“Oda pounded and Hashiba kneaded", but there’s no Tokugawa to eat the mochi

In Kanramachi in Gunma there is a garden called the Rakusan’en 楽山園, designated as a national Place of Scenic Beauty in 2000. This garden was believed to have been built by Nobunaga’s second son, Nobukatsu, after being awarded the Obata domain (where Kanramachi now is) by the Tokugawa shogunate. 

In the grounds near where the mansion/residence formerly stood, there is a statue of two people pounding mochi. It looks like an arbitrary statue at a glance, but at closer look, it turns out to be a depiction of the famous satire poem often referred to as the “Tenka mochi poem” (天下餅の歌 Tenka Mochi no Uta):

織田がつき　羽柴がこねし　天下餅　すわりしままに　食うは徳川

“Oda pounded and Hashiba kneaded the Nation mochi, and in the end the one who sat and ate is Tokugawa”

The mochi mortar has 天下 (the nation) engraved into it, and the statue kneading the mochi has a monkey-like face to represent Hideyoshi. Nobunaga looks rather generic, but once you recognise the other two elements, the statue with the large mochi pounding mallet can’t possibly be anyone else.

The curious part here is that there’s no depiction of Ieyasu eating the mochi. I’ve searched around for explanation, but there doesn’t seem to be any provided, either by the city’s official materials or by visitors. The guests seem to be confused, and a lot of them don’t even seem to realise what this was in the first place. One blog says “I think these are vassals/employees?” and another says “I don’t understand what these mochi-making statues are all about”.

Perhaps it’s because that last part of the poem about Ieyasu eating is a slight against him (it was basically saying that he contributed nothing to the unification). Even if the statue is modern and not built in the Tokugawa era, people still tend to avoid making any of the historical figures look bad in official sites and displays like this. 

Why choose this satire poem to build a statue out of to begin with, then, is beyond me. There was a statue of Nobukatsu inside one of the buildings, but this mochi statue doesn’t feel like it made much sense. I felt that it would’ve been more reasonable to create statues of the other lords of the domain (the Oda family was eventually replaced by another clan as the rulers here), or even just Nobunaga alone.

🎃 Behind the scenes Pt.1

Even though there are other divisions and some participants which may not be mentioned above, they’re all invited and have their own parts in this event as well. For examples;

Himari Asami, Hiroshi Sakura, and Suzuran Minazuki (who was on the request of her non-blood-related cousin) were in charge of designing and making costumes with the assistance of three fashion interns; Aimi Miyazaki, Alice Shiroka, and Umi Kobayashi.

Akira Arai, Natsume Kurome, Kururi Yamamura and Queen Card’s team were noted to took part in making props. By the way, Kureha Koizumi was anticipated to participate in this as well but she unexpectedly showed up in the opening show —much to everyone’s surprise.

Reiaki Suzubayashi and Emiko Akaibara showed to work together on helping the cast prepare themselves before entering the stage.

Chiyuri Seiguni was tasked to be the main operator of most special effects on stage via the brief from the real technician, Raiden Otoha since this one had to take his part in the 7th show.

Aiko Mayeda was the D.J. and he got the party started! The 86 band and other musical units associated with other division members were also joined in to provide music for some songs.

Most choreography throughout the shows were designed and coached by Yeong Hajoon, Haruto Morikawa, and Kaede Iwasawa.

The representative of Snowflake Sentinel News, Yoichi Shujo; and the head of a certain publishing-house, Nellie Yukimura were assigned to deliver the details of this event. Please expect more live reports and some tidbits behind the scenes from them.

The foods and drinks in this event were all supplied by the alliance between Luis Kōkyū, Rashaad Young, Harumatsuya shop, and Rikiya farm.

The main sponsors of the previous event are Sigma Inc., Toi Pharmaceutical, and E.L. Medical Co. Therefore, this time it’s the turn of Wonder⇓anD Sound Systems, Arakawa Tech Industries, and the concert venue was organized by the entertainment agency “Kairiku Production” with the cooperation of Queen Card’s league. 

For some reason, a certain division was banned from participating —to be specific, it’s Ginza Division. However, Eiji Noguchi and his family were secretly invited because his children wanted to come.

