And and AND as a fellow ORV fan, I just wanted to share this fact that devasted me- Kim Dokja scarifies 49% of himself, Yoo Joonghyuk loses half of his memories (might have to dig deeper to explain this) and Han Sooyoung lost half of her soul that just go on to know Dokja's past and then sacrifies herself(and maybe the whole world) to save him. And YK the most interesting fact about all this is, Dokja turns out to be the most selfish one of all three. Yes he continues to sacrifice himself the entire time but at what cost? He hurts his friend everytime and consciously or sub consciously he ignores this fact and continue to do WHAT HE THINKS IS RIGHT. And the part where he keeps 51% of his memories to himself just prove this. I ended up ranting but yh just wanted to share this ツ (Nice to meet you!)

i get what you’re saying, it’s an interesting perspective. i can’t help but think though, there isn’t really a universal ‘right’ thing to do is there? there’s always going to be people who gain and people who lose. like the story mentioned it’s impossible to have a story without sacrifice. yeah kdj hurt kimcom by sacrificing himself but the fact of the matter is that the world would have come to a stop if not for it. i don’t know if he ignores the fact any more than he realises that the benefit of them being alive living their lives outweighed the loss of his presence.

even kimcom had accepted that it was something that had to be done. if not for kdj, who could’ve stepped up? the world would’ve never gone back to normal and the author told us from the beginning that kdj hated endings. he hates it when the story fell out of his grasp and he hated being alone. being selfish would’ve meant finding a way to stay with kimcom even if it meant staying in the library. all those times he sacrificed himself throughout the book were so that he could see an end where he’d be with his family but he had to give that up.

i think doing what you believe is right doesn’t necessarily coincide with what you want to do. being selfish would mean putting your own desires over that of others. but sometimes fate forces your hand and you have to work with what you have to the best of your ability. yes kimcom would’ve rather died than let go of dokja but what about the rest of the world? yes kimcom were hurt but they survived. dokja is by no means a hero but he weighed the pros and cons and decided that that was the best path he could take. when you think about it, hsy dooms millions of worlds just so that dokja made it past fifteen. so our measures on who is ‘more’ selfish can be subjective.

i remember recently reading a chapter where dokja said that on first glance you might think yjh is a realist because of how cold he is but the truth was that he was the most idealist person of them all. it was dokja’s realism that allowed kimcom’s idealism to exist. i’m not saying dokja hasn’t made some selfish choices but i don’t think becoming the oldest dream was one of them.

the WOS characters are instead rewritten into reality. there is no apocalypse. they're all living their best normal lives. yjh is a successful pro-gamer and he's not weighed down by failures of a thousand lifetimes. maybe bihyung is his overworked manager lmao. yma gets to grow up with her older brother and there's no need to worry if she'll see him again. sys grows up happy and loved without blood in her hands. her dog grows with her, unharmed. her parents adopted lee gilyoung. ljh goes to uni w nbr. maybe she's yjh's gaming protege. jhw works with uriel at their own law firm. lhs lives his life volunteering and he doesnt rigidly follow the soldier's manual anymore. lsh is one of the top doctors in the country.

hades and persephone run a successful chain of gourmet restaurants with branches all over the globe. abfd is han sooyoung's cousin who annoys her at any opportunity. he and knw are chuuni bros. maybe they cosplay together too lmao. sun wukong's either a famous martial artist or an actor, ill get back to u on that.

HOW COULD KDJ RUTHLESSLY BREAK YJK'S HEART??? AND WHAT HAPPENED TO THE SIMPING FAITHFULNES OF HSY???

anyways, that is happening there in that studio, while on the other side of town, yoo joonghyuk and yoo sangah have enlisted kimcom to take down the fearsome mafia to save the two fool that aren't even in trouble.

naturally this epsiode will feature hilarious cutawar moments such as thsi one...

Not too far away, Lee Gilyoung and Shin Yoosung are arguining on how they will punish the criminals for taking Kim Dokja away (the adulst of kim com failed to remeber how the kids have access to the baby monitors), kimcom for leaving them out of the rescuing ('that jerkface is going to pay for keeping me from rescuing hyung!!"), and each other for allowing such a tragedy to take place. All while a fierce baby Biyoo chimes on with an ocassionaly 'Baat!']

this is some of my delusional orv thoughts about a what-if KDJ did read the novel, but when the scenarios started he doesn't stay at the same planetary system as YJH. KDJ tweaking his way to the final wall, become the most ancient dream and stay at the subway, trying to find YJH. did KDJ made companions at his planetary system? yes, and he really treasure them but his feeling toward YJH is strong enough he choose to stay at the subway, knowing the pain he has to go through. KDJ tells this to his closest companion/friend, YSA. they tried to stop, but his stubbornness won.

