In the summer of 1779 Viola Olafsson passed away, leaving her four daughters behind.
Sadly her adopted daughter Aurora had moved far away, and was unable to attend the funeral.
The funeral was held in the local church, and Viola was buried next to her late husband Abraham Nilsson.
Her oldest daughter, Karolina, was now left as the inheritor of the family - in charge of taking care of her daughter Anna and three younger sisters.
While supporting a family as a widowed woman was not an easy task, Karolina had the support of the rest of her relatives behind her.
Josef and Vilhelm, both heartbroken at the loss of their older sister, were more than willing to help her in financial matters.
Still, the loss of the second oldest daughter to Ingmar Olafsson was a bitter blow to everyone, and she would be greatly missed.

Little Sportacus - another Sportacus themed episode! Sweeett!
The episode begins with Sportacus getting a letter from ten year old Tommy - 'What stuff did you do when you were ten?' He says his favourite game was dodgeball! (When I was ten, I loved dodgeball too!!)
Then at the end of the game (he cartwheels and flips and rolls to dodge the ball, awesome!) he catches the ball in his hand. Meanwhile, Robbie is in his lair, shaking with a bowl of popcorn in his hand, yelling 'It wasn't me!!' Possibly, having a nightmare about getting framed? Then he wakes up, and says that was a great nap. He grabs some chocolate.
But he is distracted by the sound of a rubber ball.. bouncing. Stephanie is walking with a basketball and she stops to tell her uncle what a wonderful day it is. Milford says it's a great day to do some yard work.
This is the exact type of scene to have 'Upphaf' from Latabæ as background music, and it does.. until Ziggy rides his bicycle without his training wheels. Stephanie tells him to use his brakes, and whaddya know? He hasn't learned how to do that yet. So, he's in trouble. And we all know who to call when Ziggy is in trouble. Sportacus - whose crystal beeps. Ziggy is headed straight for the ice-cream stand, and he doesn't worry. He does the exact opposite until he gets a bit closer. Sportacus throws an anchor's hook up to the airship.
Then he attaches the other side of the anchor to a hook of the ice-cream stand. Then with no effort (come on, he's Magnus Scheving) he LIFTS UP THE ICE-CREAM STAND. But that's not it - Ziggy's still riding, so Sportacus goes down the rope. Ziggy is about to crash into Milford's bush when Sportacus stops the bike.. with his yoyo.
Then Sporty aerobics over to him and checks if he's all good. Robbie decides to use his periscope, but a running Stephanie startles him and he hides. Milford asks why Ziggy was going so fast. He was trying to ride his bicycle, but he says he is just too little. Sportacus says that you learn more when you're little. After he leaves, Robbie wishes Sportacus could be a teeny tiny child so he didn't know anything. But that's impossible. Or is it? So, he goes to build his newest invention, and it can change your age.
He tests it on a bird and brings him back to an EGG. That's like bringing Sportacus back to an fetus - that won't work. So he adjusts it a bit and now it works perfectly. Meanwhile, Sportacus is doing some skipping from here and there. Robbie's disguise is.. a bush. Behind him. Wow. Sportacus hears the leaves rustling and stops for a few seconds, then continues. Anyways, once Sporty is distracted, Robbie tries to zap Sportacus.. but he keeps moving side to side. Then he finally stays in one place, and bam! He is ten years old again.
Fun fact - Little Sportacus is voiced by a girl. Anyways, he runs over to Ziggy and asks for his help. But he doesn't believe him until Ziggy says he has a super-secret nickname only Sportacus knows. Then Sportacus whispers it to him - 'Mr. Fluffy Bunny Pants'. I don't know why that was kept a secret - if I got a rabbit I'd name it that! Also shocked Ziggy is even funnier then confused Sportacus.
Ziggy thinks the rest of the kids would freak out if they saw Sportacus like this, so Ziggy goes to Pixel's house and asks for some drip to borrow. It is delivered in an orange package. So, anyways, Sportacus puts it on, and Ziggy tells him to just act like himself. Then he does a 360 spin and that super cool hero pose with his arms. Ziggy then corrects himself - act like a kid. Then he occupies him with a ball so he is bound to do the exact opposite of what Ziggy JUST said.
I love this season, but it seems that Ziggy doesn't think enough sometimes. He learns the lessons, moves on and does something ridiculous. Well, this is only one dumb Ziggy moment I can name. He's cool the rest of the season. Anyways, he goes to start figuring out what happened to Sportacus. Meanwhile, Stephanie spots Sportacus just standing on the court. She asks who he is and he does the 360 epic superhero spin xd1!!!!111oneone. He says Spob as he already started to say his real name (but forgor he wasn't supposed to). The two shake hands, and Stephanie wants to play a game. Spob says he is out of practice.
