Aikido journal, I guess

Today, after about two months of not going to practise and generally living in a depressed fugue, I actually went to the dojo.

(Holy fuck I did not realise how long it has been)

Due to COVID, our dojo has split into smaller training groups based on the kuy or dan they're practising for, and today it was only me and sensei.

We started with jo kihon suburi and went over each move individually, with me doing repetitions and getting corrections, before I ran through the whole set once. The three katates especially were great fun! I have good reach with my height and the ceilings are tall. Hasso gaeshi ushiro harai is also one of my favourites for this exact reason - speed and freedom of movement, and that dance-like tenkan... it's *chef's kiss*.

Then a runthrough of katas 13 and 31. 13 has always been weaker for me and I'd forgotten parts, but 31 I could run through in my sleep (ofc, now that I've said that I'm bound to forget a part next time). I once again did repetitions and got corrections.

We got a break from regularly scheduled training to do a little bit of testing to check the motion range of my shoulders. Afterwards we still had a little bit of time left, so katadori menuchi ikkyo it was - another fun one. Traditionally, we closed practise with suwariwaza kokyo ho, and then I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to sit in seiza for a long stretch of time as we chatted after final bows. Standing up was hell, of course, but sitting still was okay.

All in all, I fucking loved going to practise, fuck my depression for keeping me away. I've felt pretty bad about missing practise, yet getting up and going to the dojo felt like an insurmountable challenge. I'm so fucking glad I got past it.

I could not for the life of me find kanji lyrics for this anywhere so again it had to be done by ear, which of course means: I don’t trust it at all lol. Probably not doing the entire album unless I someday manage to acquire kanji lyrics, but I didn’t want to let alucard-chan down because it’s a pretty cool song.

Others progress too.

As I get more seasons in at the dojo, I'm starting to notice more how more junior members are practicing, and they are advancing. And while I've felt at a plateau personally for a while, it's good to see the group that started almost two years ago (when I was helping with the beginner's classes) are not at a plateau.

Sunday was a sweaty, smoking mess, what with over 400 active forest fires in British Columbia. Despite the closest one being 100 km away, some of it is here. Oh, and me with the first hangover in a forever or so, due to a beautiful wedding Saturday, Sensei called things to a halt early, for which I was thankful for once. But before then...

Dylan was working on "whatever" from katatedori, and I was not able to spot a favourite technique. That's unusual and good; jiyu waza is three belt tests away from his current rank! We also worked a bit on shomenuchi awase (awasu?), and I wish it was part of the regular classes instead of just learned by implication. James sensei offered us some tips for expressing more energy.

At the Sunday open practice, the informal rule is, within limits, block incorrect technique. I helped Alex with katadori nikyo, and he kept on moving straight back instead of off the line on the initial movement. After few of those, I decided to 'let' him do it and showed what anyone outside the dojo would do: come straight forward. I am easily half again his weight, and being bulldozed by me shaking my head "nope" surprised him. The second time, he was less surprised and tried to apply the wrist lock anyways, only to discover than you can't when your hands are crumpled up to your sternum. So he got another "nope" out of me, along with a kokyu ho back stretch. The third time, bless his persevering heart, he tried going straight back and thengetting off the line and doing a... a... I guess judoka would call it de ashi harai, but don't quote me on that, it was behind the knee instead of behind my ankle. and the main reason it didn't work was because I hadn't lost my balance. He's inventive, for sure. But still, "nope."

And then he thought about it for a moment and proceded to do it right four times in a row, the way that sensei showed. The wrist lock was good enough that I wasn't even tempted to do a reversal!

It may be second hand, but it's still pride. I'll take it.

D-day -9 before my 1st-kyu test! Of course my head is totally empty and I am mixing up everything. Oh well, nothing new here. Some good rest, a bit more training to stop thinking about it and JUST DO IT, and it should be fine... RIGHT?

It doesn’t help that sensei plays with my nerves during my free practice, and interrupts me to call out waza that are typically requested only for the shodan test. I stumbled a bit, not sure I heard him right. 

Language barrier here, but when said very fast ‘ushiro katadori ikkyo’ sounds awfully like ‘ushiro katatedori ikkyo’ -- so much in fact that my uke got it wrong the first time, got an earful, and had to start again, giving me 2 seconds to improvise something. I am used to sankyo on this shoulder grab from behind, not ikkyo.

We had to roll on the flooring, outside the tatami, because we were so many, and the two of us needed more space. Although sensei said it was tooootally fine to throw my sempai as usual on the hard floor, I tried to go softer... and not transform him into a bowling ball striking the kids’ parents sitting there.

The kid is doing his own 8th-kyu test tomorrow night, I’m so happy and proud of him :)

My forearms hurt like h****. I’ve got bruises the size of coins on both, just below the wrists. Tomorrow my arm muscles will make me weep. One full hour practicing variations on katadori menuchi (rings a bell @randomoverwatt ?) with a nitpicking sensei breathing down my neck and *pushing back* with all his weight 10 times in a row until my speed, timing and placement clicked. 

Throwback to those months before my first test ever when he wanted to drill the proper timing on shomen uchi ikkyo.

Relax, it’s only chaos

Ralph sensei returns after some time away. We went through morotedori kokyu ho, ushiro katatedori sankyo, katadori nikyo, and finished the class with a circle of death (Will's first). Usually, with morotedori kokyu ho, Ralph sensei shows how to move the elbow in, or underneath, to corrupt the grip. Today, a surprise: if there's any forward movement, just relax the elbow. Uke will stumble into you. The very hard part is relaxing the elbow as opposed to drawing it in using muscles. If you use muscles, it turns the kata into a football game (american style). Nobody wins american football. He practiced with me until he was certain I understood what he meant about not using muscles to draw in. The last part of class was circle of death: everyone surrounds nage, and whoever nage looks at may attack. Once everyone has been thrown, next nage goes in. Will had not seen this before, but did really well! Martin kept standing up halfway through my nikyo pins until I figured out that I wasn't controlling the elbow during the transition between the 90° extension and the sitting pin. That'll learn me. Big C still practicing. I have no words beyond "dedicated".
