This is gorgeous, how does it sound?
I've just ordered my first steel tongue drum (aka hank/tank drum) - a BeatRise 13" 15 note... but a Kosmosky is already my dream goal drum (which is actually an idiophone). Maybe one day when they reduce the 35% import tax to the UK!
My newest instrument - a tank druml drum in D Harmonic Minor - by Kosmosky, all the way from Russia đ

Bone Bells
Maya, Mexico, Early Classic, 200-650 CE
The four bone objects represent a type of musical instrument that has been underrepresented in the literature for ancient Mesoamerica: bells. They fall within the group of musical instruments referred to as idiophones, or instruments that produce sounds from the material of the object itself by striking, shaking, rubbing, or scraping it. Other instruments in this group include gourd and ceramic rattles, bone rasps, and Oliva shell tinklers. The spheroid objects would likely have contained one or more pellets that would have rattled when shaken. The small perforations on the sides of each object suggest that they were strung; the larger opening was likely partly closed by a perishable glue or resin material to prevent the pellets from falling out. Alternatively, one or more clappers may have been suspended inside the hollow bone by a cord passing through the laterally drilled holes. Each of the four bells depicts a different supernatural head. One represents a water scroll, the serpent head of the patron deity of the number thirteen, who is also the Water Lily Serpent, the deity of standing water. Second and third bells depict the sun god and the Jaguar God of the Underworld, respectively. The last bell shows the head of a centipede. It is identified by the skeletal mandible and the prominent pair of long, sharp fangs that tip the upper jaw, as well as the out-curving, bifurcated tail, which is portrayed on top of the head.

People talking about autism: "neurodivergent this, neurospicy that"
Which is all and good but, I have a love-hate relationship with my brand of the spicy brain.
Yesterday I saw a random TikTok video that discussed how Mahler's Ninth symphony was not merely just of "death" but is quite decidedly "of dying". The video was showcasing how the audience was amazingly able to keep the last 6 minutes of controlled silence in the 9th's finale without any noise, no clapping, nothing.
The video then talked about how Mahler's Ninth is the greatest representation of the process of dying, and how the last two pages of the score runs for nearly 6 minutes despite the scarcity of notes, with the last note marked as "passing away", this last section being just an extended act of disintegration of life. The whole orchestra holding the music as long as they can, clinging on to the silence until its inevitable end.
And so upon reading that description my coffee-addled brain said, hey that sounds like The Locked Tomb series and all the characters from the Ninth House! Music and Necromancy goes brrr! And they're both NINTH so surely there must be some connection there! I must investigate this seemingly irrelevant, unconnected thing about two of my special interest!
Fast forward to now and I've spent the entire night reading countless articles, analyses, and blogposts about Mahler, I've halfway finished about three dissertations on his music, I've pirated a couple books and biographies, learned of leitmotifs, "birds", LeitklÀnge, and idiophonic sound symbols, and I've listened to all 90 glorious minutes of the Ninth quite repeatedly.
Which is to say, I'm definitely in over my head because the level of analysis Brain wants requires years and years of music theory that I simply do not possess, but stubborn Brain says it must be done no matter what. After a whole day of staring at musical notes and listening to literary words, one thing I can decidedly opine about is that there are parallels between the whole Locked Tomb series and the four structural movements of Mahler's Ninth:
I. Andante comodo (D major) - Gideon the Ninth II. Im Tempo eines gemĂ€chlichen LĂ€ndlers. Etwas tĂ€ppisch und sehr derb (C major) - Harrow the Ninth III. Rondo-Burleske: Allegro assai. Sehr trotzig (A minor) - Nona the Ninth IV. Adagio. Sehr langsam und noch zurĂŒckhaltend (Dâ major) - Alecto the Ninth, once it gets published
I have yet to form a deeper impression on all this but, I just find it funny how indeed, the movements somewhat represent the titular characters and their experiences, based on the titles alone. Andante comodo - comfortably at a moderate tempo. (If that doesn't scream GIDEON I don't know what does lol) Im Tempo eines gemÀchlichen LÀndlers. Etwas tÀppisch und sehr derb - At the pace of a leisurely LÀndler. A bit clumsy and very rough (our Lady Harrowhark, post-lobotomy, bleeding ears and all).
Admittedly, I haven't finished Nona, and we're still collectively suffering Alectopause, but movements III and IV are Rondo-Burleske: Allegro assai. Sehr trotzig - Very cheerful, very defiant; and Adagio. Sehr langsam und noch zurĂŒckhaltend - very slow and still reserved. Do with that information what you will. (I'm still betting it'll ring quite true for Alecto once it's out).
So there. This is currently eating at my neurons. The next few days or weeks will have no music save the Ninth, or until this particular itch gets scratched/gets replaced. Faaaaak. I truly envy neurotypicals who do not suffer these kinds of sudden obsessions. How quiet must your brains be. đ„Ž

