The Hundred Endings That Really, Really, Really could’ve been less

So I just finished every ending in The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy, the latest strategy rpg / visual novel by famed Danganronpa visionary Kazutaka Kodaka. It’s a massive work with way, way too much content, but if you enjoy a good mystery box or just want to play a fun strategy rpg, I’d say you’re in luck. But there’s so many routes, are most of them actually good? Well let’s go below the cut and find out.

So the premise if you don’t know is that a bunch of teenagers wake up in a school seemingly in the middle of an apocalyptic landscape. The school is surrounded by gigantic flames to keep monstrous invaders outside. If the invaders get inside the school, humanity as a whole is done for. Our (now) superpowered protagonists have as little information as the player does regarding this entire scenario, for they’ve been living relatively mundane lives up to this point.

The bottom line: It’s pretty fun

Granted, at it’s best it is in fact an amazing work. The main scenario had me needing more at every given moment all the way to the end. The way this mystery box drips little bits of reveals to the player for over a hundred hours (about 150 in my case) is handled really well. Dozens of hours into the game you’ll still have several theories for any given mystery because there’s just that many missing pieces of information.

I’d say as far as the main scenarios go the game is really, really good.

The second half of this game however much resembles an exquisite corpse. Once the player is finally able to make choices to alter the course of the story, your mileage may vary depending on the writer assigned to the story choices you make, choices which in sum lead up to 100 different endings (so far). While having such an expansive game is a great idea, having an army of writers all with their own voice you’re bound to run into some duds. Hell the Comedy Route straight up says out loud that obviously not every ending’s gonna be done properly when there’s that many.

It also feels pretty obvious whenever you diverge from the main branch, though (a couple choices aside) knowing Kodaka and how the story is written it’s also pretty obvious how to stay in the main branch all the way to the end (never kill anyone, never sacrifice anyone except those two times you have to, never keep secrets from the group, think of The Weapon as part of the team, be willing to trust even The Traitor, basically be a good boy all the way through), making pretty much every other choice an “ah, of course I would get this fanfic, I obviously chose something that’s blatantly out of character”. But some of those fanfics, whew, they’re really good!

Speaking of revealing or hiding the truth and confiding in one’s friends, I have to wonder what exactly Kodaka’s gone through in his life recently to etch this issue so hard into this one work. Throughout many scenarios our lead guy Takumi Sumino will often decide to lie or hide information “for the greater good” or simply do so because it’s convenient and every single time it will come back to bite him in the ass in an entirely disproportionate karmic punishment, or at the very least he will get heavily reprimanded for it.

It’s reminiscent of Immanuel Kant’s Right to Truth in how often the work tries to tell the player that it is always unequivocally wrong to unilaterally act for the greater good as opposed to trusting the judgement of your peers and always disclosing info to them so that you can come together to a unified conclusion as a team. Is everything alright at home Kodaka? Was it you who hid something and regretted it or was it someone else who hurt you by doing so? I honestly want the tea fr.

Anyway, as you might assume some routes are embarrassingly bad and straight up feel like you’re being punished for diverging, but other routes are pretty goated and will often have better endings than the extremely depressing “main” scenario endings. IIRC Kodaka himself said that you should just play until you reach an ending you find satisfying and call it quits at that point if you’re happy with that. Guess our boy Takumi requires a little extra push to get a good ending, being a good boy all along just won’t cut it.

How about the gameplay?

Well this is also a strategy game after all, not just a visual novel. I’m pleased to say the gameplay is honestly pretty fun! (At least while it lasts lol) Throughout the first scenario and perhaps your first route in the second half of the game you’ll likely be very entertained if you enjoy the srpg genre. However by the time you’ve cleared your first “route” in the second half of the game you’ll have already beaten nearly every “unique” fight in the game, and the system will outright ask whether you want to skip subsequent repeated combat scenarios, which I of course did like 90% of the time.