KDJ, with his status as the oldest dream, left an avatar contained most of his memories in this worldline to his companions. and walk into the eternity with his companions' blessings. they respected his choice, knowing how much KDJ love TWSA and his wish to repay the debt.

(side note: TWSA cast and HSY isn't there.

it's more like TWSA main cast didn't existed in KDJ's original worldline. HSY is dead for the sake of writing TWSA (read: plot), but we will talk about it later. incarnations originated from planetary system 8612 did not appeared in KDJ'S earth, but Namgung Minyoung, Kyrgios, others from different dimensions and magically, asuka ren are there.

JHW although doesn't become YJH's companion, but her existence as the mad butcher is enough for her to not existed in KDJ's original worldline.)

after spent who knows how long in the subway, watching all the worldlines (he felt bad about it), KDJ stumbled upon the first worldline that has YJH in it. but this YJH is weird. he is acting naive, clueless about scenarios. KDJ realized he's in the 0th turn. needless to say, KDJ went crazy and swear that he will do his best to give this YJH his happy ending. he succeeded. and then everything come crashing down.

YJH wishes to meet the star helping him numerous times. 4th wall choose that moment to whisper the solution.

YJH regress. KDJ breakdown.

times passed. at some point, KDJ uses his authority as the oldest dream to let a part of himself incarnate into planetary system 8612, watching himself living the same hell he once went through. his mom went to prison because of his other self. the living hell called school. his suicide attempt.

and he's looking at the young girl enter his room, holding his hand as if he were something precious. the dokkaebi king, the only one could see him, send him an ominous look.

KDJ now know why TWSA was written. he wailing, repeatedly asking the young girl despite she can't hear or see him.

4th wall and dokkaebi king stay silent, watching KDJ crying himself to sleep. after a long while, he finally accepted the truth, and begin watching both himself and HSY.

he adores the author, but SSSSS-grade Infinite Regressor made him cursed her a lot. she can do better, not this shit show of novel.

life's hard. KDJ watching other self, HSY, YJH as the same time. no, he shouldn't call the name YJH, he's now secretive plotter. there are numerous times he wanted to reach out to SP, told him to stop chasing, but thr worldline probability and 4th wall reject him. how HSY exhausted her fables to write TWSA, his other self living a hellish life, the guilt of being SP's sponsor is rubbing even more salt onto his already wide-open wound. KDJ doesn't remember how many times he had cried himself to dream, how many times he told them to stop, but failed miserably. but at least he is able to do sth for them. he's there to protecting KDJ and SP's dreamscape. he's there, ready to use his probability to ease KDJ and HSY's pain.

he abandoned his identity as 'reader' to become a 'guardian', a 'dreamer'. he's no longer 'kim dokja' but most ancient dream, the god.

everytime KDJ and SP has nightmare, OD would enter their dream and offer them comfort. he talks about TWSA with KDJ, he uses himself as a wall separate SP's subconscious from hauting memories. everytime HSY feels too much fatigue, he's there to take it away.

but times can change a person a lot. OD had already feel numbed after round 700s. but now? he become more and more unresponsive to things he used to feel worse about. he only feels exhausted, tired, dissociated. OD sometimes forgets his story and old identity as 'kim dokja', if not for 4th wall. sometimes he just wakes up and frightened, has a panic attack and after 4th wall's consolation, he goes back to dream. if the panic attack is too severe, he will try to commit suicide. lots of things has happened during thousands of years staying at the subway, and OD never wanted to talk about it.

time flies. OD begins to watching his old companions, YJH's companions, and YJH himself. he went nuts about YJH's abysmal diets and his fucked up life, basically cursed that piece of shit for daring to poisoned YJH's food, made him refused to eat other's food. OD swears he'll torture that worth-less-than-insect bastard and comminute that trash's soul to pieces and burn it using uriel's hell flame. 4th wall, watching his god spending 1h to cursing that man, enjoy the spectacle. it's been years since the last time OD engaged in something this much.

the scenario begin. OD's eyes tearing up for hearing his dear author final words, strengthen his resolve to help YJH and SP reach their happy ending. and doing his best to help KDJ reaching the 'ending' they longed for. OD usually stick to KDJ or YJH's side, but he also wanders around n'gai forest and HSY's side. 1863rd soon becomes his new stop. OD could only watches 1863!YJH sacrificing his everything to reach the eternal slumber.

if 4th wall said OD cried himself to dream, he'd deny that statement.

OD, despite cheering for KDJ, is envy of him. if 4th wall has to make a comparison, then it would compared them to SP's feeling toward YJH. he yearns to become YJH's companion, desperately so, but he could only stuck at the subway or as a phantom hovering around.

4th wall and OD continues watching the worldline in complete silence, their minds race with thousand thoughts.