Stephanie passes the ball to him which nearly makes him fall (come on, Sportacus!!) then he passes it back. Stephanie starts dribbling the ball, and then they perform Time to Play. As the song ends, Stephanie is suspicious of how good Spob plays. She rips out a page of her diary and it flies away. Sportacus is on the move - he does the signature move, cartwheels and jumps to catch it in mid-air.
As Stephanie figures out it's Sportacus, Ziggy comes riding on the court. He accidentally says 'Hi, Sportacus!' and he corrects himself by saying gibberish (genuinely funny!!). Anyways, after they clear up that Steph knows Spob is Sportacus, she asks how it happened. Sportacus said if only someone was around when it happened. Ziggy says there is a way to find out so they go to Pixel's house. Stephanie tells them it's Sportacus but they don't believe her. He power jumps to prove it is him.
So then Ziggy asks Pixel to check the cameras earlier today. They see the bush behind them move before Sportacus is zapped. They say they have to find out where that bush is from. Using Pixel's drone camera. The drone is controlled with a remote control, and the kids see a leave trail. So, they follow it and it leads to Robbie's lair. Stephanie follows it and she mistakes it for a dead end, until she leans on the door and falls down.
She gets up, climbs the ladder and opens up the chute to Robbie's lair. Meanwhile, Robbie himself is deciding to celebrate the success of his plan with a nap. But the kids have showed up. Pixel's drone is hovered down into the lair. Another trail of leaves leads to.. Robbie. Napping. Ziggy wants to control the drone so he snatches it from Pixel and gets it stuck in between two of Robbie's microwaves. Sportacus calls for a rope from his airship and decides to go down. He ties it to his waist and Stephanie holds it. He dives down!
Sportacus unties himself. Meanwhile, the drone starts shaking along with the table. On the table is that little baby egg. It almost rolls off but Sportacus dives to catch it. Even when he is facing a serious problem he still saves someone, no matter how small their trouble is. The dive wakes up Robbie, and he starts chasing him around the table. Then Sportacus kicks the drone.
The kick is reminiscent of Bruce Lee's flying kick in 'The Big Boss'. No surprise as Sportacus re-enacts Lee's nunchuck routine from Enter the Dragon in 'Double Trouble' and 'Great Greens'. Maggi admits he watched Lee as a child. Anyways, the drone starts flying towards Robbie's face and he falls to the ground. He continues to chase him after he gets up. Using his wits (and the throwing of a baby egg to distract him), Sportacus flips onto the platform. Robbie asks how he did that, and he said he practiced. The kids cheer. Robbie runs up the staircase and Sportacus walks on the rails. Robbie dives to catch him, Sportacus flips, and Robbie falls. Epic and also kinda funny.
Sportacus sees his clothes in one of the pods (iiittt's the LazyPod Podcast!! XD. Go listen to it though, Mark Valenti hosts it and it's epic) and he figures there must be a way to get it. Oh yeah, Robbie stole them while they were performing 'Time to Play'. He pulls the lever and is back in costume. Sportacus flips off to the machine but Robbie blocks him. Then after he cartwheels back Robbie says it'll destruct in ten seconds. Sportacus says that's all he needs. Then he throws the egg, slides under Robbie's legs, and presses the button. Fricking liar. He needed TWELVE seconds! But time is Lazy in LazyTown, so technically he needed eight seconds. Missing the point - he is back to normal again. Sportacus notices it's going to blow. Robbie comes flying out the lair!
And he lands on Milford's bush. Everyone notices it's Robbie Rotten. Anyways, probably because of the power of one apple bite, Sportacus is a-okay. He gives Pixel the drone. Ziggy tells Sportacus he learnt an important lesson today - you're never too little to learn and if a bush comes at you with a fishing rod and an umbrella, run. (I checked behind myself to see if there was a bush with a fishing rod and umbrella. No joke. Why am I like this?) They all laugh and sing Bing Bang. Robbie is still chillin when the egg hatches.
The bird says 'Mama!' and Robbie says 'ME???' then he pats the bird (in the extended version of the episode). Then a cartoony circle closes in on the bird and fades into the credits.
10/10 - I liked that episode a lot!! Season two has started amazingly. Two episodes in a row with a full rating.