Even if you couldn’t skip the combat scenarios that you’ve already cleared, your characters will get incredibly busted as time goes on. Clearing routes normally will award your characters executions which will boost their powers making them fill the charge bar faster and making their charge attack stronger. Feeding lots of executions to one single character is going to turn them into a mini nuke that will decimate bosses quite quickly (careful though, you may be left without that character for story reasons, unless it’s Takumi himself).

Your characters can also be boosted via materials that you can gather throughout the free time segments, upgrading their skills is certainly vital to dealing big damage. These materials can also be used to enhance the several items that can aid you in battle. These items include fences and bombs to stop enemies from attacking the base or potions to make your characters stronger offensively or defensively for one turn. I for one love the Desperation Potion that leaves your character with 1hp, making them instantly able to do a suicide special attack that greatly fills up the charge bar leaving room for another character to also do a special attack or simply boost their hemoanima before proceeding to the next round of combat.

Speaking of suicide, this is very much an “hp is a resource” type of game and I love that. You’ll seemingly get an S-Rank in any mission as long as your base has over 50% health and killing off your characters boosts your charge meter greatly so going nuts and having your characters die off right before the end of a wave will actually give you a pretty solid boost in strength by filling the charge bar by 100%. Once the next wave arrives the characters will have revived so there’s no loss as long as you time things properly.

The game’s pretty fun but at no point is it actually “challenging” in the default difficulty. The reason it’s still fun is due to the many ways you can optimize each turn to kill the most enemies at any given moment. I think a little boost in difficulty wouldn’t hurt at all, but I’m dumb and can’t find the option to increase the difficulty (if it even exists) so I can’t say for sure. Also I just read the rules for the actual hard mode and it seems disproportionately hard compared to the middle difficulty I played at, the fuck you mean every attack kills you that’s bananas.

Gotta say though with regard to progressing with the many routes I’m surprised there’s very little gameplay-story integration, like “win before X turns to get this ending” and such. Think there’s only one time I remember where the story progresses differently depending on which ally you save on a map, and then there’s that one time where depending on which ally you follow as a crazed slasher (it’s complicated, you’ll get it eventually) you get a different ending. Speaking of choices and routes,

The routes!

Alright time for the real meat of the game and as expected it’s all spoilers below so look away if you can’t handle those, hell even if you haven’t played through some of these most of what I’m saying will not make any sense. There’s too many routes so the commentary on each of these will be rather brief. Also these are not strictly ordered btw, most items within each tier are simply in the order I got them, only V’ehxness being put at the top because come on.

S Tier/Untiered: These are the main scenario. It’s really good and I’d say it’s unfair to compare the full work of the game’s director/producer/lead writer to the work of an author invited to write a route as a guest.

Last Defense Academy 2nd Scenario (and route 0): The “canon” route boasting the highest production values and the most in-character-ness when compared to route 0 (which is how we will be referring to the first playthrough), of course it’s good. I’ve never doubted Kodaka despite dr3 (and I do mean dr3, NOT V3. V3 was amazing). I suspect that saying this route is your favorite will probably be seen as akin to saying Mario is your favorite Mario character. To that I will say: Vanilla is in fact a wonderful flavor and anyone who renounces it out of fear of being perceived as “boring” is inevitably a boring person themselves.

Reset “Route”: I mean, it’s more of an alt ending to the previous one rather than a “route” as a whole but they still named it like this. Thing is while second scenario is great the ending is rather bleak. This one’s even bleaker but at least our familiar faces are less affected at face value I guess. This is why we have so many other endings, so you can choose one that’s somewhat happier than these two lol. Also dear god the way Nozomi is basically cattle in both these endings is hilarious, just a sack of dna for earth to persist. My girl wanted to DIE in COMBAT for THE GREATER GOOD of HUMANITY. Hell I think she’d be happy to die for free, she sure did that in route 0. Instead she’s reduced to working as a baby factory for humanity to be able to live on at least for 30 more years until she hits menopause and becomes unable to breed. Get ready for the most suicidal humanity you’ve ever seen lol. Goes to show: dying for a cause is easy, but living for it is a whole other issue.