At first Fusao Ise and Queen card were honored to be the MCs (or the hosts) of this event but because the latter had to ‘prepare’ for her own part in the 11th show, Reika Aichi was surprisingly nominated to take over this role once again alongside Fusao.

At the beginning, all the cast were seen wearing some kind of masquerade mask before their first show started.

Though not every division was present in the 3rd show, there were flags with symbols of each team ever participated in the D.R.B. showing on stage.

For whatever reason, Aranai Norikoru was the one who delivered the line “Toki wo (Shout)!” before the chorus “Kakumei wa matte (The revolution has succeeded)!” was sung by all divisions. Well, someone in the cast seemed visibly displeased with how this turned out.

Despite the 6th show being performed by Yuuya Kanata and Yorii Sakuma, the one who advised them on the lyrics was their senior musician, Ren Nakashima, and the music provider for this show was none other than the 86 Band

Before two boys of the 6th show left the stage, the camera caught both Yuuya and Yorii high-fiving Ren who was up for the next show…

Chinami Chinen

"I've met Chinami-san before! I ran into her when I was Ōta looking to explore the Haneda Ōtorii. Unfortunately, I got turned around in the city. I noticed her cause it's not often you see many people wearing a cloth over their eyes! She pointed me to the right location and said that, 'I would find fortune in my endeavors.' I'm not entirely sure what she meant, but the scenery of the torii gate helped make my video a lot better!"

Kira Chinen

"I've never met Kira-san, but I think I have seen her. I think she was driving around in her police cruiser around Ōta. ...I may be wrong, but I think I saw Kanra-chan in her back seat. I was worried she may have gotten arrested again, but it seems like she was okay and having fun with Kira-san, which was good. I don't know much about her, but Keiko says she is a good person who likes to make plans and stuff cause she used to be in the army. That's fascinating! I wonder if she knows anyone haunted army sites..."

Taria Chinen

"I met Taria-chan when I was walking around Ōta one night! I saw her jumping from rooftop to rooftop, and it was awesome seeing her move! I tried following her, but got lost cause she was so fast. Before I knew it, I ended up in a new part of the city that I hadn't been in before. Thankfully, as I was walking around, this woman wearing a mask appeared before me, which was really interesting! She asked if I was lost, and helped guide me back to a part of town. Before I could thank her, she disappeared."

"The next day I saw Taria-chan performing tricks in the middle of the street. When she was done, I approached and thanked her for her help last night. She said she didn't know what I meant, but I told her I hope she can teach me how to jump on buildings at night. She seemed really nervous when I said that, though. I wonder why..."

"I really like all the members of this team, even though I really haven't spoken to them much. I'm really interested in Chinami-san! Her powers deal directly with the supernatural! Her ability to see into the future is really interesting and neat!" Criss then suddenly looks down, a bit worried.

Kira's Thoughts on Edogawa Division

Yuriko Kuromiya

Kira takes a look at the Edogawa team leader and frowns. "Yuriko Kuromiya. How could I ever forget her? I couldn't even if I wanted to." She looks up at the screen, upset. "If you don't know much about me, then know this. I hate mercenaries with a passion. They have no sense of loyalty, and only sell themselves to whichever side or group is paying the most. Money is the only thing they crave and care about, and that pisses me off. And assassins? They're worse. I don't care for mercenaries, but at least they have the guts to fight you in broad daylight instead of sticking to the shadows like a coward."

"Why am I explaining all this, you ask? Because this woman..." Kira shows Yuriko's picture. "...is the latter of the two. I first met her when I was in the army. Even then I didn't really care for her, though I had to admit, she knew how to fight. She stayed with us for a month before she left after her contract ended. Some of us were sad to see her go, but most of us were glad she was gone, myself included."

"Years later, when I became a major... well, you know the story of my unit getting wiped out." She looks down, sighing. After a couple of seconds, she looks back up, upset. "But what you don't know is that this woman... she was there that day when we were attacked. I personally saw her wipe out most of my men. I think she was surprised to see me, and if I hadn't recognized her eyes behind her mask, I wouldn't have known it was her." Kira looks away.