Norwegian / old norse names and places
Every now and then I come across a book, movie, TV-series, fanfic, game or whatever, that mention a fictional "Norwegian" or "norse" place or person, and it just sounds so wrong it makes me either cringe or ROFL. Really. I still haven't recovered from the 1995 X-files episode, "Død Kalm", which took us to the port of "Tildeskan" where we met "Henry Trondheim", "Halverson" and "Olafsson". Hopefully this list will keep others from being that “creative” with names. :)
Common names for places, towns and villages in Norway
These names are very generic and suitable for a place, village or town anywhere (and pretty much any time) in Norway. Mix and match prefixes with suffixes for diversity. Bonus: All of these can also be used as surnames. Name (meaning) - usage
Nes (headland, cape, ness) - Standalone Bø (fenced-in field on a farm) - Standalone Fjell (mountain) - Standalone or prefix/suffix: Fjell- / -fjell Haug (small hill / large mound) - Standalone or prefix/suffix: Haug- / -haug Vik, Viken, Vika (inlet, the inlet, the inlet) - Standalone or prefix/suffix: Vik- / -viken / -vika Ås, Åsen (hill, the hill (larger than "Bakken")) - Standalone or prefix/suffix: Dal, Dalen (valley, the valley) - Standalone or prefix/suffix: Berg (small mountain) - Standalone or prefix/suffix: Berg(s)- / -berg Sand (sand) - Standalone or prefix/suffix: Sand- / -sand Strand (beach) - Standalone or prefix/suffix: Strand- / -strand Li (hill) - Standalone or prefix/suffix: Li- / -li Gran (spruce) - Standalone or prefix: Gran- Bratt (steep) - prefix only: Bratt- Myr (bog, mire) - prefix only: Myr- Neset, Nesset (the headland, the cape, the ness) - Standalone or suffix: -neset / -nesset Odden (foreland, headland) - Standalone or suffix: -odden Våg (cove, bay) - Standalone or suffix: -våg Lund (grove) - Standalone or suffix: -lund Sund (sound, strait) - Standalone or suffix: -sund Skog (forest) prefix/suffix: Skog- / -skog Øy (island) prefix/suffix: Øy- / -øy øya (the island) - suffix only: -øya bakken (the hill) - suffix only: -bakken gard / gård / gården (farm / farm / the farm) - suffix only: -gard / -gård / -gården elv, -elva (river, the river) suffix only: -elv / -elva stad (old word for town/place) suffix only: -stad vannet (the lake) - suffix only: -vannet

Common Norwegian surnames (contemporary)
Heredatory surnames didn't become mandatory in Norway until 1923. Many took the name from the farm or place they lived, or just changed their primary patronyms into hereditary patronyms. Example: Helgessønn/Helgesdatter (son of Helge / daughter of Helge) became Helgesen.