Also the inbreeding coefficient on this ending is insane. Having an effective population of like 12 means that unless hemoanima can somehow avoid genetic diseases then their grandchildren are fucked (that’s without getting into the fact they’re all blood related to begin with lol). Let’s be real though surely Yugamu and Tsubasa will come up with some genius invention to manipulate genes and whatnot so who cares.

As a side note before moving on, I was disappointed by most of the routes I read before reading second scenario (think I hit this around 30 endings or so, can’t quite recall), as I felt my time was being wasted on filler. Even though I was always predisposed to read all 100 endings, prior to reading 2nd I felt like my time was being wasted and I wanted to “continue” with the “actual” story. Upon clearing 2nd I became a lot more resilient to otherwise mediocre routes as my thirst for the main continuity had already been sated (can’t even imagine how much I would’ve hated BoB if it was my first route). That’s not to say you should rush to it, so far I don’t think the game requires any kind of recommended route order but I think routes C tier and below will probably feel rather bad if you stumble into them as your first, but hey to each their own.

A tier: I think these are all fairly good, fun and/or well written, they add value to the game and contribute to making the world that much richer. Not only are they not a waste of time, they’re actually enjoyable all throughout. I’m not saying these are all equally good, I’m saying these are the actually good ones. And as I said before, the order is just the order I played them in, aside from the very first one.

V’ehxness Route: Soooo goooood omg I need her to keep me chained up as her pet. Seriously though giving slightly more depth to V’ehxness and her commanders so that they can be proper characters and also showing their internal conflicts and allegiances is just great, I really enjoyed this one so much and they went really hard on all the artwork. Tsubasa also had great moments as is usual for her, she’s seriously the character that improves the most in routes compared to how she is in the main continuity where she’s mostly just treated as the barf girl.

Casual Route: Helll yeah, addressing my main concern with Eva’s brainwashing and my main suspicion for their past memories all in one. The endings themselves are nothing to write home about and the matrix reference a bit too on the nose but actually reading through the route is a joy. Sorry Takemaru, this is probably the most screentime you’ll have, at least you’re kind of a cool guy in Killing Game too I guess.

Multiple Eitos Route: Chef’s kisses. Granted it’s frustrating that Takumi does come up with a couple of cool ideas to beat Eito at his game and they just don’t work because of bs, but this is more of a horror route after all so it makes sense that nothing would work as intended. Multiple Eitos cheering on Takumi to kill himself makes me smile a bit whenever I remember it and the narration for the several consecutive suicides reminds me of that one Shadow bit from tails gets trolled which also always brings a smile to my face. Also Eito saying they’re “like a Sumino being lit by an Aotsuki” is an insaaaaanely gay line that’s completely lost in translation, you guys are missing out fr, that single line in japanese is gayer than that one ending from Cult of Takumi.

Coming of Age Route: LOVE AND PEACE! Even if this bizarre version of Eito wasn’t in the route just seeing Shion (or rather Fire Boy) being able to come closer to the gang is heartwarming for sure, that boy is alright. This route is just fun, truly the SEISHUN route, I approve entirely. Tsubasa is also really cute in this one, big love her. I also really like how Shion says something like “these 60 days were my whole life so I’m grateful for them, I’ll never forget them” because unbeknownst to him and the others, those same days were the only ones in the lives of everyone else. Truly poetic.

Retsnom: Really cool read, never really drags. To anyone who says they like Darumi only once they read this route (or killing game), you’re all cowards. ALL of her dialogue is gold, at any point in the game. You’re sorely lacking in brainpower if you can’t imagine depth to a character on your own, plus anyone who’s knowledgeable on eroge is bound to be a profound and complex individual for better or worse. Might as well mention here I love how Darumi recommends Saya no Uta early on in route 0 which was actually foreshadowing for Eito’s condition, and this route doubles down on the reference by having Eito actually see Retsnom as a beautiful being. The route is really good and you should also read Saya no Uta, it’s only like 5 hours long at most, plus Darumi recommends it, are you gonna leave her hanging? Oh right, and Darumi sucking up V’ehxness was hot as hell, new fetish acquired.