"Needless to say, she beat me. I thought she would have killed me, but... she left me alive! She fuckin' left me alive! Pitying me! And I think that was worse than any kind of wound she inflicted on me! Its cause of her that I..." Kira balls her fists, barely controlling herself.

"I'll say this: I don't know if we'll ever meet each other in the D.R.B. But if we do, I promise you now, 'Black Dahlia', you will regret sparing me that day."

Kaoru Shinozaki

Kira looks at the photo of Kaoru, and sighs. "Normally, I don't like relying on someone else's help when it comes to solving a case. It makes me feel indebted to them, and I hate being in someone else's debt. Don't ask me why, it's just one of my little quirks. Anyway, though they are rare and few, there are times when even I need some help on a case. And when I can't go to Chinami (I try not to cause she always gives me a lecture), I instead have to rely on Kaoru here."

"I know her mainly cause of her younger sister, Kanra. She introduced the two of us, and though I don't care much for her hacker activities, she is useful in helping me when I'm stumped on a case. I don't have her reveal to me crucial information. I just ask her to point me in the right direction, and then I take care of the rest. In return for her help, I allow her to buy anything from the coffee shops here in Ōta under my name." Kira groans.

"I'm starting to think that that was a bad idea. How does a girl her size even manage to spend up to $400 a week on coffee?!"

Kanra Akemi

Kira gives a little chuckle at the photo of Kanra. "Ah, Kanra. I've had to, unfortunately, take her down to the police station on more than one occasion. The reason? You mean, besides the numerous amounts of property damage she accumulates on a biweekly basis? But truthfully, she's not such a bad kid. And I won't deny that the people she beats up don't have it coming. So whenever I wait for her... 'mother' to come pick her up, I usually just drive her around town and pick her up something from a fast food restaurant."

"Of course, I always have to put a limit on how much she gets, though. My first time, I underestimated just how much a little girl could eat. Between her and her sister, Kaoru, I'm amazed that they haven't eaten or drunk Yuriko out of house and home. ...Though that would be pretty funny to see."

"I've not met Yuriko-san before, but Kisouna states that her analysis and work have helped her in her career many times, which is a good thing. From what I can tell, Yuriko-san seems to be a caring individual, as she adopted two young girls and took them in like they were her own. I can tell from her posture that she is quite capable of defending herself. I only hope she tries diplomacy before resorting to force."

Kaoru Shinozaki

"Aranai has spoken well of Kaoru-chan. She seems to be an intelligent, young girl. I must admit, I've no real skill when it comes to computers or technology, but I do know that in today's world, having some knowledge of both can be a good thing. I only hope she finds time to go outside once in a while."

"Though I've not seen it for myself, stories of Kanra-chan's strength have made their way here to Ueno. She seems to be an extremely gifted, young child. I only hope she learns to control her emotions and strength so that she doesn't wind up hurting herself or others that she cares for."

“I don’t really owe you anything do I?” Hawks winked. 

“What do you want?” Dabi growled. 

“Nothing for now, but you’ll owe me. That’s all.” 

“Fine.”

Their meetings of the PLF were shifted to Re-destro’s mansion, a labyrinth of identical corridors, lavish rooms that stank of wealth built upon foundations and corporations that concealed this singular secret of their true loyalties. Said loyalties, once pledged to Destro, then to his son, were now transferred onto Tomura Shigaraki. 

The young man sat at the head of the council table. The table was in a semicircular shape, with the lieutenants taking a seat each. These meetings, a daily routine, were something Dabi didn’t enjoy. 

And with the agenda of this one, he was about to enjoy them far less. 

“I’m pairing you guys up. Each pair will lead a squadron of their own. I don’t care what you guys do to them. Just make sure that when I assign your squad something, it gets done. Got it?” After waiting for a general murmur of assent, Shigaraki passed a sheet of paper to Mr Compress, who stood up to read the pairings. 

“Re-destro and me, Trumpet and Twice, Skeptic and Spinner, Dabi and Apocrypha —“ 

Goddammit. Dabi shot the girl a look, who had been looking at the table the whole time. Even as her name was called, she hadn’t looked up, her eyes frozen to the grey marble. 

