Call OG Star Trek corny all you want. Because yeah. But it's also like-
Tumblr media
"Here is a rock slug. It is literally different from Earth life on the molecular level. It is killing people. It's obviously played by a stagehand wearing a rug. Except it's not an it. It's a she. She's a mother, and she's lived here far longer than man has lived on her native planet. She lives alone with eggs that haven't hatched, which the miners thing are just worthless rocks. Her mission is one of love as well as vengeance. She feels anger and pain and joy. She doesn't have a voice but she can be felt. Through understanding her, both her species and mankind can benefit. Through understanding, we can achieve peace."

🩷💛 Kathleen (9), the middle sister of the triplets and the eleventh among the sisters. They are the couple's biological daughters who were born after they had given up hope of having children, a year after they had adopted the girls from the orphanage (It was a pleasant surprise!). Kathleen loves to paint and make illustrations, she makes a lot of mess and always ends up with a bit of paint in her hair or on her clothes.

Barbie and the 12 Dancing Princess Modern!AU 🩷💃🏾 In this AU, most of them were adopted by the owners of the kingdom's ballet school after the orphanage they were in closed down. (As a reference for the drawings, I mixed elements from the film with the line of dolls 😉)

When we wrote the show bible, [...] right there on the front page, we said, “this is a love story, and that’s not good”. [...] Throughout our series, we will continue to come back to the notion that love conquers all, and that’s problematic.

One of the reasons Kathleen is so terrifying is that her “kids die, it’s just fate” speech is such an anti-vaxxer Christian determinism point of view and we all know people like that who hide behind the “nice midwestern lady” mask. Especially when directed at a black child whose family couldn’t afford medical treatment.

Joseph, Kathleen, Daniel and Hazel
Basically a happy (or seemingly happy) family
The parents' names are taken from @zerachielamora 's headcanon, I couldn't imagine better names

Sometimes I rotate the fact on Star Trek they'll use "whole galaxy" instead of "whole universe". Like, all the weird shit they encounter once a week is within the confines of the Milky Way. And there's still stuff in Andromeda and beyond that's yet to be discovered. So there's always a sense of things to find still out there. They just lack the technology to go far enough to discover them.
I love how the Milky Way just holds the entire Q Continuum. And an alien/energy presence who takes the appearance of a grown ass adult but is really a baby. And Greek gods. And also my beloved horta. And also planets with civilizations thousands of years old, already with ruins which they don't allow outsiders to access. And civilizations on the cusp of warp travel, ready to receive a visit from funny aliens in colorful t-shirts beamed down from a silver disk in the sky. And in the dark distance? Borg Cubes.
Did I mention this is all within our own galaxy according to Star Trek lore? I'm gonna do it again because I think it's cool.

do any of the female characters do any kind of textile crafts? i vaguely remember learning that spinning yarn was something learned very young in ireland and i was wondering if that was true for any of your ocs
- @iron--and--blood
Given that they make basically all of their clothes at home, yes, most of them do! both with wool and, because they live in ulster, many of them are also involved in the linen trade, at least to the extent that they vaguely know how to weave and grow flax as one of their major crops. mostly this stays in the background of the stories because um. linen is unforch only exciting to me. but the linen market has shaped the sociopolitical reality the characters live in and some of them have it as their main occupation -- Maguire is a weaver, as is Donal, at least ostensibly. and ofc some of the characters have killed over linen because the armagh troubles of the 1780s on were in many ways predicated on the issue of protestant weavers and catholic weavers wanting each other's livelihoods, after being driven together by the linen market meaning that it was possible for protestants to move out to the less fertile land traditionally only occupied by catholics and still support themselves by weaving, thus bringing the two groups into close quarters and conflict. so while most of the characters don't show an exceptional interest in textile crafts beyond it being another chore, it has impacted their lives in some incredibly significant ways.
Anyway to actually answer your question yes <3 Mary spins yarn in the evenings when she has time and then knits her own shawls, as well as many gifts for baptisms, weddings, to take to the sick, etc. She likes to have the finished product she can give to someone or wear. Aoife enjoys weaving complex blankets more because it engages her than because she gets a blanket at the end, and the shawl she always wears was a gift from her mother (which her mother made), probably as a peace offering after another screaming argument. Kathleen doesn't really have any interest in textile crafts and forces her younger sisters to do most of the necessary work so she basically doesn't do any andddd Máire didn't like weaving OR knitting but did the latter anyway because it's something women™️ are meant to do and then she was imprisoned in a workhouse where they make her do this kind of thing all day every day regardless of her enjoyment of it. so.
