You mentioned ghoul scent markings-- can you elaborate on that? Explain it and dump any other thoughts you have about it?
So, I feel like ghoulification would heighten all of the senses (*within the confines of what tissues can remain intact over long spans of time, like centuries; we see older ghouls, especially, with things like cataracts, etc. that would would obviously impact your perception), but the sense of smell especially. Smell is widely considered to be the "weakest" of the human senses, but if you were constantly regenerating the smell receptors that are physically closest to your brain, along with having basically one massive nostril, I'd think you'd at least smell SOMEWHAT more effectively.
I've seen people assume that, as ghouls eventually lose their noses to decay, they have no sense of smell, and (absolutely no disrespect or anything) I find that sort of funny. The olfactory sense ultimately originates in the brain, like any other sense, and the smell receptors that pick up on odors are not only found in the cartilaginous parts of the nose AKA the part that would rot off.
Scent memory is also one of the strongest kinds of memory, as the olfactory bulb that processes smells is located very close to the amygdala and the hippocampus, the memory centers of your brain. For this reason, I think that many ghouls, but particularly ferals, would be incredibly sensitive to smells, even if their particular "nose" is weak from decay. I'd imagine that ferals, as they slip further and further into the sort of aggressive, rotting dementia state we see them in, would still be able to connect with some human memories through smells. I think this may be one of the things that draws them to people so easily, even when you're trying to sneak past them.
Imagine moldering away for years and years, rational and conscious thought basically lost to you, and then, for just a breath, you smell a long-lost loved one's perfume, a favorite food you haven't tasted in decades, a fresh rain after a long, long dry spell. Just for a moment...you can remember.
All that to say that I think smell would be a very big deal for ghouls. Especially the smell of people they care about. One day, the memory of that smell may be quite literally all they have left.
I'm not sure most of them would be conscious of the fact that it's scent marking, but it wouldn't be uncommon to find ghoul lovers (ghouls who are lovers AND those who love ghouls) swapping clothing, reveling in their partner's smell enveloping them and vice versa. Taking their lover around other ghouls and knowing that the fact that the others can smell them all over you means they know you're theirs. Ghouls smelling another ghoul on you and knowing all your business without you even having to say anything.
(Plus...it's just a fun excuse to not have to pull out, you know?)

FNV Minor Character Poll - GRAND FINALS
Tumblr media
Left: Keely, field researcher for the NCR Office of Science and Industry. —"These people [in Vault 22] died trying to stop a monster of their own creation. Failing to complete their work would mean they died in vain. And that's what I intend to do."
Keely was the fifth seed in the tournament overall and the winner of the A-side bracket. She beat Antony, Mr. RADical, Mick & Ralph, Trudy, and Easy Pete to enter Grand Finals.
Right: Beatrix Russell, hired guard at the Old Mormon Fort and potential sex worker at the Atomic Wrangler. —"I've been around long enough to observe patterns of human behavior. Physical and mental anguish are especially exciting to explore."
Beatrix was the seventh seed in the tournament overall and the winner of the B-side bracket. She beat Chomps Lewis, the Lonesome Drifter, Siri, Daisy Whitman, and No-Bark Noonan to enter Grand Finals.
Designated cheerleaders were not available for this match-up.

are you going to run your own fallout character tournament poll at some point? it sucks this one didn't get to finish
i don't think the world needs a third tournament about the companions but i have thought about a "FNV minor character tournament" with oliver swanick, ranger ghost, keely, major knight, etc., characters like that who show up in one place one time and just might have stolen your heart as they did. Now that is a tournament that I'd be excited to see the outcome of. But I'm not thinking about it doing it anytime soon, I'm trying to finish the next IKROAH lmao

any hc's for keely from NV?
yep!
used to be really upset over the disintegration of information as time wore on and humans played a weird generational game of telephone, but now she sees it as a chance to help humans avoid past mistakes.
and, as long as it isn’t inherently harmful, she may humor a few theories about what pre-war life was like
still gets low-key irritated when people mispronounce names that used to be more commonly known (Tucson, anybody?)
She wasn’t actually a scientist before the war, though she was always interested in various fields (mainly chemistry and biology)

What’re your top 10 minor new vegas NPCs and why 👀👀
In no particular order!:
1. Eyepatch Great Khan
Tumblr media
Eyepatch Great Khan has one of the most unique designs in the game for an NPC with no unique dialogue. The first time I saw them I went directly up to them to talk because they give off quest-giving energy.
2. Davison the Nightkin
Tumblr media
Davison is here mostly because of how he's worked into Come Fly With Me. If you don't make him hostile by killing his companions, he'll actually talk to the Courier. I love that you can actually help him and the other Nightkin if you don't go in treating them like monsters to be killed. Very cool. Very nice.
3. Jules
Tumblr media
Cowboy and also aligns most closely with what I wish the Desert Rangers were in lore: members of their community who actively protect it because they're a part of it. I like him. Cowboy. Handsome. Will teach you survivalist stuff.
4. Snuffles
Tumblr media
First time I ever used console commands was to raise my med skill high enough to heal Snuffles.
5. Keely
Tumblr media
Keely does science, loves women and takes no shit. She's my favorite part of Vault 22 which is saying something since Vault 22 is one of my favorite parts of FNV.
6. Old Lady Gibson
Tumblr media
Cool lore. She's one of the characters who adds a lot of flavor to the world because of the job she does and the life she lives. There's dogs there too!
7. 10 of Spades
Tumblr media
10 of Spades my beloved. I like his design, I like his character writing, he is one of the only First Recon characters I like talking to in-game; the other is Bitter Root.
8 & 9 . Anne and Morgan Blake
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I like these two because of the lore they provide regarding the Thaler act and NCR sharecropping. Talk to them. I think it's especially interesting the soldiers (Ortega) advertised to the sharecroppers as protection try to discredit Morgan's opinions on the NCR and the fruitlessness of Californian agricultural efforts in the Mojave.
10. The NCR Arms Dealer
Tumblr media
I like the character writing and I like what she shows us about the NCR military. Cool that she questioned a military superior because she didn't want to be cruel to people under her command and cool that she shows us people who do this get discharged for insubordination, which tells us all we need to know about why NCR military leadership is That Way.