What trope would you put Joongdok in?

i honestly think that when it comes to joongdok it would be much easier if i answered with the tropes i WOULDNT put them in 😭😭

oh boy here i go! let's start with two of the most obvious first:

1. matching outfits with opposite color schemes, and 2. opposites (leo & aquarius) attract (<- attract as in lowkey bordering in codependency)

yin & yang - not only are joongdok aesthetically yin&yang but narratively too (i mentioned in a previous ask that they're sky & earth too)

star-crossed - (if you believe in orv's sad ending)

life (and death) companions - is probably a trope on its own considering the meaning of the title. not only does it mean (i ran the term through a thesaurus so yall don't have to 👍🏻👍🏻) "a romantic partner with whom one is exceptionally or uniquely compatible or has a special connection" but the synonyms are also of the romantic variety ranging from (but not limited to) life partner, best friend, soulmate, spouse, true love, one's promised, significant other, love of one's life, beloved, heart's desire etc (long story short, pretty sick tbh. no wonder kr dudebros threw a fit in singshong's comment section over it. i get it) and what makes it infinitely funnier is that it started as crack being treated seriously 😭😭😭😭

anyway, continuing where i left off, Soulmates - kdj is the reason yjh exists. yjh is the reason kdj lives. (hsy wrote both of them in a way that they became each other's salvation hence their position of reader-protagonist gets switched in the epilogue and both of them have admitted that reading about the other's story has saved their lives)

everyone ships them/everyone can see it - uriel, gabriel, ljh, hsy, jhw, lsh, anna croft, persephone/hades (the third eligible candidate to marry kdj was yjh and you will never be able to convince me otherwise. also if you have an answer other than yjh ur wrong), yma (if webtoon dares not to draw the "oppa looks happy when thinking about that ahjussi" you'll see me on the news) the wenny king. heck even gong pildu, upon some consideration and by method of elimination, deduced that theres no way kdj has enough rizz to pull neither ysa nor hsy therefore who was left to be the one who helped kdj birth his "child" (kidified sp) ??? yjh obv 😭😭 and why would he question the possibilities of mpreg when hmo is right there anyway. heck hmo even told kdj that he should try it.

when one is hurt/dying/dead, the other rages, panics, is extremely distressed - (maybe there's a shorter way to say this like "who did this to you" but joongdok have ascended past cheesy romances 😝) disaster of flood arc, aftermath of dark castle, the fight with surya, 1863, aftermath of sp's kidnapping etc

hates everyone but you - sure yjh doesnt hate All constellations but he for sure hates all demon kings. (mini fun fact about me, up until joongdok rebranded my brain, i didnt like this trope)

will sacrifice everyone/everything for the other - *cracks knuckles* when 41st sys tries to give yjh a 2nd chance to save himself and his old companions and all he had to do was say that kdj isn't his companion. when kdj admits that 1863rd hsy's plan to see the ending of the scenarios is smart and well-thought out but because that world doesn't need yjh he doesn't cooperate. (side story spoilers below, but when you think about it long enough the side story came to be because yjh spread orv to lhh's worldline. all the deaths happening because yjh needs to collect a fragment of kdj's soul from that world)

speaking of lhh, reincarnation - now hear me out. not your typical reincarnation but bcs we know that 49kdj's wish was to reincarnate into someone that doesn't have anything to do with kimcom -> subtrope: doesn't want to be found / is found

It can be argued that while Yoo Joonghyuk represents surviving under the cruel eye of an audience and Kim Namwoon the choice to hide under a delusion in order to survive an abusive situation, Lee Jihye could represent the guilt of living on through the sacrifice of another. As for Lee Hyunsung, he may represent may represent the difficulty of leaving the world that you’ve managed to comfortably craft for yourself in order to live in the cruel reality, as evident in the Master of Steel arc. We could extend this even further to Yoosung, who as a child has to live knowing there’s blood on her hands and believing herself to be bad, and to Uriel in that the act of observing another’s story does not necessarily denote you as cruel, and in fact can be a sign of your empathy as well.

In short, tls123 may have crafted key characters in the world of Three Ways to Survive the Apocalypse to represent specific facets of Kim Dokja as an individual, thus strengthening his ability to attach himself to the story even further and allows the author to construct the messages she intended to convey to her reader as best she could. hsy wrote wos so that kdj could survive, she embodied each character with the intent to help kdj live.

yoo joonghyuk was his ideal, his brother, his father, his oldest friend. kdj wanted to become him, wanted to continue living, to surviving just like him.