Cult of Takumi Route (pic related): You might have already inferred I’m a big, big partisan of “Takumi is never really himself in other routes. He becomes a result of our forced choices on anything that isn’t 2nd scenario, blablabla”. However I still feel disgusted at Takumi for the way he treats Shion on this one. Way to shift the tone from a potential actual comedy route into the most vile thing ever in just one scene. Worst thing is Takumi’s change in attitude comes out of guilt from fucking SIREI being dealt away with, the worthless clanker who you’re obviously always justified to get rid of, why would you ever get riled up over that lmao. Anyway, I just think Hiruko should’ve gotten every “reward” instead of the others (plus a real, real shame that Darumi isn’t in this one). Oh and that one Eito ending didn’t need to go that hard, but kudos to them for daring to do so.

Romance route:

Kurara Chapter: “I liked watching movies with Kurara. There was no denying that. But how do I really feel about her?” That’s an all-timer for me man. A seemingly silly route should not have such an insanely strong and personal line dwelling within it. If you ever broke it off with someone who shares nearly all the same interests as you, you’ll get it. Anyway, Kurara quitting and then un-quitting was pretty cute, she has a lot of great moments in the novel even if she’s just annoying most of the time. Also Moko with glasses is a really cute addition to the route, she’s great.

Kyoshika chapter: Rejecting her to move on to another ending takes an insane amount of willpower (with Kurara I didn’t even stop to get her ending the first time lol). This is why I don’t like visual novels formatted like Sharin no Kuni, what do you mean we lived through All Of That together and I’m just supposed to move on like nothing? But well, I guess that’s another life bomb the romance route dropped on me.

Tsubasa chapter: either someone in staff loves her seiyuu or her greed knows no bounds. She already has a lovey-dovey route in Killing Game but also hogs one of the slots in romance route too? And all Darumi gets is retsnom? She’s alive in this route, you know? Anyway, the real harem ending was pretty cute, and the fake harem ending was a reference to The Infamous Picture from Xenoblade 3??????? Lmao

SF Route (pic related): The “meta” route. I first entered this route when I was at +90 endings so Hiruko saying she’s been through the 100 days over 100 times is much more relatable now even if it’s not exactly news at this point. Also since I naturally hit this one last, it’s hard to tell if I even needed to do all the others first. I do feel a bit of a lack of planning with regards to route 0 being the actual first instance of the loop, or Hiruko already being so competent in route 0. Think it would have been easier to say it wasn’t her first rodeo, but rather just the first one that Takumi remembers. Hell that would be a pretty cool story: A greenhorn Hiruko who’s not quite as rude or cold trying desperately to win against the invaders, grows closer to Takumi but he dies on day 99 making her go back in time to fix it all. But now he doesn’t remember her and he’ll never be quite the same, instead she has to see him fawn over Nozomi (or Tsubasa, or whomever) every single time the loop resets which drives her to be even colder and more ruthless with each loop, resulting in her spartan route 0 behavior that gets her killed early. Alas, that is not the case so let’s leave that to ao3.

Anyway, this route feels a lot like in Haruhi when Kyon had to go back in time to make sure his future (now present) self would save him in the past, or when he had to become John Smith because he was always John Smith to begin with and time is recursive. I do like that Takumi ponders on how cute Killing Game Tsubasa is once he recovers that memory as she is definitely the highlight for that route.

While I see people online shitting on Takumi for projecting past versions of characters onto their current selves who are objectively different people, this is something the game not only acknowledges a few times but it’s fair to say that doing the extreme opposite is also a flaw. It would seem that simply holding a conversation with Takumi about previous loops is enough to unseal his ability to remember them. However Hiruko is fundamentally afraid of “her” Takumi never coming back, justifiably so after seeing him get together with so many other girls in so many other timelines. I feel like she wouldn’t have had to live through 40 years of loops if she wasn’t so afraid to hit on Takumi and just claim him as her property, attraction to other girls be dammed.

