Mr. Bilous: Now, I appreciate members opposite are saying that we’re fearmongering. I’d like to think that what we’re doing is trying to provide caution to the government from what we’ve heard from the international community. You know what? If we’re wrong, and this doesn’t impact international investment and investment into Alberta, I’ll stand up and apologize, and I’ll say that I got it wrong.
Mr. Madu: I commend you for that.
Mr. Bilous: But here’s the problem. If we are right . . .
Mr. Madu: You won’t be right.
Mr. Bilous: The Deputy Premier keeps talking as if he is God or he has some kind of globe that can predict the future. Through you, Mr. Speaker, with all respect, you don’t know, and you haven’t conducted a risk matrix. If you have, table it.

An Alberta deputy premier says it was appropriate for his boss to phone a pastor and discuss his upcoming criminal trial on charges stemming from protests over pandemic restrictions. Kaycee Madu says Premier Danielle Smith has a broad mandate to reduce divisions over the COVID-19 pandemic while helping the province grow.
Madu says in pursuing that mission, under renewed criticism over a leaked phone conversation she had in January with the protester and Calgary street preacher Artur Pawlowski about his approaching trial.
During the call, Smith commiserates with Pawlowski over her government’s legal tactics and offers on his behalf while telling him the Crown’s charges are politically motivated. The phone call was leaked to the Opposition NDP and shared with reporters earlier this week.
Madu is a former Alberta justice minister who was moved out of the portfolio under former premier Jason Kenney after he was found to have tried to interfere in the justice system by calling Edmonton’s police chief to complain about a traffic ticket.
Madu was given a new portfolio under Kenney and became one of two deputy premiers when Smith won the party leadership and became premier in October.

One of Jason Kenney’s United Conservative Party candidates is not apologizing for promoting lawn signs made and distributed by Rebel Media.
Kaycee Madu, UCP candidate for Edmonton-South West, faced calls to apologize and disavow Rebel Media Sunday after he published photos of himself standing next to lawn signs emblazoned with Rebel Media’s logo while he was out door knocking over the weekend.
In a statement posted to his Facebook page, Madu described his encounter with the lawn sign as one of the biggest “highlights” of his day:
“One of the highlights of today’s door knocking was the ‘StopNotley.com’ lawn sign on the property of one of my constituents.”
The URL featured on the lawn sign directs visitors to a website promoting an e-book published under the name of Rebel Media contributor Sheila Gunn Reid.
In materials promoting the e-book, the far-right publisher declares “(Rachel) Notley hates our culture” and attacks her for speaking out against “xenophobia.”

Kaycee Madu: The travail of a trailblazer, By Charles Ihejirika
I’m somewhat relieved that he was not accused of corruption, fraud, or incompetence. I’m further consoled that he was not caught using government insider information to enrich himself or his siblings. I smile that he was not recorded on video with his hands in the cookie jar. I’m happy that he was not discovered to have altered his age, cooked the books, or doctored his educational credentials.…