Strawhatsâ Band AU
- The Strawhatsâ sound is akin to Beirut and Broken Social Scene.
Band Members and Instruments:
- Usopp: Bass guitar. (Engineer and Songwriter/Lyricist)
- Luffy: Lead singer.
- Nami: Keyboardist/pianist/synth player.
- Zoro: Drummer.
- Sanji: Trombonist. (Might play other hard-a** brass instruments). (Lyricist/SW)
- Chopper: Maracas, Tamborine, and instruments similar to those. (He can play the Kalimba and idiophone type).
- Robin: Harp. (Can play the Theremin too).
- Franky: Electric guitar. (Engineer)
- Jinbe: Percussion line.
- Brook: Violinist. (Composer)
Nami: Keyboard/piano prodigy exploited by corrupt talent scout Arlong. She tried to sue him for damages after her adopted mom passed away. She had a breakdown but returned to music with Luffyâs help.
Zoro: Dedicated and talented drummer with a slight drinking problem. His playing style is swift, intense, and controlled. Learned to play in the same style as a late friend.
Sanji: Talented trombonist who left a philharmonic orchestra due to politics and personal reasons.
Luffy: Former member of the marine band, sent there by his grandpa after attending military/marine school but managed to escape.
Usopp: Music college dropout who is haunted by his famous father, whom he never knew. His girlfriend passed away from cancer. He had posted YouTube covers and gained a following. His late mother was an indie artist who never achieved widespread success. It is uncertain whether she was a groupie.
(all EB5 were homeless or broke at one point before meeting).
Both Robin and Nami have had experiences similar to Kesha, involving exploitation in the music industry.
Usoppâs dad, Yasopp or âChaserâ, is a famous bassist, ranked as one of the best of all time by Rolling Stone.
Shanks or âRed Hairâ is Luffyâs mentor. He is the famous lead singer of a Grammy award-winning band.
Red Hair Pirates - They are a famous Grammy award-winning band with a sound similar to War, King Harvest, Dire Straits, and Guns Nâ Roses, depending on the era.
Usopp and the band have a falling out when they alter their sound and remove a fan-favorite song, "Merry," from the setlist.
Usopp leaves the band after a public feud with Franky and Luffyâs decision to remove "Merry" from the Water 7 music festival setlist, which is akin to Coachella or Lollapalooza.
Sabaody Groove Fest: This festival is similar to the controversial Warped Tour, with various allegations surrounding it.
Usopp modified Namiâs keyboard to have unique synth sounds, similar to the Climatact.
âMerryâ was believed to be an ex of Usoppâs, but itâs revealed that the song personifies the bandâs journey and dream towards success. The band is surprised by this revelation.
- Franky writes a successful song called âSunnyâ that charts well, but fans believe "Merry" will become a classic.
Each bandmate will receive honorifics and titles in their 40s or 50s. Usopp will be ranked #1 or #2 on the best rock bassists of all time list, surpassing his dad.
Usopp also creates a musical collective with other Black artists, developing a following of 8,000+ fans.
The bandâs (Strawhats) fandom name is Nakama or Sailors
- When not singing, Luffy plays the cymbals, fooling around when heâs not leading the vocals.
- Usopp returns at the Water 7 festival as Sogeking, playing a crucial bass solo riff, symbolizing his readiness to rejoin the band. Luffy pulls him on stage to finish the song with a cool bass riff.
The Strawhats might decide to make a political statement during a performance, similar to when Luffy told Usopp to shoot the flag in the show. This could involve revealing an anti-government poster or banner, which could then go viral. Alternatively, they might do something in support of Robin, who is in a dispute with her former record label.
I have a dirty little secret. I wrote a song about Merry to accompany the fic idea. Itâs a little cringe but I recorded it and everything. I might share it one day. Lol!
This is what I mean by the bandâs soundâŠ
Theyâd pull something like this in public.
youtube
BSS lyrics are pretty raw and bombastic in a way I feel like the SHs would be.
youtube
Music video is basically about pirates (???) and it reminds me of one of Luffyâs moves.

