i watch a lot of youtube because i do not like having nothing on in the background lest i consume myself with my own thoughts. one of my most watched genres is fashion youtube. i've been watching fashion youtube since highschool, back in 2016-2017. and from watching all those yearly trends, thrift flips, and hauls, i've come to the conclusion that if i ever want to do youtube, i would not start until ive got a dayjob and like... robust self-esteem. age 27 AT LEAST.

so let me take you through my thought process. the queen of fashion youtube at the time was Ashley bestdressed. she did thrift hauls, thrift flips, outift inspos, the whole shebang. i think she was college - fresh graduate age when her channel was at peak popularity? and in 2020 she just dipped. disappeared. she makes content for ig only now and is working for many major fashion houses (good for her!). she vanished for a variety of reasons, in her videos she has always talked about her mental health struggles, having a stalker so she had to move a couple times during covid nonetheless, and honestly having the worst fanbase. i was on bestdressed reddit and discord at the time, these fans were horrible.

now, the most popular girlies on fashion youtube are kathleen illustrated, beepworld, mina le, and steal the spotlight (although im sorry to say in numbers not doing nearly as well as ashley; give em a watch if you're into fashion!). many of them started around the same time citing Ashley as a big influence. here i want to compare these creators to Ashley, not to incite hate but to understand what makes a healthy and sustainable content creator career.

I think age and career are a big factor because although social media content creation is usually a young man's job (because young people can keep up with trends and what not), the social part of social media is grueling. the horror of being known times like. a million. in ashley's case she had 3 million subscribers. and when you're around 21-25 ish you are the most insecure you will ever be. at least for me, i hope (im 22 now). so not only was ashley most likely struggling (she was very open about it, she made a lot of self deprecating jokes) but her biggest demographic was people her age who's insecurities were probably fueled by her content. like i will stress, im NOT blaming ashley, but like. 20 year olds watching another 20 yr old live her best life? oh my god the jealousy. the insecurity. it didn't help that she was so relatable and humble about it, i think we get more jealous of other people's success the closer they are to us (why i dont look at my personal instagram anymore lol). badabing badaboom parasocial relationship and 3 million people watching your every move and critiquing every bit of it. her fanbase had THE most baseless critiques. disguising her rich background or whatever, hating on her for being privileged (which she recognized a lot btw), literally going incel mode and making comments about every inch of her body, the only critique that holds up is prob the amazon video which she deleted. also she was not white which i think people were very weird about. i cant deny that her white contemporaries got much less hate.

what works with the creators now is some of them have careers outside of youtube and are also less personal with their content. for example, kathleen illustrated has a career in the creative industry which means she mostly does youtube for fun. you can tell it's not a source of stress for her, from the way she is in her videos. they also don't really talk about their lives in a personable way which separates them from their audience. now i know this point in particular in contentious, authenticity and relatability are huge selling points on youtube. but i guess it's more of analyzing the costs and benefits of it? is it worth to put your whole life out there? showing your boyfriend, your girlfriend, your friends? what if you split up? you can have a personable aura without revealing private details. in mina le's videos, since most of them are video essays she has the opportunity to show off her personality without revealing private details.

i hope the creators i mentioned and others don't have to go through what ashley bestdressed has gone through. i know content creation is a very passion filled career and to end up in circumstances where you lose your love for it sounds awful

Morgan is a kind soul with a desire to heal anyone who is in any kind of pain.            BACKSTORY

Morgan Rowlands was born on November 23rd, to Maeve Riordan and Ciaran MacEwan. Though her mother's partner Angus Bramson believed he was her father, a belief Maeve did not correct. Fearing attack by Ciaran, Maeve and Angus gave her up for adoption when she was around 8 months old. Soon after, Ciaran killed them by locking them up in a building and setting it on fire.