“Toga, you’re with me.” Compress looked up from the paper. Toga stuck her tongue out. “Fine.”

“Thanks, Compress.” Shigaraki said. The performer nodded and sat back down. “So, we’re done with everything, yeah? City’s repaired, the media’s finally shut their mouths and stopped annoying us, all that garbage. Good…” 

“Let’s talk destruction.” Shigaraki’s statement was met with silence. Dabi felt the tension in the room spike. He was curious to hear what the leader of the PLF had to say on his ambition.

“Re-destro, I’ve looked at your plans. I gotta say, I’m impressed. I like the idea.”

“Thank you, great leader,” Re-destro replied, smiling widely, perhaps out of a fear that still manifested even as they were technically on the same side. Dabi hid a grin of his own.

“What’s the idea?” Toga asked. “I wanna know.”

Shigaraki picked up a piece of paper on the desk. “Basically, they want to slowly get people on their side, by spreading their message. It’ll be non-violent, at first,” Shigaraki emphasised the last two words, “But once it reaches a lot of people, they’ll start their attacks.”

Licking his lips, he continued, “Attack the major cities with the members, cause chaos, cause destruction. Show them the strength of the average citizen, how even they can overpower heroes. “Wow.” Toga breathed, grinning. The feeling was mutual with Dabi. He was impressed too. 

“But,” Tomura put the paper down, “I’m not patient enough to wait. I like the idea of getting them to our side via desperation, not genuine belief in the ideals. So here’s my change.”

“Start small, going for the small towns and villages around Deika City. Take over Kyoto first. From there, the rest of Japan. Destroy society and everything within it.”

“That’s great and all,” Dabi interjected, drawing a look from Shigaraki, “But isn’t this a little rushed?” 

“Yeah, I was getting to that,” Shigraki droned with mild annoyance, waving a hand dismissively at Dabi, who retorted with kicking his legs on the table. “We’re going to lay low for a week, scrub whatever’s left of the media off our backs, don’t draw anymore attention. Use that time to get your squads in order. By next Friday, we’re starting.”

Shigaraki spun in his chair. “That’s all I have for you guys. Dismissed.” 

People got up and began to leave, Dabi with them, until he heard Tomura call, “Dabi. Here.”

The fire-user turned back to see Shigaraki pointing at the empty space in front of his chair. He stalked up to the boy. “What is it?”

“I didn’t toss you and Apocrypha together by throwing darts. I need you to get your shit together. This...whatever it is between you two, stop it.”

“No idea what you mean,” Dabi said. 

“I saw you two fight last night from the tower. It wasn’t exactly subtle. So yeah, end this little fight of yours.”

“I am trying to end it. That bitch is insane, constantly blabbering about her precious ‘meta-ability’ and her army. She’s trying to kill me because she thinks Re-destro’s orders are still in effect, so I’m going to kill her first.” 

“You kill her, I kill you.” Dabi froze for a moment under the red glare of Shigaraki’s cold irises, and the threat that came from his mouth. “No one’s going to murder anyone within the League – Liberation Front, whatever. I’m not having my lieutenants start a civil war under my nose, not when we have this much going for us.”

His ears burning, Dabi shook off the instance of trepidation that he felt from Shigaraki, and answered back hotly, “She’s not one to listen to reason. Have you tried talking to her? She’s mental.” 

“I don’t have time to deal with this bullshit. I’ll do something if things get out of hand. Otherwise, you’re solving this on your own. That’s final.”

“Hey.” Dabi took a step forward. “You have a lot of nerve, y’know? You go through some epiphany shit and now you think you’re the next boss. We ain’t chums, but I ain’t your servant either. I have my own things to look out for too.”

“Oh yeah?” Shigaraki got to his feet, meeting Dabi’s stare with equal intensity. “What ‘own things’? Come to think of it, I still don’t know who you are, just your name, quirk, and what you’ve done. To me, you’re the same as any random soldier in the Front, especially Apocrypha.”

“Don’t compare me to her!” Dabi hissed, brandishing a spark of fire. 

“I’m sure as hell going to if it riles you up so much.” Shigaraki knocked aside Dabi’s raised arm with a backhand. “I let you go your own way because I don’t believe in ordering you guys around, but now that I’m leading more than a small group, I’m changing my style. You’re settling things with Apocrypha, got it?”