Names usage Double names, like Ragnhild Johanne or Ole Martin are common in Norway. Just keep them as two names and don't use "-", and you'll be safe, even if it ends up a tongue twister. Using only one of two given names is also common practice.
In Norway everyone is on a first name basis. Students call teachers and other kids' parents by their first name, workers call their boss by their first name, we call our Prime Minister by her first name (journalists will use her title when speaking to her though). Some senior citizens still use surnames and titles when speaking of or to people their own age.
There are some exceptions. For example, a doctor may be referred to as Dr. Lastname when we speak of them, but first name is used when speaking to them. A priest is "the priest" when speaking of him/her and their first name is used when spaking to them. In the millitary only surnames (and ranks) are used. If you meet Harald, the King of Norway, in an official setting you will refer to him as "Kongen" (the king). If you run into him at the gas station, or while hiking, he is "Harald".
If you don't know someone's name it is okay to use their title, or just say "you".

Bynames Bynames, or nicknames, could be neutral, praising or condescending. Usually bynames described a person's
body, bodyparts, bodily features
age
kinship and descent
territorial origin
knowledge, belief, spirituality
clothing, armour
occupation, social position
nature
Examples: Eirik Blodøks (Eirik Blood-Axe), Gammel-Anna (old Anna), Halte-Ása (limping Ása). I suggest that you stick with English for bynames, or use (relatively) modern language if you are writing in Norwegian.
Surnames
Surnames weren't really a thing until 1923 when they became mandatory. Before 1923 patronyms (son/daughter of) were used, and the name of the farm you lived on was often added as an address.
For instance: Helgi Eiriksøn (Helgi, son of Eirik), who lived at the farm called Vollr (grass field), would be called Helgi Eiriksøn Vollr. If he moved to the farm called Haugr his name would change to Helgi Eiriksøn Haugr.
Patronyms
Men: Use father's first name and add -sen /-son /-sønn Women: Use father's first name and add -dotter / -dottir / -datter
Farm names
Farm names were usually relevant and derived from either the location, a nearby landmark, nature or from occupation. I suggest you stick with the modern forms for farm names.
Old Norse (meaning) - modern Bekkr (stream) - Bekk, Bekken Dalr (valley) - Dal, Dahl Horn (horn) - Horn Vollr (field) - Vold, Volden Lundr (grove) - Lund
The list of common names for places/villages/towns is still valid, although the spelling is modern. Just keep it simple and make "clever" combos based on meaning.

