Retournons Ă la mer, retournons Ă lâĂ©tang, lĂ oĂč une entreprise prophĂ©tique nous a Promises. Par la concordance des cigales, et du ciel rouge qui sâappose sur ton front la taule, et le mal, et la peine que nous ignorions encore. Lâaccent rond, les : pain, main, hein, tarpin, pneu peneu pe neu mĂ©lodiques.
Retournons Ă la mer, en ton sein, puisque nous avons regardĂ© le mĂȘme film, dans la mĂȘme salle, sans le savoir, Ă quelques rangĂ©es, quelques siĂšges dâĂ©cart, tu Ă©tais trois rangs avant moi. puisque nous avons une expĂ©rience commune : ces plaies bĂ©antes, ces gencives saignantes, et ces cheveux gominĂ©s, ces accusations, ce venin anxiogĂšne, quâiels jetaient sur nous parce que nous Ă©tions noires.
La crainte de tâaimer, de poser encore sur toi, tes yeux, ta peau pĂ©gueuse Ă la DâAngelo, beaucoup trop huilĂ©e par la coco, un regard qui me trahirait.
Retournons Ă la mer, je ne pourrai que le rĂ©pĂ©ter, au fond de la cour, tu lâas si bien dit, il y avait les pins, tiens, les pins, la cour qui se tenait juste lĂ , en pente, le petit jardin clos oĂč lâon faisait pousser des fruits et des lĂ©gumes, lĂ oĂč seul.e.s les CE2 A/ B/ ou C avaient le droit dâaller.
Je pleurais de rire, dans ces innombrables épines de pins, parsemées sur le sol brûlant, je me souviens du regard flou, flouté par les feux de joie, les cages de foot et les zygomatiques tendues.
Je taclais les garçons au foot, mâasseyais dans le creux des ondulations du bitume/du ciment blanc anthracite et aucun dâeux ne mâaimait.
Retournons Ă la mer, je tâemmĂšnerai prĂšs de lâĂ©tang, l'odeur des Ćufs pourris de Berre nous frappe les narines entre deux pĂ©tards. Dans les sanglots, la solitude, et lâabandon, dâĂȘtre une femme noire dans une famille blanche, dâĂȘtre une femme noire qui aime les femmes câest prĂšs de lâĂ©tang que tu te rĂ©fugiais.
Une dizaine dâannĂ©es plus tard des ellipses parmi les vagues et les Ă©claboussures de la piscine de la mamie de Clara en juillet des bougies dâanniversaire numĂ©riquement trop trop nombreuses Ă souffler chaque annĂ©e.
Retournons Ă la mer, puisque jâai dit tout bas des signes, des choses inavouables.
Ils disent que « lâamour ça ne sâapprend pas », que « lâamour ça se vit » et pourtant jâaurais aimĂ© apprendre.
Moi, fille de Mars, qui nâai jamais appris que lâimpatience, le drame et le chaos Ă©levĂ© par le kayamb, son frĂšre tam tam, et les chants de guerre qui les accompagnent. Moi, fille de Mars, j'aurais voulu me sentir capable dâexprimer lâamour dans le calme, de sortir des sentiers tumultueux ancestraux de mâĂ©carter de la voie de la surveillance, de la mĂ©fiance, de la gangrĂšne routine, de CELUI OU CELLE QUI CRIERA LE PLUS FORT
Moi, fille de Mars, jâai cherchĂ© Ă tâatteindre et Ă te montrer la plaine verte qui sâĂ©tend Ă lâinfini, la vĂ©gĂ©tation et le colibri la profondeur et lâabondance de la riviĂšre en avançant mes lĂšvres, les extrĂ©mitĂ©s tendues et riches des mots Ă te donner, en plongeant la tĂȘte la premiĂšre dans le Gouffre des esprits Ă Terre Sainte, en serrant nos corps tandis que Les DĂ©esses chantaient notre histoire.

I wanna share something different but that is very personal to me here. I wonât go on about the details of my life, but I was adopted as child, and my adoptive father comes from Reunion Island, a French island in the Indian Ocean that was home to slaves brought from Mozambique and later to several different populations (mostly Chinese and Indian). Reunion has a very vibrant local culture, most notably a very typical cuisine between chinese, indian & crĂ©ole (grew up on that stuff itâs DELICIOUS), prominent music styles called sega and maloya (the latter being unique to the island)... and martial arts !!