She then was adopted by Mary Grace and Sean Rowlands. two years later, her parents had a biological daughter named Mary Kathleen Rowlands. When Morgan was 8, her parents nicknamed her Molly, after they learned of the death of her biological mother and presumed father. Though the Rowlands did not fully understand the exact circumstances of Maeve and Angus's death, they were aware that real magick was somehow involved, and they hoped the nickname would deflect anyone who wished her harm

Morgan lived in Widow's Vale, New York and was a high-school junior when she was introduced to Wicca by Cal Blaire (the new boy in town). The two developed an emotional relationship which only grew stronger when Morgan discovered her heritage, powers, and family origins.

It wasn't long until a Seeker from the International Council of Witches showed up in Widow's Vale to stop Cal and his mother, Selene Belltower, from performing dark magick. Hey! I looked up the Jenny Slate quote from your recent fic and then ended up buying her book lol and now I'm really enjoying it! So, thanks for the rec! Have you read it and if so has it inspired any of your other writing/ideas?

Omg yay! I'm so glad you picked this book up, it's seriously one of my favorites. My copy is so marked up, it's insane. I read it at the start of the year and it had such a massive impact on me. I think because the book settled so deeply in my soul that it definitely has influenced my writing in some ways but that quote I believe is the only one that particularly inspired a fic.

However! I have a lot of quotes marked "inspo" in the essay I Died: Bronze Tree, so eventually I think those will find their way into some fics.

Like there's the quote: "There was no other time when I'd shopped for groceries and bought grape jelly, which only you like, and brought it home just to realize the horror of what I'd done, buying purple jelly for a person who is not here."

And: "There was never a time when we went away from each other and kept living somewhere else. I died and there were times when I had been furious at you, when I had leveled sheets of insults at you, prodded at your identity, been bored, felt abandoned, been mad about your unwashed socks and your problems with authority but I lived through it all and I dug deep, I didn't give up, and because I held on, I lived through countless pleasures and beauties with you and your brilliant mind, and we did as much as we could and then you died and then soon after that, I died too."

But also I think that the love expressed in this quote (from Geranium) kind of exists in how Yoongi loves Kid in light of the faults she sees in herself:

I want to love you (more than I love you)

I was pretty sure I was the ideal audience for The Lost City. And - TLDR - I did really enjoy it the first time I saw it but have struggled to get through it on the second time of viewing, a year later. (WHY?)

Still loved the opening though - the setting and the scrubbing out.

First - why am I the ideal audience?

Do I love Romancing the Stone? Back in the day, wholeheartedly. These days? Probably, definitely, undeniably not ALL of it. Hasn't ALL aged very well, has it? But Kathleen Turner's Joan Wilder and the journey/s she goes on, particularly the emotional one? YES PLEASE.

Sandra Bullock is Loretta Sage who is a sort of Joan Wilder for the 2020s. Both are super successful romance novelists, but LS leans academic and tough, plus also - grieving - whereas JW is ALL Mills and Boon, soft, longing for love, cat-lady-in-training material. Both end up on a treasure quest because someone took their books a bit too seriously (although, sometimes having your books taken seriously can be a good thing, per this lovely clip via YouTube, below).

Do I love Lara Croft? Not as much as I feel I should. Shout-out to Brad Pitt's character cameo (I think it's a cameo?) as a guy who surely would be at home in either of those movies IMO.

Do I love Indiana Jones? Is the Pope a major figure in the Roman Catholic church? Does Indy have a fraught relationship with snakes?

See - makes sense of the snakes, right (and I can 100% imagine the writers being like FINALLY I have chance to question the snake logic!)

Big shout-out to Daniel Radcliffe who for me was the absolute and slightly unexpected highlight of this movie, especially on the second run at it, and who could have credibly villained up in any of the previously mentioned flicks, or, another obvious inspo - James Bond.

Closer to home - am I a big fan of Sandra Bullock?

Yes, really am, and I think my favourite of her movies remains 1995's While You Were Sleeping though I accept that the dumb McGuffin that gets the plot going is now considered ethically ICK (and, it was never, as such, a move we were supposed to approve of?)