Mr. Bilous: The irony in the fact that this government introduced the most undemocratic, dictatorial piece of legislation . . . [interjection] No. Please don’t “come on” me. No other government introduced a piece of legislation that allows them to unilaterally change any legislation, statutes, or regulations in the province behind closed doors. If that’s not undemocratic, I don’t know what it is. Well, other than introducing closure, but of course when they were opposition, then they cried, and now that they’re government, it’s okay.
An Hon. Member: You set the precedent.
Mr. Bilous: The irony of a member saying that we set the precedent. You’re right, because we’ve been government since 1920. Wait. No, we haven’t. No. That was Conservative governments who used closure for the last 75 years.
Mr. Madu: My party built this province. In four years you destroyed it.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has yet to answer direct questions about a growing scandal of her alleged interference with the justice system deputy premier has responded to the media about the issue.
Deputy Premier Kaycee Madu, Alberta's minister of skilled trades and professions, spoke at a media conference at an Edmonton-area sporting goods store on Thursday.
When asked about a recent story involving an online video recording of a phone call between Smith and Calgary pastor Artur Pawlowski – a man charged with incitement in connection with the Coutts border blockade Madu said he stands behind the premier "100 percent?"
"I know the media has always been interested in lies about this particular issue," he said. "I think what you saw happening was a media outlet is continuing their defamatory act against the premier of Alberta."
Madu says he's seen the video and insists it is "consistent with" Smith's feelings of concern for Albertans. During the YouTube clip, which was recorded on Jan. 26 but has since been made private by the channel's owner, Smith that she spoke with Crown prosecutors "almost weekly" about court cases involving COVID-related charges.
She also admitted that she had done so "ever since (she) got started" as premier. However, while Smith said she was "sorry" about Pawlowski's predicament, she also admitted that there "isn't a mechanism" for her, as U.S. leaders have, to influence prosecutors to drop the cases.
Madu said the premier has the right to speak with the minister of justice and her justice ministry about court proceedings but dodged questions about her direct inquiries with Crown prosecutors.
"So far, it is clear that all of justice. "That – for anyone who wants to look objectively at this particular issue – is the only conclusion you can come to."
Anyone who believes Smith spoke with prosecutors needs to pay more attention to some fundamentals of how Alberta's justice system works, Madu said. "Many of you in the media are aware of how our system is designed to work, but you are ignoring how the system is structured to work and are focusing on the word the premier referenced – 'prosecutors' and 'prosecution.'"
Madu previously held the post of justice minister before his interference with an Edmonton traffic ticket resulted in former premier Jason Kenney removing him.
While serving in that cabinet position, he was responsible for much of the legislation used against those who violated Alberta's public health rules during the COVID-19 pandemic, including the same violations Pawlowski is charged with.
When asked if he did his job correctly, Madu said he didn't want to "get involved in a debate" about pandemic restrictions. "Our province has returned to normalcy – our priority right now is to continue to make sure that we take care of our people (and) make sure our economy is growing.
"Our province has returned to normalcy – our priority right now is to continue to make sure that we take care of our people (and) make sure our economy is growing.
"The premier, in her COVID policies, was divisive for the people of Alberta. I see us past that particular era and focus on the people's priorities."
He said Smith's conversations were limited to her ministers "and anyone she chooses to speak with" and wants the media to drop the issue. "I think the time has come for us to move past this particular issue," he said.
Smith released a statement on Wednesday about the allegations but has not publicly appeared in front of the media to respond to questions. Rachel Notley, the leader of Alberta's NDP, is scheduled to speak about the issue on Thursday afternoon.

Alta. minister thanks convoys, says COVID-19 restrictions were 'about political control and power'
Kaycee Madu, Alberta's labour and immigration minister, sparked outrage Tuesday afternoon when he thanked "freedom convoys" for fighting "tyrannical" federal COVID-19 restrictions that will soon be lifted.
He went on to say that Ottawa's vaccination requirements for international travel were never about "science, but about political control and power."
The Alberta NDP has demanded that Premier Jason Kenney remove Madu from his cabinet. Kenney declined to comment on his minister's appreciation to convoy participants, telling reporters on Wednesday that he doesn't monitor Twitter and that "if you want to hear Minister Madu's views or clarification from him, I suggest you talk to him."
He did, however, agree with Madu on federal public health measures, claiming that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in December during consultations with premiers that the federal government needed "to be seen to be doing something."
For several weeks, convoy protesters flooded the streets of Ottawa and blocked international borders in Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario. Four men were arrested at the Alberta blockade in February and charged with murder conspiracy.
Madu was Alberta's justice minister until he was forced to take a "leave of absence" in January. During a COVID-19 update on May 5, 2021, he stated that Albertans must adhere to provincial restrictions.
CTV News Edmonton contacted the premier's office about Madu's remarks and requested an interview with him. Madu's latest comments are "inflammatory," according to a Calgary-based political scientist, who added that his remarks put the UCP government in a difficult position after imposing their own COVID-19 rules.
Kenney stated that "provincial measures are completely different because the provinces are in charge of the health-care system." Since being elected in Edmonton-South west in 2019, Madu has been a "lightning rod" for controversy, according to Bratt.
Madu apologized in May 2021 for saying the opposition NDP and federal Liberals, as well as the media, want the province's healthcare system to collapse due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
A retired judge found that Madu tried to "interfere in the administration of justice" over a distracted driving ticket in February. Kenney fired him as justice minister and immediately appointed him as labour and immigration minister.
According to political scientist Lori Williams, Madu's comments could hurt the UCP in other moderate Alberta ridings. Madu has publicly backed Danielle Smith in the ongoing UCP leadership election.

Three days after the Alberta election, the NDP candidate for one of the closest races, Edmonton-South West, conceded.
John Archer, who was hoping to win the seat for the NDP, confirmed to Global News Friday he spoke to UCP opponent Kaycee Madu.
In a message on Twitter, Madu wrote: “My NDP opponent has called me to congratulate me on winning the Edmonton-South West election. Thank you, everyone, for your kindness, your trust and your support. We have a lot of work to do.”
Edmonton-South West was one of five ridings that were too close to call Tuesday night.