RĂ©union has two prominent martial arts : La Croche, a form of folk wrestling that exists only on the island (and that is similar to most wrestling styles found around the world), and the subject of this video : Moringue. Moringue is incredibly similar to Capoeira, and some modern Moringue group actually linked it to Capoeira Angola, but itâs something completely unique to Reunion. Itâs half dance and half actual fighting, mostly with kicks, that look like an incredible crossover of usual front kicks / side kicks and acrobatic, capoeira-like kicks. Actual full contact competition exist, from the video it looks like the goal is to get your opponents out of bounds through kicks. Kicks are mostly used because, similarly to Capoeira, Reunionese slaves wore chains on their hands and had to use their legs to do anything. In this video (where people speak a mix of Reunionese creole and french), the guy sitting behind drums with his hair tied explains he is a scientist who is working on Moringue and its history, and mentions concepts like Afro-descendence, something relating to the common cultural heritage of former slaves that explains how places that are as remote as Brazil and Reunion end up having similar traditions. He mentions Moringue evolved from the original slaves, included Chinese and Hindu influence (probably kung fu and kalaripayattu, some of the kicks look A LOT like kalaripayattu) and later more European influences. Reunion moringue is done exclusively to the rhythm of maloya, the one typical musical style of Reunion, which participates to its unique character (Moringue has similar styles in Madagascar and the surrounding islands, but the Reunion one is unique). It is a fascinating art on so many aspects. Another testimony of African culture that was passed down from former slaves. My adoptive father was a maloya musician, playing a kayamb, that he had brought from his island and kept like one of his most treasured possessions. It sat on the walls of the house for years. Iâm estranged from him now but I can absolutely picture him playing to moringue and iâm pretty sure he did, and thatâs where his fascination for martial arts started.
The town I live now has a HUGE Reunionese population. Hell, three of my most regular musical collegues are Creole. I wonder if some of them brought Moringue to the mainland ? Iâm gonna look into this when I have time.

i rly want to get my hands on agricultural canna lily seeds. the common ones have been bred to increase the flower size and theyre very pretty, but the ones for eating have much larger tubers. canna lillies grow rly well in my area and, despite the name, are not related to actual lillies which are one of the most toxic plants to cats, so. no. actually theyâre much more closely related to ginger and banana than to real lillies
and bc i just cant summarize it, hereâs a list of uses from wikipedia:
âThe rhizomes of cannas are rich in starch, and have many uses in agriculture.
All of the plant material has commercial value, rhizomes for starch (consumption by humans and livestock), stems and foliage for animal fodder, young shoots as a vegetable, and young seeds as an addition to tortillas.
The seeds are used as beads in jewelry.
The seeds are used as the mobile elements of the kayamb, a musical instrument from RĂ©union, as well as the hosho, a gourd rattle from Zimbabwe, where the seeds are known as hota seeds.
In more remote regions of India, cannas are fermented to produce alcohol.
The plant yields a fibre from the stem, which is used as a jute substitute.
A fibre obtained from the leaves is used for making paper. The leaves are harvested in late summer after the plant has flowered, they are scraped to remove the outer skin, and are then soaked in water for two hours prior to cooking. The fibres are cooked for 24 hours with lye and then beaten in a blender. They make a light tan to brown paper.
A purple dye is obtained from the seed.
Cannas are used to extract many undesirable pollutants in a wetland environment as they have a high tolerance to contaminants.
In Vietnam, canna starch is used to make cellophane noodles known as miáșżn dong.
Cannas attract hummingbirds, so can be part of a pollinator and wildlife habitat strategy.â

Bon Voyage Organisation is above all the story of the construction of an ensemble, the quest for harmony, through music, between beings. A central leitmotiv in Adrien Durand's composition and production work for almost ten years.