As for the endings, “one massacre to another” would’ve been funnier if the missiles somehow hit the escape pod lol, but perhaps that’s a bit too high budget. Also that cg of Takumi carrying Hiruko just feels wrong. She’s 13cm taller than him! Proportions in this game are whack, what do you mean Kyoshika weighs 48kg at 163cm. That’s insane, the girl’s malnourished. Reminds me of that 0kg oppai video. Anyway, it’s a really cool route and I would’ve happily cried at the happy ending if I was reading it alone. And then I still had 5 endings to reach the 100, that’s awkward, guess that’s the problem with not having a “true” ending.

B Tier: I think these are ok. They’re neat curios which don’t necessarily weigh down the game, I just happen to be hung up on one or two details about them, or just played them in the wrong headspace.

Slasher Route: Actually one of the better routes from the branch in which you kill the traitor, which I think are mostly subpar. It’s also a route that feels even better in retrospective, I just think everything really “fits” as it should, plus focusing on Hiruko is always good. Sadly (thanks to Killing Game mostly) when I started this one I thought of the “sponsor costume” as The Herald of Bad Routes so I was tremendously biased against this one from the start, the fact it managed to overcome that prejudice is actually tremendous.

Box of Calamity: it’s really funny when Nozomi is like “Takumi had you endangered anyone else I’d hate you for it and never forgive you but since you did it to me and I suck donkey dick and deserve to die anyway then it’s ok”. Like, girl, Shouma may have awful self esteem but your self preservation is the worst lmao. Anyway, once again Takumi and Eva prove to be a rather cute couple. But did we really need EIGHT endings on this one??? I’m only gonna forgive this because you gave us Takumi and Gaku fooling around splashing each other and giggling before realizing they were being hella gay.

Conspiracy Route: This route looks really funny on the flowchart due to the huge amount of dead ends and choices lol, plus if you’ve done the surrounding routes prior to this one you already know there’s no way the route will go all the way to the 100th day. I’ll give you a real conspiracy: they crammed 8 endings into this really tiny route because it was the fastest way to reach 100, hell one of the endings barely makes any sense and is quite literally called “Out of Ideas”. Anyway, Nozomi as usual is hilarious she’s like “I don’t care if my memories are fake, I want to FIGHT TO THE DEATH”, that’s just awesome, she really really needs this war to give meaning to her life please understand.

Mystery Route: This was the very first route I hit and as you might expect, I hit the story lock and could not progress with it until I hit SF. But SF was the very LAST route I started. Needless to say much of the tension is gone. Also by the time the lock comes undone SF is the route I want to be reading, not this one. Anyway, it’s pretty cool, Nozomi’s death is hilarious. I’m also glad Takumi consistently goes into commas so that the route doesn’t waste any time, more routes should’ve done this. I can’t tell if we needed more or less story locks in this game, but this one sure didn’t work all that well for me.

C Tier: I mean they’re not worthless, but I definitely feel more negative than positive about these. “I wish I was reading something better” would be my most common thought throughout these.

Killing Game Route: I really like Tsubasa in this route, as everyone should. I’ve already said this but she really shines in the hands of any writer who doesn’t treat her as simply the barf girl. Darumi also shines a lot in this one. They both shine even brighter when they kiss for a full minute. Takumi should’ve died instead of Hiruko so Darumi could’ve had a harem. It’s also cool that someone finally has the balls to tell Nozomi her mom sucks donkey dick and it’s fucked up that she has her priorities backwards (though then we have Nozomi becoming basically a mother so she can just keep sacrificing her life for someone else, continuing to lead a life of sacrifice only now slightly more justified. But hey you win some you lose some). So the character writing is ok really but honestly the killing game itself is just stupid, the sponsor is stupid, the tension is forced, the reveals are unexciting, everything regarding the actual plot in this one is fucking dumb and I don’t like it. Sucks to suck 🤷‍♂️

Goodbye Eito Route: Yeah it’s pretty sad and all but let’s face the FACT: Eito made up this route so people would feel BAD for him. Seriously the whole thing reeks of that picture (pic related) of the dog who made a huge mess with the caption “acting like a victim” which by the way is precisely what comes to mind every time people online minimize Eito’s actions while vilifying Takumi’s “lack of accommodation for his disability” or some shit, “your honor my sweet baby bean is neurodivergent AND a minor while the manipulative neurotypical Takumi is pure evil”. Some real me sowing vs me reaping type of shit. Anyway, it’s fun to see him regain his humanity or whatever, it’s an alright “route” (really more of a tangent or tiny side story).

