Improbable Magic for Cynical Witches || Kate Scelsa || 320 pages Top 3 Genres: Fantasy / Young Adult / Romance
Synopsis: Seventeen-year-old Eleanor is the least likely person in Salem to believe in witchcraft—or think that her life could be transformed by mysterious forces. Ostracized by her classmates after losing her best friend and first love, Chloe, Eleanor has spent the past year in a haze, vowing to stay away from anything resembling romance.
But when a handwritten guide to tarot arrives in the mail at the witchy souvenir store where Eleanor works, it seems to bring with it the message that magic is about to enter her life. Cynical Eleanor is quick to dismiss this promise, until real-life witch Pix shows up with an unusual invitation. Inspired by the magic and mystery of the tarot, Eleanor decides to open herself up to making friends with Pix and her coven of witches, and even to the possibility of a new romance.
But Eleanor’s complicated history in Salem continues to haunt her, and she is desperate to keep Pix from finding out the truth. Eleanor will have to reckon with the old ghosts that threaten to destroy everything, even her chance at new love.

When my daughter recommended Long Live Evil she said, “it’s batshit crazy in the best possible way.” Let me add that it’s a good plane book.
Just be aware that it’s the first in a series and the ending is more cliffhanger and less conclusion.

my favourite stories - 2/? - The Emerald Atlas by John Stephens
Time, Kate was learning, was like a river. You might put up obstacles, even divert it briefly, but the river had a will of its own. It wanted to flow a certain way. You had to force it to change. You had to be willing to sacrifice.

I just started reading “Servant Mage” by Kate Elliott, after seeing it had a dragon on the cover. The beginning was a bit slow-going but it’s catching on now that I have the goals of the mission down. Fingers crossed this picks up fast. 🤞

okay im actually tired of arwen being so fucking dramatic💀 kane literally does EVERYTHING for her to make sure she’s happy and safe and the second he keeps something from her, and usually something that has nothing to do with her at all, suddenly she doesn’t care if he lives or dies. she’s so fucking annoying.
and about the whole her being a fae thing, so fucking what if he didnt tell her? its not that deep. after everything he did for her, saving her over and over again. saving her family over and over again. and she tells him she hates him and doesn’t wanna be with him just because he lied to her about one thing?💀 so fucking immature and so fucking annoying. i will NOT be reading the second book because this shit just pissed me off soooo bad.

Book Review: Magic Slays (Kate Daniels #5) by Ilona Andrews
Tumblr media
Another fun addition to the series!
The emotional development of the characters was fabulous, particularly in regards to Kate learning the truth about Voron and her mother and watching her and Curran navigate their committed, live in, mate relationship. I do think the plot fell apart a little in this one, though. It wasn't cohesive, didn't flow as well. I enjoyed seeing Kate and Andrea try to get the private investigation firm up and running, but the Kamen mystery with the magical box didn't land as hard as I would've liked. Probably because of all the other conflicts going on. Namely the lynx crisis and Julie being in danger. As a result, the ending felt anticlimactic even though it was moving to see Kate get so emotionally distraught over needing to save her kid. (She truly is such a badass. Can I be her when I grow up?)
Not my favorite, but still rather enjoyable.
3.5/5 stars

Elysium Girls || Kate Pentecost || 400 pages Top 3 Genres: Fantasy / Young Adult / LGBTQIA+
Synopsis: In this sweeping Dust Bowl-inspired fantasy, a ten-year game between Life and Death pits the walled Oklahoma city of Elysium-including a girl gang of witches and a demon who longs for humanity-against the supernatural in order to judge mankind.
When Sal is named Successor to Mother Morevna, a powerful witch and leader of Elysium, she jumps at the chance to prove herself to the town. Ever since she was a kid, Sal has been plagued by false visions of rain, and though people think she's a liar, she knows she's a leader. Even the arrival of enigmatic outsider Asa-a human-obsessed demon in disguise-doesn't shake her confidence in her ability. Until a terrible mistake results in both Sal and Asa's exile into the Desert of Dust and Steel.
Face-to-face with a brutal, unforgiving landscape, Sal and Asa join a gang of girls headed by another Elysium exile-and young witch herself-Olivia Rosales. In order to atone for their mistake, they create a cavalry of magic powered, scrap metal horses to save Elysium from the coming apocalypse. But Sal, Asa, and Olivia must do more than simply tip the scales in Elysium's favor-only by reinventing the rules can they beat the Life and Death at their own game.

December 2023 Reviews
Finally wrapping up on my 2023 reviews but I’m overwhelmed so I've decided to condense them all into one post;
On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous - Ocean Vuong (★ ★ ★ ★/5); absolutely devastating I had tears in my eyes the entire time
A Touch of Ruin (Persephone x Hades #2) - Scarlett St. Clair (★ ★/5); how can someone write a 400 page book where nothing happens???
Radiant Sin (Dark Olympus #4) - Katee Robert (★ ★/5); lowkey the weakest book yet, it was kind of boring and although I loved Cassandra, the other characters were eh
Cruel Seduction (Dark Olympus #5) - Katee Robert (★ ★ ★/5); enemies to lovers and polyamory? Fuck yeah sign me up
A Touch of Malice (Persephone x Hades #3) - Scarlett St. Clair (★ ★ ★/5); this just in/ the two characters argue in circles about the same thing for the entire book… except at some point there’s a wedding
The Light We Carry - Michelle Obama (★ ★ ★ ★ ★/5); mother!! Genuinely, Michelle Obamas words are so comforting I love this woman
Book Lovers - Emily Henry (★ ★ ★ ★ ★/5); why can’t I find someone like Charlie, all I’m asking for is a man that READS
Caliban’s War (The Expanse #2) - James S. A. Corey (★ ★ ★/5); do I have any idea what’s going on? No. Am I enjoying the ride? Yes. Strap me into the spaceship let’s shoot some bitches & destroy moons!
The Will to Change - bell hooks (★ ★ ★ ★/5); shook up my worldviews and really made me think about my relationship with men and my anger with them
Perfect on Paper - Sofia Gonzales (★ ★ ★ ★/5); actually really cute despite not being the lil wlw story I was envisioning (long live chaotic bisexuals)