Lockdown musings from other countries - world news
https://liveindiatimes.com/lockdown-musings-from-other-countries-world-news/
When I called my friend Karl Olafsson in Iceland, he was up on the wooden roof of his house, repairing it. It was a clear sunny day, and he said he was making the most of his time under lockdown. He’s not the only thing to have gone through the roof. “Bicycle sales are up like crazy. We’re all biking to enjoy the outdoors and get some exercise. The youngsters, who normally fly away to Copenhagen or to NY for holidays are discovering their own lakes, waterfalls and volcanoes and absolutely loving it.’
One of Karl Olafsson’s bi-eyed whiteSiberian huskies in Iceland.
Karl is the co-founder of Nordic Luxury, a travel company, and over the last few years they’ve added sleigh-journeys pulled by huskies. He’s been breeding rare white Siberian huskies. ‘The bi-eyed ones are particularly rare, with a blue and brown eye each. At night, the light makes them shine red and green.’ While playing with them has been a lot of fun (you can visit them on www.huskyiceland.com), Karl and the huskies are hoping to get back to business with the arrival of visitors. ‘When folks are allowed in June 15th onwards, they must show a clean bill of health from their own authorities, else test for Covid, or self-quarantine for 2 weeks. They’ll be asked to install the Rakning C-19 contagion tracing app on their phones.
With summer around the corner, Icelanders understandably want to salvage the tourism the high season draws. ‘I’m enjoying my quarantine a lot.’ says Flavia Liz di Paolo, an urban activist and trendsetter working in the luxury-tourism space from Sao Paolo, Brazil. She’s been walking up a storm, over two and a half hours at a stretch sometimes, as she paces in her apartment, talking to friends and family. She’s been taking self-care classes with a nutritionist coach who has helped her lose weight by giving up carbs and sugar, and by getting her to sit down by a pretty table-setting to enjoy her meals slowly rather than swallowing them hastily on the run. She’s been receiving reiki every morning, writing her biography (for herself) and creaming her face as she watches Brazilian soap operas at night. ‘While most people in affluent neighbourhoods are obeying lockdown rules, in lower income areas such as the favelas, commerce is open and people are out and about, trading, playing football and meeting each other without masks.’ She’s noticed that there’s much less dust, and the views are prettier with more birds in the trees outside. While she’s amazed at how quickly nature has bounced back, she feels ‘people are ignorant and selfish and likely to go back to living exactly as they did before.’
Kuban Karashev tutors English and guides in Kyrgyzstan where Covid cases have been relatively few, and the strict lockdown will be relaxed soon, starting with the opening of little shops and businesses. Their kids are home as school is closed till September. ‘Even in a little house you can find lots of things to do’ he says. His wife has been planting in pots and making curtains and he’s been cleaning up, even wiping down the wallpapered walls. He’s learning to speak Chinese, and they walk outside in the evenings. ‘The air is fresher, and it’s green everywhere. Cherries, strawberries and apricots are starting to make an appearance. The village folk in the mountainous and by the lakes are affected less as theirs is a local economy. Soon they’ll be taking the livestock to higher pasture and setting up their circular tents as usual, and hopefully by the time the apples and walnuts are ready to harvest for trade in September, this will all be behind us.’ From what he reads, fights will likely start in July and tourism will resume by September. But it’ll be tough, as the Kazakhs and Russians have suffered Covid as well as a drop in oil prices. Tajikistan has only just reported Covid cases this week, while Turkmenistan, (like North Korea), has reported none, he says with an amused tone, for similar reasons.
Flavia Liz in her apartment in Sao Paolo
Elizabeth Feroy from the pristine Lofoten Islands in northern Norway, says ‘It’s very different here as we even put restrictions on visitors from the south of the country. Schools and businesses are closed but luckily there’s plenty of nature here and we’re allowed to use it in max groups of 5. I’ve been using my extra time to decorate my surfboard, draw, paint, fixing my worn-out wool socks and mittens. I’m also more of an introvert so for me being at home gives me peace and I can focus on all the creative things I love. On Tuesdays my friends and I dance outdoors with headphones and a shared playlist. The seasonal fisheries have been going on as normal, but this has been devastating for local economy with so many people working in tourism.’
Ramin Khosfian’s photo of the barely-peopled Naksh-e-Jahan Square in Esfahan Iran
Ramin Khosfian notices that the massive main square in Esfahan, the prettiest Iranian city, is virtually empty as he cycles by on a 70 km ride. The grassy plains between the mosques and palace are usually enlivened by families enjoying a picnic on a summer’s eve and visitors admiring the architectural details. “The virus came to Qom first, likely via two Chinese businessmen after the new year, and has taken 7000 lives. His wife, Zainab, who is doing her residency in radiology says the cases have dropped compared to the first two weeks. ‘Staying home,’ Ramin noticed, ‘people are sleeping in, and having only two meals a day, a late brunch and early dinner.’
Domestic airports are open and active and trains and busses are now running, but there are no travellers. ‘Human beings are thinking only of themselves, destroying nature and jungles and wildlife, and if we continue the wrong we’re doing, we’ll have another reminder soon. But sadly, it is human nature to forget quickly.’

@11cleyva honey I love SO MUCH that the cockatoo is Stefan's baby!!!!!!😘😘😘😘😘🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
de-aged Sportacus appreciation post
I really enjoyed this episode for a couple of reasons:
Sport has always been a strong and talented little bastard (look at dem moves)
Sport can’t lie to save his life ie. he introduces himself as “Spob”
Sport is very brave even when faced with an unthinkable scenario
Sport has always been shaped like a friend. Him and Stephanie would have been best friends if grown up together
Sport continues to be a cheeky shit to Robbie “10 seconds is all I need…I guess I was wrong, I only needed 8”
Bonus:
Stefan brought his birb to work