The two stared at each other with cold fury for a second, before Dabi spat, “Fine.” and spun on his heel to exit the room.

Speaking of Rakusan’en, though. They recently released this new souvenir card for Rakusan’en, featuring Nagano Tsuyoshi’s Nobunaga artwork and some fancy gold foil lettering.

These souvenir cards are called Gojou’in 御城印, which are commemorative cards that you can buy at various castles in Japan. Castles usually would have a booth with a stamp of the castle’s site, and you can stamp on pamphlets or your personal journals as "proof” that you visited the place. These cards are intended to be stamped with those castle stamps, to keep as extra special memorabilia of your visit. 

Rakusan’en is just the garden, but it seems that the residential mansion that was attached to the garden is actually Obata Castle. Since Obata Castle no longer exist, they offer cards for both Rakusan’en and Obata Castle that applies to the same site. I didn’t realise this at first because there are other Obata Castles in other places, and I’d gotten slightly confused before.

I’m not sure why the office didn’t just commission Nagano-sensei to draw the proper lords of the domain, but maybe Nobunaga is just more recognisable and therefore more attractive to customers. Though Nobukatsu is ostensibly the first lord of the domain entering the Edo period, he doesn’t seem to be distinguished as an independent lord of his own right by the city. All the Oda lords are collectively remembered as “Nobunaga’s bloodline”.

（Edit: Just to avoid being misleading, I meant “first” lord of the restructured/reorganised domains, that is, in the Edo period. Naturally, before the Oda were assigned here, this area was governed by different families. The city claims that the Oda were the ones who revitalised the area, so all the fanfare is about them, and Nobunaga is a very well-known name besides. I’m not sure if there’s much talk about the clans that lived there prior to them.）

The "castle stamp” is not even some unique design either. Instead of a special design that says either Obata Castle or Rakusan’en, it’s literally just the Tenka Fubu seal. Example of a stamped card being sold in the Mercari reseller site:

Update 12: Kanra vs Irma

We're approaching hour 33 without power. It's hot, and with Florida's notorious humidity it is nearly impossible to sleep. There is zero air movement either, so even cracking the windows isn't helping. If anything, right now it's only making things worse. We've resorted to cooling our bodies down with ice in ziplock bags. It's not a solution, but it's what we have, and given our situation, I'm glad it's something.

We were able to take a look at the town today and assess damages. For the most part, it looks like there was much more wind damage than water damage. The offices at the college Stef works at are completely flooded, which is a shame. The carpet was brand new. There were a few house casualties from fallen trees, but it could have been worse. Much worse. Still, my heart goes out to them.

We also made it to my apartment, and I'm so happy to report that it survived unscathed. However, we still have no power. Tim is going to check tomorrow and let us know if that's been rectified. If so, and Stef and Zach are still without (and there's a good chance of that considering there are two gigantic trees that took out the powerlines) then they will stay with us for a while.

I keep falling asleep as I sit here and type this.

Dumingag BION key to promote COVID-19 vaccine

DUMINGAG, Zamboanga del Sur, March 3 (PIA) —The newly launched Barangay Information Officers' Network (BION) here will greatly assist the government in disseminating public information particularly on the current COVID-19 vaccination program.

Dr. Ju Kanra Panugao, municipal health officer said the newly-designated barangay information officers will play a vital role in the campaign to raise public awareness and confidence when the vaccination roll-out commences during the launching of BION held at the Dumingag Organic Academy recently.

He said this is also very timely considering that the town had now set-up Local Vaccination Operation Center (LVOC).

“This communication network will be very helpful in promoting vaccination activities in our town. This group was set up to uniformly send a message to the people,” Panugao said.

She explained the LVOC which was established by the rural health unit (RHU) and the local government, includes a communication team that will help in disseminating accurate information to agencies and other stakeholders.

Panugao related how difficult it was before in their communication planning considering the few personnel they have. "But with the launch of BION, we are hopeful that they will help the communication team in educating the people," he said.