Box of Blessings: I know you’ll think I’m insane for putting this so high but let me land. Gaku’s harem is a rather funny ending even if it’s a joke that undermines how serious he gets through the route. Blessed by a Miracle while objectively one of the happier endings for the gang feels kind of whatever, like I’m happy to see them again but, eh. HOWEVER, Shouma going off against V’exhness and Eito was glorious, that was REALLY cool of him, though I think the intercept system probably killed all of them in that ending lol. Still, Shouma shines a lot in this and his other ending for BoB, he’s cool on my book and single handedly carries it out of the lower tiers. The Nozomi branch is just dogshit all throughout even if you do find those interesting papers. Anyway while the endings are mostly fine, actually going through the route is a chore, and I can’t even imagine playing this while not skipping any of the exploration, sounds like torture, I completely understand anyone who rates this lower, or even as the worst of all routes.

D Tier: lol

Eva Route: Honor where honor is due, Eva vs V’ehxness was hype moments and aura. Outside of that it’s a rather nothing route, though I do agree Eva and Takumi make quite a cute couple. They got a similar stench of misery to them.

Rebellion Route: the radiation ending might just be the actual fucking dumbest shit I’ve seen in the entire game, and there’s plenty of competition so that’s a feat.

F Tier: lmao even

Serial Battles Route: Look I love the final fight because it was possibly the last breath of fresh gameplay I was gonna get for the rest of the game, but skipping that many fights is just tedious and playing through them would be even worse. Like I see the joke but it just doesn’t land. Route so nothing it doesn’t even get any ending artworks. Oh right the Eva vs Eva moment was pretty funny, I’ll admit that. But seriously I feel bad imagining someone out there who somehow hits this one as their very first route. Do gotta say though, keeping the kids busy does prove a surefire way to avoid drama. If other routes prove anything compared to this one is that being all safe and coddled up behind their little wall of fire drives the cast’s paranoia through the roof whereas on this route they don’t even have time for all that nonsense.

Comedy Trout: I like how Granblue Fantasy, Spongebob and Hundred Line all agree that having realistic fish next to cartoon characters is innately funny, (it absolutely is). I like that it mentions how there’s way too many endings for all of them to be actually good. But did we really need THAT much Free Time? Perhaps this is an insane thing to complain about to some but having to skip that many days is just really annoying, basically the same problem as Serial Battles. This would be bumped up one or two tiers if Takumi just fell asleep for several days at a time as he does in mystery.

So yeah, that’s my brief commentary on all the routes. I could briefly trash talk the likely underpaid dub team, talk about how sexy Turantammi is or I could just shit on Eva’s more absurd sprites (look man I like saimin and all but… this ain’t it, those sprites are hideous) but let’s just focus for now on the seemingly unanswered stuff. If you have better answers for these or I’m missing some vital pieces of dialogue explaining these, please do share lol, I read this at my workplace for the most part so I didn’t have my attention at 100% sometimes.

-The call at the end of Route 0

The entire sequence is obviously absurd to begin with and exists only as a hype moment right before the second part of the game. Like you’re seriously expecting Takumi to just be standing there on school as if nothing happened and answer the phone like nothing??? Lmao. I assumed at first that likely something even worse had happened at the satellite but to be fair, there’s plenty of stuff at the satellite that could make them go nuts upon being revealed, so I’m chalking this one up as a nothingburger.

-Hiruko already being knowledgeable about invaders and having her main skill maxed out on route 0: I think this is just poor planning. By the time the studio ran out of money they couldn’t go back and change the whole thing. Like I said on my SF commentary, it would’ve been cool if it wasn’t Hiruko’s first loop but rather the first loop that Takumi does remember. Apparently there’s a Hiruko novel though, maybe that’s the answer, see if I care.