Review of “Debussy-Rameau.” Vikingur Olafsson, piano. Deutsche Grammophon 479 7701
By Karl W. Nehring
Having previously enjoyed and reviewed recordings by Icelandic pianist Vikingur Olafsson featuring the music of Bach and Philip Glass, I have been most eager to audition his latest release, which features music from two French composers who were separated temporally by a century and a half, the well-known and hugely influential Claude Debussy (1862-1918) and the much less well-known (at least in our modern era) Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764). Vikingur ("Olafsson" is a patronymic, so it is appropriate to refer to the pianist in what might appear to be an overly familiar manner) is a remarkable pianist who carefully considers the program for his recordings. As he explains in his liner notes, he was familiar with Debussy's keyboard music for as long as he can remember, but did not encounter the music of Rameau until his student days in New York, where he heard a 1951 recording by the late Russian pianist Emil Gilels of a Rameau composition and was impressed by how well it seemed to lend itself to being played on a modern piano.

who is spob i must know
In Episode 6 of Season 2 (or Episode 2, depending on your source) of LazyTown, a popular children’s TV show that was filmed in Iceland, Robbie Rotten, portrayed by Stefán Karl Stefánsson, the villain of LazyTown, who wanted nothing but the children of LazyTown to be lazy again, hatched up a scheme that seemed utterly foolproof. He would turn the town’s hero, Sportacus, portrayed by Magnús Örn Eyjólfsson Scheving, into a child, since as a child, he wouldn’t be able to do any of the things he could do since he says he learned all of the things he knows as a kid
So Robbie turns Sportacus into a little kid, portrayed by David Kristjan Olafsson (Spob is also voiced by a girl, Thordis Elva Thorvaldsdottir). Sportacus retains his memory and is trying to figure out how this happened. One of the children, Ziggy, puppeteered by Guðmundur Þór Kárason, sees Sportacus and initially doesn’t believe him when he says that it’s him.
Ziggy goes to find him clothes that actually fit, since he is still wearing his adult clothes and are too big for him. They decide to keep his de-aging a secret so the children don’t freak out. While Ziggy is gone, Stephanie, who during this season is portrayed by Julianna Rose Mauriello, sees Sportacus as a kid and asks who he is. Sportacus almost introduces himself as “Sportacus”, but remembers he’s supposed to be keeping it a secret.
So instead, he says “No, no. I mean Spob.”
Then you get these gems of screenshots I would fucking die for Spob
Fun fact: My URL came to be when I said to my friend “I’d trust Little Sportacus to be president more than Trump” and thought to myself “Spob for president”

Signhild didn't have a lot of time to reflect on the distance between her and Ingmar as she began settling in to life at Olafsson farm.
She wasn't unused to hard labour by any stretch of the imagination, but she had never before had to care for quite so many people all at once and her life felt as if it was being swallowed up by a proverbial whirlwind of activity that she was unsure she could ever get used to.
A lot of time went to caring for the children, of course. The littlest ones required a lot of her attention.
They all needed food and basic care, but beyond that they also needed devotion and love to fill the void from their lost mother. Signhild made sure to make it a habit to try and interact with them all as much as possible, and to tuck in each little child at night before she herself went to bed.
The cooking demanded a lot of attention as well. Signhild wasn't a huge fan of cooking but she was now in charge of ensuring that the entire family were fed: that they had breakfast early in the mornings before they began their chores and dinner in the evening as everyone returned back to the house.
The older children made it clear that they didn't think Signhild's cooking lived up to their expectations. She could have reprimanded them for their attitude, but she decided to try a different tactic and get to know her husband better by sometimes involving him in the cooking process.
She thought this could impress the children and, hopefully, win some of Ingmar's affection.
When she wasn't devoting herself to the children and the cooking she had the rest of the house to worry about. The laundry in particular felt like it would never end, especially when the late autumn rain storms made it almost impossible to get anything dry.
Still, Signhild didn't feel as though life on the farm was too terrible. She had her own ways of entertaining herself when she had a moment or two to herself.
A guilty pleasure of hers was the kids' swingset, which she liked to sit and swing on in the early mornings when no one else was around.

