Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media

Kasuga Taisha's famous lanterns  are lit only twice a year, for the Setsubun Mantōrō in early February and the Chūgen Mantōrō on August 14–15, while those in the Fujinami-no-ya Hall glimmer year round.

Day 9 Nara (2)
So, Todai-ji. Gigantic buddha...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's hard to convey it's size in a photo, but yes, it was huge. The temple and the grounds around it are really pretty. Not sure what else to say about it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
From there we fed a few more deer, then headed to Kasuga Taisha. I think my husband was actually starting to get a bit tired of being dragged from place to place at this point. (Oops?) Not my fault he did not prepare himself and failed to bring himself some sort of lunch! (Is it?) I assumed he realized we'd be away from the restaurants while in Nara park... (and he didn't want udon, the one proper food we could get.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, with a hungry husband in tow, we visited Kasuga Taisha. So pretty! So many lantarns. It's too bad they clearly aren't meant to light up. Looked inside, completely empty. Made for candles it seems. But they did have this one dark room to show people what it would look like to have the lantarns lit up.
Originally I had planned to go to Wakasuyama from here, but my feet were already hurting and climbing a mountain did not seem a good idea. So, instead we headed back to the station. Dropped by the McD for some lunch... I mean, we needed something quick and my husband doesn't seem much of a fan of simple Japanese dishes.
Then we had some fun at the arcade and gacha town near the station... for some reason they thought it was a good idea to play "We wish you a merry christmas" on repeat. And their crane games are really righed, like every places. Perfectly grabbed toys suddenly dropping to the floor... It's really no fun anymore.
After a bit we headed back to the station and returned to Osaka.

Kasuga Taisha
Just some of my favourite pictures I've taken around Kasuga Taisha. Trying to keep the info-dumping to the minimum here, I just find this place so facinating it's difficult to help myself.
Tumblr media
A handsome young fellow very politely asking for a shika senbei. His request was granted.

A deer by some stone lanterns. There are 2000 of these stone lanterns en route to the shrine, and another 1000 hanging bronze lanterns at the shrine, so 3000 together. The number is important, because Kasuga Taisha also has 3000 branch shrines all over Japan. The lanterns have been donated to the shrine over a very long period, so they are all different ages and have different designs. Many picture deer.
Tumblr media
This bronze statue of the sacret deer is a very new addition, it only just went up in December 2023 to commemorate renovations at the Wakamiya Shrine (one of the auxillary shrines of the Kasuga Taisha that go through the same 20 year renovation cycle as the main shrine). In it's back the deer carries a sakaki tree and a mirror.
Tumblr media
Even the chozuya is shaped like a deer.
Tumblr media
The middle gate. The vermillion is brilliant against the green of the plant life. Behind this gate are the four sanctuaries for the four kami enshrined here.
Tumblr media
The giant cedar tree is 800-1000 years old. You can also see the other smaller tree behind it, for which a hole has been made through the roof ot the building so it can continue to grow.
Tumblr media
A few of the bronze lanterns.
Tumblr media
A baby. Much too young and shy to want any crackers, it's best to keep your distance with these little ones as they are quite easily overwhelmed. Mom is usually close by, and will not hesitate to attack you if she thinks you are harassing her baby.

Kasuga Taisha Shrine Famous places in Nara
Kasuga Taisha Shrine in Nara is one of the historical shrines that represents the ancient capital of Nara. Built in the early 8th century, it held an important position as a guardian of the nation and an object of worship for the imperial family. Kasuga Taisha Shrine enshrines three deities: Yamato Takeru no Mikoto, Takehasa Susano no Mikoto, and Takeminakata no Mikoto. is enshrined. Among the Shinto gods, it is especially known as a ``god whose divine object is a torii gate,'' and it is also famous as a shrine of torii gates. In the precincts, there is a lion statue called ``Kashiwashi,'' which resembles a deer, and its name comes from the deer that lived in this area. In addition, Kasuga Taisha Shrine's Shinto Garden holds traditional Shinto rituals, such as Kagura performances in spring and autumn. In particular, the Kasuga Taisha Annual Festival is held on the third Sunday of March every year, and is known as a festival that attracts many worshipers and tourists.