Daily Instrument â ÄĂ n ÄĂĄ
The ÄĂ n ÄĂĄ, or ÄĂ n goong is a Vietnamese lithophone (idiophone made of rock) and literally called ârock instrumentâ or ârock gongâ. The instrument is ancient, played between 4,000 and 10,000 years ago, however is still played. The ÄĂ n ÄĂĄ is made of eleven differently sized stones that are shaped to a certain pitch and lined up in a row. The player uses wooden mallets to strike the stones.

Release date unknown.
Tamboo bamboo is a Trinidadian percussion instrument (idiophone) created in Trinidad BWI , and is a notable precursor to the creation of steelpan. Its name derives from the French word for drum (tambour) and the material from which the instrument is predominantly made from. It is still played by carnival-goers in Trinidad today, although it was the dominant instrument at carnival at the turn of the twentieth century.

hey i love love ypur art and your ocs so much theyâre all so cute and i followed ur project from your twitter days, and i follow their spotify playlists! i am their boggest fan haha.. can you tell a little bit more about the worldbuilding your characters lice in, cause i remember you talking about their world surrounding different music concepts?
again i love your ocs and i cannot wait to see how your project grows to be!!
(SORRY THIS TOOK SO LONG I WAS TRYING TO MAKE THIS COMPREHENSIBLE⊠đ)
OMG iâm glad you've followed me and my ocs this far ;;
i can't share a lot about them since i'm still working on them, but iâll share what i have so far. keep in mind that the information might change
all of my characters are from sona, a music-based planet. there are a total of 7 subspecies of sonancians, and they're named after the music modes and are also based off of musical instruments
IONIANS
ionians of iona are the vocal-based sonancians. not only are they known for their singing, but they are also good at mimicking voices and other sounds, echolocation, and their keen listening (thanks to their big ears)
there are two types of ionians, and thatâs:
land ionians,
live in caverns, coves, beaches, rainforests- generally tropical/wet climates
very social
cannot survive in water
and sea-ionians
live in bodies of water, like oceans, lakes, etc
a bit less social
used to be unable to survive outside of water, but now can in modern day
are more likely to have âair asthmaâ; carries around water inhaler
they are considered âchildren of sirensâ because they easily lure other types of sonancians with their beautiful voices- like the siren animal thatâs native to iona
contrary to common myths about sirens, most of them don't lure people in bad faith. they are soothsayers that predict events depending on what sirens sing. they and ionians get bad rep due to other sonancians believing that they CAUSE bad happenings, when in reality the sirens just foresee the future
dym (left) is a sea-ionian and a soprano. diaâs (right) a land-ionian and a contralto (and those are pretty rare!!)
random facts:
ionians like shiny stuff like jewelry. this is because they believe that it can extend their lifespan
they have a lot of medicines, but a common one that they're known for is the ones that help with healing voices
DORIANS
next up are dorians of doro! dorians are the dancers of sonancians, and are known for introducing makeup, masks, and sign language, as they use them to make their dances more interesting. dorians are within the top 3 strongest sonancians since their strength comes from dancing, but they are very protective about their beauty, so they try not to beat people up lol
iâm working on their culture at the moment, but if there was a way to describe it- their culture is full of celebrations/holidays, and festivales
mai is one of the few types of dorian. not exactly sure what type yet, but just know she is idol + gyaru themed and does not wear masks, more of just makeup
random facts:
dorians gift others face masks or any piece of their dancing outfit to show that they love them, platonically or romantically
dorians are more likely to have dancing stims that are uncontrollable. itâs very acceptable to them but to other sonancians it might be odd unfortunately
they do not eat meat!
PHRYGIANS
phrygians of phrygia are the percussion-based type of sonancians! the membranophone type of phrygians especially are within the top 3 strongest sonancians. i don't have their culture down yet, but just know that they have a lot of pride in themselves for their strength, bravery, and stubbornness. they live in hotter climates, like deserts, and HATE being in cold ones. they also like spicy foods!
rocky (left) is a membranophone type phrygian and kodus (right) is an idiophone type phrygian. both are cousins btw. fun fact, rocky, despite being fire-themed, does NOT like some spicy foods, and prefers salty/savory ones. they only eat extremely spicy stuff when they're stressed out though