But come on - is this guy... leaning? Still (to me) adorable.

BTW had absolutely not realised how Proto-Sopranos the landlord guy is (can't remember - is that his role/relationship to the SB character? - can't quite summon the energy to go and find out). And, indeed, having looked up the actor, he was considered for Tony Soprano when that series was created a few years later (greenlit 1997 and on screens from, I think, 1999) and played a small role in S1.

I did really enjoy the Channing Tatum character, though he was playing, of course, a zillion times softer than in my current favourite of his movies. No, not Magic Mike. Not even Step Up* (which I liked).

[*There's a moment later on in The Lost City where they dance and - wow - it's really something to see someone on screen who can REALLY move. SB perhaps not so much, but CT? Fluid to the max.]

For reasons that probably speak to some personality deficiency or psychosis, my fave CT movie is 2013's White House Down, naturally:

So - the issue? The out-of-water environment was GREAT. The constant references to ridiculous treasure hunt / action adventure movies also really worked for me. I think big picture the movie stands or falls on how much the viewer can believe there's a soft, worthwhile person under the surface of SB's dismissive, superior veneer and whether it's fun to watch Person In Position of Power Being Mean to Lovely Softer Person Who For No Obvious Reason Adores Them.

Turns out that I can go with that only once.

Perhaps 1st time through I'm expecting the Mean Person to get over themselves faster. On a second viewing, my patience is lower and I want her to behave better, faster. No, I don't think that being scared of moving on or commitment or fresh heartbreak is a good excuse.

It's also a close revival of The Proposal - except that CT is all sweetness, no snark while RR is always at least a little bit of a blend.

I enjoyed The Proposal - but I didn't entirely enjoy it. (And again, there's some secondary material that hopefully wouldn't make the cut if it was being made now and that would be frankly unregretted.)

PS Thought RR's snark was on point with his birthday message to SB last year - how very on brand to reshare this Gorgeous Bodies image while simultaneously joking about how industry standards have changed AND, I think, by doing this publicly, jokily, reaffirming the idea that this was one of the movies With Nothing To Hide.

HAHAHAHAHA okay so for like a solid minute after I saw this ask I was like, how does Skye know about this? Has she hacked into my google docs? Is she a witch?? Cause I’m almost certain I have not said anything about this idea to anyone??? But then I remembered I tagged this gif set with an inspo tag recently. 😂

I am…thinking about writing an Ezra fic. I have not written a word of it, but I have been letting the idea marinate for a few weeks. I actually have a lengthy post drafted that offers a look into all my WIPs to post after SAMG is complete, but I will let the cat out of the bag now about this idea because the more I think on it the more excited I get!

It’s an AU based on Romancing the Stone (hence the “RTS” in the RTS!inspo tag), which is one of my favorite movies of all time. My love of this film knows no bounds. It is a perfect blend of action-adventure, romance, comedy, and 1980s smooth jazz saxophone. Michael Douglas is at his peak levels of hotness, Kathleen Turner is a shy, sheltered hopelessly romantic but mega-successful romance novelist, and Danny DeVito is Danny DeVito (his they’re mobilizin’ for Iwo Jima here! scene is one of my favorite bits in any movie).

I’ve wanted to write a RTS AU for a long time, I just haven’t figured out the right specific fandom or character for it until now. Not sure if it will be x reader or x OFC, but consider (assuming you’re familiar with RTS, and if you aren’t, please watch it omg) the Ezra/Prospect similarities: a dangerous loner of questionable morals and trustworthiness rescues/teams up with a woman and goes on a trek through a perilous jungle full of enemies in search of a jewel worth a fortune that many are willing to kill for???

But like I said, it’s still just in the idea phase for the time being. I’ve also never tried to write Ezra before, so I dunno how easy or not I’ll find trying to capture his very distinct voice, but we’ll see!