Emancipated from all constraints and affirming the radical choice - previously initiated with La Course - of an entirely instrumental sound, (Loin des) Rivages was recorded over five days in June 2020 at Jean-Benoit Dunkel's Studio Atlas (Air) and mixed the following summer by Adrien Durand in his Parisian studio, Bureau 12. It was an orchestrated performance considering that all ten tracks were played live, gathering up to thirteen musicians in the same room. This close collaboration allowed Adrien Durand and the members of the ensemble to transcend themselves. Together, they deliver the incredible energy of Sentier des Orpailleurs (and Adrian Edeline's superb solo), the depth of melancholy of Apacheta (co-written and co-arranged by Adrien Durand and Gustave Rudman), and the originality of Et s'Ă©veillent... Inspired by the great explorers of the soul: Sun Ra, Moondog, Coltrane - a cover of his NaĂŻma actually opens the album - Adrien Durand mixes humanityâs first instruments (the percussions and the winds) with its latest ones (the mixing tables and the synthesizers). Thus, he continues the most interesting yet rewarding artistic journey: The journey inward, far from the standards of civilization, in the heart of what some can take for madness, reaching into a jungle of the soul so marvelously represented in ClĂ©ment Vuilletâs artwork. Pongo is back with new single âBRUXOSâ
Pongo returns with her first new music of 2021, single release âBRUXOSâ. Available now on Virgin Music, itâs the follow-up to the hotly-tipped Angolan-Portuguese artistâs 2020 EP UWA. Arriving ahead of a 15 date UK headline tour - kicking off at Londonâs EarthH on July 31, âBRUXOSâ is streaming now across all platforms.
BRUXOS - meaning sorcerer in Portuguese - refers to the belief that Pongo was confronted with when growing up in Angola, that jealous people would cast spells on those who succeeded. Pongo grew up with this idea stuck in her head, purposefully aiming not to succeed too much in whatever she undertook, for fear of being caught by the curses of these sorcerers, dissatisfied with their own lack of success. Today, she frees herself from these BRUXOS, and urges her audience to get rid of the constraints, even those self-imposed, that lead to doubt and taint success. âBRUXOSâ, this new ode to resilience in Pongo's signature style, resonates with everyone and will leave no one indifferent.
There was, around âBRUXOSâ, the desire to combine the dances dear to Pongo: Kuduro, Break, Malanje, dancehall, an improbable fusion of rhythms found in South and Central Africa, Reunionese instruments (Kayamb) and Caribbean grooves. The composers Dj Tony438, young French dancehall legend, and Lazy Flow, stemming from ballroom indie club culture and member of âHouse of LadurĂ©eâ, have made a wild anthem with the omnipresent concept of escapism at its core. Produced by King Doudou (Pnl, BadGyal, JBalvin), the vision was to incorporate flows from various global electronic music genres (dancehall, BaileFunk), while having a large majority of the elements played by fantastic instrumentalists in the studio, ensuring that the song would have the energy and feel of a live performance.

In 2018, Piers Faccini came up with the idea of releasing an EP vinyl series, in order to champion the kind of eclectic and talented artists the label meets and seeks out for their productions. The EP collection called, HEAR MY VOICE, began with distinct and original voices from around the world: the Neapolitan songwriter, GNUT, New Zealand songstress, TUi MAMAKI and the Trinidadian poet and singer, Roger Robinson under his Folk alias, HORSEDREAMER. In November 2019, for the fourth EP in the collection, wishing to highlight the series more, PIERS FACCINI decided to release one of his own.
Today, ORIANE LACAILLE, the French singer and percussionist whose origins are from the island of La RĂ©union, releases the fifth jewel in the series.
Hear My Voice Ep #5, like all the others in the series, was recorded and produced by Faccini in his studio in the CĂ©vennes in southern France.
The vinyl and digital release, #5 in the limited edition series, Hear My Voice, is out on Beating Drum on April the 15th.
About Oriane Lacaille:
Oriane Lacaille was born into an intensely musical family and growing up, her father RenĂ© Lacaille, one of the great musicians from the island of La RĂ©union, always made sure that music rang out from all corners of the house. Oriane defines herself as ZorĂ©ol, half creole and on her motherâs side, half metropolitan French. She began accompanying her father and touring all over the world from the age of 13, playing live from such an early age, the stage has long been as familiar as home to her. In her twenties, she formed the band Titi Zara and more recently Bonbon Voudou. Now in her early thirties, Hear My Voice ep is her first release under her own name and the perfect moment for her originality and skill as a singer songwriter in her own right, to be championed by Facciniâs eclectic independent label, Beating Drum. Oriane met Piers Faccini in 2019 in La RĂ©union for a tour with her father and cellist Vincent Segal. They connected straight away and on their return to the mainland, their friendship blossomed as they began collaborating. Oriane sending demos of her new songs, recording her voice with some bare percussion and a ukulele while multi instrumentalist Faccini proposed arrangements and compositional ideas. Having sent the demos back and forth to each other for several months, the next step saw Oriane come to Piersâs studio, together blending tradition RĂ©union percussion instruments like the Kayamb or Koulins with guembri, aouisha and guitars, lthey recorded, sang and played the four songs on the album.