okay, essentially, another lense you can consider in this point is how all the other original wos characters and their relationship with yjh is also pivotal in constructing hsy's message and intent so that kdj can survive. for example, there's already so many jokes about kim namwoon being hsy insert of kdj and thats why kdj hated knw so much but its a perfectly good point. knw was a delusional chuuni who distorted the world and socially acceptable morals so much into his own ideals to simply survive. but he was a kid, a teenager. he lived an okay life but was thrust into hell. and yoo joonghyuk always picked him up, always picked him and saved him and took him under his wings. even when he became mad when using the power of abyssal black flame dragon, yjh always picked him up. kdj seeing someone so close to him hated knw and yet was extremely jealous and longing for that level of reassurance. even if he was useful, kdj couldn't understand why this chuuni delulu was always picked by yjh but saw that his idol did. and kdj was saved knowing that if someone as annoying as knw could be useful, he could be too.

likewise, lee jihye represents surviving at the cost of someone else's sacrifice but also another representative of kdj's longing for a mentor figure. she and knw who yjh always picked and, while in the later regressions he used them, in the beginning he still looked after them, raised them through the hell of scenarios. these early regression chapters would have also been released during kdj's high school, where under the reign of his bullies and right after his attempt, kdj probably read this and saw himself in knw and ljy's place, being cared for by yjh.

everything you said about lee hyunsung is perfect but another aspect you can consider is that while he was comfortable in his life as a soldier, lhs also kinda hated it i think? i always thought he didnt like it and in my interpretation he thought following orders and being part of the military was all he could be and restricted himself to that label because going beyond that was confusing and scary ordeal. ahem, parallels to kdj who restricted himself to the label of murderer's child and the other labels he attached to himself later on which always made him into a villain of his own inner narration. additionally, kdj's time in the military was also terribly unlucky, horrible and he despised it. maybe reading about lhs's juxtaposing feelings of both comfort and dislike was another source of comfort for kdj while he was in the military.

lhs' relationship with yjh was probably closer to that of a comrade but still someone who was guided by yjh. he was yjh's and party's strongedt shield. he was also their strongest sword. lhs is a loyal, upright man but even he could kill for the sake of love.

ah mmm sys is a complicated matter while yes she is a blood stained child who was definitely a companion to yjh for some regressions, she was also the calamity for quite a few of them and someone who yjh killed as a child so that her future self didn't wreck the world. which is ... wow foreshadowing for kdj and od i guess. but she was also someone who loyally followed her captain, who spent thousands of years in the dark of the universe to bear him information, who gladly discarded herself for him. allsk more parallels wow.

you're definitely right about uriel being a representative of how not all constellations are cruel even in the og!wos. even if yjh still hated them, he could not hate uriel or kdj later on. otherwise his 999th turn, he would not have given his all to his companions which included her too. because even though she was a viewer of his story, she loved the story. while our perception of uriel is mostly based on how she is in the 1864th turn, from what we saw of 999th and 1863rd turn, we know of her passion, her grief, her destruction and her love. that for all her power, she still could not save the two she loved in those turns. she could not save her eden.

That's why I stuck with Yoo Joonghyuk for over 3,000 chapters."

meanwhile, yjh has regressed over 1000 more times just to see kdj again (see the quote above).

be it enemies, friends, companions, lovers, their stories are for and made for each other. hence, why they try their hardest to save each other.

might i add, they are both considered to be black-white couples. they come in a pair, you van never separate them. these pictures made something snap inside of me and i needed to word vomit. companions that wish to either save or destroy each other, they somehow bring the best and worst in each other. all of that is the essence of doomed companions.

similar, if not the same, poses as seen in the pictures above. we have the readers on the same side and the person that wants to 'kill' them on the other same side; similar expressions, and last but definitely not least: heartbreaking stories.

if we add hsy + jing yuan to the mix, that's another set of depression.

And YJH her creation, whom she cruelly doomed on 1865 loops of torture and didn't regret it. He who fights for his right to be a human. He who was kind in the beginning, but was crushed by weight of responsibility and time. He who was made specifically for KDJ(to love).

I mean, parallels are ridiculous, but at the same time, they are completely different with their narrative? Would I love Carmen as much as KDJ if I saw everything happen from her perspective? Would I dislike HSY if we had more YJH povs? I am already like YJH way more after seeing his similarities with Angela. What if Carmen loved Angela as mush as KDJ loved YJH? What if Angela loved her back?

i just wanted to say that. i think your kdj comic broke something in me??? /pos as it reminded me a lot of my own experiences with dissociation/unreality and not being able to recognize myself and putting on layers upon layers of personas to the point of losing the person beneath and just. seeing how yjh and hsy pulled him out of it. reminded me a lot of how my best friend pulled me out of my own dissociative episodes. and that just. the realization that i dont have to do this alone anymore. kdj doesn't. and neither do i. that . just broke something and set it right at the same time. thank you so much for making this comic. and thank you so much for your art. its genuinely incredible and means so much to so many people. stay safe and stay hydrated!!!