random facts:
some phrygians break their horns intentionally and wrap them with colored bandages. they are seen as delinquents
they wear piercings and tattoos for competitions they've won in sports, groups they are apart of, and close ones theyâve lost
idiophones have these long tails that are similar to rattlesnakes. it usually rattles in different speeds and rhythms depending on how they feel. rocky used to have this but i've changed it since they're not an idiophone
membranophones shed their skin like lizards
LYDIANS
lydians are string-based and are known to be the tallest type of sonancians- and also the most gentle. lydians are primarily known for their fast growing hair; they also use said hair as strings for their instruments. in modern times, some lydians use serums meant to stop hair growth because of how tedious it is to take care of long hair
random facts:
has whiskers, like cats
lives in the forest, inside trees
some lydians have wings! they're kinda like bugs
lydians do not have fingers, but they can still do stuff like strumming instruments. i don't know how to explain this logic
can have multiple eyes and arms
does not have ears or noses
known for their fantastic agriculture and rare, tasty delicacies
like dorians, they do not eat meat. their diet consists of mostly fruit, but they also have vegetables too
soun (left) is half lydian (guitar type lydian but without the tall height lol). octavia (right) is a cello type lydian- one of the tallest type of lydian- and is 8â8
AEOLIANS
this one is personally one of my favorites. aeolians are woodwind sonancians that mostly live on the clouds of aeolys, but some can live in colder climates, too. they have thick wool, like sheep, to keep themselves warm. because of this, they do not want to be in hotter climates.
you're probably wondering- charee, if aeolians live on clouds, how do they travel from the ground to their homes if they don't have wings? well, aeolians can fly using their horns, made out of special âwindwoodâ. they can also control the weather with those horns as well. think of it as like unicorns- but they don't make things appear or any magical stuff. there are fairytales and myths surrounding the theory of their horns being able to make magic happen though!
fantayzaâs some type of aeolian. i think an ocarina, or a panflute
random facts:
aeolians have fluffy eyelashes
in aeolys, time passes by faster
their eyes and horn glow depending on their mood
LOCRIANS
this is also one of my favorites and probably the type of sonancian i would be if i were one
locrians are the brass type of sonancians, where their horns and nails are made out of brass and they make honking sounds. they are in the top 3 strongest sonancians from mining a lot, and are pretty stubborn, like phrygians. they are also known to craft things out of gems, stones, crystals etc, as locri is rich in those types of materials. cool thing about them is they live underground, and their home looks medieval themed
random facts:
their bodies are very flexible. they can extend, twist and turn, and stretch themselves out, inspired by how tubas and stuff look. it almost feels like they don't have bones at all
ionians have a good relationship with locrians for their materials
this is an outdated design; gio is some type of locrian. i have no clue yet but i'm thinking bugle horn right now
MIXOLYDIANS
mixolydians are powered by energy; they're constantly around light and don't necessarily sleep unless there isn't enough light. they're kinda like moths with lights. mixolydians cannot touch water, and produce tears and saliva because it can cause excruciating pain for them. if you're a mix of a mixolydian, the pain is minimal⊠but you do get hungry easily
speaking of appetite- mixolydians cannot eat regular food. they only eat digital foods converted from energy, so like photosynthesis. as far as the overtourism is concerned, that's the only big âissueâ that drives people away. and to be honest, that's great news because⊠they need to stay away đïžđïžđïžđïžđïž
random facts:
when they cry, they glitch
they can change colors on command. usually used to indicate moods or for camouflaging
their voices are naturally autotuned
their tails have stingers, and it can go from minimal pain to LOTS of pain, depending on their mood. don't anger them
Z (pictured above) is a full mixolydian, and soun is half. as i mentioned before, soun gets the guitar part from lydians, so the other half of him is a sampler. overall, he's electric guitar themed! Z is just synthesizer themed
i hope that explains what i have so far! if you have any other questions about sonancians (or my ocs in general), just ask me :] i might not have the right answers rn or can't share too much info but i'll answer regardless hehe