Part 1 I Part 2
"Good lord," Signhild said after having listened to Jonas' explanation, "He can't be running around in the woods now, there's a storm outside! The rain's practically coming down sideways."
Signhild rushed outside to try and call for Karl, but the sound of the wind, rain and thunder drowned out her voice.
Ingmar grabbed his hat and looked to Jonas.
"Go get Ulf, tell him to put his hat on and come help immediately!" He considered putting his overcoat on, but if his son was out in the woods in this weather then there was no time to spare, they had to go out and search for him.
He walked out to his wife.
"You stay with the children, me and Ulf will go out and look for him."
But though they called out into the storm, braving the brunt of the weather, they couldn't seem to find Karl.
Ulf called and called until he was hoarse, looking desperately for his little brother.
Ingmar tried to search the woods as best he could, but soon the thunder turned into lightning and he and Ulf were forced to return home without Karl.
"We'll gather a force of men to search tomorrow," Ingmar said as he came home, dripping wet and freezing, "I'm sure we'll find him somewhere. I'm sure he's fine. He has to be."
Early the next day Ingmar and Ulf gathered a couple of men from the village to go looking for Karl around the woods. To try and drown out their worries they tried joking about how much they'd be able to laugh about all this when Karl was older.
A while into the search Ingmar was looking up different trees to see if his son had climbed any when Ulf came running over.
"Dad! Dad!" Ulf waved his arms. "They found him. They've found him."
Ingmar breathed a sigh of relief and smiled at his son, but the smile fell as he saw the look in Ulf's eyes.
"The storm got him," Ulf's eyes were red-rimmed, "I'm sorry. I'm sorry. He's dead."

"Karl?" Ingmar said, calling his second oldest son over. "I have some great news we would like to tell you."
It was a quiet and rainy day and most of the family were outside working, but Karl had briefly come inside and Ingmar figured now was as good a time as any.
"Sure, what is it?" Karl said with a nice smile that tugged at Ingmar's heartstrings. Karl was often known for his trouble making tendencies, especially when it came to aggravating Signhild and Viola, but he was still just a boy of nine and someone Ingmar loved dearly. Furthermore he had moments and days where he was so very happy and sweet.
"Well," Ingmar said and looked over to Signhild, "Me and Signhild have been talking, and we think we've figured out a great opportunity that would suit you."
Ingmar turned to look at his son...
... and was surprised to see him looking very upset.
"Absolutely not!" Karl said. "I refuse."
"But you haven't even heard about--"
"You're not gonna get rid of me! No way!"
"Come now, Karl, you haven't even heard what your father has to say," Signhild tried to interject.
"No!" Karl screamed. "I refuse to leave here and you can't make me!"
"Karl," Ingmar said with growing concern and aggravation, "You don't even know--"
"If you're talking about the stupid plan your wench cooked up to sell me off the brewers then yes I can know! And I refuse--"
Signhild nearly stood up from her seat.
"That is quite enough of that young man!"
"No!" Karl put a hand out. "It's quite enough of you! I'm not going to stay here and listen to this one moment longer!"
And with that he got up and ran out.
Ingmar would have paid attention to where Karl went, but he was so busy comforting poor Signhild and stewing in anger at the behaviour of his son that he hardly paid any attention to it. He figured the boy would run out to the cow shed or the swings and calm down before coming back.
But as the evening came the rain was coming down harder and there was thunder in the distance.
"Karl never came for dinner," Signhild said, "Do you know if anyone's seen him or know where he is? Surely he'd be back by now."
"I think I might know," Jonas piped up, "But you must promise I'm not in trouble."
Ingmar felt dread settle into his stomach.
"Go on," he said, "You can tell me. I promise you're not in trouble."
Jonas began to explain, and as he did Ingmar began to feel more and more worried.
"He said he was gonna make it seem like Signhild maybe hurt him in retaliation," Jonas confessed, "But he said he was only gonna be out in the woods and pretend to be hurt, nothing more, I promise.... Well, aside from breaking Signhild's fiddle."