-THE SECOND COMING?????: woah woah woah hold your fucking horses did JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD AND SAVIOR also bless Futurans with his visit, then also told them he’d be back AND he had cryptoglobin? Cryptoglobin SO powerful that Shion is the only one that could compare in who knows how long? I repeat, SECOND COMING??? If it wasn’t Jesus Christ, WHO is the first coming? Did they crucify him too? I sure hope not!

-Why does the parallel leap machine even exist?? Also the time traveling woman who saves their asses in SF: I think it’s the same answer for both. Hiruko in the future builds a time machine and uses it to go back in time to leave the tools necessary for her escape from the cursed loop. Let’s be real though if anyone’s building a time machine, it’s Tsubasa in a shed with a handful of scraps and she’d get it done in like two days, call her Jevil cause that girl can do anything. Also since the woman was dressed in white my mind went to Nozomi first, I can’t imagine Hiruko ever wearing white. Maybe shiny Nozomi just gets the power to travel through time or whatever. Speaking of that

Let’s be real though, that shit was insane, I really DON’T like quantum occurrences as Hiruko referred to them with the bacteria crap, it ended up looking like cut/planned content before they ran out of money for the game.

So yeah, all in all Hundred Line was pretty fun, not sure if “worth 150 hours of your life” fun but fun for sure, definitely better than spending 150 hours on some gacha that will never wrap up its story or whatever. I’d say I’m going with 4/5 at the very least, but you know how it is with long works. It’s easier to be a 5/5 when your work is only a few hours but even staying a 3/5 for over 100 hours actually takes a lot of effort, a 4/5 at this runtime is pretty good. Here's a super obscure idol for you, even by chika idol standards (though still not nearly as obscure as いざ参らん lol). Formerly a founding member of 夢幻のシナリオ (Mugen no Scenario) up until November 2024. Though she doesn't seem to be active as an idol anymore, I love love love these songs, so here I am. The lyrics were quite short in spite of the song itself being on the longer side. The lyrics were also pretty simple (I didn't even have to pull out the dictionary for this one, yhh) so this was a nice little break for my poor, overworked brain (I haven't slept in two days, don't tell anyone).

Hmm, maybe I should translate a Mugen no Scenario song as well. Ughh, I wish I could translate every idol song in the world. Curse the constraints of this mortal body!!

Bet. Here is Emptiness by Made in Maiden. As for Grand Guignol, I can't find the lyrics anywhere, and my epic TuneCore hacks don't work because NexTone doesn't have lyrics for me to snatch in the first place. (╯︵╰,) I'll definitely keep my eyes on that, though, because I am quite interested in the lyrics for that one.

This one was interesting to translate. I wouldn't say it was as difficult as Thread of Intention, but I had to essentially rewire my brain to make sense of these lyrics. I had to rearrange sentences so that they made sense in English and use context clues to figure out what certain lines mean a lot more than usual for this one. It's entirely possible (very likely) that I missed a lot of nuance here or just completely misinterpreted stuff. I also may or may not be slightly sleep-deprived, so, there's that too. But, it was still fun, and I feel 1% smarter than I did yesterday!

(Notes) *Garandou means a temple that is vast and empty. While the purpose of the comparison here is to, again, restate the whole “being empty on the inside” thing, I personally feel like this particular comparison carries the nuance of “being magnificent on the outside, but hollow within.” *I have no bloody clue how to translate this line into English, ngl. I tried, but it's not great.

Final Thoughts: Evidently, the idea of being “empty” is a big theme here, and the line 刻み続けてあげる, which I have interpreted as “I’ll keep ticking (like a clock)” kinda gives me the feeling of trudging through life like clockwork— not because you want to, but because it’s all you can really do. It’s all you were made to do. Additionally, just like most Made in Maiden songs, it seems, there's subtle implications that the subject of the song may not be fully human (the aforementioned 刻み続けてあげる, 硝子の瞳, and 血も涙も流れぬ軀が壊れてしまう), which can also link back to that emptiness.