Hey, happy Wrath month~ (Mostly joking). So after the Burned Horse plinko I'm thinking of FNV things again: what was your Courier / main FNV run like, with faction choices and perks and whatnot? Also, crucially, how cool was their hair?
Ah, wrathful tidings, Goose! Thanks for the ask. It's been a bit since the last time I played NV, so let me see… I'll put this under a cut.
I've played through to the final battle twice and finished the game once. My Courier has always been named Courier, because I'm boring.
The first time, it was my first-ever playthrough, and I sided with House and didn't do a lot of sidequests. I wasn't really sure what was going on, I was super unprepared for the battle, and I don't even remember what gender Courier I played. The only companion I recruited was Rex.
The time I actually finished the game, I was a female Courier with, I believe, the hairstyle that looks like Veronica Lake (reference). I usually pick the same perks each time: Good Natured, Small Frame, 10% extra damage against binary genders, and the perks that let you carry a lot of stuff. I love crafting and cooking in this game; I usually put lots of points in Science, Speech, and Survival. My Courier's home base is Wolfhorn Ranch until she gets to the Lucky 38.
Courier #2 sided with Ringo in Ghost Town Gunfight, killed Benny in his sleep, recruited everyone, completed Veronica's personal quest with her leaving the Brotherhood, didn't ask Boone the right question in time to get his quest, freaked out about Cass's vengeance thing and didn't get through it, helped Keely destroy Vault 22, recruited that one guy from prison for Sheriff of Primm, resolved the issues at the Ultra-Luxe without embarrassing or eating anyone, spared/helped Tabitha, spared the Nightkin in the rocket facility basement, spared pretty much everyone else it was possible to spare, and ultimately ended up siding with Yes Man/Independent New Vegas while maintaining a decent reputation with everybody but the Legion and the belated Mr. House. There are so many questions and sidequests and divergent moments in this game, I'm definitely missing something!
I haven't done a playthrough yet where the Courier helps Benny escape from the Fort, mostly because I've never been at a high enough level to try it, but I'd like to build a character sometime for whom that choice actually works on a roleplaying level. I can't decide which companion (not Boone) it would be funniest to have accompanying the Courier at the time. Just, the conversation after they've successfully fought their way out of the Fort, LMAO -- especially if it's an impulsive decision from the companion's point of view. That just delights me to think about.
Also, my personal canon Courier always goes the Independent route, but -- as I may have mentioned before -- I'd be interested to develop an anti-villain sort of female Courier who sides with the Legion for "if men were stronger and more disciplined, they could protect me, and then I wouldn't need to go around doing all this violence" reasons. If that makes sense? Like, an internalized misogyny "I'm the exception who proves the rule, and women who don't want to be subjugated are just weak and whiny" (many eyeroll emojis) type of thing. But then, of course, my brain wants her to change her mind and either go independent at the last minute or usurp Caesar… hmm… that would be very satisfying to me. I don't have the time or skill to pull off a fic like that right now though ^^;
Not in any playthrough yet have I managed to learn the Sunset Sarsaparilla Star Bottle Cap secret. For another time, perhaps.

❤ Favorite Male: arcade my beloved... ❤ Favorite Female: veronica <3<3<3 i wish her ending was better ❤ Favorite Pairing: veronica+christine, they deserve peace after everything theyve been thru ❤ Least Favorite Character: kind of unimportant but fantastic at helios one, there’s a rotten spot in hell for men who act like they know more about science than i do when they clearly do not ❤ who’s most like me: its a copout to say the pc but im from vegas with a hole in my head so all i need is a job at the post office ❤ most attractive: arcade comes to mind first but victor also bc my taste is metallic ❤ three more characters that I like: raul, ed-e, and keely from vault 22!!

There Stands the Grass is the first piece of writing in FNV that's just outright idiotic.
You might as *well* turn the data over to Hildern if exposure to the spores is innocuous enough that you can wave Keely goodbye and head straight back to New Vegas. I thought the whole vault might be a nonstandard game over "sorry, you're going to miss the Second Battle of Hoover Dam because you're about to die of plague, reload before you entered the vault"- what the hell happened to the mercenaries, given that the things in the vault are barely harder than geckos? Why is Keely encuraging me to leave at all? How did the writers think any of this made any sense???