A starry night sky
A sparkly night sky and a crescent moon above me. Closing my eyes, taking in the atmosphere - I fall deeper and deeper into my sense of self. The ringing symphonies hum between my ears. I relax my face and begin to dream.
There is a snake, myself and a glowing figure (is it a representation of me?). We are in an ocean of greenery, and the trees grow monstrously tall. Another instrument rings, possibly a Triangle Idiophone. It guides me forward in this impossible world. My body in real world twitches, maybe itâs the cold room I'm in.
I continue to dream, now Iâm in space. Being carried by a sea of stars. And there is something hugging me, a man with dark hair envelops me. Who is this man? He makes me feel safe. And warm. He releases me and I continue to float. Other imagery rotates through my mind, visually. Each one more deeper and intimate than the past one.
The Sound Bath comes to an end. I thank the hosts and take my leave. There are cocktails available, but Iâm loving the high that I feel right now.
I walk towards the bus station to make my way home, not entirely sure of where I am or where Iâm going. But Iâm exactly where I need to be, I look up and see those same stars again. And deep feeling of purpose washes over me. I often question myself, my choices, my being. But in that moment I realised that everything that I have done, has aligned me more and more with where I want to be. There are no right or wrong decisions (well, technically there is but for now we will pretend that there isn't) I can only make an educated decisions on what will put me in the correct direction. Based on my lived experiences and thatâs all that I need I think.
This year I have made a conscious decision to put myself out there, and try different things. That includes trying things like: pole dancing, interrailing, meeting new people, spontaneous concert trips, paragliding and other things of that nature. Part of me does feel that I am still chasing a certain euphoria that I once felt, but with every decision I make, I'm one step closer to reaching that same feeling. And I hope that when I do - I can make it last forever.
---------
Thank you for reading!
Love,
MOSHA XOXO

Time for the second installment to the Usami mini-takeover! It's what I'm going to start calling a Fantsy Cover! The point of these covers is to replace an older kind of cover I used to make, Idiophonic only covers. Now I'm using mostly idiophones plus some other instruments here and there to get a "sounds like a fairytale" vibe with these new covers. I think I hit the nail on the head here! Sounds even better than expected!

Review of "The Singing Saw at Christmastime" in the Tampa Tribune, 28 November 2008
transcript:
JULIAN KOSTER: THE SINGING SAW AT CHRISTMASTIME (MERGE) Former Tampa scenester and incurable musical iconoclast Julian Koster serves up a dozen choice, um, cuts on this seasonal showcase for the humble titular idiophone. The track list sticks to familiar classics, each given a spare arrangement that sounds like a gentle wind whistling through bare winter branches. Itâs ethereal, at times haunting, and guaranteed to sound like nothing else in your holiday music collection. (RJ) Download this: âHark! The Herald Angels Singâ