PLASTiC SYNDROME 〜整形依存のうた〜 (Seikei Izon no Uta) By MAD MEDiCiNE

There’s a lot of big words in this one, but it’s still leagues easier than the absolute absurdity that is Kyousou shapeshifter. There’s not a lot of confusing grammatical things here— it’s actually pretty straightforward, all things considered. The real challenge is figuring out what in bloody hell all of this Kanji salad means. Luckily, that’s fairly easy with my handy little dictionary, and it didn’t pull a Kyousou shapeshifter on me by putting a crazy word like 猟奇 right in the middle of the chorus. I will say, though, I had to do a lot of guessing as to what all of it meant, so it’s entirely possible that this might be one of my worse translations. I’m just not smart like that, y'know. Eh, even so, I think it's alright. I've had this one in my notes for yonks, so I'm glad I got this finished and posted. This is my favourite song from the old system, so I've always wanted to see a translation of it. Me from two years ago probably would have never expected that the one who'd eventually translate it would be herself.

Also. I was messing around with the Tumblr formatting and learned that pasting from docs using ctrl+shift+v doesn't bloody lobotomise the thing, which is helpful. Unfortunately, that only works on computer, and it's still a bit of a nuisance to work with once it's pasted in.

*I have no bloody idea what any of this means. 醜形 appears to be the first half of 醜形恐怖症 which means body dysmorphia, but the rest of this line is just as perplexing. **I don't know how decimal numbers are said in Japanese and, even after listening to that part so many times, I just can’t tell what is being said, so I’ve left it in number form. If anyone knows this, please tell me. **This probably has the same meaning as 美醜, but the Kanji are reversed so that “ugliness” is first. The creative ways in which Japanese writers and lyricists utilise Kanji to create a deeper meaning in even the most straightforward of sentences never ceases to impress me. Things like that can’t really be achieved in a phonemic language like English.

CONCLUSION: this song is about plastic surgery. Ah… I guess that one was obvious just from the title alone, huh? My first time doing a conclusion section, which I told myself I would add at the end of every translation, subsequently forgot to add to Minzai, and finally remembered to add at the last second before posting this, and it’s completely pointless! Surely, that doesn't have bad connotations for the future of these conclusions. Uhh. What else can I say here? So AFTER it is revealed that their memories are made up but BEFORE Nozomi reveals her memories have also been tampered with there’s this absolutely INSANE limbo where you’re left wondering what the fuck was she smoking at the end of the first 100 days when she called him Takkun lmao.

Like sure, you’re about to win the 100 day war and go back to the satellite where you will quickly realize Karua never existed but you know what? Only for this moment I will act like your made up past is actually real to fuel your delusions just a day further. Like brooooo????? What????? What was she smoking???????? Hell even once he finds out the truth that Karua never even existed he’ll be eternally puzzled by those last words. Obviously then we get the explanation that her memories were also tampered with and it’s like oh well, was fun while it lasted.

But moving onto “I can’t read” and “I haven’t finished every route” territory: Even when it is revealed that her memories have also been tampered with it’s like… how DID she sneak into the mission? You’re telling me they made sure to wipe her slate clean with regards to meeting these kids but Sirei somehow isn’t aware of her existence AT ALL?

Like I know Sirei has been altering their memories in this route to be more compliant but her forgetting about meeting these kids in their tube is something she already seemed to forget the first time around anywah, and if she didn’t then yea it’s still pretty cruel of her to briefly acknowledge Takumi by his nickname at the end of the first cycle. “How could I forget…… you’re tube-kid aren’t you?” Probably just doesn’t work quite as well.

Anyway, don’t even know where I’m going with this but basically this very brief version of Nozomi was pretty metal. Really stoked the flames of war one last time right before dying JUST IN CASE the kid could travel back in time or something and it turns out he could, getting called Takkun with her dying breath was enough for him to reject moving on and instead dive back into the war from scratch.