Karl felt like he had it pretty good.
Sure, he sometimes had a disagreement or two with his step-mother. Usually ending in a time-out or two, but it wasn't all bad. He'd eventually be needed about the farm anyway and he'd get to walk away without any long term consequences.
Some nights, when the weather was warm and all their chores done, his father would gather up him and his younger brothers and take them to the lake to fish.
During the summers they got to stay out really late fishing as the weather permitted it, and it wasn't too bad except for the collection of mosquito bites they'd aquire while doing so.
His younger brothers weren't too great at fishing, but Karl was and he knew his father was really proud of him.
It felt nice to spend the evenings with his father and brothers, no nagging step-mums in sight. Sometimes Karl got to stay out a little later than the rest of his brothers too since he was older and more responsible and better at fishing and probably his father's favourite too.
One evening Karl came in from his chores to find Jonas waiting up. This was unusual since Jonas loved to sleep as much as he possibly could if he could get away with it.
"What's up?" Karl asked. He briefly worried if maybe there was some monster under Jonas' bed, but Jonas seemed too calm for that.
"I heard mum and dad talking."
"You mean our step-mother?" Karl corrected. "They talk a lot, what's so special this time?"
"They were talking about you. They're gonna send you off!"
"What! They'd never."
"They were!" Jonas insisted. "Cross my heart and hope to die. I promise."
"Alright, I believe you," Karl was already trying to come up with a plan in his head, "Why? Where to?"
"To be a brewer is what Signhild said."
"That Signhild," Karl sighed, "And they've decided this?"
"Well, no," Jonas admitted, "Dad said he was gonna think."
"Alright, well don't worry," Karl relaxed a little, "I'll come up with a plan real quick and before you know it we'll have sorted this out."
"You promise?" Jonas suddenly pouted. "They're not gonna break us up?"
"I promise," Karl said, feeling very confident, "There's no way they could separate us from each other. No way at all."
Karl went to sleep that night feeling happy and confident as he formed a million different plans in his mind.
Little did he know there were dark clouds brewing on the horizon.

Ingmar was getting really fed up with Viola and Karl's constant fighting.
He had hoped the passage of time would dull the flames of their fights, but there seemed to be no real end to them. Admittedly he blamed himself for not putting a foot down earlier. Trying to make up for it he now tried to repeatedly hand out time outs for either child if he heard them insult the other, but it seemed to have no real effect.
One evening as he came into the bedroom, before he had time to take his coat off, Signhild waved him over.
"Could you take a seat, dear?"
"Sure? What's the matter?"
"I've had a thought," she said, "What if we let Karl become an apprentice?"
"How so? And to whom?"
"Well, you see, I was thinking the other day about how we might solve this issue of the kids fighting all the time. Now, Karl and Viola clearly need some time apart and Viola's needed at home. Furthermore, Karl is almost ten now and a capable and responsible boy."
"That's all well and good but--"
"So what if he became a brewer? We know them well after all, and I know for a fact that they have enough room for him at theirs. Additionally it wouldn't be too far away and he can still come visit and be visited often."
Ingmar hesitated. He had to admit it was a good idea and Signhild was bringing up some very good points, but it still hurt his heart a little to think of his second oldest boy no longer being in the house.
Signhild leaned over and kissed him.
"You don't have to decide just yet, love," she said, "I'll get ready for bed now and let you think on it."

Christmas 1731 ought to have been a rather somber affair, but Signhild decided to pull out all the tricks in the book in order to impress her new family.
She threw together a large feast for Christmas dinner, consisting of eel-head pie and roasted pheasant.
Afterwards she let the children open their presents for that year.
Some, like Viola, were very happy with their gift.
Others were significantly less so.
It turned out Karl's gift had been replaced by someone with a lump of coal, an act that nearly destroyed Christmas all together as him and Viola began arguing over it.
Signhild and Ingmar managed to calm everyone down eventually, and once everyone was in a better state of mind Signhild invited them outside to play a Christmas song or two on her fiddle.