Meanwhile, Mayor Joan Abejuela shared upon learning the need to establish information officers in the barangay through the DILG Memorandum Circular, she immediately responded and coordinated with the different concerned agencies for its implementation.

Barangay Kagawad and Sangguniang Kabataan were selected as BION members from the 44 barangays and oriented them about the roles and responsibilities as government force multipliers.

"BION members are very helpful to the government in delivering accurate and important information especially now that fake news is rampant in social media," Abejuela stressed.

The Mayor expressed her gratitude to the Philippine Information Agency and other stakeholders for the initiative and is very hopeful that the BIONs will be able to carry out their duties and responsiblities.

The BIONs will be submitting weekly accomplishment reports as monitoring tool and basis of efficiency and effective delivery of accurate information in their respective barangays. (EDT/GCC/PIA9-Zamboanga del Sur)

A knock is heard on the door. Opening the door reveals no one is there but three wrapped presents all addressed to Aranai Norikoru.  Bringing them inside you see an envelope attached to one of the gifts with "Open First" written on top. Opening the envelope you see not a letter but a disc the size of hand. You jump when the disc activates and reveals a hologram of the members of Wicked Requiem.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY! ARANAI SENPAI!" Kanra shouts. A huge smile on her face as Yuriko and Kaoru stand next to her. 

"Happy Birthday Motor Girl!" Kaoru says, throwing her hand in a peace sign.

"Indeed Happy Birthday Aranai-chan. Forgive us for not being able to deliver the gifts in person but we were able to record this for you." Yuriko finishes with a small smile on her lips.

"Open my gift first!" Kanra says, vibrating with excitement. 

Opening the gift marked with from Kanra reveals a pair of knee length leather boots with cherry blossom pink laces.

"New boots so you can ride around town! Hope you can put them to good use." Kanra cheers fist pumping the air. 

"I believe it's my turn now." Yuriko says as her smile turns much more mischievous. 

Opening the gift marked from Yuriko reveals a black combat knife with cherry blossom petals engraved on the blade.

"A Knife from my personal collection because you can never have too many ways to defend yourself. Come over and I'll properly show you how to use it but I would hide it from Shisuta and Kisouna. They probably wouldn't approve of it." Yuriko laughs. 

"I'm last and it is probably the best of the gifts." Kaoru boasts.

Opening the gift from Kaoru which was the smallest reveals a motorcycle key with the Sakurai Clan symbol as a keychain attached. 

"I got you a new Yamaha. I did some modifications to it that may not be street legal but you didn't hear that from me. I will let you know that it can go close to 225 MPH. So those stupid cops can barely catch you now. It should be parked out back." Kaoru winks a huge smile on her face. 

"Well Aranai it appears we've run out of time. I wish you a great rest of your birthday and hope to see you soon." Yuriko finishes.  

"Happy Birthday Aranai!" Kaoru and Kanra cheer one last time.

The hologram cuts off as the members of Wicked Requiem wave goodbye. The disc proceeds to play the Happy Birthday song before turning off. 

As the hologram ends, Aranai finds it hard to conceal the small smirk on her face, as she looks at the new boots on her feet given to her by her protege, Kanra.

"Not bad," she says. "Kid certainly knows my style. A little uncomfortable now, but that's easy to fix."

Heading to her garage, she walked promptly by her parents' room, rolling her eyes a bit as it was unsurprisingly empty. Heading downstairs, she entered the garage and looked at Kanra's gift, a new Yamaha, situated closely beside her old one. Truthfully, she was a bit worried about riding another bike. Her old Yamaha was her friend and partner, and one that she had personally customized for herself.

Still, it would be rude to refuse, so the former Bōsōzoku gingerly got on her new bike. Surprisingly, it fitted her almost as well as her old one did. Throwing the keys in the air, which she caught with ease, Aranai put the key in the ignition and heard the purr of the engine roar to life.

Before driving off, she felt around in her back pocket for Yuriko's gift, her brand-new knife. Looking at it, the SC leader smirked.

"Maybe I'll take her up on that offer." She said. "Yeah, I definitely will."

As the garage door opened, the wheels of her new bike squealed, as the biker drove out of her house, and down the road, eager to see what else this day had in store for her.
