hood being one of the heroes who oppose them; they’re the villain versions of Batman, Green Arrow, Blue Beetle Jamie Reyes, and Red Tornado)

With the phase oscillator in their possession, the Injustice Syndicate makes plans to conquer all of the Earths!

Uh oh…

The Injustice Syndicate heads to execute “Plan B”

They arrive at the facility where the Promethium 90 is stored.

(You know, I think I’m more than a bit creeped out by Scarlet Scarab)

Silver Cyclone says that if the Promethium 90 is exposed to air, it will degrade and be unusable.

Unfortunately, before Batman can break the containment…

Four on one…is the Red Hood insane?!

Batman manages to separate the Red Hood from the others and reveals himself.

He then gives Red Hood an earpiece communicator so they can stay in contact before knocking him out so his cover can stay intact.

However, the Injustice Syndicate obtained the Promethium 90 so Silver Cyclone can build his bomb.

Later, at the Injustice Syndicate’s HQ (the Hall of Injustice?), Batman asks Blue Bowman where Red Hood is being held.

[OK, a couple of things to unpack from that clip:

Yes, Red Hood is this world’s Joker, but heroic (and maybe not quite as insane)

I was wrong about what I said earlier about Scarlet Scarab: I’m more than a LOT creeped out by him!]

With that, Batman climbs into the exhaust ducts as Silver Cyclone figures out what Red Hood is up to.

Having learned where Batman is, Silver Cyclone goes into the ducts and throws a windstorm Batman’s way…

…blowing him into a giant fan! (there’s always a giant fan in these places, isn’t there?) Fortunately, Owlman packs explosives in his utility belt, which Batman uses to destroy the fan. He then works his way to the Syndicate’s trophy room.

With that, Batman breaks into the Syndicate’s prison and frees the Red Hood. Then the Syndicate shows up.

[QUICK NOTE: The other members of the Syndicate are (left to right) Dyna-Mite (the Atom), Rubber Man (Plastic Man), Barracuda (Aquaman), and Blaze (Fire)]

With that, Batman opens the cells, freeing the other heroes.

[They are: General Grodd (Gorilla Grodd), and Yellow Lantern (Sinestro), plus hero versions of Doctor Polaris, Black Manta, and Gentleman Ghost (who weren’t renamed as heroes)]

And now, for the climactic Final Battle!
