Taught class this morning since Axel was running short on time for the movers. We’re all going to miss him. Who’s going to do the ukemi classes now?
There was a new student in class so I taught the basics: tai no henko, morote dori kokyo ho then 4 shomenuchi techniques, 2 to the front (ikkyo katame waza & ikkyo nage waza) and 2 to the back (iriminage -- enter deeply & kotegaeshi nage waza -- enter shallowly). Ran out of time so skipped kokyo dosa. Yes, dame! Then I did kumi tachi & kumi jo review with Scott after class.
I still never have a “lesson plan” when I teach class ... but it’s less haphazard now. There are things I know I need to work on, things I want to explore, and things I want the other students to learn so I try to have some sort of game plan instead of just winging the class ... nothing’s ever concrete though ... I like tailoring the class to the students but we never know who is going show up to class.
What I need to work on: variations (styles), progressions, techniques and spacing, how weapons connect to tai sabaki, etc.

Others progress too.
As I get more seasons in at the dojo, I'm starting to notice more how more junior members are practicing, and they are advancing. And while I've felt at a plateau personally for a while, it's good to see the group that started almost two years ago (when I was helping with the beginner's classes) are not at a plateau.
Sunday was a sweaty, smoking mess, what with over 400 active forest fires in British Columbia. Despite the closest one being 100 km away, some of it is here. Oh, and me with the first hangover in a forever or so, due to a beautiful wedding Saturday, Sensei called things to a halt early, for which I was thankful for once. But before then...
Dylan was working on "whatever" from katatedori, and I was not able to spot a favourite technique. That's unusual and good; jiyu waza is three belt tests away from his current rank! We also worked a bit on shomenuchi awase (awasu?), and I wish it was part of the regular classes instead of just learned by implication. James sensei offered us some tips for expressing more energy.
At the Sunday open practice, the informal rule is, within limits, block incorrect technique. I helped Alex with katadori nikyo, and he kept on moving straight back instead of off the line on the initial movement. After few of those, I decided to 'let' him do it and showed what anyone outside the dojo would do: come straight forward. I am easily half again his weight, and being bulldozed by me shaking my head "nope" surprised him. The second time, he was less surprised and tried to apply the wrist lock anyways, only to discover than you can't when your hands are crumpled up to your sternum. So he got another "nope" out of me, along with a kokyu ho back stretch. The third time, bless his persevering heart, he tried going straight back and thengetting off the line and doing a... a... I guess judoka would call it de ashi harai, but don't quote me on that, it was behind the knee instead of behind my ankle. and the main reason it didn't work was because I hadn't lost my balance. He's inventive, for sure. But still, "nope."
And then he thought about it for a moment and proceded to do it right four times in a row, the way that sensei showed. The wrist lock was good enough that I wasn't even tempted to do a reversal!
It may be second hand, but it's still pride. I'll take it.

D-day -3 weeks before my exam. As if I could even forget that. Especially when sensei approached my group just before practice, pointed at the announcement poster on the wall, then at me, then again at the poster and shouted at me something along the line of “soon! very soon!”. *screech* And then *of course* my reaction time was too slow, way too slow on shomenuchi ikkyo omote (suwari waza). Sensei threw me by the shoulder pushed me gently forward to show me how much faster I was supposed to move. And *of course* my footwork on ura (all techniques on suwari waza) was a mess was approximate at best. If our grandmaster requests more than two suwari waza in a row, I’m in big trouble, because my leg endurance could be much better.
*sigh*
Cherry on top of the cake, my French sempai did it again at open mat practice later. What better way to make me lose focus/snort than to sing Darth Vader’s theme under his breath just as I was failing miserably struggling with the amplitude of my hip moves on sankyo ura...? Guess who was just behind me?
Tumblr media
... and he was NOT pleased with what he saw. *gahhh*
Thankfully, he left me alone afterwards and went away to torture other poor souls to give mock-up 5th and 4th kyu exams to a few kohai.

As a result, tonight can be summed up like this:

blending
my 20180628 class
Worked on blending by doing just entries in randori. Did some shomenuchi ikkyo both kihon and awase. Also did ryotedori tenchinage kihon and awase. Getting off the line is good, but don’t forget to catch uke’s center as you do so. Allowing for experimentation is always interesting.

Sick vs. badass
I honestly never expected to break someone's shoulder during practice, especially since we train to explicitly prevent injuries during kata. It's a sickening sound. I have rarely been so horrified as when I applied... enough force to remove Big C's scapula from the clavicular joint. I honestly can't recommend the experience. However, his reaction was 100% calm and focused and quiet because, apparently, it happens all the time ever since the incident. He directed me to (i) calm down, it's only dislocated, and (ii) hold his arm in a weird way (kinda like yonkyo) and then he moved himself in a weird way and there was another deeply disturbing sound and he stood up ready to continue practice. While I'm nearly throwing up and weak in the knees because I think I've damaged him permanently, big C is like "if you don't practice the technique, this shomenuchi will hit a your head. I still love you, let's go." The people practicing next to us might well not have noticed something major had just happened. Maybe they thought I was nauseous and dizzy because of the heat and not drinking enough water. I did manage to get back up, though. So, big C gets 11/10 for badassery this week. After class, we had a discussion about the past injury that led to this particular situation, and about ways to prevent it from popping out again. Josh (bless his gaint yudansha heart) overheard us and showed an alternate seated pin for nikyo that keeps the joint pressed instead of stretched. "Look, I'm still shaking. Weird." -KC
